Cheney doesn’t get high marks in a new CNN/ORC poll.

WASHINGTON (CNN) – A new national poll suggests that one of out of five Americans think that Dick Cheney is the worst vice president in American history.

Twenty-three percent of those questioned in a CNN-Opinion Research Corporation survey released Tuesday say that Cheney is the country's worst vice president, when compared to his predecessors. Another 41 percent feel that Cheney is a poor vice president, with 34 percent rating him a good number two.

Only 1 percent of those polled say that Cheney is the best vice president in U.S. history.

"On the Sunday talk shows, Cheney took on the job of making the affirmative case for the Bush legacy," says CNN Polling Director Keating Holland. "But the messenger may be getting in the way of the message."

Cheney steps down as vice president on January 20. He will be succeeded by Vice President-elect Joe Biden.

He will leave office as one of the most powerful vice presidents in history. He played a crucial role in many of the Bush administration's crucial policies and was a major proponent of using and expanding executive powers.

"Cheney still has a lot of fans in the Republican party. Most Republicans nationwide said Cheney had been a good veep," Holland adds. "But six in ten independents and eight in tem Democrats gave Cheney a rating of 'poor' or 'worst ever.'"

In interviews this past weekend, the vice president said he was not troubled by polls that suggested he was unpopular and he was critical of those who spend too much time reading surveys.

The CNN/Opinion Research poll was conducted Friday through Sunday, with 1,013 adult Americans questioned by telephone. The survey's sampling error is plus or minus 3 percentage points.

SR   December 22nd, 2008 6:34 pm ET

I didn't see this poll. Obviously it was posted on FOX NEWS by seeing the low number. Americans with any sense would poll that number near or at 100%. HE'S A CROOK AND A BLACK EYE IN AMERICAN HISTORY!!!

Shannon   December 22nd, 2008 6:33 pm ET

that's all, the man is evil, pure evil!

Sena   December 22nd, 2008 6:31 pm ET

I honestly couldn't answer this poll since I don't know enough about the former vice presidents of our country or Cheney. I have a hard time believing that even 1 in 5 of those polled could name more than 3 former vice presidents. Do a poll of US history professors and report on that; those results would be interesting news. Asking the public this question in this political climate is a waste of time, because it seems like it was more of an opportunity for people to vent about their discontent with the current VP rather than consider his work as compared to others. This article should be titled, "Another popularity poll even though you can already guess the outcome."

Lola from the left coast   December 22nd, 2008 6:30 pm ET

This man qualifies for the Douch-Bag of the Century award, and it's only 2009 (almost.) Go away and stay away.

Jillian   December 22nd, 2008 6:28 pm ET

I really can't believe they would design questions in this way. I can't stand Cheney but I find it hard to say that he was worse than Nixon's VP who was placed in jail. Of course the fact that he looks evil and scary makes it hard to choose any of the other answer options.

Lindy   December 22nd, 2008 6:27 pm ET

I do not sense he was a good vice president. Very articulate, but not in touch with the world. For some bloggers to say they wished his ticker would stop, well that is about as low as you can get. Either those people are drunk at the keyboard are they need to seek help.

I did not vote either time for Bush. But I think he is a good person. I am not he only one...ask Vladimir Putin, he said the same thing.

Paul Reilly   December 22nd, 2008 6:26 pm ET

Dick Cheny is not only the worst VP ever but one of the worst people ever. He has no respect for freedom of speech, opinions that differ from his own, the Constitution or the basic principles that made this country great. Dictatorships throughout the world would welcome him.
How many young people have needlessly died because of his arrogance?

Cheney = The Penguin   December 22nd, 2008 6:24 pm ET

This survey merely proves that 4 out 5 Americans don't know what the hell they are talking about.

C. U. Indagulag   December 22nd, 2008 6:22 pm ET

Cheney and his fellow elites must be laughing all the way to the bank while cynically confident that...even now...no more than this scant percentage of Americans are yet able to recognize them for what they truly are.

Dilligaf   December 22nd, 2008 6:19 pm ET

Wait'll Biden's first year is over! He'll be lucky to get a 10% approval rating. Biden is a moron, just like the guy above him. The country will be run by Tweedledumb and Tweedledumber for the next 4 years. May God help us!

Hannibal Hamlin   December 22nd, 2008 6:19 pm ET

This poll would be impressive if only it showed that 90% of Americans cannot even name more than 4 of 46 Vice-Presidents. We deserve the leaders we elect.

Charlie   December 22nd, 2008 6:19 pm ET

Are you kidding? I am sure the VAST MAJORITY of americans believe he is the WORST ever.

KG   December 22nd, 2008 6:18 pm ET

So exactly how do any of you know if he was the worst vice president ever? Most of you have probably only seen maybe 7 or less.... I'm not saying he was any good, but this is just an idiotic poll. Par for the course for CNN.

Francis, Hawaii   December 22nd, 2008 6:17 pm ET

The rest think Bush is the worst!

