Early Blair House check-in for Obamas unavailable

The Obamas had been hoping for an early Blair House check-in.
The Obamas had been hoping for an early Blair House check-in.

CHICAGO (CNN) – President-elect Barack Obama will not be moving his family across the street from the White House early, despite his request to do so. Blair House, which incoming presidents traditionally occupy 5 days before inauguration day on January 15, is apparently booked in the early part of January.

An Obama transition spokesperson says the family initially "explored the idea" of moving into Blair House early so that daughters Sasha and Malia could start school on schedule. But the family was told there were previously-scheduled events and guests that could not be displaced.

"The Blair House, the President's guest house for visiting dignitaries, is available to President-elect Obama and his family starting January 15, as is historically the case," said Sally McDonough, spokeswoman for First Lady Laura Bush.

"As for any conversation, I don't comment on specific conversations about transition details."

The Obama transition spokesperson emphasized the White House has been "extremely accommodating" to the Obama family, adding that the entire process has been "smooth and friendly."

10 Days early? When I read the story first, I thought the denial was just. But, seriously, what dignitaries is Pres Bush entertaining in these last few days? The only ones considering giving him money right now? Nonetheless, I certainly hope that the children can start on time, but I don't believe that it was the outgoing admin's job to help so much. I just wish they had.

    Anonymous,

In 2001, Clinton was ordered to pay a $25000 fine AND had his Law license suspended for five years. This agreement came on the condition that Whitewater prosecutors would not move forward with federal purjury charges against him.

He wasn't charged and convicted because he "made a deal".

It certainly is a confusing thing, but anonymous is wrong. Bill Clinton was in fact impeached... he just was not removed from office. That is also the case with the first president that was impeached, Andrew Johnson. Impeached means they were tried under the impreachment provisions, it does not mean they were removed from office. Richard Nixon resigned so he would not have to face impeachment, where it was highly likely he would have been removed from office. Just to set the record straight. By the way, I'm a Clinton supporter that never thought he should have had to go through impeachment proceedings.

To me, it's the bush clan holding onto everything they can before they move out. The lease is up, time to go people, we have spoken as a people and it is Obama time...Bettya, if it would have been mccain, things would be different...Oh, but he would have probably been fine in his luxury suite paid for by his lovely wife...It's all good Obama will make it happen, heck he was just being a daddy lookin out for his babies...

"It is elitist to want your kids to start school on shedule? I wouldn't want to move 3 times in one month – hotel, Blair House then the White House. "

No one is forcing the Obamas to move 3 times in a month. They can live in the hotel until they can move into the White House. Nothing says they have to be in the BH from the 15th-20th.

And yes, it is elitist to continue to ask, take, and expect special accomodations, especially as a yet-to-take-office elected official. Obama seal, Office of the President Elect, Roman columns, patting the sitting President on the back like a peer, early use of the BH, etc

Lets all get a few things clear here. The Blair House is used by the President as a Guest House for Foreign Heads of State and can only be used by those Invited. What is Bush doing less than 3 weeks from the Inaguration entertaining Foreign Heads of State? They obviously cannot be there for the Inaguration since the house has to be vacated by the 15th for the PE. It is too close to the end of his term for him to be discussing foreign policy and most Heads of State have made it clear they are waiting for the PE before they move forward on anything major. So who will be residing there, that makes it unavailable for PE Obama?

they should just move in with the Mr. & Mrs. Bush. think about it
Laura could read to the kids George and Barak can do a little bowling,
and shoot some hoops. Barak can use some practice with the bowling. Michele can start planning the next 8 years yes 8 years.
and at christmas all the family members can get together. this would be amazing. and maybe just maybe the 2 presidents can get together
and fix something....Merry christmas, Happy holliday or what ever you like...

Can you imagine, OB is not even in office yet and he is already in the mist of a controversey that could bring him down. I have to wonder if he got the union vote in exchange for a union bail out. That being said why do they even call it an auto bail out when in fact its a UAW bail out. They would of or should of taken Crookers deal or do they have an ace "BO" in the hole or should we call that it White House. Wake up you ediots your the one paying the bills.

Anonymous, you'd better get educated yourself. Ralph is right, Clinton was impeached. Impeachment refers to the process of the House voting whether to hold the trial in the Senate The House did indeed vote to impeach Clinton, making him the second President to be impeached. The Senate trial did not result in sufficient votes to remove him from office.

By the way, when he left office Truman was the least popular President; and today he is viewed as one of the best. So give your statistics a rest for a few decades to see how history judges things.

And a Democrat leaked Valerie Plame's name. Try not to post if you can't be accurate.

And the prize for the MOST UNINTELLIGENT, STUPID, DOESN'T KNOW ANYTHING AND FLAT WRONG POST of the day (and maybe of all time) goes to Anonymous-thank God you didn't use your real name.
"Ralph – Bill Clinton was NEVER Impeached and he was never judged in a court or convicted of anything. Educate yourself before you make false claims." Haha..are you kidding me!?!? That is hilarious. Everybody lets have a round of applause! It doesn't matter what you political beliefs are Bill Clinton was impeached...this is an empirical fact as sure as the sun will rise in the east tomorrow. I can't believe this your telling someone to educate themselves....you just failed 2nd grade with that statement. Clinton was also tried by the Arkansas Supreme Court and was ordered to surrender his law license for perjury. He was impeached, impeachment is the senate trial that trial then found him not guilty on one count and tied on the other thus he was not removed from office. What they say is true...While you don't always get the government you want you always get the government you deserve...we deserved the Bush years....
