Attorney general nominee to give up $2 million-plus salary

WASHINGTON (CNN) - Attorney general nominee Eric Holder is leaving a lucrative job as a high-powered Washington lawyer to take a modest government salary as the nation's top law enforcement official - but he won't have to pinch pennies.

According to documents released Monday by a Senate panel, Holder has accumulated assets worth more than $5.7 million dollars. The documents made public by the Senate Judiciary Committee show that if Holder is confirmed, he will give up an annual salary of more than $2 million dollars to accept the government post which pays a comparatively paltry $186,600.

The information Holder provided for his confirmation hearings shows he received $2,154,364 as a partner in the prestigious Washington firm Covington and Burling this year. Next year he will receive even more, even though he will no longer be working there.

"Upon my separation from the firm, and prior to assuming the duties of attorney general, I will receive repayment of my partner capital account ($632,767), deferred compensation from the firm's prior fiscal year ($680,820), a pro-rata share of partner compensation for work I performed in the current fiscal year ($484,073) and a separation payment to be paid prior to or immediately following my separation ($1,344,050)," Holder wrote.

Committee Chairman Sen. Patrick Leahy, D-Vermont, announced Monday the confirmation hearing tentatively scheduled for January 7 has been delayed until January 15 to accommodate Republican requests.

Leahy complained that Republicans are delaying a process that may prevent Holder from being in place at the Justice Department when President-elect Barack Obama is sworn in on January 20.

Democrats control the Senate and are expected to approve the nomination, but some Republicans have raised concerns. In particular, conservative lawmakers say they intend to examine Holder's controversial role in approving over the objections of federal prosecutors a pardon of fugitive Marc Rich in Bill Clinton's final hours as president.

As A Benigna Marko, often it is heard this man is a Patriot. In times when money seems to be the top thing in people's life, it is nice to see that our nominee for Attorney General is willing to take such a cut.
    Great job. Benigna Marko

All it takes is to get a good education and soar in your field and maybe you too can be a Obama or Holder. Jealously and ignorance won't get you there but a good education will do more to help you than hurt you.

This just show that he certainly is not in it for the money. He truly cares about his role and is more than ready to meet expectations. No one would be willing to take a pay cut like that if they did not feel a real sense of responsibility and duty.

    @ Larry

He's an attorney, not a lobbyist. One of the core tenets of being a attorney is that the beliefs and positions of the client cannot be ascribed to the attorney or else our system of justice collapses: everyone is entitled to competent representation or the judicial branch is meaningless. That he provided representation to people as a private resident in DC as opposed to any other city in the country really has nothing to do with anything and does not make him a "DC insider." Perhaps if further evidence supports your claim, it will gather legitimacy, but basing it solely on him choosing DC as his place of residence and employment is unsupportable.

I suspect it will not bankrupt him to take a cut in salary. And it is an admirable sacrifice. Would be nice if some of those rascally bankers could be forced to take a salary cut or at least the bonus cuts.... but NOOOO.... Bush snuck in the fine print to see to it that his BIG Fiancial Buddies got all they DESERVE! I wonder if they can face their Maker with a clean conscience and a pure heart.... Oh, Please.... wait.... I can't stop laughing... I mean, LIKE THEY CARE! :)

I am quite sure that is the reason he made a SECRET visit to Iraq. The man is still wheeling and dealing! You betcha... he is making underhanded deals for the future.... the Man is pure EVIL! Face it... repubs.... your man is little more than the anti Christ... if you are a Christian.

"a paltry 186,600"? Awww..... only about 5 times the national average I believe. It's sad how so many government "servants" have to give up so much....

Hey – I'd take this job, or any in the administration, because it would be a HUGE raise for me.

And while I voted for Obama I have to echo some of the sentiments here,,, this is change? Really, there are no other lawyers in this country (we have millions of them!!) that have NOT worked in washington, or been involved in a very sleazy pardon? c'mon Obama, you can do better!!

According to Larry, we are fortunate to have those same conservative lawmakers who turned their back on the constitution the last 8 years now looking out for us. Now that is change!

Republicans keep filing claims that Mr. Obama was not born natural citizen because of their reasons of insanity. I wonder how Bob Jindal of LA is being claimed to run in 2012 by the republicans. His parents came from India and he is first generation American.

    Isn't this double standard people?

Excellent choice for Obama to nominate the Eric Holder as his attorney General. Our division as an American is not in the money making but in the justice department. If we treated ourselves equally when it come to justice which govern us I think we will have a perfect union as Obama said.

Didn't Hillary have to take a paycut when she took over a Secretary of State? IMHO Obama should lead by example and have himself and his cabinet take a paycut or work for free.
