New Yorkers are roughly divided on who they want to be their next senator.
New Yorkers are roughly divided on who they want to be their next senator.

(CNN) - A new poll out Wednesday suggests there is no clear favorite among New Yorkers on who they think should replace Hillary Clinton in the U.S. Senate - and despite the buzz over Caroline Kennedy, the soon-to-be-vacant Senate seat is not necessarily hers for the taking.

According to a new survey from Siena College, 26 percent of New York voters and 30 percent of New York Democrats favor another potential pick with a famous last name - current New York attorney general Andrew Cuomo, the son of former governor Mario Cuomo.

Some 23 percent of New York voters - and 28 percent of Democrats - want Kennedy to get the post. Nearly one in five preferred one of the othe Democrats often mentioned for the post, and another one in five had no preference for their next U.S. Senator.

The top two potential choices also have nearly identical favorability ratings - 58-21 percent for Kennedy and 59-24 percent for Cuomo.

"Both Kennedy and Cuomo have high name recognition among New Yorkers, and Cuomo has run for - and won - statewide office, which may help him marginally," said CNN Polling Director Keating Holland. "Since the poll was done before Kennedy's officially announced her interest in the Senate seat, it's possible her support today is a little higher than it was before her announcement. But ultimately, the choice will be made by the Governor, not the voters of New York."

But while New Yorkers may be roughly divided on who they think should be named to the post, 31 percent believe Gov. David Paterson will ultimately pick Kennedy compared to the 16 percent who say Cuomo will get it.

I am sick of the Kennedy garbage...so what if she is the former president's daughter? She is also the niece of the idiot Teddy who let a woman drown long ago...Sarah Palin was criticized for no experience when she is the governor of a state and the commander-in-chief of the National Guard. She has had to make more decisions than the man the Dems elected to the presidency. This is all such a joke. People are not taking the running of this country seriously. Instead, a man is elected to make a statement (elected mostly by non-tax paying people), and now a woman who has done absolutely nothing except get a law degree is wanting to be a senator. Send her to Illinois and if she can straighten out that mess then talk about New York.

Mariah Fox-Perez   December 17th, 2008 3:57 pm ET

I am glad that people do not want another rich person to just get a position because of name recognition. Caroline Kennedy should just drop the idea and let a Hispanic women in New York who is more qualified than her to take Hillary's seat in the Senate.

Benst   December 17th, 2008 3:57 pm ET

Congresperson Kristen Gillibrand is easily the Most Qualifed person to be the next Senator representing New York.

Unfortunatly, "Princess Caroline Kennedy" woke up one morning and decided that instead of a pony or a dolly, she wanted to be a senator, so she called Uncle Teddy and he will arm twist Governor David Patterson until his little girl gets what she wants. It's obvious that the majority New York voters would have Never picked the Princess to be next Senator if anyone had bother to ask them. Since the Princess cann't win an election fair and square she will get Uncle Teddy to hand it to on a silver platter to go with the silver spoon in her mouth.

This is Almost as bad as the Governor of Illinois picking the next person to fill President-Elect Barack Obama's senate seat.

docb   December 17th, 2008 3:54 pm ET

It is a bit early to be running useless polls.. What percentage was upstate and what % NYC! What % is diehard/straight party ticket dem?

Hillery has yet to give up the seat because she has not been confirmed!! She is working the Senate floor as we speak...it will not be a slam dunk for her confirmation...Her cool reception on her return tell us she has not made many friends!

Paterson will make a thoughtful choice but a difficult one.

swinn   December 17th, 2008 3:53 pm ET

I'm not from New York, but if it were my choice, I'd take a Cuomo over a Kennedy any day.

Joe Tate   December 17th, 2008 3:53 pm ET

She has a one line resume'; " My father was President"
She is a spoiled little girl, but I hope she doesn't get what she wants this time.

Jennifer Xie   December 17th, 2008 3:52 pm ET

I think the Kennedy family takes our public office positions as the public transit – they can get on anytime they feel like to.
Shouldn't we at least let know what makes Caroline Kennedy qualified as a senator?

Liar Liar Pants on Fire   December 17th, 2008 3:52 pm ET

Obama wasn't either.

D   December 17th, 2008 3:52 pm ET

Why shouldn't Caroline Kennedy put her name in the pot if she wants the position. So what if she never wanted to be involved in politics before. She said that Pres-Elect Obama inspried her.

The same complainers probably think Angelina Jolie is an earthmother too

Sarah, Northern Colorado   December 17th, 2008 3:52 pm ET

Why don't they allow the state residents to choose via election, considering the people are the ones the government are governing?

SPO   December 17th, 2008 3:52 pm ET

Caroline Kennedy is just another spoiled, pampered, trust fund baby who's never worked a day in her life. Am sick of "politics of privilege". What's next? Chelsea for President in 2020?

M.Warner   December 17th, 2008 3:51 pm ET

Caroline kennedy would be a perfect choice to be Senator. She does not have to pay attention to any lobbyists and maybe can do some good for this country and eespecially education for our children.

Richard   December 17th, 2008 3:49 pm ET

Buffalo Byron Brown for Senator

RAVI   December 17th, 2008 3:48 pm ET

Caroline Kennedy belongs to Kennedy dynasty so, she should be elected through election process not selection process like how Hillary Clinton. Then she will be powerful senator. Governor should hold special election.

Steve from TN   December 17th, 2008 3:48 pm ET

Her integrity is beyond reproach. Does anyone think she would ever be involved in any situations that would impune the people of New York or the USA? She is committed to the success of our country. She is of course too wealthy to be influenced for personal gain. Nothing in her past even suggests she would do anything but her best to serve. If the good people of NY are not satisfied if she is appointed to the Sen,, in 2 yrs they can show their dissatisfaction at the ballot box. As for hear name, what is the woman to do, change it? This status neither qualifies nor disqualifies her . Good luck to whomever is chosen.

Nevada   December 17th, 2008 3:47 pm ET

Before you judge, please read what she has done for public and type of public services she has been involved. She shouldn't be disqualified just because she is Kennedy or just because she has not been part of political scene.

Jonita M   December 17th, 2008 3:43 pm ET

Phil.....Caroline has never used her married name she has always used Kennedy....

Meritocrat   December 17th, 2008 3:41 pm ET

I am completely opposed to this idea of "giving" the New York Senate seat to Caroline Kennedy. The paramount consideration has to be the interests of the State of New York. What are her credentials? What has she done?

This seat should go to some hard-working, time-tested congressman or state legislator who has paid his dues.

Please urge Gov Paterson to make his decision in the best interests of New Yorkers.

Mrs Texas   December 17th, 2008 3:41 pm ET

I think it would be great if she's selected. She would do a better job the Mrs Sarah....... Get over it and remeber what did Hillary have before Bill went into office. This is about her supporting Obama.. Lets tell the truth..

Linda, CA   December 17th, 2008 3:40 pm ET

Please, isn’t this just another pay for play scam. She supported Obama and now wants her pay back. She isn’t even qualified but will probably get it over qualified people. What a crook!

No incumbents 2010   December 17th, 2008 3:39 pm ET

To Lisa V: The other side has stricter rules for qualifying. Caroline Kennedy has never been a community organizer so you might want to ease up a bit.

Canadian POV   December 17th, 2008 3:39 pm ET

Funny, last night on CNN the pundits said that the polls showed Kennedy with a slam dunk lead. So much for polls!

Nobody can honestly compare her credentials with Caribou Barbie for crying out loud. Famous daughter/niece or not, at least she has an education, a history of charitable work and an understanding of how government is supposed to work. At least she knows what the US Constitution says and was crafted to do and she has an excellent command of the English language. Can't recall her winking at people either.

Paul   December 17th, 2008 3:38 pm ET

Sure, legacy's way more important than qualifications. What the heck is wrong with some of you? This is a perfect example of how some people are too ignorant to vote.

Laverne   December 17th, 2008 3:37 pm ET

Whether you want to admit it or not, the Kennedy's have been in public servants for this country for a long time including Caroline. She may not be the "most qualified" whatever that is suppose to be, but at least she is humble, hard working and capable of doing the job as she does have a working brain unlike the barbie doll from Alaska. She certainly should not be punished or disqualified because she is a Kennedy.

