Hundreds of thousands of applicants want to work for President-elect Barack Obama.
Hundreds of thousands of applicants want to work for President-elect Barack Obama.

WASHINGTON (CNN) – Just weeks after opening shop, the Obama transition team has been flooded by what looks like an unprecedented wave of hundreds of thousands of resumes from people who want positions in the new president's administration.

"We've actually had more than 300,000 expressions of interest," Obama transition spokesman Nick Shapiro told CNN Radio.

That is roughly equivalent to the entire population of Iceland.

It dwarfs the 44,000 applicants reported by a Bush transition spokeswoman to the San Francisco Chronicle just days before George W. Bush was inaugurated in January 2001. The Clinton transition team in 1993 put its number of applicants near Inauguration Day at approximately 100,000. And the Obama boom has another month to build.

Meanwhile, it's creating a sort of business boom for job-search companies in and out of Washington.

You people that go around saying how great Obama is and how honest he is and he is everything perfect make me sick to my stomach. All you know is what he has told us and what we have read in the media. I hope the man does do a good job but he will not get the glory for it from me. It will be because true Christians will be praying for him to make the right decisions and not be a yes man to every Tom, Dick, or Harry that comes along.
In other words, only GOD will get the glory for great things HE has done in this great country of the USA!!!

FREEMAN   December 22nd, 2008 4:18 pm ET

Please screen these 300,000 with a basic IQ test, to get rid of the [R]epublicans. Let the Dumbf-kistanis go serve the rightwing governments in exile in the red states. In the United Staes, let the free get freer, the smart get smarter, but in the red states I'm afraid the dumb will only get dumber.

Maybe this is also because so many more people are unemployed after 8 years of Bush/Cheney!

In response to a stupid question from so-called Bill: ‘How many of these resumes are from the dead people or convicted felons who voted for him?’ Whoever you are, ‘Bill’, you are a sick hateful person. You should stay away from any discussions. Most likely, you are a convicted felon yourself. The entire world is celebrating Mr. Obama’s victory. I am so proud of this country and its people. No ‘Bill’ or any other dirty mouth will spoil our joy. One of the greatest men will be our President very soon!

Hope won!?????

I HOPE my kids will be able to pay off what is looking like a $1.5 trillion deficit per year.

I HOPE I won't have my taxes increased to spread the wealth.

I HOPE that Obama will reverse his stand on FISA which allows wiretapping without a warrant.

I HOPE Obama won't grow the government.

But, you're right. Hope won...because that's all we have now, to hope that the country will be better even when the Democrats and Republicans are doing a great job of messing it up.

CNN, I think you left a few digits off of the number...it should say 300,000,000 Americans are now working for Obama. As it is, all of the money earned for 4 months goes to the government. Now with talk of another $700-$800 Billion bailout, we'll all be working for Obama and the Government.

The Bush-Obama-McCain-Bailout (BOMB) has been dropped and we'll all feel the shock.

Ron in NC   December 22nd, 2008 2:43 pm ET

Of course, none of those applicants had better own a gun : one of the questions (#59) on the pre-employment questionnaire asked if the applicant or anyone in their family owned guns. I guess "diversity" doesn't include people who disagree with Obama on gun control.

It is a great thing when hundreds of thousands of people are willing to roll up their sleeves and work together to get this country back on track after a train wreck of an administration we've had for 8 painful years.

OLD TIMER the one great thing about this country is that no one will force you to work for a government or President you do not believe in. He also does belong in the White House because the majority voted for him over McCain and Palin so get over it. You do have a choice in the matter. If you are not happy living under these circumstances you are always FREE to leave the country. That is one of the rights you have in this country. IF YOU DO NOT LIKE IT, FEEL FREE TO LEAVE IT.

Hi, I'm Al Effn Franken   December 22nd, 2008 2:10 pm ET

Why the amazement? It's simply a number which is consistent with the expected growth in the size of government we can expect from Obama. The latter is the number which should be shocking the heck out of everyone! But NO curiosity on the part of the press...

Bushisuseless,

That is the typical whiner attitude that I, as a white male, am tired of. This is the mind warp trash that they teac in our schools today..."blame whitey for everything." White men built this country and made it what once was...a proud and strong nation. Now we are destroyed from within by the liberal culture with its gay pride parades, poltical correctness, and revisionist history.

Farrell, Houston, Tx   December 22nd, 2008 1:25 pm ET

Everybody Obama has hired has a Phd and higher degrees with known records of achievement, they aren't cronies. I would expect nothing less from Obama because he and Michelle worked to get their own. Thank God we have a president to be who recognizes education is the key to our future in the world.

I wish I had the talent and credentials to attain a position with the Obama administration. When Regan was elected I was a flight attendant. I was offered a job in the protocol office, I turned it down I'm a democrat. I was offered the position based on my looks and perky attitude because that was the only thing on display from LAX to DCA, I wonder if I could get by on good looks today. Boy how times have changed. You really have to be smart today to get a job in the White House, it seems that only 8 years ago, that wasn't the case, you just had to know the right people in Florida, how soon we forget. Mr. Obama will need all the talented people this country has, to get us out of this huge mess, but even if he is successful, the other team will come in again, and screw it up, as always.

I wouldn't ask for nor accept any pay since I'm retired on SSA & VA disability but would serve if I could. Sometimes, Americans should step up and volunteer if possible to do what we can. Unfortunately, bad economic times dictate everyone applying for anything!! I'd like President Obama to start a National Suggestion Program solicting suggestions from the public which could work like the old Air Force suggestion program with 10% of annual savings as cash awards for accepted suggestions. Americans are a wealth of ideas and information which should be tapped if possible!!!

The GOP ought to be down on there knees thanking the good lord for Barack Husain Obama. After running the field for the past 8 years doing your dead level best, having the policy that you have always wanted. Congress for 6 years and POUS for 8, you now have a president that you can pin everything that has gone wrong and will go wrong on. If you are right you will win back the office in 4 years, if you are wrong America with thrive. Either way, you win. I guess Operation Chaos is working out swimmingly. Thank goodness for the MaHaRushie. But just notice that each time you try to bring the Muslim Pres Elect down he grows stronger. I am even inspired – even though I am retired....my idea is to do something for the country and my locality – that is positive for everyone and to try to give others some inspriration who are down and out right now. There are lots of charities and people who need help and if I can I can volunteer for something locally – thats what I will do.

This tell you that mostly everybody is hoping President Elect Obama will be a person of change and hope. This past 8 years have been hell for most Americans.
