Bush signs off on Clinton pay cut

Hillary Clinton's salary will drop to pre-2007 amount.
Hillary Clinton's salary will drop to pre-2007 amount.

WASHINGTON (CNN) – President Bush cleared the way Friday for Hillary Clinton to become secretary of state, signing a law that removes a potential constitutional barrier for the New York senator’s nomination by reducing her prospective pay as the nation’s top diplomat.

Congress voted in 2007 to raise the secretary of state’s salary by $4700. That move meant Clinton’s nomination was in conflict with Article I, section 6 of the Constitution, which prohibits members of Congress from raising the salary for a government job, then leaving the Capitol to fill the position themselves.

If she is confirmed, Clinton’s new salary will be $186,600 – less than the $191,300 now earned by current secretary of state Condoleezza Rice, but more than her current Senate salary of $169,300.

Congress is criticizing the wages of UAW workers. Those members are working for what they earn which is considerably less than the $169k pay that is paid for by taxpayer money. What is wrong with this picture?????

She's going to have a REAL tough time paying off that primary campaign debt, what with a 2.5% paycut. Never mind the auto industry, who's going to bail out Hillary?

    (answer: taxpayers, as always)

She was getting paid $186,000 to run for a president. So she was earning $186K a year and spending millions of money on a Presidential campaign. Great money management.

I think now those 3 am calls are coming from collectors. I am sure she's there to answer.

    @ Bob

To answer your question: No. Nobody believes for a second that Bill or Hillary or Obama for that matter would be in any way influenced by international donations to a charitable organization that helps fight AIDS and malaria and other diseases and effects of pverty in 3rd world countries. Only a GOPer would think that way.

I RECOMMEND CONGRESSWOMAN CLINTON DONATE HALF OF HER NEW SALAARY TO TAXPAYERS WHO ARE STRUGGLING TO PAY THEIR BILLS. WITH ALL OF HER ALLOWANCES SHE COULD STILL LIVE MUCH MORE LUXIOURY THAN US.

And as per usual this won't get posted, but how about checking into obama's qualifications to be the president. Since he can't produce a VALID CERTIFIED VAULT BIRTH CERTIFICATE.

I have to toss in my two cents here; most school superintendents make 146k per year for local small town schools in CT so if Clinton is willing to travel and attend diplomatic meetings and discuss national security with foreign dignataries and risk her neck traveling around the world much like Condi Rice did, I think she should be paid a decent salary. This is so much bias, she did not know she would be Secretary of state when she voted on the position salary,,,,so I say let her earn her keep and keep her busy, and pay her what the former Secretary of State made. If she earns her keep, then its worth the difference in dollars. Otherwise, If President elect, Mr. Obama should can her and hire a new person, that of course will never happen!

First she has to be confirmed, I am doing a writing campaign to congress not to vote for her to be sec. of state, she is a crook and has only one agenda, hers! not the country's.

She would rather be president, who knows her ambition in the long run, as well as Joe Biden's, Nancy Pelosi's and Michelle Obama's? It is all about lust for power and fame, not money. Joe The Pumber makes more money.

Dave you may not be raciest (then again you might be) but you are wrong. Hilary should hot have her pay cut because the law says she cannot have voted on an office she then runs for. But in this case she is being appointed. Barack Husain Obama is right to give her the job because she beats the pants off of Condi Flees and Lies, I mean Deleza Rice.

OF MONEY SHE EARNS. SHE IS SMART, SHE HAS EXPERIENCE
AND IS THE BEST PICK FOR HER JOB AS SECRETARY OF
STATE. ALL YOU LOSERS WHO DO NOTHING BUT COMPLAIN ABOUT HER, WHY DON'T YOU GET A LIFE..............

I agree with Sam. Public servants should not be paid that much money. Instead, pay teachers, nurses and police officers more money, they are the ones that actually deserve it.