Rob   December 17th, 2008 3:37 pm ET

The problem with Andrew Cuomo is that he does not know how to get along with others, an important skill for the Senate. Whether at HUD or running for Governor, he distinguished himself by not getting along with people. We should have a more effective Senator.

Dina-Bronx   December 17th, 2008 3:36 pm ET

Andrew Cuomo has been an advocate for New Yorkers for many years. He was the Secretary of Housing and Urban Development under the Clinton administration. He did a lot of work for the homeless in New York and has been the attorney general for NY for the last couple of years.

Nothing against Caroline per se, but now she thinks she should be a senator? Why? Because she's a senator? Because she's been on a couple of charitable organizations? That's what the "priviledged" get to do!

Gov. Patterson: Pick the one who's better qualified!

Get over it   December 17th, 2008 3:35 pm ET

She is just as qualified for the job as Hillary was when she 1st ran for the Senate.

But that doesn't make it right !!!!!!!!!

Anti-Socialist   December 17th, 2008 3:35 pm ET

How can Caroline be a Senator when she has children. Shouldn't she be in the kitchen cooking with Sarah Palin instead of in Washington?

Sammie1eye   December 17th, 2008 3:34 pm ET

Great, another Kennedy riding on the family name and connections trying to get into office through the back door. Are we ever going to be rid of this family that, in perspective, has done little for the American people? Look past the so-called mystique and there is not much there. Might I point out that Clinton didn't do much for NY either, except give herself a stepping off point to get back to where she really wanted to be: DC.

Go Andrew....   December 17th, 2008 3:34 pm ET

Enough Kennedys already--Obama called for CHANGE.

Charm   December 17th, 2008 3:34 pm ET

OMG some of you people really need to get your facts straight before you come on here slewing insults about Caroline. She's an attorney and serves as a board member on several non-profit charities. Maybe she's tried to stay out of the lime light all these years, but at least she has the courage to come forward and contribute at a time when we need all the help we can get getting this country back on it's feet. As far as qualifications, she meets it.

sam   December 17th, 2008 3:34 pm ET

If we continue to select only the relatives of established politicians we might as well not have left the monarchy of England. What's with you people who worship the Kennedy clan? If she's truly interested, let her run in the 2010 election and visit every county like HRC did.

Eric C   December 17th, 2008 3:34 pm ET

Caroline Kennedy brings name only, no credentials. Like many of the uber-wealthy and elite, her sense of entitlement runs parallel to her lack of experience. Hopefully enough of the "Camelot Era" folks have died off so she isn't championed in solely on the backs of wistful dreamers.

Marge   December 17th, 2008 3:33 pm ET

Why is Caroline Kennedy supposed to get the position...Cheslea Clinton is as well qualified as she is. And there are plenty of democrats in New York who would want the job.

MARK SPORYSZ   December 17th, 2008 3:32 pm ET

It is unwise to put people in power who out of touch with reality and how the rest of us live. They are going with that name recognition thing. The Kennedy name or the Kennedys for that matter haven't done anything good for this county for a long time and I don't see it starting now. Like all the republicans saying they knew Ronald Regan, he was a looser too.

Lisa V.
What exactly are Caroline Kennedy's qualifications for a Senate seat.

sunshine   December 17th, 2008 3:31 pm ET

look what some of our so called qualified leaders are doing, caroline would be a good choice, we need trusting people.

Lue Blacknell   December 17th, 2008 3:30 pm ET

I feel that Caroline is just-or more qualified as Hillary was when she became senator. At least Caroline has lived there-Hillary probably just moved there to become senator- That was a position that Hillary needed to add a "feather to her hat" and be able to compete with Bill. You " Hillary Lovers" need to "get over it"-and I would like to know- since you love her so much-why won't you help her pay off her campaign debt? Yeah-I thought so!

Meghan   December 17th, 2008 3:30 pm ET

Please stop. Caroline Kennedy is technically qualified (ie, an age-appropriate American citizen) and qualified on an experiential level. She has a law degree which has been utilized in the writing of books and articles, and has built her career on public service. Yes, having a famous last name doesn't make one qualified for office, BUT IT DOESN'T AUTOMATICALLY MAKE HER UNQUALIFIED EITHER!!!!!!!

Dennis   December 17th, 2008 3:29 pm ET

A New York Senate seat shouln't be a consolation prize because her uncle Bobby was once (briefly) a NY senator. The seat should be more reprentative of the entire state of New York and not just NYC.

Name Dropper   December 17th, 2008 3:29 pm ET

I guess Paterson can't see that she's the wrong choice.....

Paul Lennon   December 17th, 2008 3:29 pm ET

Kennedy-Schlossberg has not proven herself. Her maiden name is not enough. Wake up New York, born rich does not make you more qualified.

Sandy   December 17th, 2008 3:25 pm ET

Whatever happened to the people deciding who represents them? Who authorized the fire sale on senate/congressional seats? Enough with these political handouts already. Too much power in too few hands. Illinois, now New York! It's time we took our nation back from these political dynastys who don't speak for us.

Irritated in Fl   December 17th, 2008 3:25 pm ET

Dave   December 17th, 2008 3:25 pm ET

Why is everyone calling her Caroline Kennedy ... she is married and has the name of (however you spell it). Just another Kennedy using her father and uncle's names to get a public job. Of course Obama promised her the seat !!! Don't kid yourself. If she doesn't get the seat it will be for one reason only, Obama doesn't want another mess like the Illinois Governor and his vacant seat.

Florida John   December 17th, 2008 3:24 pm ET

Some think she is good choice becuase she comes from a political family.... and it would be nice to see the name carried on

I come from a family of Doctors, does that make me qualified to operate? NO>>>>>> Plus do we get an inexperienced person just so a name can carry on. Let her run for office and EARN the seat.

Please, this politics game is failing you and me! Whatever happened to the best candidate?

Diana   December 17th, 2008 3:24 pm ET

I believe she is not the right person. She probably has helped many causes for education but I have never seen her in harlem or at the welfare office in new york fighting for poor people's rights. What does she know about the needy? Was she at New Orleans when Katrina?
Where was she when the poors of new york needed help? The homeless?,The brutality?
First go and get experience with these and then try to be a SENATOR.

DIANA

Laura   December 17th, 2008 3:21 pm ET

She is more EDUCATED & qualified than Sarah Palin can ever be in several lifetimes. Caroline Kennedy may be wealthy, but has spent her entire adult life advocating for causes on behalf of those less fortunate. Her resume is quite impressive people...look before casting such negative comments.

Please no   December 17th, 2008 3:21 pm ET

Please give the seat to Cuomo, Mario was a great governor, and Andrew has earned the confidence of the New York electorate. Kennedy is a Democratic version of Sarah Palin, and to Palin's credit she dosen't look like Mr. Ed. The only reason she is even being considered is because she is a Kennedy. Give the job to a real New Yorker who has earned it, not to a "Kennedy" just because they have that last name. everyone of them can't be John or Bobby, you need look no further then Ted to see that!

pam   December 17th, 2008 3:20 pm ET

cuomo, and anyone else should just step aside, they just don't want another in the seat; they're just jealous.

Ted, Washington DC   December 17th, 2008 3:20 pm ET

Como? No because he does more good as AG. Kennedy? No because not only she has not earned it but her expertise and experience is no greater than any of my pedestrian neighbors. She will not bring anything to New York and lets stop glorifying people who think they are entilted to more merely because they perceived themselves to be our aristocracy

Rose   December 17th, 2008 3:20 pm ET

That is one of the problems with the Senate, people who are not qualified get the seat just because of their name. I do NOT believe that Caroline Kennedy is qualified to be a U. S. Senator but then I guess Uncle Teddy will help her along the way, I am sure he will be pulling some strings.

Brian   December 17th, 2008 3:19 pm ET

No hope for America...Maybe we should just let Simon, Paula and Randy pick our nations leaders. "American Idol"...
God help us.

Matt   December 17th, 2008 3:19 pm ET

Please the only reason she is in consideration as opposed to the thousands of other well-educated, politically active, charitable New Yorkers out there with qualification equivalent to hers is because she has a last name that makes it easy for her to raise money.

If she is APPOINTED, it is a disaster for us Dems...mark my words. Let her run for ELECTION in 2010 and APPOINT someone that's not evidence of old-boys' network style nepotism.

