Obama will be the first president since Lincoln's first term to be sworn in using the Lincoln Bible.
Obama will be the first president since Lincoln's first term to be sworn in using the Lincoln Bible.

The Obama transition team announced Tuesday morning that the president-elect would be sworn in with the Lincoln Bible, used by 16th president when taking the oath of office in 1861 (Full statement released Tuesday follows):

"Washington, D.C. – On January 20th, President-elect Barack Obama will take the oath of office using the same Bible upon which President Lincoln was sworn in at his first inauguration. The Bible is currently part of the collections of the Library of Congress. Though there is no constitutional requirement for the use of a Bible during the swearing-in, Presidents have traditionally used Bibles for the ceremony, choosing a volume with personal or historical significance. President-elect Obama will be the first President sworn in using the Lincoln Bible since its initial use in 1861.

'President-elect Obama is deeply honored that the Library of Congress has made the Lincoln Bible available for use during his swearing-in,' said Presidential Inaugural Committee Executive Director Emmett Beliveau. 'The President-elect is committed to holding an Inauguration that celebrates America's unity, and the use of this historic Bible will provide a powerful connection to our common past and common heritage.' "

"The Lincoln Bible will be available for a press viewing between 11:00 AM and Noon today in the Members' Room on the first floor of the Library of Congress' Thomas Jefferson Building at 10 First St. S.E. in Washington, D.C. Video and still cameras are permitted. Media should allow 10-15 minutes to clear security at the First Street entrance to the Jefferson Building. Clark Evans, who heads the Reference Services Section of the Rare Book and Special Collections Division of the Library of Congress, will also be available at that time to answer questions about the Lincoln Bible and the Library. High-resolution photographs of the Bible are also available upon request. RSVP is not required. Please contact the PIC Communications Office with questions.

The Bible was originally purchased by William Thomas Carroll, Clerk of the Supreme Court, for use during Lincoln's swearing-in ceremony on March 4, 1861. The Lincoln family Bible, which is also in the Library of Congress's collection, was unavailable for the ceremony because it was packed away with the First Family's belongings, still en route from Springfield, IL, to their new home at the White House.

The Bible itself is bound in burgundy velvet with a gold-washed white metal rim around the three outside edges of both covers. All its edges are heavily gilded. In the center of the top cover is a shield of gold wash over white metal with the words 'Holy Bible' chased into it. The book is 15 cm long, 10 cm wide, and 4.5 cm deep when closed. The 1,280-page Bible was published in 1853 by the Oxford University Press.

Annotated in the back of the volume, along with the Seal of the Supreme Court, is the following: 'I, William Thomas Carroll, clerk of the said court do hereby certify that the preceding copy of the Holy Bible is that upon which the Honble. R. B. Taney, Chief Justice of the said Court, administered to His Excellency, Abraham Lincoln, the oath of office as President of the United States …'

The Lincoln Inaugural Bible will be on display at the Library of Congress February 12th to May 9th, 2009, as part of an exhibition titled "With Malice Toward None: The Abraham Lincoln Bicentennial Exhibition." The exhibit will then travel to five other American cities. The Library is planning several other events and programming in commemoration of the bicentennial of the birth of the nation's 16th president, who was born on February 12th, 1809.

On March 4, 2009, the 147th anniversary of Lincoln's first inauguration, the Library of Congress will also be convening an all-day symposium with several renowned Lincoln scholars."

"Talk/talk/talk"? What do you want from him? He hasn't taken office yet! And even when a president is in office, the tools are a voice and a pen. Did you think there were knobs and levers on the president's desk?

Just another shrewd political photo op.
A presidents only constitutional job is to keep the country safe.
Its the congress that does all the spending etc. Congress writes the bills and its a presidents job to either sign them or not.
Bush was complainging about the Fannie Freddy situation for years but the dems in congress wouldn't do any thing about it.
you should check the historical FACTS before blaming Bush for everything.
Oh, gol, its snowing again. Must be Bushes fault.

I have said it before and I will say it again, until we as United States citizens unite and support our president AND one another, we will never move forward. The negative comments about our president elect are horrible. when will you guys understand that it takes more than one person to make a world work, and with us not working together, we are working apart–shame on us–look what we have allowed ourselves to get into.

