Early Blair House check-in for Obamas unavailable

The Obamas had been hoping for an early Blair House check-in.

CHICAGO (CNN) – President-elect Barack Obama will not be moving his family across the street from the White House early, despite his request to do so. Blair House, which incoming presidents traditionally occupy 5 days before inauguration day on January 15, is apparently booked in the early part of January.

An Obama transition spokesperson says the family initially "explored the idea" of moving into Blair House early so that daughters Sasha and Malia could start school on schedule. But the family was told there were previously-scheduled events and guests that could not be displaced.

"The Blair House, the President's guest house for visiting dignitaries, is available to President-elect Obama and his family starting January 15, as is historically the case," said Sally McDonough, spokeswoman for First Lady Laura Bush.

"As for any conversation, I don't comment on specific conversations about transition details."

The Obama transition spokesperson emphasized the White House has been "extremely accommodating" to the Obama family, adding that the entire process has been "smooth and friendly."

I am curious. After Bush is out and Obama is in, what will the insanely partisan types complain about? There is all this name calling and hysteria because Obama doesn't get to move in earlier than is the norm? Wow. I can only imagine your outrage to a real issue. Now, not to leave you right wing partisans out – please.... He didn't complain, he asked a question – Can my family move into the Blair house early? The White House said no, and he is moving on.

I voted for McCain. Obama won. I hope he is a great President and that I end up voting for him in four years. Because if I do, it will be because OUR country is better off for having him there. So, lets stop the hysteria, the whining, the making mountains out of molehills and do something constructive – like buy something made in America.

I am an Obama supporter but I don't think he should have made that request nor people should have bent over backward to acommodate it. His family can certainly afford to live elsewhere anywhere for a while, and that's more than I can say for most Americans.

Obama ALREADY has a residence in DC. No reason why he can't tough it out there in a "Senator's lodging" conditions for a few weeks more. His 1/2 brother still lives in a shack in Africa without complaining so I'm sure Obama can hang on a few more weeks in his D.C. apartment just fine...

Come on CNN: "White House turns down Obama request"

Then you read the article and basically the place is booked. No one complained, no one cried foul play... you all are digging for negativity that just isn't there...

When are you going to realize you actually have one decent President -Elect who is not a complainer...I can guarantee he had a other alternatives....
Be positive ...I thought Xmas was around the corner.

If Obama can raise millions for his campaign, he surely can put his family up in a hotel. Talk about misusing authority even before someone gets into the office !

after all that corporate cash they raised, there's gotta be a CEO that will take them in for a couple days. They're in washington so i guess it would be a health insurance lobbyist.

Who exactly are these guests of the Bushes (read, "taxpayers") that can't just be moved across the street to stay in the White House? Even Churchill and other world leaders have stayed there.

Didn't anyone tell Bush there would be an incoming President in January 2009 and he might to tell his guests that their might be a conflict i fthey wanted to stay at Blair House?

I suppose the Obamas could just move into the studio apartment Barack has been renting.

What don't some of you understand? Obama has the house on the 15th as always for the PE. He wanted it earlier, inwhich it is being used by the actual President. Please READ the article before commenting. Thank you Gerda Edwards for your comment.

You ever notice how nasty the majority of the liberal comments are.
    Interesting

You're right. It's almost like conservatives teaching their children that "You'd have to wear gloves to touch President-Elect Obama".

Hopefully President Elect Obama can repair the image of the United States abroad and win back its once honorable standing in the world.

If the rest of the world continues to hate American conservatives, well that wouldn't be a terrible thing.

Here it comes, the whole time bush was president I had to deal with republicans telling me to respect him because he was the president. Now I'll have to deal with republicans being pissed and racist, and the democrats who are just as bad telling me to show respect. This whole decade will be remembered as the biggest joke of the century.

    Vote libertarian. Legalize weed.

The problem with having the Obamas stay anywhere else is security. During a War on Terrorism, aren't we supposed to pay attention to that kind of stuff?

As taxpayers, we already pay for security at places like Blair House. For the Obamas to live somewhere else, we'll have to pay for a whole new security set up, communication arrangements, offices, motorcades, blocked traffic etc. somewhere else, for just a couple of weeks.Maybe

Bush thought the guy with the 13 houses was going to win and he wouldn't need Blair House

This is just another example of Obama thinking he's the one,he knows the rules why even ask he's in a better position to to adjust than us commoners. But he know that his mouth pieces at CNN is going to spin it differently for him.

Can someone please ask the question:

What in the world are US Lawmakers thinking, taking a Christmas vacation in this time of crisis. Isn't that a little like flying to a bankruptcy hearing in private jets!

Don't they feel responsible for this mess enough to interrupt their personal agenda and "attend the event" in terms of working nonstop on the US economy until some results are evident.

    Shocked and dismayed,

    Donald

All you red state people seem to be the ones upset. The angry liberal thing just isn't going anywhere anymore. We have taken control of the government over your ignorance. As the minorities become more of a factor the GOP will become more and more of an afterthought. Did anybody notice the lynch mobs at the Palin/McCain rallies? I didn't see anything but angry white people and the rest of the world saw the same thing.
