(CNN) - A Democratic source confirms to CNN that President-elect Barack Obama's choice for secretary of education is Arne Duncan, the head of Chicago public schools.

Duncan, who like Obama is a graduate of Harvard University, has served as chief executive of Chicago's public schools since 2001. Chicago is the third largest school district in the country.

Obama and Duncan often play basketball together, and Duncan was one of those who played with the president-elect in a game on Election Day.

why not pick the head of a town school system that is actually working...........

Dot Livengood   December 15th, 2008 11:11 pm ET

Birds of a feather fly together-hind legs of dogs are crooked too. Hold on everyone-Chicago is a crooked political capital of the US-I'm surprised they can all walk upright without missing a step-
All I can say-all of their dirty laundry will appear later on-and everyone who thinks this man will do a great job-he is the one who appointed them. VERY few politicians and wealthy business men are straight as moom beams-money is the root of all evil-Bush's cabinet left him when he was elected the second time-stay tuned.

Steve NY, what's wrong with bill ayers? your mother likes him.

Greg Hodges   December 15th, 2008 10:53 pm ET

I do not know about this individual`s qualifications; and I am very supportive of Barack Obama and his new team. The one thing that is beginning to concern me is the President-elect seems to be rewarding alot of his Chicago friends with high profile jobs. While it is natural to want to be surrounded by people you are comfortable with, it does leave him open for criticism that there is too much of a Chicago influence. The test will come with time; as it always does; and for now I trust this man`s judgement.

Brian   December 15th, 2008 10:14 pm ET

Oh great. Because Chicago public schools are a shining example of public eductation. (Excuse me a moment - barf) What can we expect next out of the corrupt Chicago political machine?

ALL THESE APPOINTMENTS ARE SO CRITICAL. BUT

IF I HAD TO PICK THE MOST CRITICAL , IT WOULD HAVE

TO BE DUNCAN, THE SECRETARY OF EDUCATION.

WE ARE SO FAR BEHIND, IT'S NOT EVEN FUNNY.

True enough...plaid pants are awful...I'm just not sure pants that aren't pulled up all the way is the change we need haha

@ Bettsie

Anything is better than the feces the spiteful, bitter GOP monkeys have been throwing.

nate   December 15th, 2008 9:22 pm ET

Are you posting just to hear yourself talk? Do you think it makes you famous? How about getting a job instead?

Matt   December 15th, 2008 9:03 pm ET

Can't wait to hear the whining on this one. Yep guys, Obama gave Duncan the position because he let him win at HORSE. There's your quid pro quo. Have a field day with it.

Cultural Advantages Revealled   December 15th, 2008 8:15 pm ET

Can it be that basketball is the new golf? .... Finally no more plaid pants!!

jaye   December 15th, 2008 8:12 pm ET

This is an excellent choice!
So far, Barack Obama has made wise choices... he's a very smart man and it shows.

JT from Missouri   December 15th, 2008 8:09 pm ET

I really like the choices Obama is making for his Cabinet. This one has to be one of the best ones so far. I just turned 18 today, and I am a Senior in High School. I may be one of the rare ones, but I value the importance of a affordable and well organized education system. This guy, after doing some research about him on the internet, is one of the best choices for education. I really do have confidence in Obama and in Arne Duncan. Together, he, Obama, and the rest of Obama's team, will put America back together. Not only those people, but you can bring America back together. Remember this famous quote: "Do not wonder what this country can do for you, but what for you can do for your country." A good education system can lead anyone to make a difference for this world for the better. God bless the USA and the world.

Bettsie   December 15th, 2008 8:03 pm ET

Barack might get more then a shoe thrown at him. a president job is not easy and you can't please everyone.

riss   December 15th, 2008 8:01 pm ET

oh give obama the ball already! let's get in the game!

Follow Up   December 15th, 2008 7:59 pm ET

No surprise – a politician chooses his buddy!

Now there's change you can COUNT on!

Steve NY   December 15th, 2008 7:57 pm ET

Another Bill Ayers crony no doubt. Troublesome.

Hoping for "huge" changes   December 15th, 2008 7:57 pm ET

"Oh, there are lots of challenges and, obviously, huge opportunities," Duncan said. "I think there's a huge amount of work that has to go on on the early childhood side. There's a huge amount you've got to do in the K to 12 sector. And higher ed, particularly the student loans, presents some huge, huge challenges."

It's time for some "huge" changes in our education. Hope he's up to the task.

darko   December 15th, 2008 7:56 pm ET

Because Chicago's public schools are the model that the we should strive for???

,,,Let's hope that someone in this position will be able to help students expand their vocabulary to include more descriptive words other than "huge".

I'm quite surprised at this pick for Education Secretary. Regardless of Duncan being a Harvard Graduate, Chicago Public School system is still one of the WORST in the country. This doesn't say much about Obama's pick for Education Secretary....

BB   December 15th, 2008 7:50 pm ET

And the republicans bashing our next president begins now. We finally have an intelligent person and the idiots want to tear him down. Shame Shame.

LOL   December 15th, 2008 7:50 pm ET

I wanna see the whole Obama cabinet play basketball. That would be sooo funny!!!

Matt, Chico, CA   December 15th, 2008 7:50 pm ET

There seems to be a trend of Chicago officials heading to Washington and I do not like it one bit.

Typical Republican Response   December 15th, 2008 7:49 pm ET

He was alive when Clinton was in office.....

GREAT!!! Another Clinton alumni!

Red, Red WHINE!!   December 15th, 2008 7:45 pm ET

Oh Great!

Now the republicans are going to file a lawsuit that alleges Duncan learned something from a different school (or maybe a stranger in a store even...or perhaps a book from a library...it could be ANYTHING for all we know) during one of his summers off and as such isn't truly a Harvard Grad!

This is going to be a really rough battle to win in court...because who knows, he may really have learned alot! He might be a good choice and that is NEVER good news if you are a republican!
