Obama announced his energy team Monday.

CHICAGO, Illinois (CNN) - President-elect Barack Obama has selected physicist Steven Chu for the position of energy secretary.

Obama made the announcement at a news conference in Chicago Monday, calling Chu "uniquely suited to be our next secretary of energy" for his work on new and cleaner forms of energy.

Chu, who runs the Lawrence Berkley National Laboratory in California, won the 1997 Nobel Prize in physics and is highly respected in energy circles.

I'm sure former VP and Noble Prize Winner Al Gore helped with this decision. Way to go.

To The Fatsingaporean,
Where have you been all the time? Don't you think China has some nukes or at they they have some technical know-how. So, don't try to bother.

The Fatsingaporean says: December 15th, 2008 7:21 pm ET

Has Obama ever thought about picking Dr Lee Wen Ho as his energy secretary instead of Steven Chu?

Ain't the FBI worry that an energy secretary of Chinese ancestry might sell nuclear secrets to China?

Matt   December 15th, 2008 8:53 pm ET

@ The Fatsingaporean

Wow that's racist. Spiked the race-ometer into the red zone. Kudos.

Larry   December 15th, 2008 8:37 pm ET

Obama has done a great job of surrounding himself with scientist, they should be able to get involved in a lot of different areas, including the black hole theory, which all of them probably have an opinion,I'm sure we would like know the answers to that !!

GalileoRad   December 15th, 2008 8:21 pm ET

I hope Dr. Chu's DOE will align missions with NASA and DOD and go for a space-based solar power (SBSP) program for the benefit of humankind. The agencies have reviewed SBSP independently and have basically favored it. Converging vectors in technologies, costs, environment, and security have brought it closer to a business case. SBSP can align President Obama's polices in six key areas: energy, space, security, commerce, environment, and education.

This man is a genius and I'm so happy he's on the Obama team.

Here come first glimpses of our recovery. It just may be that scientists, inventors and writers/philosophers will be again higher in our society than sportsmen, models, preachers and walking money bags.

All the Obama haters on this blog just don't like Obama so just say it.Civil minded people don't have to agree with his choices but they aren't ignorant about expressing it.God help you if all you have to beleive in is hate and not faith.Just remember every night when you close your eyes that everything you see in your sleep is the image of the devil. You don;t dream you only have nightmares because of all the hate you have in you,Just think if you express these thing about Obama how are you raising your children?..probably.with the same kind of hate and if so God help you.My guess is that most of the hate mongers are republicans or racist .But eat your hearts out because he will be your president on Jan.20th and there is not a d**n thing you can do about it.One thing for sure I'll bet when he visit Iraq he will not have shoes thrown at him because the people and JOURNALIST will welcome him as well as many of our foriegn countries and those who think that journalist was wrong I couldn't agree with you more but just take a moment and think about how many Iraqi men, women and children that have lost their lives in this war not to mention over 4,000 americans and almost as many wounded of course he is outraged

Mallory Kid   December 15th, 2008 7:29 pm ET

Obama's pick for secretary of energy was just last year the co-chairman of an international panel of top energy experts, which recognized the potential for nuclear power to help solve the world's energy problems. This among many other reasons is why he is a top pick for this position. Steven Chu is a Nobel Prize-winning physicist and director of the Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory in California. I believe he is likely to bring a clear-eyed commitment to reducing America's dependence on foreign oil. Chu is all about and gun-ho about alternative energy. What is even better is that he has a scientfiic background and access to realistically put his and his parties ideas into practice.

Lori   December 15th, 2008 7:22 pm ET

Yet another excellent Obama pick. Let the Republicans gripe about Blogojevich and trying to pin Obama to that nonsense. The rest of the country wil spend our time helping Obama and his new capable administration fix the mess this country's been in for the past 8 years.

Bush, the WORST PRESIDENT EVER, will soon be gone and the age of reason can begin. It will take years to undo the damage caused by the corrupt Bush regime of lying traitors.

Mari   December 15th, 2008 7:17 pm ET

WOW........... MORE BRILLIANT CHOICES! HOW REFRESHING TO HAVE INTELLIGENCE LEADING OUR NATION!

MikeH   December 15th, 2008 7:16 pm ET

But how does picking Steven Chu affect Sara Palin's run for the presidency? Obama's palling around with Blagoveyich (or however you spell that name)? What about Joe the Plumber?

Oh No CNN, we Americans may just get too intelligent for your tabloid articles! You may have to resort to writing responsible well-thought-out articles. Are you up to it?

Congratulations Mr. Chu. Please save us from ourselves now.

Seriously, we need some bigtime help and bigtime honest, scientific answers to problems that could sink this planet for good unless we act.

You sir, are the reason I put my life on hold for the last year and a half and worked tirelessly to elect Barack Obama.

There is nothing more urgent that we could be worrying about other than the future of this fragile planet we've been entrusted with.

I'm so, so very glad that the age of unreason is ending and being replaced by the light of science and knowledge.

Take some of that 200 billion dollar budget you'll be looking after that is going toward R and D for nuclear weapons and put it into saving this planet.

I and a lot of others will continue to work with that goal in mind.

@ Marshall

At least you got the joke. Now, step aside, this guy should have us all running flux capacitors in no time.

Suzi   December 15th, 2008 6:34 pm ET

A great selection - another high caliber appointment. Obama's energy team is very impressive.

ElGreco   December 15th, 2008 6:25 pm ET

Geezzzz...with a REAL scientist in government we'll have to get rid of Intelligent Design. WHAT A BREATH OF FRESH AIR after 8 years of Bovine Scat.

