Clinton's future paycheck cut

Hillary Clinton's salary will drop to pre-2007 amount.
Hillary Clinton's salary will drop to pre-2007 amount.

(CNN) - Hillary Clinton's pay check has officially been cut.

Congress voted Wednesday night to reduce the Secretary of State's salary back to its pre-2007 level of $186,000 to conform to a clause in the constitution stipulating a member of congress cannot be appointed to a government job if the position's salary has increased during the lawmaker's current term.

Clinton's second term began in January 2007.

The conservative activist group Judicial Watch circulated the clause in question, Article 1, Section 6 of the Constitution, soon after President-elect Barack Obama announced he was nominating Clinton to the top diplomatic post. Noting the clause, Judicial Watch said it was illegal for Clinton to be nominated to the post since President Bush authorized a nearly $5,000 pay raise for job last January.

"There's no getting around the Constitution's ineligibility clause, so Hillary Clinton is prohibited from serving in the Cabinet until at least 2013, when her current term expires," Judicial Watch President Tom Fitton said in a statement.

But lawmakers have gotten around the clause before in the same fashion they have now: with Congress changing the salary of the office in question back to what it originally was.

It happened when Ohio Sen. William Saxbe was named President Nixon's attorney general in 1974 and again when Texas Sen. Lloyd Bentsen became President Clinton's Treasury secretary in 1993.

While Clinton is missing out on the nearly $5,000 pay raise, she still stands to make about $10,000 more as secretary of state than she currently draws as a U.S. senator.

    This average out to 416.00 month. Do you think Clinton is worried about the dollar amount? Any rate, it would be a lot for me, put pennies to her.

    Hillary Clinton should have been the president.

    Thank God Hillary Clinton was soundly defeated for the Democratic nomination because John McCain would have crushed her in the General Election. When the dust settled, it was she who was unelectable.

    And for her troubles she was nominated by President Elect Obama to be Secretary of State. Not bad, considering the vile, negative, dishonest, racist and hypocrisy-laden sewer campaign that she ran for the nomination.

    Get over it already. The people spoke, if she should have been president the people would have voted for her> I believe in letting the majority decide like they did. At least the President-elect offered her a Great position to still remain in the spotlight. I am sure she would not have been so generious to him if she had won.

    I don't understand why they just don't get paid, because I am sure Hillary and Obama could live off of not getting paid, but just on their book sales..that will help out with some debt...

    Obama shows his fiscal prudence by hiring a Secretary of State that they have to pay less than anyone else under consideration. Kudos!

    Robert of NYC- Its an adult who is able to accept what is, instead of pouting and cryin over spilled milk. Hillary will be Secretary of State. Maybe, that is her destiny, at this time, in this place. If she is woman enough to accept that, when will you be man enough to move on with YOUR life.

    I'm sure the pay cut doesn't mean a thing to Hillary or Bill since they've made over 100 million since he was president. They're as out of touch with the common people's daily living problems as any of these super wealthy politicians.

    The only people who are living on $6.50 an hour are those who chose not to get an education. No worries for Hillary, Bill was finally making the bread.

    I do not think her pay should be cut. I know how hard it will be to try to live on appox. $170,000.00 a year. I only make $46,800.00 a year and it's hard, so if all she gets is the $170,000.00 I think it will be hard for her to live on it. I know that if that was all I was making, I would really have to tighten my belt to live on the little bit more she makes above my present pay.

    I hope they do not make her pay for her own meals or jet fuel and I hope the government does not charge her $15.00 for the first checked piece of baggage considering all the baggage she carries with her. LOL

    "Some of those people in DC should try to live on 6.50/hour like some of the people out here in the real world."
    Hillary Clinton has a law degree from Yale, she is a former First Lady, sitting United States Senator, and Secretary of State-designate. Why on earth should she try living on $6.50/hour? I think that she took steps in her life to avoid having to live on $6.50/hour.

    Leave it to some conservative action group. I think they should be looking into the amount of money that Evangelical preachers take from senior citizens who are easily manipulated to sending these crooks their social security checks. I guess it might be a little too close to home though. DUH!!!

    The difference in salary will not make a difference to Hillary. However it was important to remove all potential legal hurders ahead of her confirmation hearing.

    Agreed, Obama is not qualified, Hillary Clinton or anyone else, anyone, should have been a better president.
    ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
    One thing that Hillary and President Elect Obama have in common is neither of them has ever been the President of the United States.
    So how is Hillary more qualified?
    GWB has served 8 yrs now. Is he more qualified than Hillary to continue being the President of the United States?
    Is anybody ever really ready or qualified to be president. It's not as if she or the others before Obama was ever a president to know what the job really entails and knew what would come up as the POTUS, just ask Bush! If Hillary was so qualified or others, why weren't they able to defeat Obama, afterall, he was just an unknown senator from Illinois!
    Actually, exit polling showed that she would have defeated John McCain by almost twice the amount Obama did.
