Early Blair House check-in for Obamas unavailable

The Obamas had been hoping for an early Blair House check-in.
The Obamas had been hoping for an early Blair House check-in.

CHICAGO (CNN) – President-elect Barack Obama will not be moving his family across the street from the White House early, despite his request to do so. Blair House, which incoming presidents traditionally occupy 5 days before inauguration day on January 15, is apparently booked in the early part of January.

An Obama transition spokesperson says the family initially "explored the idea" of moving into Blair House early so that daughters Sasha and Malia could start school on schedule. But the family was told there were previously-scheduled events and guests that could not be displaced.

"The Blair House, the President's guest house for visiting dignitaries, is available to President-elect Obama and his family starting January 15, as is historically the case," said Sally McDonough, spokeswoman for First Lady Laura Bush.

"As for any conversation, I don't comment on specific conversations about transition details."

The Obama transition spokesperson emphasized the White House has been "extremely accommodating" to the Obama family, adding that the entire process has been "smooth and friendly."

Just to clarify for those who clearly didn't read the article. Obama's family WILL get the house on January 15. They requested it earlier than the 15th and it was booked. Why is this even news? Obama still has the place where he's been staying for the past 4 years. An extra move is hardly going to be more convenient for the kids anyway.

Isn't Obama a Senator? Doesn't he live in Washington now? I know he's been holed up in Chicago for the transition but the idea that the kids can't start school on time is just stupid. Put them up in a hotel for a few days with Michele and her mom the way anyone else would in that position.

Bitter, bitter, people. Guess you'll be getting coal in your stockings this year! They asked, they were told "no", life goes on. As my mother always says, "It doesn't hurt to ask." The Obamas didn't know whether or not the Blair House was booked. They were simply asking that, if it were not, could they move in early so their daughters could start school on schedule. That would be the same as YOU asking to move into your house before the final inspection. I'm sure NONE of you bitter people have ever asked for a favor before in your lives. Grow up, people.

    Cindy,
You really haven't been paying attention. Obama has had very little to do with business-as-usual politics in Illinois. From MF words leaving Blaggy's mout to describe Obama, anyone not non compos mentis, can see there is no love lost between them. You sore losers have no dignity.

Did any of you really READ THE NEWS ARTICLE??? It says the Blair House is traditionally ready on January 15 – which is when it will be ready for The Messiah. Mr and Mrs Messiah wanted Blair House BEFORE January 15. The White House had every right to turn down the Highness' request.

Non story, get over it! If it were available, it would have been offered. Especially if the reason being was for B.O.'s children.

To all you people bashing Bush and thinking that Obama is being slighted - re-read the article! ... "The Blair House, the President's guest house for visiting dignitaries, is available to President-elect Obama and his family starting January 15"

Obama IS going to move in on the 15th (as is tradition), but Obama is the one asking to move in even earlier, when it's already been reserved for use by Bush for HIS guests. Sheesh, all you're doing is reinforcing the stereotype about liberals not digging into the details, but only reading the headlines.

    @ cindy

Yo retard....I'm sure if Obama was involved in anyway with spider bang wearing Blago, he would not have called Obama all those horrible names.

To all of you who obviously can't read, the article said they can move in 5 days before like ALL OTHER pres.-elects have done. What is the problem? And please, let's not go there with Bush being unhelpful to Obama. Do you want to go back to the way the Clintons did things when they left? Remember the damaged computers, stolen items, and spray paint on the walls of our White House. Talk about attitude and lack of character

Okay, he may not the POTUS yet, then please enlighten me why everyone is acting as if he is the one who should have all the answers and fix everything before Jan. 20th??? You can't have it both ways with the double talk. And even as the President-elect he still should have not had his request denied!

Funny how the talk in the comments are about Barack when the story is about the kids... it's just sad...

  14. Get over it

Hey Mack December 12th, 2008 11:03 am ET

If incoming presidents traditionally occupy Blair House 5 days before inauguration day on January 15, why then would it be booked for other guests and not be available for the President-Elect and his family? And why couldn't the "previously-scheduled events and guests be displaced"? This is very poor planning on Bush's office's part, or was it intentional?

    -----–

You need to reread the article again!!!!!!!!!!

It IS available on January 15th and beyond, just not B4.

Obama thinks he is above tradition and must be allowed to use the Blair house NOW. Unbeliveable.

"...so that daughters Sasha and Malia could start school on schedule" – what piece of crap! The Obamas are so brazen that they believe they deserve national-scale acomodations for the littlest situation they may encounter. I am sure will hear more about these two buffoons.

You Bush-bashers need remedial reading courses. The Fraud from Chicago wanted to get in BEFORE the customary 1/15 arrival. It's booked, he can call Bill Shatner....or tap the $700,000,000 campaign fund. Maybe someone will "leave the light on" for them.

    CNN,

The headline "WHITE HOUSE TURNS DOWN OBAMA REQUEST" is very misleading. It is not true that the incoming first family requested to move into the Blair House. That is is just utter nonsense, and please stop pushing such lies.

"Unbelievable, Rude & Outrageous. I agree w/Ernie. Who do they think they are to tell this courageous first family that?"

I can't believe these stupid comments as well as the people who are totally misunderstanding the situation. The Blair house is traditionally available to the incoming President as of 1/15. It is still available to Obama and his family as of 1/15. Obama requested access to the house prior to 1/15 which cannot be accomodated since it is already booked.

    That's all.

It's available for Obama on the traditional date of 15 January, it is NOT booked then. It's booked BEFORE then, which is why the early move request was turned down. Good heavens, people, all Obama did was ask a simple question. Why is that such a big deal?

That is ridiculous...Most parents would like for their children to start school on time and I would hope whomever in charge could appreciate that. I cannot imagine that the Bushes would have ANY guests or friends in town...

Wow you sheep read the whole article!!!! Obama asked for special treatment, he is not allowed to move in until January 15! And he got turned down because the PRESIDENT already had guests there.
Obama needs to stop acting like the world owes him something and is inconveniencing him when they aren't falling all over him or bowing at his feet.
Linda32, he is allowed to move in on January 15, just not before than. You people need to read and inform yourselves instead of being blind sheep. This is a heck of a lot more disturbing than poor Obama not getting sucked up to enough.