Don   December 22nd, 2008 6:16 pm ET

I hope this country does not forget what Bush and Cheney have done to the country and the world. They both need to be tried for abuse of power and both need to be tried for war crimes. Both should spend the rest of their days in prison.

Bob in Arizona   December 22nd, 2008 6:15 pm ET

Only 23%? Lots of folks must have been sleeping through the past eight years.

Chris from STL   December 22nd, 2008 6:14 pm ET

What is surprising is that 35% of the population thought he was good or better! That's one in three in this country is an IDIOT .... Not sure which world these people live in.

Vicki5   December 22nd, 2008 6:11 pm ET

I think you mean 5 to 1 think he is worst. Sorry, I just don't buy that only 1 in 5 people feel that way. Nice try though.

mark   December 22nd, 2008 6:10 pm ET

What reason does anyone have to even vote for this? What did Cheney do to give anyone a reason to vote that way? Boy, are we "snowballed" by the media.

Timothy   December 22nd, 2008 6:09 pm ET

Cheney = worst VP ever
Evil Dick is putting it mildly!!!

Maria W   December 22nd, 2008 6:08 pm ET

So the vast minority of Americans feel he's the worst vice president and this is worthy of a headline on CNN....

strong   December 22nd, 2008 6:07 pm ET

I think the polls got their numbers reversed. 1 in 5 approve ! That is more believable. Polls are manipulated, use your common sense, people.

B   December 22nd, 2008 6:07 pm ET

Who cares where he ranks, he just admitted to war crimes in TV interviews last week. He seems to be proud of it too. Hope Obama lets the new AG prosecute.

I am shocked (Not)!   December 22nd, 2008 6:06 pm ET

Actually, 23% is closer to 1 in 4, not one in five. Cheney is an absolute disgrace as an American, and a disgrace as a person. Impeaching him would not be enough punishment for the crimes against our country he has instigated and committed. He is a conniving draft dodger who has all the bravado of someone who thinks they are a big man but really is overcompensating for how small a man he truly is, lacking any morals or ethics in in his desire to overcome his many, many deficiencies of character. Thankfully, 64% of us recognize him for what he is – trash.

Luke Brown, Charleston SC   December 22nd, 2008 6:06 pm ET

Wow, that's not nearly as many as I thought would view him as the worst V.P. in history! Most of those polled must not know who he is, what he's done, or what he's about. Check out the article in the Huffington Post about a witness against Cheney/Rove who died when his plane crashed last week. Suspicious to say the least.

CMG   December 22nd, 2008 5:37 pm ET

1 in 5 – I don't think so. Dick, you are nothing short of a disgrace. Can't wait for those grandchildren of yours to read about you in the history books. It could be interesting. The man who never admits a mistake whether it be while shooting a gun, using the "f" word, or sending young men and women to harms way and then referencing, "well, they volunteered." You disgust me and many others. Your legacy will be one of a kind.

I don't believe this poll. 1 in 5? The guy has done squat as Vice President except for helping lead this country to ruin and he makes no apologies for it. Cheney says he doesn't believe in poll numbers, but he did nothing but quote poll numbers whenever he mentioned Iraq, North Korea, or Iran. I really wish some journalist had the guts face Cheney and call him out for being the liar that he is. Shame on CNN for this sham of a poll and sham of a story that treats Cheney like he's America's darling.

Brian G, Sugar Land, TX   December 22nd, 2008 5:36 pm ET

Americans are blind and ignorant to the sins of Dick Cheney. This is sad, because he deserves to be tried as a war criminal for his blatant disregarad for the Geneva Convention to which the USA is held.

Bush should be tried as well.

That is because they still see nothing wrong with the way things went. As long as they see things that way the Dems will be in office. The GOP does not realize that there way of doing things netted the US zero. We are 10 years behind where we could have been if it was not for the W people. And I think you know what I mean.

its such an odd characterization of cheney (best or worst VP)...first off, we all know full well that hardcore R's would be proud to yell and scream for and support a chimpanzee if it was somehow thrown into the spotlight as their Party choice for some high profile position (example,Palin)...
but isnt it fair to say that its really NOT Bush's fault – all that went wrong??...simply because its become painfully clear that Bush has the brainpower of a raisin, which would prevent him from having ANY competent decision making power whatsoever...; Soooo, who else, would've been there for all those executive decisions??? (YES, very old tired point , i know)....
Cheney being called a "good or bad" VP is irrelevant...
he WAS basically .......the president, given the enormous lack of any other person available for the job for these past mindless 8 years..

But as usual, you talk to a republican about the subject and you're bound to get some other highly distorted, bent horribly out of shape, Rush Limbaugh "take" on things that really sounds demented and a million miles from the point...

republicans....what a sad bunch...

another thing....the one out of the five could very well be the media....think about it!

If one out of five Americans KNOW that Cheney is a rotten VP why haven't he been impeached???

