Caroline Kennedy's public campaign may box in Paterson

Kennedy has been touring the state as she pushes for a Senate appointment.
Kennedy has been touring the state as she pushes for a Senate appointment.

(CNN) - Caroline Kennedy is on a public campaign for Sen. Hillary Clinton's Senate seat, which may make it difficult for New York Gov. David Paterson not to send President John F. Kennedy's only living child to Washington.

While she has to win over only one voter - Paterson - Kennedy essentially began a political campaign for the seat, which was once held by her uncle, Robert F. Kennedy, with a visit to upstate New York on Wednesday.

Watch a Kennedy Senate rival weigh in on her chances

And on Thursday, Kennedy meet with civil rights activist Al Sharpton, an influence in national and New York politics.

She's not stupid. She knows how the game is played. Evidently, she has decided she really wants this. Of course, she's probably getting some advice from some very politically savvy relatives.

I hope the gov paterson chose Caroline because she would be good for NY school reform for NY

absolutely NOT. i will NOT live in NY any longer if she buys that seat soley on the fact taht her last name is Kennedy. she would never have ever done this if she actually had to get elected. we have a Democratic Governor who has no idea what he's doing anyway, so how can we trust him to make this choice?

I don't get it. When John Kennedy Jr. was alive people were bugging him about running for an office. Now that Caroline has said that she wants to serve the public–what's the big deal? She has the same stock from the same family. The Kennedys have given a lot to this country, I say let her have the position. If she doesn't measure up, there's 2012–vote her out.

I believe Carolina Kennedy's life has been too shelter and influenced
by the deeds of her Father. She defintely is not qualified or
    worthy of the position....

If Sharpton endorses her that would be the final indication that she should never get appointed.

This is BS. So what if she raises money for the ballet and public schools and has a law degree. Give me an hour and I could come up with a list of 100 other rich women in Manhattan with the same resume.

I still say they hold a special election. It's not that I don't feel that she's qualified. She's well educated and truly seems to have the peoples' best interests at heart. But if she's appointed.. everyone will just say it's name recognition which could result in a lot of resentment.

Though I think if there was an election, she would be the one elected.

She may be smart and have money, but that describes a ton of people. If her name were simply Schlossberg, we wouldn't even be discussing her. There are plenty of other qualified candidates who have actually run for office and faced the voters. I am sick and tired of people who feel they deserve things just because they want them.

Why can't we stop with this continual Perils of Pauline routine.
Gov. Paterson will very likely chose Caroline Kennedy and the state of NY will applaud. Now if only the Gov. doesn't cave in to the pressure to do otherwise, he will be a hero . Blind or not. Sometimes we have to look within to find the truth.

Caroline Kennedy will be a poor choice for NY. I am pround that NY has one of few women Senators, but maintaining the number of women in the Senate is not a good enough reason to put an unqualified perosn in that seat. Additionally, I find it disgraceful that Caroline Kennedy thinks she is so special that she can just swoop into a postion to which others are more deserving and qualified. I hope Patterson makes a wise choice, although I have little confidence that he will.

Ironically, many of the same people who criticized Sarah Palin for lack of experience to be Vice President (and rightly so, I think), are ready to support a woman of even less experience for a key Senate seat. This is true craziness. We're seemingly all blinded by partisanship to the point where hypocrisy becomes irrelevant.

Just like a Kennedy, she wants her way and the more public she does it the more she feels entitled to it. Why did this woman support NOBAMA over Hill and now she wants Hills seat? Does that make sense? All of them, NOBAMA FIRST, are losers and traitors.

I like CK but I really don't like the idea of any person being appointed to the U.S. Senate that never recieved any vote in any election. She has tried to stay out of politics all her life then when the opportunity to become a U.S. Senator without having to actually earn it by running comes along she's suddenly interested. She wouldn't be on anyone's list if she didn't have the last name Kennedy and I think someone that has actually ran for office in some capacity should be selected before her. If she wants to be the junior senator form NY do it the correct way run in 2010.

  41. Felonious Monk

There is no "deserving" of a Senate seat. Get real people. They must work and demonstrate to the people of that particular state that they are the most qualified candidate for that position. To simply state that someone "deserves" a seat sets aside the very foundations of our democracy.
As far as qualifications go, Article One of the Constitution states "Senators must be at least 30 years old, have been a citizen for nine years, and live in the state they represent." So much for experience and qualifications.
Personally, I would like to see the start of yet another corrupt American dynasty that wallows in the muck and mire of greed and power.
Does anyone know her stance on prosecution of the current administration on war crimes charges?

Perfect for NY – another liberal empty suit with no ideas beyond tax increases and entitlements. That's why my family left the wreck year's ago...why not appoint someone who believes in entreprenurialism, individual choice and who actually knows how to make hard decisions and manage something – Guiliani or Bloomberg would blow her away. Amazing how the self-satisfied Kennedy clan believes they are entitled to power based on a track record that is more smoke and mirrors (Hollywood) than any 'real' accomplishments.

    Hello!
You know I have to believe that if Caroline Kennedy thinks that she would be a great Senator, she ought to know more than anybody. It's pretty obvious that she isn't doing it because she needs fame or fortune. This is a huge responsibility as well as sacrifice and I commend her and wish her luck.
This is by the way coming from a Republican. It's time for our nation to come together as a people, one nation, a team...everybody knows that it takes a team to win and not just one player.

Haven't the citizens of New York had enough of the Kennedy's? Where does it say that they are suppose to be great politicians anyway? I agree with the other comments saying that if she wants to be a Senator, start with the state races and work her way up! There has to be better qualified people to fill the position besides Caroline! She is just banking on her name to land her the position! Politics as usual!!