Steve from Florida   December 17th, 2008 3:19 pm ET

Cuomo is a much better choice. He has more pertinent experience than Caroline Schlossberg.

Diana Ewing NJ   December 17th, 2008 3:19 pm ET

All I have read were complaints... on her being appointed.... but anyone the NY Gov. picks will be appointed... sounds like Jealousy to me...
I know she and many of the Kennedy's were raised to give back, believe she was inspired enough by Obama to come out and stop working behind the curtain.. She is intellegent, bright, accomplished... doesn't seem to have a big ego... to throw in peoples faces... Maybe that is what is bothering people..
NYorkers will be lucky if she is appointed.... and I am sure she will hold her own and work to be elected again..

Samuel   December 17th, 2008 3:17 pm ET

"Kennedys, Bushes, Clintons, Rockefellers, and on and on. No one in any of these families have worked an honest day in their entire lives for decades!!!!"

The Kennedys have worked tirelessly to make America a better place. That is simply not true. Lumping the Kennedy family together with the Bushes and Clintons doesn't make much sense either.

"It's funny, all these years she has used her married name, now it's just Kennedy."

That is patently false. She retained her last name the moment she got married.

The apparent hostility towards Caroline Kennedy is surprising. Some people seem to liken her to Paris Hilton, while in fact she is an intelligent, hard working woman that would make America proud.

god bless usa   December 17th, 2008 3:17 pm ET

I think Caroline Kennedy has alot to bring to the table. I believe her work speakes for itself and not the "kennedy" name and/or legacy. This is a very intelligent and educated woman. Hey, if Hillary was given this senate seat because of her husband's presidency; then let's be real about appointing someone who has a heart for Americans and has the background. I hope she gets the senate seat. I am thinking about writing a letter to Gov. Paterson about his appointment of the senate seat and I live in Florida. Hoping the best for you Caroline.

Just what we need...another Kennedy in office!! Enough already! Let's elect people that can get things done instead of having the same worthless families getting elected! I swear, some of the people in the Senate have to have the cobwebs knocked off in order to even stand up! I'm tired of all of them! We ALL need to be paying more attention to the people that we are electing as our lawmakers and another crooked Kennedy is not the answer!!

Lee   December 17th, 2008 3:13 pm ET

Funny how Ms Kennedy has never RUN for an ELECTED office, but now that an appointment is available - she's AVAILABLE?

Gimme a break - sounds a little like she somehow feels ENTITLED!

(I'd be willing to bet "the deal's been done"!)

Lauren   December 17th, 2008 3:13 pm ET

To Lisa V,

I hope your not serious. Caroline has not even been elected to a local school board or local county commisioner office.

I am not even going to debate Palins ability or quals. But Caroline has nothing on her resume but KENNEDY and a lifetime of avoiding the political scene.

Plus, she had to hire a high priced consulting firm to help her figure out how to get the job.

Listen, if all this country and New York want is STAR quality, then go with Caroline, but if we want substance outside of a high dollar education and a last name,, then go witht he other guy or gal.

Plus, lets be honest, what has Teddy Kennedy ever done that was REALLY that great. And what did Bobbie ever do? He got shot, that is the only reason he has the name recognition.

JohnR   December 17th, 2008 3:12 pm ET

I am so very disgusted with politics these days and the general direction the majority of politicians are heading. Then comes this, because she has money, can fit into various social situation where other privileged people go why not make her a state senator. I always thought that people entered different political positions to represent us the American public, not to service their friends and relatives. Then because other Kennedy’s tell us she is perfect for the job then we should just agree and let it be. I am so very disappointed with this situation…For the first time in many, many years I was feeling good about a political appointment “Obama” and was thinking about how we have an individual who appears to be doing this for the right reasons…I hope I am not being fooled, it would not be the first time…I have nothing personal against Kennedy and I am sure she is a very nice person unlike the rest of the locals…you know what I am talking about, everyone does. I know this means nothing but it makes me feel better for a few minutes typing this…

ARL   December 17th, 2008 3:11 pm ET

Caroline Kennedy has some nerve asking for the seat of the same woman she slapped in the primary race when she came out for Obama. Think that's a mere coincidence? Gee, can't you just hear it? "Uncle Teddy, the kids are grown and I'm bored. Can you get me a job in politics?" This was a you-scratch-my-back-and-I'll-scratch-yours plan from the get go between the Kennedys and Obama. After all, what qualifications did she have to be on Obama's VP vetting committee other than the fact that her last name is Kennedy and she has a whole bunch of relatives who are politicians? If she wants to go into politics, why doesn't she start at the bottom like the rest of the gang? Oh, I forgot–Kennedys don't have to start at the bottom or earn anything.

Alex   December 17th, 2008 3:11 pm ET

Hey Avis,
I'm with you on this one. This name recognition thing is getting out of hand. Just becauwe you are somehow related to someome who is a former popular President, does that somehow make you qualified for a Senate seat? Caroline is a very nice person, but that hardly qualifies her for a seat in the Senate. Hillary got lambasted for her alleged expectations of merely waltzing into the Presidency. How about applying the same standards to another Kennedy who has little background experience to prove she is qualified for this position.

Gail   December 17th, 2008 3:11 pm ET

Please, No! Most of us New Yorkers cringe at the thought of Caroline Kennedy or Andrew Cuomo as Senator!

Gov.Patterson, please choose Rep. Carolyn Maloney or Anthony Weiner.

Sue   December 17th, 2008 3:11 pm ET

I'm not really sure about Caroline's qualifications for politics, but then again... I'm not sure what Hillary Clinton's are either.
What is true however, is that our supposed democracy is having a very, very hard time attempting to cover up the fact that it is actually an autocracy.

Just because her family has been in politics, does NOT qualify her to have a Senate seat. Just like 8mos. as a Senator did not qualify Obama to be president.

Palin 2012   December 17th, 2008 3:06 pm ET

I am proud to see Democrats realizing that certain people are entitled to be President, Senator, etc. We Republicans have enshrined that concept in the Nations First Family, the Bush's. They are America's Presidential Family, and all must bow down when Jeb Bush decides to run for Senator. Carolyn understands what the little people need as she frequently communicates with her servants. They are happy in the knowledge that a Kennedy will be their to guide them through their pityful lives. As my party supports our hard working Wall Street executives from silly attempts by fat cat liberals in Washington to use TARP funds for Detroit, (and thereby endangering use of that money for executive bonuses), so must Democrats stand by their Princess!

Kathleen Kenney   December 17th, 2008 3:05 pm ET

Hillary Clinton's seat should NOT be given to Caroline Kennedy.
She has not the experience and there are far too many New Yorkers far more capable than she.
My advice to Caroline: spend the next 2 years letting us know your positions on important issues, follow Hillary's example and visit every county in NYS, go on a LISTENING TOUR and meet the NY public.
Then in 2 years, Caroline, make a run for Hillary's seat if the your relationship with the public is good and your ability to be an effective legislator looks promising.
Your seeking Hillary's seat now is polarizing the Democratic Party. Barack Obama needs all the support and cohesiveness he can get.
You are not helping! Remember those 18 million cracks?

Do you need to work in a field or do a job that is hard on your body to be doing an honest days work? If so I guess I don't do an honest days work.

Now I'll agree if there is such a thing in the US as the 'political nobility' Caroline Kennedy would be a part of it. But if you really think that she is not capable of the job and you can't get past her last name then you are really closeminded and are only seeing what you want to see.

Good pick her. Boot her out in 2010 since she's not the clear favorite.

ARE YOU A COMPLETE MORON?

David   December 17th, 2008 2:57 pm ET

I said before on here that Cuomo should be favored not Kennedy. She needs to run andwin something first.

California Gold   December 17th, 2008 2:55 pm ET

Frankly Ms. Kennedy brings a lot to the table. Her resume is chock full of extensive public work, her support of causes for children and education is stellar. She has not coasted on her father's name. It's a name that opens doors, but you still have to be able to ante up. A name will only take you so far. If the name bothers you then just look at the education, work history and public involvements.

Susan Jackson   December 17th, 2008 2:55 pm ET

I know people keep talking about the Kennedys well what is the difference between a Bush this and another Bush that?
I suppose it's just that's it's ok if it's a Republican.
Get over it.