The will of the people was overshadowed because the media IS the shadow who have protected Cheney for 8 years....CNN you just told on yourselves..

either you're in Cheney's pocket, or you fear him which is it?!?

is this the real reason military anthrax was sent to the media and certain politicians??? ARE YOU BEING BLACKMAILED LITERALLY?!!? Or was it the banks..oil...and pharmaceutical industries who sponsor the news...that told you to keep your mouths shut abut Cheney????the devil is in the details.

If the media was on Cheney the same way that they were on Clinton...true justice would have been served a long time ago.

This is country is no longer a democracy with justice for all....i don't know what it has become, but a just democracy it is NOT.

The media had dumbed down Americans looking at the shiny object's they project...while Cheney ran a muck...SHAME ON YOU CNN....FAUX...ABC...NBC...CBS...and the rest....you sold us all out.

John   December 22nd, 2008 5:15 pm ET

Calling him the worst VP in US history is a little difficult as we've had some real losers in that post. Who can even name most of them? But in terms of which VP has done the US the most damage, there's no contest.

anonymous   December 22nd, 2008 5:13 pm ET

I'd comment on this but I'm afraid I might be put on some watch list (rolling eyes....)

JK Ashburn, VA   December 22nd, 2008 5:12 pm ET

But, 4 out of 5 respondents couldn't name 3 others if their lives depended on it. So, what does that tell you about the value of their opinions?

ChicagoBob   December 22nd, 2008 5:12 pm ET

Ask those same people if they know who the speaker of the house is or what laws Cheney has written. Ask them if they know who their own senator is or congressman. Get them to answer those kind of general quetions first before you ask if you like Cheney. I bet most people dont even know why they dont like him. They are lemmings being told to do so by the hatred from the press. So I am not impressed with this kind of poll.

aunt Duff   December 22nd, 2008 5:11 pm ET

Cheney's memoirs should be titled "Just TRY to Prove I Was Behind Anything - You Couldn't Even FIND Me 99% of the Time."

About two weeks before Hurrican Katrina, I thought " How long has it been since I've seen or even heard about what Cheny is doing?". I called my local media, then national media, and everyone's response was "Hmmm. . . that's a good question. I can't even remember the last time we heard about him." Checking revealed not one mention of him had been in the news since late April.

I then called his office and they said "We do not disclose the Vice President's calendar, past or present."

He finally surfaced when he was sent to survey the damage left by Katrina, but, you could clearly tell he was thinking "Why in the hell am I having to waste my time on these no account poeple? This is a huge imposition, and I couldn't possibly care less." After that brief appearance, he disappeared again.

Cheny is a war monger, a cheat, a thief, and a liar. He should have been impeached a long time ago. Oh, wait, they couldn't do that because they couldn't find him. He spent his entire term in "an undisclosed location!"

J. P.   December 22nd, 2008 5:11 pm ET

Dick Cheney is not only the worst in terms of treatment of the citizens of these United States, but he is the worst in terms of his "looks down his nose" attitude towards the vast majority of our citizens. To say that the man is evil is simply a gross understatement. His attitude, his carriage, his manner of speaking as well as his policies toward all of mankind who do not meet his criteria personifies evil incarnate.

PL   December 22nd, 2008 5:10 pm ET

max   December 22nd, 2008 5:09 pm ET

I want to see the exact questions of the poll. I seriously doubt if even a 10th of Americans could name, say, 5 other vice presidents. Therefore, blathering on about how Cheney is the "worst ever" is patent nonsense.

It's really easy to brand somebody the "worst ever of all time" when he's the only vice president you even know of.

Cheney has been no saint, to be sure. The responses that say he has been a "poor vice president" at least make sense. In that case, he is being judged simply on whether or not you think has done a good job.

But "worst ever"??? Typical pollster, and headline-grabbing nonsense.

Yanz   December 22nd, 2008 5:08 pm ET

With all due respect to Mr. Cheney, the last eight years have been a nightmare even for true Republicans that stood for small government, less federal spending and civil liberties. History will probably choose to hyphenate the last eight years as Bush-Cheney era rightly so as Cheney proved the most dangerous VP ever in the history of the U.S. Mr. Cheney is not troubled by these polls–he remains true to himself. And that is where the crux of the problem lies.

Cheney is not only the worse VP ever, he is also the most corrupt, He is only interested in his self and clearly does not care about the ountry, only about how much money he can take from it, while he is in a position of power. The man should be not only inpeached but he should be ashamed to call himslef a US citizen, he should be deported and his citiizenship removed or stuck in one of his own badly run prisons – That would be justice !! what comes around goes around

Mark   December 22nd, 2008 5:00 pm ET

w is/will be/was the worst president...ever.

cheney is/will be/was the worst vice president..ever

together, the worst administration ever.

23% is closer to one of every four (4.348) than one of five. 64% had negative opinions of dc as a vp. CNN still trying to sugarcoat the worst administration ever?

Mari   December 22nd, 2008 4:59 pm ET

I am surprised its not.......... 1 in 2! Those polls were wrong and continue to be since they can not reach my kids generation with their cell phones!

