White House press secretary sports black eye

Perino joked reporters are no longer able to wear shoes to press conferences.

(CNN) – Who knew being White House press secretary was such a dangerous job?

While President Bush emerged from the weekend's now-infamous shoe attack in Iraq without a scratch, press secretary Dana Perino appears to be a little worse for wear.

Perino was sitting to the side of the president when an Iraqi journalist threw his shoes at him Sunday.  She was inadvertently hit by a microphone as the president's Secret Service agents responded and officials scrambled to wrestle the journalist to the ground.

The full effects of the accident were clear at Tuesday's White House daily briefing, where Perino sported a bruise below her right eye and scratch just above the eyebrow.

"The shoe check-in and check-out policy will begin tomorrow," Perino joked.

Being connected to Bush's administration in any capacity is dangerous these days. Sorry that she got injured in the free-for-all, but the image of the shoe going for Bush is just too funny and too sad for words. Too sad because these are the people we supposedly went over to help, but we've done such a bad job of it, they consider the worst insult possible as appropriate commentary to our President, the author of the whole disaster. Too funny because if Bush had just shown that much speed and agility in dealing with a lot of issues such as Katrina, Ike, Rita, the economy, etc. perhaps his approval rating would be above the low two-figure range. Wait, that's sad too. Maybe it is just a twarted desire to go up and slap him upside the head that made me laugh...

Sorry about the black eye... but what a great day that was.
Freedom has arrived in Iraq... Under Saddam he wouldn't have dared do this... and would have been killed, his family stripped of all wealth and jailed or killed as well. As it is... the man was able to publicly protest without loss of life...

To the man who threw the shoe "Sir, you are very welcome"!

If she was at the side of the President, why is it that she is visible nowhere in the video? That chair at the table is empty. It's as plain as day to see

I would have to say that this is finally fair and balanced news coverage. This new international hero who has gained respect for using any means necessary to get his point, or shoe across. More than humor I feel most people would like to remember this as a sacred moment for the deceptive tools used in reverse humor, guilt, and complex of those who may have been offended.

The only other person I know of that was hit with a microphone was Prince, during the 19875 Grammys. But nobody threw a shoe at him, though! :)

Sorry Perino got a black eye, but THREE CHEERS for the guy that threw the shoes – Imagine if every American who wanted to express their feelings about Bush and his Iraq debacle (just to name one of many) were to do the same – the White House would be buried.

Joe I wish you lived in Iraq. I would not wish disrespect on Bush I or II, on Clinton, on Reagan, on Carter or Ford or even Nixon. He's the president, for crying out loud, and we don't need the disrespect of that so-called "journalist."

I really wish you could wake up in Iraq and live there for three years. I don't think you would make it.

So grow up and realize that, even if you don't like the person, you respect the office. Some jerk threw a shoe at my president, whether I like him or not, and something needs to be done about it.

When you cheer it, you are just as big a jerk.

All of these Americans who are lauding the Iraqi for behaving like an impudent child should be ashamed. It doesnt matter if you were one of the millions who voted for him, twice, he is our president. People are going to be upset with decisions Obama makes, should we excuse those who decide to throw shoes at him? Absolutely not.

I would not wish for Perino to be hurt in any way, but karna thought otherwise. She gets up there and knowingly lies her face off to all. She knows she is lying and just keeps on doing it.

Oh, yes karma. It so does come back to bite you. For all of them involved in what they have helped do to our country and other countries, I do believe your time is going to be coming up. Somewhere down the line you will have to pay the price for what you have helped them do.

the guy that threw the shoe will get the chair for giving a perino a black eye. watch, bush will use american colonial power to wield "justice" from afar. props to the man with the shoe. i wish i could have done that but in the u.s. we would go to jail for that - litigious society.

I tip a cup to the guy. This Perino chick certainly doesn't deserve to be caught in the crossfire, but any Bush affiliate has to know that they are bound to be caught up in his drama at all times.

Talk about taking one for the team! I didn't find the shoe incident funny. That level of disrespect is profound. We protest all the time in our Country over things and don't resort to disrespecting the Pres in such a way. I don't agree with almost anything Bush did or does, nor did I vote for him in 2000 or 2004, but seeing that incident made me angry. Who is that person to throw a shoe at him? Some of them over there argue over their rights and continue to oppress women and children so I guess he was throwing the shoes for men's rights. All I know is that better not happen to Obama or this woman right here will have to take her earrings off!

There are NO Cheers for the guy that threw the shoes: I'm a Democrat and Obama supporter, but I support America before party or politician! President Bush, although I never supported him, He is my President, and I dont applaud anyone trying to harm the President of the United States!
