Bloomberg declines to endorse Kennedy

New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg, pictured here in a 2004 file photo with Caroline Kennedy, has refused to back Kennedy in her bid for a New York Senate seat.

New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg, pictured here in a 2004 file photo with Caroline Kennedy, has refused to back Kennedy in her bid for a New York Senate seat.

WASHINGTON (CNN) – New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg declined Thursday to endorse Caroline Kennedy as Hillary Clinton’s successor, but added that he knows “exactly” who should be the next senator to represent his state.

But he wouldn’t give a name.

Bloomberg did praise Kennedy saying that “she’s very competent” and “she’s done a lot for New York City,” but added that he is not in the position to publicly endorse any prospective replacement for Clinton, who is President-elect Barack Obama’s designate for Secretary of State.

“I should stay out of the race, personally,” Bloomberg said during an appearance on ABC’s ‘The View.’

“It’s not my call. If it were my call to pick somebody, I know exactly …,” added Bloomberg, who was immediately asked “Would you pick her?”

“I can’t tell you, because then I’d be getting involved,” Bloomberg responded.

Kevin Sheekey, Bloomberg’s deputy mayor, is supporting Kennedy’s bid to be appointed to the seat by New York Gov. David Paterson.

Bloomberg also noted that Paterson is “lucky to have a number of different candidates” to consider for the seat.

I don't understand why Caroline Kennedy thinks she can just walk into the job as senator. She has never done one thing for the public. She has not campaigned for the poor, the only thing she has done is jump on obama's band wagon. WHY SHOULD THAT QUALIFY HER TO BE SENATOR.

There are plenty of other politicians who have raised money to run for their postions, have endorsed and written laws to benefit the public and worked for the state of New York. It is ridiculous for her to think she can jump into the seat, just because of her father's name.

Caroline Kennedy is as qualified to be a Senator as anyone seeking the job.

She comes from a political family and has been part of political discussions all of her life. She is an attorney. And she has a rich history of public service behind the scenes.

After what happened to her Father, her Uncle, and her Brother.... I am not surprised that it took her this long to want to in the public eye! I respect her for coming out now.

She will be a very good Senator and representative of the people. I mean if Sarah Palin was considered ready for the VP role.... Caroline Kennedy is ready for the highest office in the land.... and even Queen for that matter. *LOL*

I hope the residents of NYC refuse to endorse him next election.

The citizens voted on term limits. He convinced the council to do away with them, disregarding what the people voted on. Claims it's a bad economy, that he should be allowed to run for a third term because of the bad economy.
Just one thing... Sure, Wall St. happens to be in NYC. Does he really think national businesses are going to listen to a mayor.

Why did you have to be so disrespectful in saying the name Kennedy or Clinton or Obama does not mean "God the Almighty,

You, and others like you, should take a long look at was is happening to the USA.

This is all well and good, but what about the seat she might take. it behooves me to ask a question regarding Hillary and her new job as Secretary of State. Today Bill released his foundation list for all those giving from 1million to 25 million and the list was incredible. Is there any conflict of interest going on here and whether there is or isn't, won't Hillary be wearing two hats with performing her job for Obama and at the same time, creating a list of more or future donors. Doesn't she in effect become a sales rep for Bill?

When he was on The View, he said he wanted to stay out of the race. He didn't endorse any candidate and he didn't specifically say he didn't support Kennedy. He just said he is staying out of it. Once again, the media twists the truth to fit their story.

Caroline Kennedy is just as intelligent as "Mary Bono" who is the wife of Sonny Bono. She took his Senate seat when he deceased. Mary Bono had no experience as a Senator, but still got the post. Caroline Kennedy will do what's right ....SHE HONEST! Horray for Caroline, she'll do a fine job.

Kind of absurd the complete lies told in these comments.
Let's all be clear-Bloomberg never endorses anyone. He stayed mum during the Presidential election as well. Maybe because he doesn't want to make any enemies, maybe not. Who cares.
@ David from Minneapolis-have you been to New York? Guns and bibles? Please. And please review the final vote count for Obama, I don't think "resigned" is how I would describe his victory here.
@ Citizen from NY-as a resident of the state, I agree these new taxes are ridiculous. But I do NOT agree on the smoking wherever you want-I am a HUGE fan of the banning in the restaurants/bars. YOUR choice shouldn't invade MY right to breathe.
@ Give Me a Break-he wasn't shot down. He's running for mayor again, the City Council OKd it.

This man is liying. He knows full well that his preference is Kennedy. His deputy mayor and political advisor has been endorsing her across the state. If this is his attempt to be above the fray it is too late. The story broke yesterday. Just another attempt to guide the governance of New York state and New York City to his liking. Throw the bum out.

    You said:
"Good, the name Kennedy or Clinton or Obama does not mean "God the Almighty, all-knowing and all wise," the Savior of the world, automatically."

The sarcasm here is really ironic since Conservative Republicans unanimously pray to Lord Reagan and genuflect at the mention of his his name. Try coming up with one Conservative Republican who did not think Reagan was great. When it comes to Godlike poll numbers Reagan is matched only by Saddam Hussein in one of his "honest" elections.

I don't understand these americans who are mouthing out ad nauseum about a young lady that is part of one of the US's greatest legacy. Not enough experience ? What did Clinton have as experience when she got the seat ? If her husband wouldn't have been a President, she would be a complete stranger.

Who the hell would you people want on the NY senate seat ? Bin Laden ?

Mrs. Kennedy has something very few people have: RESPECT for EVERYBODY. Whatever your race or your gender.

Hey guess what, HRC never had a real job. Sweet Caroline has worked-look it up. HRC is what we call a carpetbagger. SHE MOVED TO NYC TO RUN FOR THE JOB. Sweet Caroline has lived there most of her life. PUMA and Neo-cons can blow it out your butt.

What a cop out. While I don't believe that Ms. Kennedy has an entitlement to the postion just because she comes from the American Royal Family, I do think that Mr. Bloomberg should come out with his endorsement or lack thereof. To say that he doesn't want to get involved is an abandonment of h is responsibility as a leader in New York's largest city. And then to say he knows who it should be but refuse to disclose that person's identity is a pure cop out.

I have been a big fan of Mr. Bloomberg for years and would have voted for him had he run for the presidency. So his lack of willingness to get involved is a big disappointment.

Am I missing something? Is Caroline Kennedy no longer married? There is never any mention of a husband. I thought her name is now Caroline Schlossberg (?) or something like that.
She certainly does not seem qualified to be a U.S.Senator. Her priviliged lifestyle is not enough. How can she represent New York's "middle America"?
Guess is your last name is Kennedy, you can get whatever you want.