CK   December 17th, 2008 2:51 pm ET

Why not Caroline. Her credentials are just as strong as Hillary's were – maybe even stronger! I think she would be a fine senator!

Katy   December 17th, 2008 2:48 pm ET

Carolyn Kennedy should be chosen only if she is competent to do the job. As the only way to figure out whether or not she would be competent is to look at her track record (she has no track record in this venue) I think it would be a mistake to consider her. If she wasn't a Kennedy, would she even be considered at all?

Lifelong Democrat Lorna Hanson Forbes   December 17th, 2008 2:46 pm ET

She is not my choice.

Phil   December 17th, 2008 2:44 pm ET

Just what this country needs another blue-blood aristocrat in office. It's funny, all these years she has used her married name, now it's just Kennedy. I was never a fan of Hillary, but at least she ran for the Senate seat. I can just image what Caroline probably said on thanksgiving day around the family table. "Uncle Teddy, I'm bored. What should I do?". These Kennedy's are all alike, they see any political office and they view it as their birth given right.
The only thing she has really done is lend her name to charities. Please Caroline, stay home, eat bon bon's and relax at the spa.

Lisa V   December 17th, 2008 2:44 pm ET

Oh, the other side is just mad because Caroline Kennedy is qualified and Sarah Palin is not.

Tom Carnesi   December 17th, 2008 2:43 pm ET

She is a famous Kennedy, however, does not have the political experience and credentials required to be an effective New York Senator to replace newely named Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton.

Since Caroline has announced her desire to become Senator, one gets the feeling that the process is over because it is so important to keep Ms Moneybags happy. Is this supposed to be her prize for supporting Obama and helping to fund his campaign? There is a not so secret rumor circulating that Caroline wants to stay close to Obama and Obama wants Caroline close by.
The position of Senator from New York should not be for sale. Gov. Patterson might want to confer with the IL Governor about that.

While Andrew Cuomo may be electable, for those who are concerned about "lagacy politicians", I would much prefer Caroline Kennedy – a bright, sensitive, and thoughtful person – than the narcisistic and self-promoting Cuomo. Haven't we had enough of career politicians and the mess they've made?

Dee   December 17th, 2008 2:40 pm ET

Avis,

Thanks for saying that. There's nothing left to say

Caroline Kennedy IS QUALIFIED...lawyer, author, comes from a political family....now because Obama got elected, we have to have his situation in all our politicans? Give me a break.

Doug Roberson   December 17th, 2008 2:39 pm ET

Pick a smart guy or gal that has put in an actual days work in the past year. Pick someone who knows what it's like to meet a payroll or struggle to make ends meet. Pick someone who can represent the average American. America just voted for change and it looks like were getting a warmed-over Clinton Administration, complete with a scandal to start off the new year.

I am a bit uneasy about the comment "all the buzz." The press has reported about Caroline Kennedy...and created the buzz. Then this article is referencing a phenomenon created by the media. While this specific article is very objective (thank you!) let's keep all stories this way, ok CNN?

Janice   December 17th, 2008 2:36 pm ET

If Caroly Kennedy is appointed to the U.S. Senate she should donate her salary to the impoverished in this country.

janet   December 17th, 2008 2:36 pm ET

i would hope that she is not picked to replace Hillary the only think she has ever done is have kids and live the good life we the Kennedy money,

Mary   December 17th, 2008 2:35 pm ET

Let's have Mrs. Chaney move to New York and run for the seat. After all, that is what Hillary did. What is wrong with her running for the seat. All Palin has is a Bachelor degree. Caroline is an attorney.

To Phil   December 17th, 2008 2:35 pm ET

I agree. In fact, Kennedy is more qualified than Clinton.

I support Caroline Kenndy.
She is so well known and can reach out to any group or person(s).
She has name recognition.
She is smart and reserved.
Caroline Kennedy owes NO ONE like other politicians do.
I believe her when she says Obama inspired her to work in government.
She has lived in NYC most of her life.
I am a big fan of Hillary Clinton and hope she doesn't stop this from happening. I would think less of her.
I want to see Caroline work for all New Yorkers including Western New York.

Anonymous   December 17th, 2008 2:32 pm ET

Caroline Shlossberg is smart and could have a brilliant law career if she wanted so. Instead, she chose to give it all up, married an innocuous, not especially accomplished, man and settled for the life of a wealthy society housewife.
There is nothing wrong with it, I would not mind trading places with Caroline, but it doesn't make her qualified for political post any more then I am qualified!

John   December 17th, 2008 2:32 pm ET

Don't really understand why she gets to "start at the top", just because she's a Kennedy. Aren't there other qualified candidates (i.e., ones who have held elective office and "paid their dues")?

Eve Catherine   December 17th, 2008 2:31 pm ET

Fran Drescher for senator. Cuomo and Kennedy aren't the only ones interested. I seriusly think that Fran is very smart and definately more prepared than Caroline Kennedy.

Andrew   December 17th, 2008 2:31 pm ET

Caroline Kennedy might have a JD from Columbia but that does NOT qualify her to become a New York State Senator. There are many who are more qualified; a JD from a law school decades ago says little about whether she's fit to run a Congressional position.

Also, I think it's preposterous how she can make a couple of rapid phone calls and announce her interest in the Senate seat like she's running a campaign. The ONLY reason she is a marginal favorite to win the vacant seat is because of her last name. Coupled with Patterson's political ambitions, she's likely to get it–hopefully, she'll be forced out of office in two years.

Brad   December 17th, 2008 2:30 pm ET

It's time to get away from political legacies including the Bushes, Clintons, and Kennedys. I live in NYS and definitely don't need a Kennedy.

No, she and the rest of the Kennedys need to go away.

The Kennedys have done enough damage to this country.

Bev   December 17th, 2008 2:29 pm ET

Well now it makes sense why she came out and endorsed Obama. I wonder if he knew she was interested in becoming senator when he picked Hilliary as Secretary of State? If she wants to become a senator she should run for senator...not be "appointed". I do not think that the Kennedy name is an automatic for becoming a senator. I agree with the previous reader...there's too many families in public office.

Dianne   December 17th, 2008 2:28 pm ET

Geez! Give her a break. She hadn't even announced her interest when this so-called poll was taken.

The last paragraph says it all. Caroline over Cuomo two-to-one!

Go Caroline Kennedy! You'll make a wonderful Junior Senator from the great State of NY.

Yep   December 17th, 2008 2:28 pm ET

I can't stand her. Go away.

Carl Justus   December 17th, 2008 2:28 pm ET

The Kennedy's have contributed more to this country since 1960 than any other family. They did not come as takers, but givers and give they have done more than any other family that I know of.
John Kennedy and Robert Kennedy gave their lives fighting for the poor and underpriviliged. Ted Kennedy has been the lion of senate fighting for the poor for more than 30 years.
Caroline Kennedy would make as good a senator as we have and she would carry on the tradition of the Kennedy family fighting for those who have no voice in government.
She would not sell her soul to highest bidder or some special interest group. I say appoint her and let her show you how to help bring America back to a government of the people by the people and for the people.

BJ   December 17th, 2008 2:26 pm ET

...and people call Illinois a corrupt state. How much is Harry Reid gonna give to Patersons re-election fund?

Billy J , TX-   December 17th, 2008 2:25 pm ET

I have been pro-Drescher since she said she would do it. Fran is not the character on TV, she is super savvy and knows how to get stuff done. A perfect replacement for Hillary. If this isn't going to be an election, but for some reason folks want name recognition then Drescher is the one!!! I agree that Caroline has never expressed interest until now, which begs the question, why not work for it the way most pols would. If they are just 'giving' it then Drescher is a better bet in my book.

Ron   December 17th, 2008 2:24 pm ET

Have we lost all our sence of reasoning. We have enough unqualifed
people in our government. Do not add another, just because the Name in Kennedy. We are not a very educated voting public....Wise up voters and demand an election.

ran   December 17th, 2008 2:23 pm ET

Why do so many hate having a senator who would be for the people and not for special interest. Caroline has work hard for the people much like her Uncle Ted has and in keeping with the Kennedy's of "to much is given much to give ideals". Cuomo is another politicians who is power hungry/special interest driven.

New Yorkers Caroline would make your state and this country proud. She really would be a people senator.