THE ONE PERCENT THAT THINK CHENEY IS THE BEST.... ARE INSANE!

larry   December 22nd, 2008 4:57 pm ET

Dick Chaney is not only a dipicable human being (and I use the term "human being very loosely) and ABSOLUTE WORST VP this country has ever been burdened with...even worse than Nixon under Eisenhower.

Laura   December 22nd, 2008 4:57 pm ET

He's deplorable and should be tried for crimes against humanity.

Jerome   December 22nd, 2008 4:57 pm ET

23 % of the American public have it right !

kingtech   December 22nd, 2008 4:57 pm ET

If true, the remaining 4 out of 5 must be deaf, dumb, blind, ignorant, and delusional to varying degrees. This has been one of the most corrupt and amoral regimes in history with Cheney and Rove at the helm.

One thing I will praise Cheney for, is he is upfront about his perverse corruption. Afterall, how can you doubt the sincerity of a man who shoots his best friend in the face? Why would you be surprised when he treats anyone standing in his way even worse?

Don   December 22nd, 2008 4:56 pm ET

I'm frankly surprised it's that low. I admit I'm not really up on my Vice Presidents, but aside from Spiro Agnew and Andrew Johnson, I can't really think of any off hand that were just flat slime balls.

Larry L.Edgar   December 22nd, 2008 4:55 pm ET

YES, CHENEY IS THE WORST VICE PRESIDENT IN HISTORY AND ONE OF THE BIGGEST CROOKS. BUSH IS SIMPLY AN IDIOT.
I USED TO BE A REPUBLICAN VOTER, BUT THE LAST EIGHT YEARS
HAVE RESULTED IS THE MOST CORRUPT ADMINISTRATION OF MY TIME. THEY HAVE PUT THIS COUNTRY IN ECONOMIC RUIN AND THEIR TIES GO DEEP INTO OUR FINANCIAL SYSTEM. JUST REMEMBER THAT AFTER THEY LEAVE OFFICE, THEY WILL JUST WALK AWAY WITH THEIR MILLIONS AND INSURANCE WHILE LEAVING THE REST OF US IN RUIN.

Adele   December 22nd, 2008 4:54 pm ET

Why isn't Cheney in Jail?

payback   December 22nd, 2008 4:54 pm ET

cheney, will go down in history as the worst (shadow ) president. Not vice-president .

Not in denial   December 22nd, 2008 4:53 pm ET

Since when did the minority of opinion of a poll become the headline. The majority of those polled , 41 %said Cheney was a poor VP, 34% said he was a good VP. Only 23 percent said he was the Worst ever. We know what CNN thinks of Cheney by the headline. But the survery tells a different story. Most think he was a poor vp but more thought he was good that thought he was the worst ever. Biased reporting as usual.

Anonymous   December 22nd, 2008 4:53 pm ET

I have been a Republican for a long time. Mr. Cheney has been poor, at best, as our Veep. He retained too many ties to special interests, Halliburton, lobbyists and gave bad advice to Pres. Bush. Hawkish is an accepted stance for a person to take. Participating in hosing his constituency is not honorable and perhaps criminal. We will probably never know.

beachgirl   December 22nd, 2008 4:52 pm ET

Bush and Cheney are going down in history, THEY ARE GOING OUT AND DOWN AS THE WORST PRESIDENT AND VP IN THE HISTORY OF THE UNITED STATES!!!

This couple should be ashame of themselves, because the majority of Americans DON'T LIKE THEM, DID NOT APPROVE OF THEIR POLICY, ARE HAPPY TO SEE THEM GOOOOOOOOOOOOING!

BYE BYE LOOOOOOOOOOOSERS

johny   December 22nd, 2008 4:52 pm ET

Dick Cheney is the most nefarious politician in my lifetime. I was born in 1961. Do the math.

Jon G   December 22nd, 2008 4:51 pm ET

Dick Cheney is one of the most hateful, self-righteous, warmongering politicians ever to set foot in office. I'm amazed that he can wake up and look at himself in the mirror every morning. I hope that he spends the rest of his days keeled over in pain, guilt and suffering over all the young men he sent to their deaths, and the families who will never see them again.

Allen Glover   December 22nd, 2008 4:50 pm ET

Dick Chaney is an evil evil man. He is the number 1 axis of evil that has harmed this country. He is wicked and he has raped the people of this country.

He needs to be in jail for all the evil he has done. How the so-called christians could support such evil tells me all I need to know about religion. They preach but don't live it.

Charles   December 22nd, 2008 4:50 pm ET

Cheney is not only the worst vice president in history, he is among the top two most despicable persons to ever set foot into the city limits of Washington, D.C. He is cold, calculating, deceitful, aloof, deceptive, and worthy of Sen. Biden's comments and much more.

I disagree with Sen. Biden, however, on Bush. I think Bush is the sorriest thing to ever be called president. Not at all the victim of circumstances, he is Cheney's sidekick and puppet in many instances.

I will very happy to see Bush and Cheney depart Washington. I sincerely hope they also choose to depart the country and never be seen or heard from again.

