Early Blair House check-in for Obamas unavailable

The Obamas had been hoping for an early Blair House check-in.

CHICAGO (CNN) – President-elect Barack Obama will not be moving his family across the street from the White House early, despite his request to do so. Blair House, which incoming presidents traditionally occupy 5 days before inauguration day on January 15, is apparently booked in the early part of January.

An Obama transition spokesperson says the family initially "explored the idea" of moving into Blair House early so that daughters Sasha and Malia could start school on schedule. But the family was told there were previously-scheduled events and guests that could not be displaced.

"The Blair House, the President's guest house for visiting dignitaries, is available to President-elect Obama and his family starting January 15, as is historically the case," said Sally McDonough, spokeswoman for First Lady Laura Bush.

"As for any conversation, I don't comment on specific conversations about transition details."

The Obama transition spokesperson emphasized the White House has been "extremely accommodating" to the Obama family, adding that the entire process has been "smooth and friendly."

  2. READING COMPREHENSION

The short and easy to understand article clearly states the Blair House is available starting January 15th, which is when it is SUPPOSED TO be available. The Obamas are getting it on January 15th, which is when every President-elect family has historically moved in.

The article is saying the Obamas wanted to move in even earlier than what is historically done, but the house was already booked for that period of time.

    READING IS FUNDAMENTAL, people.

Kitty, bertha, Cindy...you are pathetic... your beloved president drove the country into the ground....wake up and smell the recession!!!

You might want to read more than sensationalized versions of stories....Obama was one of the first to ask IL governor to resign....and if you are so sure he is buddies with him you are welcome to show proof....

Cindy you better brace yourself because Obama will bring many good things to this country and then you and ignorant people like you will be left looking pretty dumb...along with your beloved president.

That's right, BHO can move in on the 15th. He can wait his turn... DC has PLENTY of hotels, pick one.

I am certain that the Obamas will find alternate accomodations in Washington for the early period of January to settle Malia & Sasha into the school term on time. The Obamas are responsible parents & truly value education.

Relax everyone! "Dubaya's" term is almost over! And, none too soon.

UNBELIEVABLE that "Dubaya" can't accomodate this legitimate request for the 44th President of the United States. I wonder who the so-called "important" guests to Blair House are?

What are they trying to do SET THIS FAMILY UP OR SOMETHING? What's going on. This is really scareeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee! Can someone with some knowledge on this shead some Light on this PLEASE!???????

Kitty, you are so full of it, he is the prez-elect and you don't have to like it but he will be YOUR PREZ too. You and many others are trying to pin this on prez-elect, check your history my dear, how many republicans are in prison right now for corruption and let's not talk about Water Gate. Get off your hight horse and stop trying to tarnish this man before he is officially in office. I really don't feel he was asking for special favors so all of you who are trying to make this a huge issue better take a look at the real issues that should make headline, Economy, billions of $$ still going to AIG executives with our tax dollars, the big 3 begging for money after they did a crappy job and still want to keep their FAT SALARIES and BONUSES. SO PEOPLE CONCENTRATE AND VOICE YOUR OPINIONS PRO OR CON AGAINST OUR TAX DOLLARS GOING TO FAT RICH BAST...........

So is the space available or not? The headline and lead-in paragraphs say the place is booked, therefore precluding the PRESIDENT ELECT and his family from staying there prior to HIS inauguration. It is not as if he is some visitor or something, he is the man! Then lower in the story it says that Mrs. Bush's spokeswoman says the Blair House IS available? So do they have temporary digs or what?

Good Lord people. Both sides need to stop the hate NOW! We have real problems in this country caused by both sides of the aisle. So they can't move in early, big deal. I am sure the Obamas would be welcomed if it was possible. GET OVER IT!

    Susan,

Presidents stay in hotels all the time when they travel. The Secret Service would just have to work with the security of the hotel and there are any number of hotels in the D.C. area that could work just fine.

There was nothing wrong (or "elitist") about Obama asking, and from the reporting the Obama people were fully accepting of the Bush response. Why elevate a minor inquiry into a big deal? He won–get over it!! The Bush/Cheney folks are leaving–let them go in peace!!

I too can not understand why this made the headlines. The only reason I read the article is because I thought it was regarding an important issue, such as the economy since we are offically in a recession.

Sorry.. but this is unacceptable. Rank has it's privilege and concessions should be made to accomdate the incoming first family. CNN – This should NOT have been made public either, IMO!

    An American ...

The article says nothing about President Elect Obama or his family being offended (as a matter of fact if anything it says just the opposite). It's only some of the people posting here that seem to be offended.

This is not news. He asked, he was told no. End of story.

The Blair House will be available on January 15, 2009. Five days before inauguration, the same as it has been for The President Elects who came before him.

Pam in Eugene OR -to be fair you should point out that there are plenty of stink bombs being tossed by the democraps and bush haters. But you are forgiven since you can't understand what parity is since you get your news from the biased media.

I bet the girls are happy they get a few extra days off, since they can't start on time. Although, I guess they could find another place...

MILT: I love your comment. Do people just listen to Fox News 24/7? Don't they realize what is happening to this country? And to their own lives? And the lives and hopes for their children?

I don't care about the Blair House – the Bush family seems to have been accomodating – from visits to breifings. Rent a house. I don't care about the sleezebag Governor of Illinois or the sleezebag Governor of Alaska (or its Sen) or the sleezebag Senator of Minn, either. Has anybody looked at housing sales lately? Or unemployment figures? This is not a joke. And it's not going to go away.

I wish the American press corps took this country as seriously as you do.

Rebekah: You lost, move on. Support your new President. Yep, he's yours too! And if our situation doesn't improve in 4yrs, then you can start your ranting and raving. But nobody can project what's going to happen, including you. So, stretch out from curling yourself in a ball in the corner, try to find some joy in your life and join the celebration!