Glen in Laurel, Maryland   December 23rd, 2008 11:29 am ET

Like every president-elect he's been asked which past president he admires and would like to emulate. In his case it's Lincoln. And since he admires Lincoln he thinks it's fun to note, as anyone would, that there are parallels in his Illinois legislative career. There's nothing arrogant about that. I admire Mark Twain and if I had been born in the same town and spent time working on a riverboat I'd be tickled about the similarity and say so. Would people then say, "oooh, he thinks he's a beloved American icon! And he hasn't even published a short story, much less a novel! How deluded! How arrogant!"? Only if they were desperate for an excuse to knock me down.

Hey, I am a Puerto Rican from Jersey born and raised with Real true African Americans.

Don't get me wrong, I am happy he chose Abe's Bible, and I do find it historical. But he is not "African American" . or atleast "African American" as we know it, or people who grew up with me knew it. This man has no ounce of slavery in his blood, does not know what it is to be discriminated.

His Grandmother was a Bank VP.. How hard did he have it in life. Yes his mom was a hippie, who traveled a lot, married a lot, and left him with his grandmother, I acknowledge that, this must have been hard on him, But compared to the African Americans I grew up with and still live with, He is not an African American, he African/White.

I cannot believe some of the comments aimed towards Obama. From the jabs thrown at him for offering a beer to journalists in the sweltering heat (others would have called him mean for not offering a beverage) to the bible being used for his inauguration. Some of the comments are downright rude. It never ceases to amaze me the ignorance of some people. No wonder America is so despised around the world with this type of arrogance shown by some posters here. GIve the guy a break will ya, he is about to embark on the most difficult job in the world and needs everyone's support, not criticism.

Honestly, nobody does. I don't have the pain of the Irish potato famine or "No Irish Need Apply" running in mine. This is what our country really needs to learn. Until we learn to simply refer to ourselves as "American" with no added hyphenated DIVISIVE terminology to throw up barriers, then we haven't moved on and there is no unity in our hearts. Pretty simple.

I couldn't agree with you more. I think it is wonderful and shows the thought he puts into things. I think he will make a wonderful president.
And for those who feel he has not suffered discrimination are WRONG. He has in many ways and at different times in his life. People made a very big deal of the fact he was African-American throughout the campaign. He didn't. Where do you think the slaves came from? Slaves were bought here from Africa.

Please reread the paragraph. It is a historical reference to Lincoln, NOT Obama. It explains why Lincoln didn't have his family bible with him at the time he was sworn in 1861, and as a result why one was purchased for him to use in the ceremony. In the midst of moving, packing, and relocating, the Lincoln's personal belongings (including their family bible) were still in route from Springfield to Washington. For obvious historical purposes, the LOC now has both bibles, and Obama will use the very bible that Lincoln used when he took the oath.

Obama admires Lincoln so no surprise he would use Lincoln's bible. Everytime this man has an original idea, he is called arrogant. There is nothing arrogant about not always following tradition. Obama has had the audacity to do things different and he has paid off for him. He will make a great leader because he is willing to think outside the box and these are definitely outside of the box times. One thing people will be able to say about Obama is he was unlike any other President, oh besides the fact that he was the first black president. He is sooo inspirational, I love myself some Obama!

Jason   December 23rd, 2008 10:20 am ET

A powerful statement, but one based on bad history. With this we further our mythic biography of Lincoln. Let us also not forget Lincoln the man who suspended habeus corpus for the duration of the war and the man who oversaw a military policy that left the South in ruins (often needlessly so, can anyone say William Tecumseh Sherman?). Let us also not forget the Union had slave states in it and that Lincoln's proclaimation ONLY freed the Southern slaves, and for suspect reasons (moral backing for the Union cause and a slave rebellion in the South would speed the Union war effort, and lead to the death of countless slaves). Let us also not forget taght Lincoln's views toward blacks was not one of equality (read the Lincoln-Douglas debates). He was very much a part of a paternalistic view toward blacks, they were lesser but needed to be protected. Also world opinion was already moving toward the abolition of slavery and every other country/empire in the Western World succeded in ending slavery without a war. Forget what you read in your 1st grade textbook and look into the real history of Abe Lincoln, an imperfect and flawed man who, often despite himself, added impetus to the already powerful call to abolish slavery.