Why di I feel this way: Iraq, the conomy, Hurricane Katrina, Valerie Plame, and all the other victims of Bush/Cheney. I wish Bush and Cheney would spend the rest of their lives in Gitmo or some other hell-hole.

Daniel   December 22nd, 2008 4:50 pm ET

He really is.

carol   December 22nd, 2008 4:50 pm ET

If even 1 in 5 think he's been the worst VP ever they must be smoking something that's all I can say.....of course to some he's been a great VP no doubt......they all must be smoking something as well.
The man is absolutely deplorable, he's arrogant, cunning and that constant sneer on his face is sickening....and even worse he is a bare faced liar.
I'm surprised he got anyone to vote for him at all!!!!

Ex-Republican   December 22nd, 2008 4:49 pm ET

Mike in Ca   December 22nd, 2008 4:48 pm ET

How about a poll about what people think of CNN constantly trying to make news and stirring thing up where there is nothing but of their making.

Al Gore   December 22nd, 2008 4:47 pm ET

Who cares? I didn't do anything about Global Warming until I could profit from it. Cheney was just doing a lot of the dirty work for President Bush.

Anyone that can honestly say he was an awful VP, please tell us all. what did he do that was so bad?

JFK   December 22nd, 2008 4:47 pm ET

Its that low? One thing is clear, there are 34% us that just idiots.

Ashley   December 22nd, 2008 4:46 pm ET

This is a non-story. If only one in five Americans think he is the worst v.p., then there are four others that don't. As a person with a degree from a top tier journalism school, I never cease to be amazed by the non-stories on CNN that are only published because they serve the liberal-leaning agendas of journalists who come up with these 'news' items.

bob   December 22nd, 2008 4:45 pm ET

he is the worst in my 50 year life time. how could we and why should we look up to someone that can say publicly the use "f" word to another person. i do not respect the man at all.

Ryan   December 22nd, 2008 4:44 pm ET

While he was a terrible V.P., how can you say he was the worst? Maybe 1 in 10,000 Americans know all the U.S. vice presidents.

That Other Jerry   December 22nd, 2008 4:44 pm ET

Just goes to show that one in five Americans have never used a history book for anything but a doorstop. The name Spiro Agnew ring any bells?

Definitely the worst in my lifetime.

Ken   December 22nd, 2008 4:43 pm ET

Of the other 4 in 5: (i) 1 in 5 were miffed at the question because they were certain God had ordained Rush Limbaugh as VP for the past 8 years; (ii) 1 in 5 have been preparing for the apocalypse for years now and like what Bush/Cheney have done with the economy; (iii) 1 in 5 couldn't be bothered with the question, as they were writing letters to Sarah Palin to thank her for bravely defending us against the Soviet Union all these years; and (iv) 1 in 5 continued to be in non-responsive states of rightwing disbelief, babbling someting about a birth certificate.

This is so much fun.........

Anna   December 22nd, 2008 4:42 pm ET

just 1 in 5, wow, but I thought he is worst not only as VP but human in history. Atleast I feel sorry for Bush, but Dick looks like a criminal, seriously.

Gary of El Centro, Ca   December 22nd, 2008 4:41 pm ET

And who do those 4 out of 5 think was worse? Maybe Agnew? But he resigned and got out of the way, unlike Cheney. Maybe Quayle? He was a lightweight for sure, but he never really did us harm, unlike Cheney. Maybe George H W Bush? This one is a possibility.....he had to be the one spearheading the Iran/Contra thing because Reagan was already losing some of his ability to stay on top of things. But I still have to give the nod to Cheney. The nickname Darth Vader doesn't do him justice. I think Darth at least had a soul before he went to the dark side.

Pam   December 22nd, 2008 4:40 pm ET

Only 1 out of 5???

Marc Yacht   December 22nd, 2008 4:40 pm ET

V.P. Cheney knew exactly what he did and continues to do. He may well be a criminal and has endangered this nation with his agenda. There must be accountability for his actions that cost this country so much in lives and resources and allowed corruption.

As for Pres. Bush – he is just as responsible and accountable for the actions of his administration. Whenever I feel any sympathy for him, I look at where this country is after 8 years of his leadership – it's not a pretty sight. Pres. Elect Obama will have a lot of cleaning up to do. MJY

Nathan,   December 22nd, 2008 4:40 pm ET

One in five thinking Cheney is the worst Vice President in history is not an unusually high number since he is the sitting Vice President. I think history will show that he is one of the worst public officials in the history of the nation. This man has no regard for the law or human decency. He dosen't care what anyone thinks including the man who was supposed to be his boss. He knew after he was hired by Bush to look for his VP that he had someone he could manipulate and he put himself into the position. He used the VP, and the Presidency for that matter to further an agenda that he had been harboring for decades. He didn't care that times had changed. Watching this criminal ride off into the sunset is only a plus in trying to get America back to what the rest of the world loved about us. Even tho America has always done things that weren't always above board we were always looked to for our sense of fairness, a decency that was never seen in other world powers and a conscious knowledge of right and wrong. Right didn't always win but it never let wrong go unabated. This man is a cancer on the idea of America and we'll be better when he is no longer in a position to spread his loathing of humanity around the world.