An Obama Supporter   December 15th, 2008 6:19 pm ET

It is such a tetsament to PE Obama that so many high calibre people are willing to leave their successful careers to want to be part of his team.

This is especially amazing when you read the blog comments and realize that they do so knowing the illinformed, slanderous abuse they will have to withstand!!

Jody Monroe   December 15th, 2008 6:11 pm ET

A Mastercard or Visa can buy you a Governorship or a Senate seat... but an Energy Secretary like Chu is priceless - there are some things you can't buy with money. Like the commercial says....

Red, Red WHINE!!   December 15th, 2008 6:05 pm ET

Oh Great!

Now the republicans are going to file a lawsuit claiming that Chu actually used gasoline in his vehicles while growing up, and as such isn't a true energy scientist! His principals can not possibly be genuine! Can't wait to see that one in court!

As for me...It's good to see smart people being put in a president's administration for a change. It's what I"ve missed most these past eight years...people with intelligence and patriotism leading us!

ET   December 15th, 2008 5:59 pm ET

Mr. Blitzer:

The appointment of an Energy Secretary is a significant step in the future of our country in the next few years (or decades even). Why, when we return to the Situation Room following the announcement, are we suddenly addressing a scandal that, quite frankly, will be "old news" in a couple of months.

You might want to turn our attention to the new energy movement, and the way it will literally change every human on the planet. Not the latest big-hair two-bit scandal.

carol   December 15th, 2008 5:57 pm ET

Yes, some more great choices from PE Obama....he sure is going to get this country working again and going in the right direction this time.
This man has surrounded himself with some really highly qualified people in all areas, can't wait for him to become President so he can
get all his plans started.
What a breath of fresh air PE Obama is, smart and involved and what a job he is going to do for this country.

sketchie   December 15th, 2008 5:56 pm ET

Obama is true to his words. So far I am pleased with the caliber of people in his cabinet.

Peter (CA)   December 15th, 2008 5:51 pm ET

Yes, yes, yes!

I was beginning to fear science had been replaced in this country. With all the talk of the earth being 6000 years old and man walking with dinosaurs, I was afraid I would be required to sacrifice goats or something for the harvest.

As Dennis Miller said-back when he was funny–"Someone should tell these people that the Flintstones was not a documentary".

Eric   December 15th, 2008 5:47 pm ET

How DARE he!

We can't have scientists in the government! We need bureaucrats in these positions, so they can order scientists to fudge their findings so they are in line with the administration ideology... this is unheard of!

FreeNLovIt   December 15th, 2008 5:47 pm ET

So many things to do, so little time, let the games begin!!!

Matt   December 15th, 2008 5:47 pm ET

And here I was hoping that we'd learn how to run our cars on shame and guilt. Guess we'll have to be satisfied with alternative fuel.

Marshall   December 15th, 2008 5:47 pm ET

Matt you answered your own count down. Thanks for representing your fellow Dems in an intelligent way!

Matt December 15th, 2008 5:30 pm ET

Karen - Missouri   December 15th, 2008 5:43 pm ET

Lesley   December 15th, 2008 5:42 pm ET

This is an excellent choice. Someone new who focuses on new forms of energy and can hopefully contribute something substantial to our country's energy crisis.

FreeNLovIt   December 15th, 2008 5:42 pm ET

Yeah, for moving in the right direction. To dream about it, is the first step toward making it happen.

FreeNLovIt   December 15th, 2008 5:41 pm ET

It's a start. Had we done the right thing, we would have been #1 in this area already. But that's okay, we will survive. We're the only country that woke up one morning and had a teenager called Steve Jobs build a PC in his garage with his friends. Apple was born and it revolutionized America.

Shayaa L. Hamilton   December 15th, 2008 5:38 pm ET

I think Obama's choice was finally the offensive move that Americans needed to see implimented. My only question is whether the goverment is going to develope newer techhnologies for Americans to be addicted to, or would these newer technologies offer free energy, heat, water, etc...

Iowa Mom   December 15th, 2008 5:37 pm ET

Another good pick!

Texas Teacher   December 15th, 2008 5:34 pm ET

I am so very impressed with the group of highly educated and qualified individuals of which Obama is surrounded himself. Far from the Good Old Boy Politics of the Bush administration, Obama is surrounding himself with some of the best minds in the Country! We will be getting something done in this administration besides War and padding the pockets of self and cronies! Thanks be to the Creator!

Obama is answering to the People everyday, Mr. Blitzer, to answer your question of this moment! Let's give him a chance before jumping on his every move! Remember, we want your covering of stories, NOT the biases.... of which we heard NONE at all of the Bush administration until there was no way to avoid it! Surely we can have a little Fair and Balanced coverage of this administration from the Best News Team on the Air! :)

Paul   December 15th, 2008 5:31 pm ET

It is a credit to President-elect Obama that finally in a position that requires the secretary to understand the Energy field that he selected the preeminent scientist who is at the forefront of transforming and implementing a new vision of green energy needs for America. His directorship of the national lab already has born fruit with world-wide reputation. We need more people like Dr. Chu to oversee the Energy field. President-elect Obama is true to word of appointing the most competent to change America.

Matt   December 15th, 2008 5:30 pm ET

paul (staunch Moderate)   December 15th, 2008 5:25 pm ET

What a breath of fresh air for the U.S. that we'll finally bring intelligence and science back within the federal govenment. It has been sorely lacking for a long time.