I personally did not want Obama to win, But I think this is tremendous, and really historical. It has is of great significance. The one who abolished slavery lending his Bible to the First African/White President.

Cool

Dave, Illinois   December 23rd, 2008 9:39 am ET

How arrogant! I have heard to many in the media, and Obama himself, comparing him to Licoln. He has done nothing yet but run an effective campaign and raise money. Lets see some real nose to the grindstone work and less hype!

obama   December 23rd, 2008 9:35 am ET

WOOOW THATS GOOD NEWS. AM GETTING INTERSTING EVERYDAY HOW ABT HANDLING EVERYTHING

bj, Texas   December 23rd, 2008 9:34 am ET

The cover might be the Lincoln Bible but the inside will be the Koran.

anonymous in Big D   December 23rd, 2008 9:30 am ET

Oh brother!

Cammi317   December 23rd, 2008 9:29 am ET

I like it. I wonder why no former Presidents chose the Bible of the President who freed the slaves and united this country once and for all.

D   December 23rd, 2008 9:29 am ET

How unbelievable is that! I am so pleased just to witness such a historic event! All these years past and the deep wound that is known as Americas Original sin is finally starting to heal.

UNITED we stand, seperate we fall….. lets all be purple!

naqib   December 23rd, 2008 9:29 am ET

Maybe while under oath he can explain why it takes three weeks to release papers saying you and your people have nothing to say?

Great way to start… the latest poll says only 43% of America believe you… Wow… lost 20% of those who voted for you and you're not in office yet… LMAO

Baze   December 23rd, 2008 9:27 am ET

I love it

NEL E BELL   December 23rd, 2008 9:26 am ET

ALL THIS SYBOLIC PUBLIC RELATIONS, IS GETTING PRETTY LAME. I HAVE BUT ONE QUESTION FOR OBAMA AND THE DEMOCRATIC CONGRESS IS THIS. WHERE'S THE MONEY, WHERE'S THE MONEY.ENOUGH WITH THE WHAT BRILLANCE AND BALANCE IN THE CABINET CHOICES. WHAT ANGERS ME IS I'M A DEMOCRAT THAT WORKS HARD AND PAYS MY TAXES FOR GOOD GOVERNMENT NOT SYMBOLIC NONSENCE…

patNY   December 23rd, 2008 9:23 am ET

The symbolism of the First African American President being sworn in with the bible used by the President who freed the slaves [and ironically the first Republican president], is too important for anyone to miss, AND…hopefully, it will deter people from making the expected nasty comments, like, gee, surprised he's not using his own personal Quran. But, knowing how some people are, I'm sure there will be those nasty ignorant posts.

What no Koran??!??!   December 23rd, 2008 9:20 am ET

I guess he really isn't a Muslim.

Merry Christmas, and if you're a non-believer, then enjoy the day off!

Marc in Virginia   December 23rd, 2008 9:19 am ET

The arrogance of this man. He has the audacity to use the Lincoln bible when he has done nothing. I suppose he will begin carving his image out in Mt. Rushmore by the inauguration.

S.B. Stein E.B. NJ   December 23rd, 2008 9:17 am ET

This shoots down the idea that people believe he was going to be sworn in on a Koran. Does it really matter what Obama was sworn in on before and in January? As long as he understands that he is going to be handed one of the most powerful positions in the world and that he needs to follow the rules, I don't care what book he is sworn in on.

James Magabo   December 23rd, 2008 9:15 am ET

President – Elect Barack Obama's decision to be sworn using the same Bible as Abraham Lincoln used is a great symbolic gesture of the respect he pays to Abraham Lincoln. I pray thaty Obama will unite the United States of America as Lincoln did. Had Lincoln failed, the present United States of America would be defferent.

Long Live President Barack Obama.

Eric   December 23rd, 2008 9:14 am ET

Let's guess how many repugs will write he will be sworn in, his hand on the Koran.

DC FOR OBAMA   December 23rd, 2008 9:14 am ET

I thought he was a MUSLIM ?LOL

PJP in OK   December 23rd, 2008 9:08 am ET

Another good move!!!!