Bert   December 17th, 2008 2:23 pm ET

We fought a revolution to rid ourselves of political dynasties. We do not need another Kennedy.

Mike   December 17th, 2008 2:23 pm ET

Why is no one mentioning Kennedy's LACK OF EXPERIENCE?

When Palin was nominated as the VP candidate that was all you heard, and she has more political experience the Kennedy.

A clear double standard here.

Mickie   December 17th, 2008 2:23 pm ET

No matter who he appoints, that person will have to run again in 2 years. For those who say she has not done anything, she has done a lot of gratis legal work but just because she doesn't toot her own horn about it all these years, people think she has not done anything. People really love the blowhards.

Paula Wesley   December 17th, 2008 2:21 pm ET

Is Fran Dressler college educated?

roberta wickham   December 17th, 2008 2:20 pm ET

I think the Kennedys have "delighted" us long enough. Robert Kennedy's brief tenure in our (New York's, that is) Senate seat has now been expensively commemorated by naming the Triboro Bride after him.

I think need to look to the talent we have already elected to Congress and to the State Legislature for somebody to replace Hillary Clinton

Quite a lot of the pro-Kennedy noise you are hearing is from people who don't live in New York. Who gets to represent New Yorkers in Washington is simply none of their business.

NY republican   December 17th, 2008 2:20 pm ET

Avis – it is obvious that you have not seen or heard what Caroline has been doing in and for NY and the rest of the country. Raising money for untold charities, Practicing Constitutional law, etc. The qualifications a lot of New Yorkers are looking for, she has in abundence. 2 of them are she is NOT a career politician and SHE LIVES IN THE STATE.

Julia G. Davila   December 17th, 2008 2:18 pm ET

I believe that, our next senator should be elected among the most qualified people in New York, not simply because Caroline kennedy gave her support for President Obama.

earle,woodstock,vt   December 17th, 2008 2:16 pm ET

Pathetic, this country is so gone,it makes the "Old England " (British Empire) we fault so valiantly against for freedom (1700's Independence) seem like a dream that never happened! PS, Once they (IL,NY) get in office, their in for "Life",...

Karen Molitor   December 17th, 2008 2:16 pm ET

I think the average US citizen has finally had enough "Kennedy" and other dynasty family hoopla.

KG   December 17th, 2008 2:16 pm ET

This is too funny. Caroline Kennedy never showed any political aspirations. But now, that she can get a Senate seat with very little effort on her part, she's all for it. True example of entitlement. If she'd have to work for it, she doesn't want it. When it can just be given to her, she's for it. Worst thing about it is, she actually thinks she's deserving of it. New York, you deserve better.

Paula Wesley   December 17th, 2008 2:16 pm ET

She's the best and the brightest. Her family has sacraficed much for America- Joseph Jr, John, and Bobby. Hillary and Palin had less experience when they became senator and governor and they are doing very well according to thier constituents.

Dennis   December 17th, 2008 2:15 pm ET

A law degree and philanthropic work do not a Senator make.

This whole business of appointing Senators, under ANY conditions, is ridiculous. It isn't democratic. I don't see why they can't leave the seat open and hold a special election now to fill it until 2012.

Running for office means getting vetted, means dealing with public scrutiny...neither of which are a bad thing intrinsically.

Tom   December 17th, 2008 2:14 pm ET

While I am not necessarily opposed to Caroline Kennedy to be my Senator (I'm in NY) by the same token, I cannot support her until I hear from her. let her speak to the voters so as to make a case for herself. Then I would certainly agree to consider her. Certainly, fundraising would not be a problem for her.

Inthistogether   December 17th, 2008 2:13 pm ET

Whoever is chosen will have to run for the office in 2010. That will both test the appointee democratically and from a resources (campaign) standpoint. Caroline has been around politics her whole life, is a well educated individual and dedicated to the public interest. To her credit she has not played off of her celebrity, but becoming involved in Obama's campaign has obviously inspired her to come out of the shadows. Good for her.The fact that she is a Kennedy should not be considered one way or the other but the decision belongs to the Governor. Whoever is chosen the voters of New York will have their say in two years.

Obviously, Andrew Cuomo would win an election against Caroline Kennedy if it were held today. But then again, as deserving as he may be, Cuomo is also political "royalty."

Check the facts   December 17th, 2008 2:10 pm ET

FIRST Why don't you check Carolines education / what she has accomplished in her life time and if Caroline isn't considered qualified WHO IN THIS WORLD IS?

Fess up the real truth is you just don't like the name .if it isnt race, gender, middle name ,last name ,vetted, qualified ,religion on and on as in the last round it will be whatever word they can dream up to cover for what their real reason is .

Trace   December 17th, 2008 2:09 pm ET

I'm a big believer in the pecking order of rank and 'wait til it's your turn'. Caroline is a part of one of the most prominent politically rich family of humanitarian history and relief of our time but the fact of the matter is her abilities as an effective 'servant of the public' is mired in timidity, obscurity and reluctance. As the old adage comtemplates, "...whom much is given much is required...(to give back)". Although charmed and quietly intelligent and supportive, I don't believe it would be right to give her a senate seat that would potentially go to someone else who is more qualified and doesn't have the name Kennedy.

Anonymous   December 17th, 2008 2:08 pm ET

There is absolutely no reason to select Ms schlossberg to be Senator notwithstanding some supposed long-overdue "legacy". i have no experience either. I'm running too. I'll call the Governor today.

Iowa Mom4   December 17th, 2008 2:04 pm ET

Have any of you bothered to find out what Caroline's qualifications are?

It is not Caroline’s fault her name is Kennedy or was born into a moneyed family. She could have been wasted space like Paris Hilton but she has chosen another path. . . . keeping a low profile and working gratis for the good of children, seniors, education, etc.

Too bad her name is not Jane Doe. Maybe then you malcontents would be OK with her selection.

Research before you submit your inane comments about something you evidently know nothing about except that her name is Kennedy.

xcusme   December 17th, 2008 2:03 pm ET

Is she qualified? She should not received the seat because she is a Kennedy. Present it to the people and let them vote. We still live in a democracy. Or have we become a birthright nation?

Province of Saskatchewan Canada for Obama/Biden   December 17th, 2008 2:03 pm ET

As an outsider looking in. I truly believe that Carolyn Kennedy has the tenacity and the qualities to be a good Senator. Give her that chance and opportunity to lead.

Mari   December 17th, 2008 2:00 pm ET

Even though I admire and like the Kennedy Clan, especially for their sacrifice and their service to their Nation.

I do not see Caroline as senator. Nothing personal, I just believe that real-world-experience like working for a living is necessary to truly understand the regular people that Congress serves.

Pamela, OH   December 17th, 2008 2:00 pm ET

Whatever, we've seen some raunchy, devious people running for an office. At least Caroline is qualified and comes from good stock, and she's smart. New York could do a lot worse.

NY should show that it really meant "change" when it voted for Obama. No Kennedy or Cuomo, pick someone who isn't part of the politiacl dynasties – and someone who has shown he/she is not utterly partisan.

Maybe even pick a minority – when did NY last have a black or hispanic senator?

Tim   December 17th, 2008 1:57 pm ET

If people in the U.S really want to see change in this country, then they are going to have to stop electing these "Families" into office.

I would like to know why Caroline Kennedy is suddenly interested. Was it an impulsive, emotional choice? Senator Ted Kennedy will probably have to retire due to illness. The legacy factor shouldn't matter. I would prefer to see her run for office, rather than be appointed under these circumstances.

Wendy NC   December 17th, 2008 1:47 pm ET

This woman is very qualified. So maybe she hasn't been all over the country touting herself or running for office, because she focused on raising her family first. Now the kids are mostly grown and she can do this without family compromise. She has a law degree from Columbia and is licensed in NY and DC. Her work has been notable, although done quietly and out of the spotlight. She grew up surrounded by politics, so don't think for a moment that she doesn't understand. When you compare them...Hillary was an attorney, then exposed to the public as First Lady. Caroline is an attorney and exposed to the public through a very politically inclined family. They are all wealthy in their own right, which means they get into politics for service, not personal gain. I would love to see her be the NY Senator.

bjm   December 17th, 2008 1:47 pm ET

Kennedy, in her own right, is an excellent choice for this senate seat.

