Obama: Put the journalists' beer on my tab

Obama offered to pick up the tab for a group of journalists -- an offer few would make.
Obama offered to pick up the tab for a group of journalists - an offer few would make.

HONOLULU (CNN) – Many Republicans already believe President-elect Barack Obama has gotten a free ride from the national media, so they may not be happy to learn the incoming Commander-in-Chief offered to buy a round of drinks for reporters covering his working vacation on the sands of Hawaii's beaches and the greens of its lush golf courses.

Halfway through a round of golf on Sunday afternoon, Obama rolled up to the snack bar in his golf cart to find a small pool of reporters waiting to get more pictures of him enjoying a leisurely day. No doubt realizing these might not be the best images at a time of recession, Obama suggested the reporters seek some other recreation to pass the time - rather than snapping so many pics.

"Obama then told us we should be in the clubhouse at the bar having some beers," according to a pool report by Jamie Farnsworth of CBS News. "Someone asked if he would pick up the tab and he agreed before driving off to the next hole. Pool is still holding without beer.

In a separate pool report for print journalists, Jeff Zeleny of The New York Times added helpfully: "He chatted for a moment, telling the pool to have a beer and put it on his tab. No one took him up on the offer."

Aha! So the key here is reporters covering the President-elect are having more fun here in Hawaii than we had in Crawford, Texas - and 85 degrees in the middle of the afternoon here is way better than the cold winds blowing through Chicago too. But none of the journalists were corrupted by free beer - we pay our own tabs.

And just for the record: your faithful correspondent, while enjoying the wonders of Waikiki beach, never drinks - at least not on the job.

This story is all about Ed Henry trying to keep the RNC happy when in fact they will never admit to being happy. They're too busy working the refs.

Why don't you all stop hating. The man is on vacation. No one said anything when Bush took all of he boring vacations. Secondly, he worked hard for all of his accomplishments why can't he enjoy the fruits of his labor with his family? It's not his fault that this country is in economic despair. Furthermore he is not yet the President. Throw some of that criticism in Bush's direction. He has a few more days to make amends (yeah right).

By the way as some poters have noted, he is not yet the President – Bush is and I am sure the is not worrying about the economy.

If you knee-jerk Obama haters want to spend a few minutes on facts instead of your usual Hannitized truthiness, you will learn that George W. Bush spent more time relaxing and taking vacations than any President in history. While he was wrecking the economy and destroying our credibility around the world, it never bothered you that he was playing golf, did it? He's the President and he is doing diddly-squat to help us. It's not Obama's job until January 20, 2009. He deserves a break with family and friends before he has to start cleaning up the mess left by all the people who voted for Bush and his billionaire pals.

Why is this an issue? The man just want through a tough election and is about to take the reins of the country in distress. I for one want my president refreshed and ready to go.

Oh and all you republicans whining about the election. Remember how stupid the democrats sounded the past 10 years.

  9. Never happy...

Why can't you ever be happy

Where do you want him to go for vacation?
Go to Alaska and hunt with Sarah? Oh no! He's killing animals, so cold-hearted...
Go to Europe and visit different places? Oh no! He's going to learn all sorts of weird language like french and german that we, in the US, don't consider patriotic because it's not english...
Continue to work and announce things from his transition plan? Why can't the guy gives us a break, it's the holidays for god sake...
Hawaii to play golf? Oh no! Golf's for rich, he's so out of touch...

Go back where he came from during the holidays, what about that?
Is it is fault if he's more "rich" than you and I? No, so he's not gonna stop enjoying well deserved vacation just to be sure no one's gonna complain.

I don't understand why this is news? The man is on vacation!!! I would have a beer with him.
People should really wait until he takes office, we only have one President at a time. Instead of obsessing with what President Elect Obama is doing, the press should be keeping an eye on President Bush and what he is not doing.

    Merry Christmas!!

With all the economic woes this country is facing, some idiot had to post the $3500/DAY resort the NOBAMAs are renting in Hawaii over the Christmas holidays. Makes me absolutely want to puke. I'm having trouble with just keeping myself afloat and he spends grand!! Showy ____.

Wake up people! The man is on vacation. He can do whatever he wants. Besides, golf is not a rich mans game anymore.

Why are you criticizing him for not working BEFORE his first day on the job? HELLO?!

  16. common sense

Obama's main purpose of going to Hawaii for vacation is to see his family (his sister and brother-in law), not really for the golfing.

The golfing and the beaches is really just a side benefit. Clearly, He goes to take some time out of his busy schedule to be with family.

I Rather have Obama take vacation before he become president than during the presidency. And for you conservatives, you forget Mr. Bush....was out on Vacation for most of 2001until we got hit with 911...then he began to work. So leave the man alone......VACATION is vacation.

Just remember not to talk about what you thnk someone might do look at what they are currently doing. Mr. Obama deserves this vacation as he has earned it, many critics and sore losers need to remember that he is not the current sitting president. The CURRENT president has this country in the MESS its in now by playing party favorites instead of representing the AMERICAN people. Its is time to stop the double standard and move forward. The citizens of this country have proven that they can be ignorant, intolerant and partisan. We have yet to prove that above anything else, WE ARE AMERICANS, not DEMS, not REPUBS. We cant possibly stabilize Iraq or any other country because we cant stabilize America. Why do people feel we can stop age old battles in Iraq when we cant stop the age old battles here at home?

  19. OH WOW

so the guy offered to buy a drink...what is so wrong about that? Also, I dont think he said "hey go get drunk on me and then go drive around". Come on people...that is just crazy talk to suggest that...and by the way YOUR guy for the past 8 years...what do you think he's been doing? How did our country get the way it is now? Hmmmm it's easy to knock someone for not immediately fixing things before he is even sworn into office isn't it? oh well i guess we'll see how this president does. He can't do any worse of a job lol...but cheer up the country will survive... you will live...and everything will be better hahahah