Accountant Guy   December 23rd, 2008 9:06 am ET

Wow, that is amazing. It is great that the Library of Congress has agreed to let it be used for the inauguration!!

Keep an Eye on Obama   December 23rd, 2008 9:01 am ET

Honest Abe will be rolling in his grave. "I, Barack Hussein Obama…"

Lori   December 23rd, 2008 9:00 am ET

Powerful stuff! I cannot wait to see Obama's inauguration! The world is so happy and America has redeemed itself in the eyes of the world.

Good luck President-elect Obama, we are all rooting for you!

Kimberly in Texas   December 23rd, 2008 8:53 am ET

January 20th can not come soon enough!

S Callahan   December 23rd, 2008 8:52 am ET

This is remarkable….for most, myself included..the Bible is the most sacared of Books…if it could talk , this Bible would have many stories to tell regarding Lincoln ….I would love to read the side notes in it…..Lincoln was a divine part of history , a part that man did not recognize in his time…he not only represents maturation for society but healing….

Brian from Fort Mill, SC   December 23rd, 2008 8:52 am ET

I wonder just how many Obama haters are now going to say that Abraham Lincoln was a Muslim??

Art   December 23rd, 2008 8:51 am ET

I would have expected nothing less.

BOJ Jr From Raleigh   December 23rd, 2008 8:49 am ET

God Bless you Mr.President-Elect and may God's speed be with you always.

Connecticut For Lieberman Party   December 23rd, 2008 8:48 am ET

Is the Lincoln Bible a Koran? I hear from my conservative friends that Obama is going to swear in on a Koran because he's a secret Muslim because his middle name is Hussein, like an arab or something.

reader   December 23rd, 2008 8:46 am ET

Never Mind responding to the above.

reader   December 23rd, 2008 8:44 am ET

"The Bible was originally purchased by William Thomas Carroll, Clerk of the Supreme Court, for use during Lincoln's swearing-in ceremony on March 4, 1861. ""The Lincoln family Bible, which is also in the Library of Congress's collection, was unavailable for the ceremony because it was packed away with the First Family's belongings, still en route from Springfield, IL, to their new home at the White House." ""

Second sentence of the above makes no sense. Why is the Lincoln family Bible packed away with the First Families belongings? I thought it was in the Library of Congress?????

Pay ATTENTION!

indy   December 23rd, 2008 8:44 am ET

President Barack Hussein Obama the 44th POTUS, from the emancipation proclamation freeing the slaves to this historic event. Using Abe Lincoln's Bible shows how far we have come as a country.

WELCOME TO THE OBAMA SHOW!!!!!!!!!!!!   December 23rd, 2008 8:43 am ET

GOD HELP US!!!!!!!!!!!!

Stephen, Missouri   December 23rd, 2008 8:43 am ET

I have no doubt that his will be a great Precidency. To my collegues on the left, we trusted Obama to be President with the help of many other groups of Americans, let him govern in the best way possible. I fulle respect PE judgenent and I know he will be wonderful. So let's join in and make this country great again.

We can judge PE years from now and see where we stand. I know PE is acutely aware of history and he is making his a historical precidency. If he is another Lincoln, we will overcome all the problems we have.

A Sousley   December 23rd, 2008 8:41 am ET

Oh my….guess that will hurt some of the people who keep yelling he is a Muslim, because he will not be using a Koran to be sworn in on. Now what will they do.

That is neat. I am glad to see him do it this way.

Tom D   December 23rd, 2008 8:40 am ET

Please make sure this goes in an e-mail that you circulate to all your friends. The Repubs will circulate the old Koran e-mail again…we know that.