Cindy   December 22nd, 2008 4:40 pm ET

What about Spiro Agnew, Nixon's VP? He resigned before Nixon.

debbie   December 22nd, 2008 4:39 pm ET

I have always thought this man was purely evil. His rotten heart is evidence of his...well rotten heart.

Justin P   December 22nd, 2008 4:39 pm ET

The worst VP, is an Understatement, How about SATAN

obama-mama   December 22nd, 2008 4:38 pm ET

Should have been 5 in 5....He just looks hateful.

Laylah   December 22nd, 2008 4:38 pm ET

Who is the 1% that thinks Cheney is the best vice president in history? Beezelbub and Lucifer? Rasputin and Machiavelli?

THE OLD TIMER   December 22nd, 2008 4:37 pm ET

Cheney did all right,,, you people are on a witch hunt as usual...Cheney did not puill any sh– like Bill Clinton did !!!! lay off please you people must be hurting for news

Polar Bears Against Palen   December 22nd, 2008 4:37 pm ET

I'd like to know who the losers are that actually think Cheney was a decent vice-president. He's not even a decent human being. I'm so glad the right-wing scumbags got voted out of office this past November.

Terry B.   December 22nd, 2008 4:37 pm ET

The other 4 out of 5 needs to get on board with the 1 in 5.... Cheney has been a bigger train wreck than Bush. Ever wondered why they always kept in hiding in that "undisclosed location" all the time?

LIP   December 22nd, 2008 4:37 pm ET

Get real folks...it's not a popularity contest. Half the country is Democrats and they aren't going to like him no matter what he does.

Mike   December 22nd, 2008 4:36 pm ET

While I'm not a fan of Cheney, I have a hard time with people judging how his term as VP relates to historical terms. Of the people who were polled, how many people could name VP's that served prior to their lifetime? I don't like the way that this poll was conducted.

Perusing-Through   December 22nd, 2008 4:36 pm ET

The worst. Period.

American Rose   December 22nd, 2008 4:35 pm ET

That 35% (34 +1) probably still believe that there are WMD in Irag.

Ron   December 22nd, 2008 4:34 pm ET

Dick Cheney doesn't care what people think of him, he never has and never will. He only cares about the smal percentage of people who back him financially. May he rest in hell.

Jeff   December 22nd, 2008 4:34 pm ET

Add me to the poll. Since it is too late to impeach him, please start lining up the criminal and civil charges. And be sure that he can not destroy his records which by law are to archived. These will show his criminal intent and actions. Pursue him until his death, and posthumously. Rot in hell Cheney, or worse.

Mike   December 22nd, 2008 4:34 pm ET

Worst? Not sure.
Bad? As far as properly advising the President, you bet!
Self serving? Without a doubt!

The world view espoused by Bush-Cheyney has been woefully naive at best. Having the biggest guns in town does not an effective leader make. This sad era of cowboys-vs-indians diplomacy needs to be put in the grave once and for all so that a more reasoned and sensible foreign policy can sprout forth.

Not to mention that Cheyney ensured profits for his former company Haliburton, which he no doubt will return to their board of directors.

...and all this while hiding from public view and the media for 8 years.

Not a heroic legacy to leave behind, in fact he may be viewed as cowardly.

Beverly, NYC   December 22nd, 2008 4:33 pm ET

Who are these 34% percent who think Mr. VP F bomb was a good #2? Obviously they are Halliburton shareholders or Blackwater executives. When Cheney wasn't in the hospital for his heart he was in an undisclosed bunker leading Bush by the nose. Good is not a way to describe his 8 yrs in office!

Diversity is the key   December 22nd, 2008 4:33 pm ET

Only one in five? I thought it would more like 4 in 5.........

HouseDiva   December 22nd, 2008 4:33 pm ET

The one out of the five are either retarded, or one of Cheney's reptilian species.

Retired Army in San Antonio   December 22nd, 2008 4:33 pm ET

I can't say that he's the worst because......well......I just never cared to study Vice-Presidents to know who the bad ones were.

But Chaney is most definately one POOR example of a VP.

He was a crook before he was VP, he was a crook as a VP and he undoubtably will go to his grave........crookedly!

larry   December 22nd, 2008 4:32 pm ET

Only one in five?!?! I find that hard to believe.

Dr Stoner   December 22nd, 2008 4:31 pm ET

Wheres Osama, why did you let him get away. Oh, so GW could get a new air base on the Iranian border, was it worth the TRILLION DOLLARS and the lives. Who are you kidding, YOU AND YOUR CREW STINK. YOU RAN A WAR ON THE PREMISE THE TAIL WAGS THE DOG. PERIOD.

Only 20%? Just goes to show how bad real education is.