Charles L. Shaw, Liverpool, NY   December 17th, 2008 1:46 pm ET

NO and NO to both. The citizens of NY State, not just NY city needs to be representitive. Ms Kennedy is here today in Syracuse to see for herself where it was, she has never been up to central new york before. And for Mr. Cuomo he too is a city slicker, born too rich and has no connection to the vast amount of our great state.
We the citizens of NY need leadership who view all of the citizens equally, not just those who can make large campaign contributions.

Tony   December 17th, 2008 1:46 pm ET

Someone should let Ms. Caroline know that being named to the Senate is NOT a birth right.

Bill A   December 17th, 2008 1:46 pm ET

I'm sick of the Kennedys.. There is no reason a name should get her a seat.

Arkansausage   December 17th, 2008 1:44 pm ET

Aside from her last name, Caroline Kennedy has approximately ZERO qualifications for this position.

Enough of the political dynasties already - that kind of thing is what got us in the mess we're in right now. Let's start choosing the best people for the job, not just those who have the "right" last names.

karen-phoenix   December 17th, 2008 1:44 pm ET

Caroline is more than qualified. Look up her qualifications, education and what she has done to better the public schools in New York. She grew up in New York, married in New York and her children were born and grew up in New York!!! Far more qualified than even Hillary!!!

Mickey-Texas   December 17th, 2008 1:44 pm ET

Caroline is one of the most people conscience persons I have ever known to seek a Senate Office. I say, " Let Freedom Ring!" You go Caroline. It has nothing to do with a dynasty but rather everything to do with the betterment of these United States!

Mike S. New Orleans   December 17th, 2008 1:43 pm ET

Let's abandon the "Lucky Birth Club" method of appointing presidents and senators.

Lyndon from CA   December 17th, 2008 1:43 pm ET

Sorry Andrew, try going for Governor of New York instead. You will be following in your father's footsteps with that move. I think you will beat David Patterson hands down, even if you don't get your party's nomination.

JJ12345   December 17th, 2008 1:41 pm ET

I think she is qualified to be a Senator however the comparasions with Hillary, Franken, and the Govenator are incorrect. She would be appointed while the others ran a campaign and were elected. I am sure there are others that have been involved with state politics for years that may be a better choice. it does seem that she would get it based on the Kennedy name (funny her married name is not mentioned). Everyone knows who she is so there is the recognition but I have heard many on these boards say that America owes it to her. We as a country certainly dont owe it to her, she needs to earn it.

Once you vote Black   December 17th, 2008 1:38 pm ET

Caroline has the good will of Obama and Reid and a long history of really helping people. As a kid from Flushing Queens I think she would be a great choice. She cares, she is smart, and has an extensive network which will make her effective. Besides, I love the Kennedy family.

TexAnnie *-*-*-*-* I've been in this game of politics for close to 40 years now   December 17th, 2008 1:38 pm ET

I would pick Fran Drescher before Caroline Kennedy– simply because Fran Drescher has actually been doing advocate work on her own for many years– and because she didn't come out in the media acting like the seat should just be given to her. Caroline may be a really nice person, but I get the feeling she's acting liking some rich little kid saying "Daddy, I want this and I want it now and if I don't get it I'll throw a tantrum".

NY republican   December 17th, 2008 1:37 pm ET

We don't need another "career politician" for or from NY (or anywhere else) representing us. Caroline is my pick! Most of all because she is not a "politician".

Steve Ryan   December 17th, 2008 1:37 pm ET

This is great! We have a Gov. who was not elected to the office who may appoint a woman to the Senate that nobody got to vote for! Some say she's as qualified as Hillary. I say NO! Hillary ran a campaign and was elected to the office!

Terry   December 17th, 2008 1:34 pm ET

She shouldn't become senator simply because she's a Kennedy. The most you've heard this woman talk is about Obama. That's it! That doesn't qualify her to become Senator. Get someone with experience please not just a name.

The Real Issue   December 17th, 2008 1:33 pm ET

The Real Issue is that Caroline Kennedy is campaigning hard for the Senate Seat and will probably obtain. Everyone else including Cuomo is 2nd fiddle for that seat. And that's the issue!!!

The Real Issue   December 17th, 2008 1:33 pm ET

The Real Issue is that Caroline Kennedy is campaigning hard for the Senate Seat and will probably obtain. Everyone else including Cuomo is 2nd fiddle for that seat. And that's the issue!!!

Mike H.   December 17th, 2008 1:30 pm ET

Cuomo may also be a famous name but at least he has been elected to high office and has clear qualifcations for the job. Kennedy has nothing but a name.

Phil in KC   December 17th, 2008 1:30 pm ET

Split it out by age and I suspect you'll see that older voters go for Kennedy, while younger voters go for Cuomo. Just my guess, but I bet I'm right.
Either one would be fine, as far as I'm concerned. But, emotionally, I do prefer Kennedy.

JG   December 17th, 2008 1:30 pm ET

I think everyone can agree that if Gov. Patterson picks Caroline Kennedy, it's pure politics and not b/c she's the most qualified.

Personally, if Robert Kennedy, Jr. was chosen I wouldn't have a problem w/ it b/c he's actually worked a day in his life...not "volunteered," but actually held a job and ran a business.

Caroline is doing this purely b/c she enjoys the spotlight she had when stumping for Obama, and now wants more. This is pure hubris on Kennedy's part; plus, don't compare her to Hillary Clinton; Hillary Clinton actually ran for the office, campaigned for it, and has worked more than a few jobs in her life.

Caroline has run on the coat tails of her name and father and now b/c she was on the stage a few times for Obama, she wants more and more of it. It's really pathetic....she couldn't make a name for her self, but feels entitled to a high govt office for no other reason than she's a Kennedy.

eddieblue   December 17th, 2008 1:30 pm ET

tor-

caroline schlossberg is also the niece of ted kennedy, a man who let mary-joe kopechne drown and then tried tto pin the murder on his "poor" cousin, joe gargan..

The Kennedy's are bootleg royalty – most of them are thugs.

But they do have great hair and healthy teeth!

Henry Miller, Cary, NC   December 17th, 2008 1:29 pm ET

Does it really matter which "soak the (so-called) rich" Democrat they pick? They're both going to be after the contents of our wallets.

gt   December 17th, 2008 1:28 pm ET

How about Jeb Bush ,,,,,,no more Kenndys , Bushes or Clintons,,,,,please!!!!!

I told you so   December 17th, 2008 1:26 pm ET

What makes this woman qualified? She has NO public office experience.

What a crock, the Dems jumped all over Sarah Palin for having "NO EXPERIENCE" even though she has more experience than Obama and now they want Caroline Kennedy to be a Senator. What a joke.

There are several qualified Democrates who would be much better in the Senate than her. She is not entitled to anything just because of her last name. She may know issues but she is not entitled.

Make her earn her way up!

Avis   December 17th, 2008 1:22 pm ET

Is anyone else as sick and tired as I am of the political "nobility" that exists in this country? Kennedys, Bushes, Clintons, Rockefellers, and on and on. No one in any of these families have worked an honest day in their entire lives for decades!!!! And worse, they believe they are simply entitled to being elected or appointed to the most important of government roles.

Please, I know the "best and brightest" of America tend to shun serving in the public realm but it is time for this silent majority to finally come out of the shadows and take this country back from these inept families who have been destroying the soul of the great Nation simply to stoke their own egos.

Until America elects representatives based on abilities rather than popularity we are doomed to repeat the same dismal history that has played out for over 50 years.

S.B. Stein E.B. NJ   December 17th, 2008 1:22 pm ET

Patterson has to make the call. He should not be weighing the family names. He should rather be weighing how well the indivdual would perform in the Senate for the state of NY. Do these people have their own agendas they would persue in the Senate? That is something that PATTERSON has to consider. Until there is a vote, the people can express their opinion, but only one voice counts.

Phil   December 17th, 2008 1:22 pm ET

Why are so many of you acting like Caroline Kennedy is a completely silver spoon fed nudnick like Paris Hilton? Comparing her to Fran Drescher? Caroline has a J.D. from Columbia University and has done tons of gratis legal work for various children's causes. Don't act like she has nothing to bring to the table.