Moroni   December 23rd, 2008 8:40 am ET

That's an interesting tradition, but if it were me I'd like to be sworn in on a stainless steel plate with the engraving of the Bill of Rights. It feels more symbolic to me for that kind of event. :)

UCHE ENYIOKO,   December 23rd, 2008 8:37 am ET

OBAMA IS A MAN OF HISTORY, HE FOLLOWS HISTORY AND HISTORY WILL FOLLOW HIM AS REGARDS TO HIS ACTIONS TO AFRICANS

Ohio lady knows   December 23rd, 2008 8:35 am ET

But the fear mongers were betting that Obama would take the oath of office on a Qu'ran! I'm starting to think those guys are a bunch of liars! Is he still hanging around with terrorists? Surely something they said is true!

carlo   December 23rd, 2008 8:35 am ET

What? No Koran? I tell you, people are so ridiculous. The man is a Christian. He's just not a Fundamentalist or an Evangelical. You know, Christianity was a religion even before America was established as a nation. Heaven will not be filled with Jerry Faldwells.

carol   December 23rd, 2008 8:31 am ET

Well that is gratifying to hear that PE Obama is using the Lincoln Bible
on inauguration day…..maybe, just maybe people will get over this ridiculous nonsense that he is a Muslim once and for all!!!

Kevin in Ohio   December 23rd, 2008 8:30 am ET

I'm very surprised that the Politically Correct people aren't upset about this as well. Thank you, Mr. Obama, for at least making an effort to bring us back to our Judeo-Christian roots and values. I hope it doesn't upset too many people in your constituencies.

Larry from TN   December 23rd, 2008 8:18 am ET

It will probably burn his hand when he touches it.

John in Ohio   December 23rd, 2008 8:17 am ET

I imagine Republicans will be surprised to learn "Lincoln Bible" isn't a slang term for a Quran.

Susan   December 23rd, 2008 8:15 am ET

That's incredible – monumental, symbolic and historic. Now watch the haters come out to play….

Once you vote Black   December 23rd, 2008 8:13 am ET

Some Muslim. Well it wont work. There is no way he is going to fool the good people of WV, KY, TN who have more toes then teeth. We are too advance thinkers for that.

OWL   December 23rd, 2008 8:09 am ET

So appropriate in so many ways.

williefloyd   December 23rd, 2008 8:09 am ET

Absolutely a wonderful decision!

Outrageous----   December 23rd, 2008 7:59 am ET

How can a President who would deny human rights to a minority (ie: gay marriage) take an oath using the Lincoln bible?

Ignorance is Bliss   December 23rd, 2008 7:53 am ET

Not using the Koran, huh?

richard   December 23rd, 2008 7:49 am ET

I LOVE IT

Jeff in NC   December 23rd, 2008 7:44 am ET

You are absolutely correct Newsflash. Candidates are going to have to earn the votes of the American people.

Charles L. Shaw, Liverpool, NY   December 23rd, 2008 7:44 am ET

Good Luck My President, the time is now, may God be with you.
Always remember it is the working American that needs a President now more than ever.

Heh   December 23rd, 2008 7:40 am ET

Guess that'll put an end to the rumors that he'd be sworn in on the Quran.

News flash   December 23rd, 2008 7:40 am ET

I think this is great! Regardless of what some people think of the President-Elect, they will have to agree that he will restore the statue of the OFFICE of POTUS to the honor the founding fathers meant for it to be. From now own, the American people will be very careful of whom they elect POTUS. No matter how much money you can rake in, or how much negative advertising you do, the future Presidents will have to be a candidate of substance. The American People have made this criteria a must, not ideaology.

Jan in NC   December 23rd, 2008 7:35 am ET

God bless our President-elect! America — UNITE!!

Greg   December 23rd, 2008 7:27 am ET

I find it quite hypocritical that Mr. Obama would even use a bible during the inauguration since he didn't think it necessary to even go to church until after the campaign.

It's also typical of his ego that he even presumes to use the bible of one of our greatest presidents and that no other president has used since.

dede-ole   December 23rd, 2008 7:26 am ET

Obama is walking in the right shoes .lincoln was a great leader worth of celebration.Obama seems to accept the destiny that is being bestoed on him. He seems to look beyoud now and believe in american endurance.

L.V.   December 23rd, 2008 7:24 am ET

If we are not careful.. when this whole thing is said and done we all might be more united….. how scary!!!!!!!

The ghost of Lincoln is BACK!!!

Mike in Ca   December 23rd, 2008 7:18 am ET

A great symbol!

Charles Stoll   December 23rd, 2008 7:14 am ET

Absolutley Fitting and appropriate that the first African American President use an artifact related correlated to the emancipation of African Americans in America. It's about time America got it right.