Sic Semper Tyrannis   December 22nd, 2008 4:30 pm ET

THE AMERICAN PEOPLE ARE BEING RAPED EVERYDAY!!! Indirectly, yes, but definantly. I hate this place, and the human race. We are all going to blow each other up over petty political grudges. Hmph, at least Bush worked things out with his dad.

Cheney was the evil mastermind behind this administration. He boldly announced that he's accountable to no one and will do what he pleases. This guy should definately be investigated for many conflicts of interest in the Iraq scandal and be tried for war crimes. I think GW was his puppet most of the time. Bad man.....very bad man.

It's scary that 4 out of 5 don't think he was the worst veep ever!

Mike   December 22nd, 2008 4:26 pm ET

Cheney is an evil man that promotes his narrow, conservative agenda with an iron fist regardless of the will of the people. He would just as soon have the President be the King of the country. I don't believe he is an honorable man, I think he's a shrewd politican that lost his way with drunken power many years ago.

bill   December 22nd, 2008 4:26 pm ET

I don't know where Dick Cheney ranks among other vice presidents, and he is wealthy, but he is one of the most mean spirited, cruel, dispicable politicians to grace the American scene in many years.

The man exudes hate, prejudice, and meaness.

Realist   December 22nd, 2008 4:26 pm ET

It's all about him, himself and his...He will be fine don't you worry, a millionare awaiting his long awaited time off from all of that hard work he has put in as vp...

Maybe I'm being to harsh on the guy who has demonstrated to the people based on the polls that he is the one and only VP who is concerned excessively or exclusively with himself. Seeking or concentrating on his own advantage, pleasure, or well-being without regard for others...

Have a good 1 – Dick

Wow..I didn't even have to 'think' about that...He is,and WAS.
He may think there is not a God to be accountable too...but whoo to him who has to account for the poverty he encouraged, the blood that was shed, the maimed, the homelessness and hunger his actions caused, the deciet in Science; ....the list goes on for miles....and he is just "one" man...HOW did America let him have this power or influence??? Will he ever sleep soundly?

Jim Jam   December 22nd, 2008 4:23 pm ET

With any luck, he will face charges for the VP he has been...

Dennis   December 22nd, 2008 4:23 pm ET

He certainly is THE WORST VP our country has ever experienced. The only ones that reaped any rewards from him was Halliburton and the oil companies.

I am so glad that Cheney will be exiting the Vice Presidential office in January. This man has wiped his feet on the Constitution of our country. I cannot imagine a more reckless, immoral human being. It will be nice to have Biden as Vice President- someone who RESPECTS the rights and laws of our country, instead of trying to find ways to break them and get rich in the process. Cheney is a disgrace.

Ms. B in California   December 22nd, 2008 4:22 pm ET

John Anthony   December 22nd, 2008 4:21 pm ET

Henri Jules   December 22nd, 2008 4:21 pm ET

In France they say that Cheney is "sans etat d'ame" he has no soul or no regret for everything. that's pretty bad. No wonder why Biden doesnt feel sorry for him, but as Biden I feel sorry for Bush. Don't you mean the worst "President"? He was the one making all the decisions. I hope to someday hear the amount of money this bastard made on the blood of our and our ally troops in Iraq. Oil and Halliburton is the real reason we went to war in Iraq. No bid contracts, securing the oil industry for the Saudi's are just the tip of the iceberg. I hope I live long enough for the real truth to come out. Of course, I don't think we'll ever see him prosecuted, or any of the administration's illegal shenanigans that have gone on for the past 8 years. For sure Rumsfeld, Cheney, and Gonzales should all be prosecuted and in jail......Bush was just the dumb puppet they propped up in the White House. What a bunch of corrupt, gangsters. Anymore, it's all about smooth talking and showmanship... kind of a popularity contest. Dick Cheney is not all about that for sure, but he addressed the tough issues with integrity, stayed true to his ideology and didn't sell out for his own gain. Thank you Vice President Cheney for your honest, hard work! I wish I had that same confidence in Joe Biden, but he has a chance to earn it.

Top Ten Most Hated Men/Women In America   December 22nd, 2008 4:20 pm ET

10. O J Simpson
9. Michael Vick
8. Scott Peterson
7. Robert Johnson (founder BET)
6. Chrysler, Ford & GM CEO's
5. Condi Rice (why not)
4. Henry Paulson
3. Carl Rove
2. Dick Cheney
1. George W. Bush

Dan, TX   December 22nd, 2008 4:18 pm ET

Cheney is the poster boy for the arrogance of the Bush administration. Bush did the best he could, he just reflected the poor choice of America in electing him, it's not his fault he was incompetent. It is our incompetence for electing him..

james   December 22nd, 2008 4:17 pm ET

34% say he was a good VP? Wow!

NEL E BELL   December 22nd, 2008 4:17 pm ET

quote, to get involved in a ground war for bagdad would be a endless campain. fast foward to 2003, dead enders and 25million new democrat's, oops members of democracy. Hummm, guess Haliburton didn't have Dick, on the payroll then.

