White House press secretary sports black eye

Perino joked reporters are no longer able to wear shoes to press conferences.
Perino joked reporters are no longer able to wear shoes to press conferences.

(CNN) – Who knew being White House press secretary was such a dangerous job?

While President Bush emerged from the weekend's now-infamous shoe attack in Iraq without a scratch, press secretary Dana Perino appears to be a little worse for wear.

Perino was sitting to the side of the president when an Iraqi journalist threw his shoes at him Sunday.  She was inadvertently hit by a microphone as the president's Secret Service agents responded and officials scrambled to wrestle the journalist to the ground.

The full effects of the accident were clear at Tuesday's White House daily briefing, where Perino sported a bruise below her right eye and scratch just above the eyebrow.

"The shoe check-in and check-out policy will begin tomorrow," Perino joked.

This seems like a fitting ending:

The world wishes to take their wrath out on Bush, and it is his spokespeople who take the brunt of his failings, be it Perino or America as a whole. Bush may have ducked, but America still received the black eye reserved for him.

I do feel what happen with the invasion into Iraq was totally wrong and I am a retired soldier but that was beyond disrespectful and I do not understand some of the comments giving congrats to the "shoe guy". No matter how some of us feel about the President he is the United States President and deserves to be treated with respect. My mother taught me to respect a person's position even if I do not respect the person. It is just good home training.

do u know the other side of the story? tens of thousands of iraqi civilians has been killed. along with many US soldiers. country was in total disarray for the last few years. this guy lost part of his family, saddam was evil, no doubt, however one evil shudnt be replaced by irresponsible and violent warmongering based on false intelligence that not only did any good to both sides, but destabilize the whole region and threaten the world security as a whole.

just as saddam deserved a hanging, bush deserves more than two shoes.

He that has never sinned can throw the first stone, or a shoe. Only time can tell if any future leaders are angels, any better as human beings.

Wow! She has a real shiner! It's horrible she got hit with the microphone because the shoe thrower flug his shoe like he was playing frisbee. I might add that this is what happens when you work for a lieing WMD war starter. (Karma). The poor shoe thrower really should be let go and all charges drop. This is their custom and they should be allowed to voice their opinion however they see fit. I would mind throwing my shoes at a couple of people here in the US.

okay, i am not a fan of all bush policies, and was glad that palin-mccain combo lost the elections. i am not a US citizen. but it is shameful for anyone to think that it was ok or funny to hurl a shoe at an elected head of a state. bush represents the world's most powerful democracy, and anyone thinking that it's ok to express disagreement in this manner really does not understand what an elected official means. those being gleeful over the incident should be more ashamed than the shoe thrower himself.

Jared, you are a functional moron. Anna, how do you know that no one in Iraq is happy? You are sitting on your butt while decent men and women are serving their country. Go back and cry to your mommy that you need more text message time on your cell phone.

I guess she took one for the team, but then again, if she was beside the Pres, how did we not see her? And hit by a microphone? Whose mic and where was the mic. Makes absolutely no sense!!!

This all sounds very bogus to me.

Libs be dopes, you my friend are an ignorant person. President elect Obama is a Chrstian and anyone with half, no a quarter of a brain knows this. Why do you keep spreading lies that do nothing but try and divide our country? Can't you see what eight years of divisive politcs has brought us?

I knew this guy would become a hero to the democrats. It just goes to show how far the democrat party has sunk. Every low-life person in the world becomes their hero. Sad.

You give a country and it's people a life that's free from a man that would kill you just to prove he is the ruler and that he is in control and
a future that your kids will prosper in and just because you may not agree with the way it was done you become the most ungrateful nation in the world you say this man is a hero well why don't he come to america and throw his shoes at us because he wouldn't be a hero here see we watched them celebrate when 9-11 happened and yesterday when this happened see we may not like president bush and I am one of these people who don't but he is my president and he is over their representing the United States and that is we the people so when they disrespect him they also disrespect the people of the United States.

I don't think that anyone should be allowed to throw shoes at our president.
Even Bush. Look collectively speaking WE put that man into office and we deserve everything that happens to us because of that decision. Especially the second time around. Voting is no joke....Blind loyalty serves no one but the dictator. I hope the American People have learned their lesson when it comes to blindly following party lines and not the true measure of the man running for what is supposed to be a dignified office that means so much to this country and the rest of the world.

The black eye, like the incident itself, is quite symbolic of the entire Bush administration.
And Ms. Perino may have a black eye, but when it's gone, she'll still be able to walk. Next story, please?
