Bush signs off on Clinton pay cut

Hillary Clinton's salary will drop to pre-2007 amount.
Hillary Clinton's salary will drop to pre-2007 amount.

WASHINGTON (CNN) – President Bush cleared the way Friday for Hillary Clinton to become secretary of state, signing a law that removes a potential constitutional barrier for the New York senator’s nomination by reducing her prospective pay as the nation’s top diplomat.

Congress voted in 2007 to raise the secretary of state’s salary by $4700. That move meant Clinton’s nomination was in conflict with Article I, section 6 of the Constitution, which prohibits members of Congress from raising the salary for a government job, then leaving the Capitol to fill the position themselves.

If she is confirmed, Clinton’s new salary will be $186,600 – less than the $191,300 now earned by current secretary of state Condoleezza Rice, but more than her current Senate salary of $169,300.

I wonder how the politicians can help contribute to the economy ?? there surely must be some way......
you all hear how top notch CEOs are takiing pay cuts and some of them even working for $1 a year....(though they must be having millions already -;, would not think any different for the politicians...)

If all our politicians pledges to take a 2% pay cut for 1 year and also if thier allowances were cut down a little for 1 year (god knows how many millions of $$$) then perhaps that might help a little.....

BLUESPIRIT416: Are you freaking kidding me? A racial issue? This is a Constitutional issue! And President-elect Obama can reinstate the pay difference by Executifve Order once he becomes President.

Read the Consitution before you start spouting off "racism".

I would like to know just one thing.

Exactly what does she do that warrants getting paid 186K dollars a year?
    Really. Like what exactly?
Sitting in meetings all day long is not a job requiring that kind of salary.

Its stupid stuff like this that adds to whats wrong with this country.

You know she pockets all that money, there are no expenses, everything she charges comes back to us the tax payers, it doesnt come from her salary.

Public servants shouldnt be payed that much, it clouds their judgment and turns them into fat pigs.

Do all of you people that make snide remarks about Hillary really believe that is going to change the way history is gearing toward? If so, you are up for a disappointment because the woman is who she is and will be your next S.O.S. Live with it & stop the hating!

Let's just hope she does a good job regardless of pay. Let's hope the whole new administration does a good job!

Seriously though folks... it's really time to stop the menial bickering. We have serious restructuring to do in both government and in the general American way of life.

    Remember the 'yes we can'

    So we shall.

Condi Rice was Bushes's favorite pet, of course. They spent long retreats together in private.

    Bluespirit416,

    You are an idiot!

"Hillary Clinton should get the same pay, for the same job as Condaleezza Rice was receiving for the position of Secretary of state.
Seems to me this is a racial issue of Black on White. "

This issue has absolutely nothing to do with race whatsoever. It has to do with the constitution which basically states you can't vote in a nice huge pay increase for a job you intend to go and take as a standing congressman (or congresswoman in this case). The pay cut allows her to now take the job. Without the pay cut, it would be unconstitutional for her to take this position. Bringing race into this just shows where your prejudgious lies. Next time try actually reading past the headline.

As for Hillary, she has millions, I seriously doubt she is worried about 4700 dollars a year.

Who wants to be a politician when we can make millions on Wall Street?

I can't fathom the reasoning why anyone wants to be involved in politics unless it’s simply power or the ability to earn millions after leaving office. Public service my head? Shucks!

Yeah, well what I am trying to find out is, are we still paying Bush? If so lets hurry and reduce his pay to zero dollars.

Our tax dollars at work...these Senators get a nice big salary over $150,000 a year while they rarely appear in the Senate chamber, get free travel, and basically get waited on hand and foot. They're all overpaid...Don't forget...they get to "vote" on their OWN salary each year...wouldn't you love to have that option at your job????

Who cares what she gets paid, you guys writing nasty comments isn't going to change her salary one bit. I just know she will do a better job than rice. I know one thing though you don't see us whites up in arms marching around complaining about the black women got paid more than the white woman is going to get paid. And you won't hear from the blacks about this either, go figure.

I think the whole Cabinet and Obama should work for $1. None of them needs the cash anyway.
Someone pointed out wisely that they were against Caroline Kennedy getting Hillary's seat because these dynasties (Bushes, Kennedys) have never been the average American families, so they really cannot relate to budgeting to pay the mortgage, deciding whether to get milk or gas, or losing a job entirely. Unless you have lived a real life, how can you serve real people?

Serves her right for trying to force Barack into giving her a position. I don't mind her being in the position but I hate it when someone think just because of who they are they deserve the job.

No one should make over $200k a year. This is what is wrong with our country. If you can't live off of this, you are living beyond your means.

CEOs making more than the highest ranks in government? What a bunch of crooks.

Hilary did not run for the Office of Sec of State. Therefore she should not have her pay cut. The law says that you could not have voted on an office you are running for. She is appointed.

But Bluespirit416 you are still and idiot.

The Clintons already have money. They'll be just fine. All Hillary or Bill has to do is write a book and watch the millions start rolling in. Maybe the GOP will take that $4700 and go on another shopping spree for Sarah Palin.