Stacy   December 17th, 2008 1:19 pm ET

Are we going to start bowing when she comes in the room? This is crazy....with all the people that are experienced and capable...Caroline Kennedy is the best that New York can come up with...

I bet she gets the seat.....the deal was made back during the election...wait and see.

Deborah   December 17th, 2008 1:18 pm ET

I don't recall Carolyn Kennedy ever expressing an interest in following in the "family tradition" until now. In fact, she's always kept a very low profile. I think it inappropriate for her to NOW express an interest in serving when she won't have to work for or earn it.

A_Rod   December 17th, 2008 1:17 pm ET

She's grossly unqualified for the job

obama-mama   December 17th, 2008 1:16 pm ET

Give it to Caroline. Need a fresh face

Sam Chandra   December 17th, 2008 1:16 pm ET

Caroline Kennedy does not deserve to get that Senate seat just because of her name and her other work. No one has voted for her for anything. There should be a rule that anyone appointed must have won SOME kind of public office before. It's anti-democratic to have someone appointed to a Senate seat, for whom no one has voted.
Sam Chandra
Chicagoland

eddieblue   December 17th, 2008 1:15 pm ET

Mrs. Schlossberg doesn't deserve that seat even though she thinks she is entitled to get anything she wants.

Political nepotism should be a criminal offense.

Certain families would like to think they are royalty – Kennedy,Clinton,Bush, Roosevelt.

Roosevelt was stopped from running once too often – let us make sure that people don't slip into political offices because they feel think they're entitled to whatever they want.

The press refuses to call the former Caroline Kennedy by her oresent name: Carloline Schlossberg.

But,then, we all know tht journalism is dead.

"Journalists" are political propagandaist for one party or the other.

Off with their heads!

WOW   December 17th, 2008 1:14 pm ET

Just because she is a Kennedy doesnt make her qualified to be a senator, ENOUGH WITH THE KENNEDY DYNASTY!!!!

New Yorker   December 17th, 2008 1:14 pm ET

Oh-please! I'm sure we can find a better qualified person to take over this seat than Caroline Kennedy.
Giving her the seat because of her last name is ridiculous!

Really Fran drescher is just as qualified as Caroline. They both have been advocates for important causes, both have written best sellers.
And they both have supported a presidential candidate.

sg   December 17th, 2008 1:14 pm ET

Doesn't matter if Kennedy is selected or not. The alternative ain't much better! I remember when Cuomo's father was Govenor. Mario did a lot of damage to NY. Lost a lot of manufacturing when Mario was in office.

liz   December 17th, 2008 1:12 pm ET

Listen to some of the dunder heads on here. "She's RFKs niece, let the legacy live..."

Why do we even have elections in this country? Every one is 'controversial' and requires a recount so that those believing they have a "right" to power try and get it by hook or crook.

Here's a novel idea, Chelsea can replace Caroline after Caroline replaces Hillary, (after riding the coat-tails of Bill). We can have Jeb Bush run for the presidency next time around. Who knows, maybe Roger Clinton can move to Illinois and get appointed by Blago.

The way it is now there are too many families of power, but it seems that our "Entertainment Tonight/ Jerry Springer voyeuristic populace" would rather have a body politic made more for People magazine than The Economist.

It's simply pathetic.

g   December 17th, 2008 1:11 pm ET

The legacy of Robert Kennedy- being for the Viet Nam war when his brother was president, and then being against it when running for the presidency against Johnson and Humphrey in 1968 in order to gain the young voters. What a hypocrite!

STEVE R   December 17th, 2008 1:10 pm ET

SIMONE   December 17th, 2008 1:07 pm ET

There are so many people that would want another Honest, Upright, God Fearing, Woman that wants the best for the people in the Senate. Now the Media is saying the same thing about C. Kennedy as they did about Senator and now President – Elect Obama. So, keep trying to Strike Fear in the American People and see what Happens. The Republicans have just about distroyed America and you-all seem to be doing the same thing with trying to put someone in office that means US not a bit of good. I know that you-all won't print this but I am sure that you'll read it yourselves.

Don   December 17th, 2008 1:06 pm ET

Amazing! Tor thinks Caroline is the daughter of Robert Kennedy. Wrong! New Yorkers must have the intelligence of an Illinois voter. They take anything that is shoved down their collective throats without thinking. A lady from Arkansas who never lived in NY comes to mind. When did NY lose its ability to think? Next time this happens I hope you end up with Pdiddy.

Debra   December 17th, 2008 1:05 pm ET

So the choice is current New York attorney general Andrew Cuomo, the son of former governor Mario Cuomo or Caroline Kennedy. I can see that Andrew Cuomo is qualified – a good choice. So why is Caroline Kennedy qualified??? Are we talking about entitlement here? She is rich and famous – but why is she entitled to be a state senator???? Shouldn't the pick be someone qualified????

Laura, Boston   December 17th, 2008 1:04 pm ET

@tor....that is a crazy reason to make someone a Senator. Robert Kennedy had children and many other nieces and nephews. Why should one of them be picked?

Chelsea Clinton is the daughter of Hillary Clinton the senator of NY. Why isn't she chosen as the next junior Senator of NY

Pamela - Oceanside, Ca   December 17th, 2008 1:04 pm ET

I think she is more than qualified. She has been in political life her entire life. She knows the commitment that one must have to be in that life. For Christ sake she lost her Dad and the rest of her family wanting to do for our country. Why can't she do it? I say let her show her stuff for the next 2yrs and see if she even wants to do it for a full term. She might not even like it. If I could vote for her she would have it hands down. She couldn't do any worst then any of the others in there.

ch   December 17th, 2008 1:03 pm ET

Cuomo deserves the seat.

And NOBODY worked harder to EARN the seat than Hillary in 2000. She campaigned for over a year, visited all 62 counties, participated in 3 televised debates and won over the voters as evidenced by her landslide vicotry on election day 2000.

All this despite the fact that the GOP right wing smear machine spent 60 Million trying (and once again failing) to defeat her.

Could anyone ever fill Hillary's shoes? Doubtful.

CHANGE HAS COME TO AMERICA - FINALLY!!!   December 17th, 2008 1:00 pm ET

she is waaaaaaaaaaay qualified more than Hillary Clinton before the former first-lady was elected as a senator!

Caroline Kennedy's heart and soul has always been for NY and she has championed education and civil rights isssues far more than these career politicians who are quick to call her names and say that her name recognition is equal to J-lo!

she is not a politician; but in these difficult and trying times, she is willing to STEP UP and take the challenge and fight for ordinary americans. GIVE HER A BREAK!

AMERICANS DESERVE BETTER AND CAROLINE KENNEDY IS WAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAY BETTER THAN ALL THE NAMES THAT HAVE BEEN BANDIED AROUND!!!!!!

New Yorker   December 17th, 2008 1:00 pm ET

After all, she is not a Chicagoan, or a lawyer or politician from Ilinois.

Ngwa Emmanuel   December 17th, 2008 1:00 pm ET

Let us give this lady a chance may she has some thing to prove.

mike   December 17th, 2008 12:59 pm ET

I dont think she get the seat either and please Rolan Martin, just because she supported Obama do not compare her to Hillary. Hillary was elected twice.

Mike, Syracuse NY   December 17th, 2008 12:56 pm ET

As sad as Caroline's family history is, it's not a good reason to appoint her Senator. Cuomo is vastly better qualified.

Spider   December 17th, 2008 12:55 pm ET

RR-

Kings and Queens are not "appointed".
The Kennedy's have had a political dynasty since the 50's.

Ten bucks says you're one of those Obominations that has just been awakened to the political landscape. One filled with Hope for Change. Happy hoping, friend.

AJ   December 17th, 2008 12:53 pm ET

The overwhelming sense of entitlement that Caroline Kennedy has shown by even asking for this office is astounding. Caroline Kennedy has done no public service nor had the gumption to fight the good fight over the past eight years. If Caroline Kennedy is serious about public service she should actually run for office and gain her seat by convincing the most voters that she is the one for the job. Go back to your Park Avenue apartment Caroline, you know nothing about the lives of ordinary Americans nor do we think you really care.

Laura, Boston   December 17th, 2008 12:53 pm ET

Is Governor Paterson beholden to the Kennedy's. If not, than why shouldn't he choose the most qualified candidate.

