Daschle is Obama's pick for health care point man

Obama announced the pick of Daschle Thursday.
Obama announced the pick of Daschle Thursday.

CHICAGO, Illinois (CNN) - President-elect Barack Obama picked former Senate Majority Leader Tom Daschle for two important roles Thursday - secretary of Health and Human Services and director of the White House Office of Health Reform.

"He will be responsible not just for implementing our health care plan. He will also be the lead architect of that plan," Obama said, calling Daschle "one of America's foremost health care experts."

"If we want to overcome our economic challenges, we must also finally address our health care challenge," Obama said. Appearing at a press conference with Obama, Daschle said it is "so exciting" to take on the dual role not just to implement reform "but helping to generate it."

"We have the most expensive health care system in the world, but are not the healthiest nation in the world," Daschle said.

"Our growing costs are unsustainable, and the plight of the uninsured is unconscionable," he said.
"Addressing our health care challenges will not only mean healthier and longer lives for millions, it will also make American companies more competitive, address the cause of half of all of our personal bankruptcies and foreclosures and help pull our economy out of its current tailspin."

    daschle is a LOBBYIST.
    daschles's wife is a lobbyist.

daschle ditched the mother of his children for his lobbyist wife.

    1. Great choice.

    2. Daschle is not a registered lobbyist.

    3. Sweetie and Aware...do you have jobs? In the little bit that I've read these blogs it seems you follow the Obama stories around just to make rude comments any time he does anything at all. You must have unhappy lives and I feel very sorry for you.

    Aware> That pleases you? Why?

I don't like that this guy's wife is a lobbiest. But we'll see.
I like all of Obama's other picks, though.

I can only hope that those who have posted negative comments can be the recipients of much need care in the very near future. Sometimes people have to be faced with situations that expose the true value of programs that are DESIGNED for everyone. We are in this whole mess together....lets hope that we can come out of this with health care that is beneficial to all

I see comment after comment from people that don't get it. If they were lobbyists and they've stopped then anything they do of the sort will be illegal and we will have another Gov of Illinois type case.

Even if I hated Obama (and I don't) I'd want him to succeed because he is going to be the president. Its like wishing your parents were more stupid because you didn't like them...they are still making decisions for you why would you want them to not be able to do their jobs?

Support the man while he is in/taking office and vote for somebody else in four years if he doesn't do the job.

These people that are criticising Obama now and getting all their anger out about McCain not winning should shut up and go away. Their views and politics are not needed here any more. We are in a new age of an end to racism, bigotry and the like.