Dennis   December 22nd, 2008 4:16 pm ET

Cheney is a greedy power monger. He's guilty of murder and war crimes. He and his monkey should be held accountable.

Chris Sloan   December 22nd, 2008 4:16 pm ET

One would expect your vice president to be a statesman and a diplomat. Cheyney is neither he's a thug.

Asheville   December 22nd, 2008 4:16 pm ET

No doubt in my mind; Cheney is no only the worst VP ever....he is just plain evil!

Red, Red WHINE!!   December 22nd, 2008 4:15 pm ET

Poll: One in five think Cheney is worst VP in U.S. history

...........and the other four KNOW he is!

Not Soon Enough   December 22nd, 2008 4:15 pm ET

Hopefully Cheney and Bush will get shoes thrown at them for the rest of their days. That's the least that should happen to them.

Conservative James, Phoenix, AZ   December 22nd, 2008 4:15 pm ET

Holy Cr*p!!!! My question is: who do the other 4 Americans think was WORSE????

Francis, IL   December 22nd, 2008 4:15 pm ET

There he is, the second most hated man in America.

Cricket   December 22nd, 2008 4:14 pm ET

Did anyone really need a poll to tell us that???

Donna from Colorado Springs   December 22nd, 2008 4:14 pm ET

He was the worst! Even though his title was vice-president, he was the person in charge, not Bush. Cheney actually has run this country for eight years.

Dan, IL   December 22nd, 2008 4:14 pm ET

Maybe poll some republicans now?

Wasilla Hillbilly   December 22nd, 2008 4:14 pm ET

Spiro T. Agnew had more honor than Chain-y. I throw my shoes at him.

Lisa   December 22nd, 2008 4:14 pm ET

I think Alexander Hamilton would disagree!

Claire, NY   December 22nd, 2008 4:13 pm ET

He was the most powerful VP in history because George W. Bush was the weakest president in history. He allowed Cheney to make his decisions and now he has to live with the consequences of being a presidential doormat.

Cheney and Rove ran the White House and everyone knows it. They ran this country in the ground and now we are ALL suffering for it. Yes, GW will get what he deserves. He will go down in history as being the WORST PRESIDENT EVER. How's that? And Cheney will be the WORST VICE PRESIDENT EVER. The Rethugs should forget about taking back the White House. We have an outhouse for them, though and we're going to throw that in their pathetic faces every chance we get.

The Rethugs got exactly what they wanted, the White House, The Senate and the House and they ran this country in the ground. They are the biggest phonies and they will never come back. Let's kick them all to the polictical curb.

CM   December 22nd, 2008 4:13 pm ET

Cheney is the most arrogant jerk that we've had for vice-president!

Kevin in Ohio   December 22nd, 2008 4:13 pm ET

Gee, am I surprised at a headline like this on CNN? Cheney was certainly competent. Not the best, but certainly nowjhere near the worst. At least he was engaged. Liberals, keep tearing down decent hardworking men who love this country. You're probably about to experience a taste of your own hateful, vitriolic medicine.

BeefyDaddy   December 22nd, 2008 4:12 pm ET

He's an unrepentant criminal who should be in jail.

Bush is stupid. Cheney is evil.

Everything in Moderation   December 22nd, 2008 4:11 pm ET

So. I took a poll here at work, and one in five of us are scared to death of the Obama presidency and the ruin it could bring to America.

raagos   December 22nd, 2008 4:11 pm ET

imaaaaaaan. I knew this for last 8yrs dick cheny its worst person ever. I am gonna be so happy to see this go away leave the office

sallydan   December 22nd, 2008 4:11 pm ET

It will take years to undo the harm that Cheney has caused this country.

Donald   December 22nd, 2008 4:10 pm ET

Me, and other Americans demand that this scum bag be shipped to Iraq after the inaguration to face the Iraqi people he has taken credit for "liberating". The way I see it he'll either be welcomed with open arms or hacked to death and thrown to the dogs. Frankly, I'm hoping for the latter!!

Ray O'Vac   December 22nd, 2008 4:10 pm ET

He reminds me of the cold blooded killer in No Country For Old Men. I'll bet he went to Iraq on a coin flip.

JimZ   December 22nd, 2008 4:09 pm ET

Just one in five? What planet have the other four been on?

anonymous in Big D   December 22nd, 2008 4:09 pm ET

Aw come on – ya gotta like the guy! He's great!

Deanna, MS   December 22nd, 2008 4:08 pm ET

Perfect, it's goes along with the worst president in history. They are two peas in a pod.

If I were Bush I would just tell everyone he was a puppet and none of the horrible acts were his idea, but Cheney's. Let Cheney take the bullet, why should George have to be the WORST PRESIDENT IN US HISTORY. His VP made all of his decisions.

Ray O'Vac   December 22nd, 2008 4:08 pm ET

Goodbye, Vlad the Impaler. And take your wife who writes pornographic books with you.

Robin   December 22nd, 2008 4:08 pm ET

I'm a Rebublican, and I agree with this statement.

Adam   December 22nd, 2008 4:07 pm ET