People say Hillary wasn't qualified but she had to campaign for her seat and worked extremely hard to win the seat to begin with. It wasn't given to her because of her name.

Sure "Camelot" buffs want a fantasy again to bring them back to the days but reality says we live in a rough world. Terriorism hit New York and New York needs the most qualified person not the most romantic one to become the junior Senator.

CanIcallyouJoe   December 17th, 2008 12:51 pm ET

The only reason she is being considered is because of her name.

I work in the computer industry. I have numerous certifications from industry organizations and awards from industry authorities.

My sister, however, cannot "cut and paste" to save her life.

Having the same last name does not mean a person would do well in the same position.

Tina   December 17th, 2008 12:51 pm ET

What a slap in the face to Hillary Clinton and her supporters. How would Obama feel if his seat was given to someone who betrayed him?

J.P.   December 17th, 2008 12:50 pm ET

Yeah, is there anyone else, ANYONE, ANYONE else besides a Kennedy, Clinton or Bush qualified to run for office in this country?

When does the revolution begin? Oh, I'm sorry to have bothered you and diverted your attention away from your iPod or other technological life-distraction.

FreeNLovIt   December 17th, 2008 12:50 pm ET

Good, let her be the Senate for NY and see U all in 2010!

dz in Austin   December 17th, 2008 12:50 pm ET

I'm a life time Democrat and I LOVE the Kennedy's and all their good works. That doesn't mean Caroline (wonderful as she may be) should automatically go to the top rung of the ladder. I'd like to see her earn it just like Hillary did, by going to the people and asking their permission to serve them. You can't just all of a sudden decide you want to play too, and you should get to bat first. Caroline hasn't earned that position. This isn't Camelot, it's the real world.

EW   December 17th, 2008 12:49 pm ET

No more name recognition politics! We fought the British over this kind of thing in 1776. The political "dynasties" must be ended.

Larry   December 17th, 2008 12:49 pm ET

"Both Kennedy and Cuomo have high name recognition among New Yorkers, and
Cuomo has run for — and won — statewide office, which may help him marginally," MAY help him maginally????????

Doesn't" experience "make any difference to Democrats any more,I know it meant nothing for your choice for president, but it appears that if you didn't get experience with the Clinton admin.,you just don't need it!!

It's all in the name

Allison   December 17th, 2008 12:49 pm ET

So the current qualifications for U.S. Senate are to kiss up to Obama, stab Hillary Clinton in the back, throw some big bucks at the Dem party, have the President-elect and your Uncle Teddy make some calls on your behalf and you're in. What a joke!!!

Uncle S.A.M.-Virginia   December 17th, 2008 12:47 pm ET

I think Caroline is the right person for the job. She's not a career politician like Cuomo is. On top of that, I like the kennedy family better than the Cuomos.

Upstate New York Voter   December 17th, 2008 12:46 pm ET

Apparently what's good for New York State, the WHOLE state, is of little interest or concern to powerful Democrats.

Who cares if only 23 % of New Yorkers (the plain ordinary ones who haven't moved out of the state yet and just pay the OUTLANDISH taxes) think Kennedy is a good choice?

What Harry Reid over in Nevada (WHERE??) thinks is much more important.

If Paterson picks a New York City type who has NEVER even been to Buffalo, Rochester, Syracuse, Utica and all the other boring, uncool places that desperately need help, it may be the last pick Paterson gets to make.

And ps, Miss Caroline, the job isn't about fund raising among the very rich – it actually requires work, knowledge and some fight. You got up one morning and said, "OOh, I think I want to play senator – until it gets tough, not so pretty and causes me to shake hands with just anyone."

I say, go back to bed.

D.Tin   December 17th, 2008 12:45 pm ET

Are there any other potential female candidates? It would make sense that Hillary's replacement also be a female. So at this time Caroline Kennedy seems like a good pick. She is new and young, and yes her "lack" of experience in politics may be a good thing right now. Personally I think all those "lifelong" Senators need to vacate the Senate, we need new faces, new ideas and new talents to lead us forward.

Biff   December 17th, 2008 12:43 pm ET

AMERICANS...... DO YOU UNDERSTAND WHAT JUST HAPPENED??

Mobius   December 17th, 2008 12:42 pm ET

Cuomo? Kennedy?

What happened to, um, Change?

Karen   December 17th, 2008 12:41 pm ET

Given the fact that Obama's cabinet is turning out to be 80% male I think it is especially important that this seat go to a woman. That said, there are plenty of elected, qualified women in NY who deserve this seat before Caroline Kennedy. Caroline Kennedy is only being considered for this seat as political payback for her support of Obama. What a foolish thing to do in the wake of the IL scandal over his seat. If Caroline Kennedy is suddenly so interested in public office let her actually RUN for office the way Hillary had the guts to do.

Frederick in VA   December 17th, 2008 12:41 pm ET

Caroline Kennedy is the most famous so she will get it. That is why Hillary Clinton won so easily when she did, she is famous... the culture of celebrity dictates the decision when talking about places like NY or CA.

Buck Jackson   December 17th, 2008 12:40 pm ET

Are than any other children of dead Presidents around that can also be nominated? I mean, if that is the leading qualification...

I have nothing against Caroline Kennedy. I respect her charitable work as well as her education. However, she is hardly qualified to be a US Senator. Her appointment would be largely legacy and socially divisive. Let's get somebody in there with relevant and tangible experience.

In terms of qualification... Paris Hilton. Put brains in her head, give her an education, and have her do some charity work and you have Caroline Kennedy.

LIP   December 17th, 2008 12:39 pm ET

Surely a state like New York with the greatest ethnic diversity of the US, has more qualified people than Caroline Kennedy for this Senate seat. Ms Kennedy is just one person amongst millions...can't anyone come up with anyone...maybe Fran Drescher, as she has been an advocate for many issues and has truly done a great deal to deserve at the very least, an opportunity to be amongst the running.

tor   December 17th, 2008 12:39 pm ET

Caroline Kennedy is the nice of the slain senator of New York Robert Kennedy; let his legacy live by appointing her as the next senator of New York

I wonder why people like Roland Martin believes Caroline Kennedy is qualified for senate, while Serah Palin, a sitting governor, is not fit for anything? CNN's Campbell Brown should weigh in on this one. Kennedy or Palin, who is more qualified?

J S Ragman   December 17th, 2008 12:33 pm ET

I have always admired the Kennedy family but kept it in perspective and not worshipped them. Maybe I'm sounding old fashioned but the tattoo needs to go. Her parents must be rolling over in their graves. What is it with all of these highly intelligent(?) young people getting tattoos. Don't any of them realize that this is often a knee-jerk decision with possible long term ramifications?

rachel   December 17th, 2008 12:31 pm ET

Oh well, I really dont think anyone should get appointed to a senate seat. They should have to run and get elected... so caroline or cuomo should have to run like Clinton, it should be up to the people of new york and if they are looking for someone with a name so be it.

chuck   December 17th, 2008 12:30 pm ET

I DON'T BELIEVE IN POLLS BUT I DO BELIEVE IN CAROLINE KENNEDY. SHE COMES FROM A GOOD BLOODLINE AND HER STOCK IS STILL RISING.

Caroline Kennedy is not qualified to run for Govenor of Alaska, but because she is the last living link to Camelot, I'm sure she will get the job....of Senator, of course. How can anyone want to put more leftist in the Senate.

Look at the states run by Democrats...Illinois, New York, Michigan and California (Arnold's no Repub...). These places are broke, suffering, corrupt and hopeless. Just another nail in America's coffin.

NO to Caroline   December 17th, 2008 12:27 pm ET

Let's hope the Gov. of New York doesn't cave into the pressure being placed on him by the Kennedys and Reid to pick Caroline.

Americans have had enough of the Corruption and Special Favors expected by politicians.

If Gov. Patterson GIVES AWAY the Senate Seat to Caroline simply because she is a Kennedy then he is not better than Gov. Bog of Illinois. One expects monetary reimbursement while the other will expect special favors in the future.

ENOUGH OF THE CORRUPTION

There are several ELECTED officials in New York who have won the hearts and trust of the voters and they deserve and have EARNED the right to the Senate Seat.

If Caroline is serious about being a Senator then she should EARN it by running in 2010 just like every other person who isn't in office would be required to do.
