Vice president-elect Joe Biden’s grandchildren told him Christmas that they had decided to name his new German shepherd puppy “Champ,” a nickname the VP-elect’s father used for him as a child. Biden’s wife Jill will also be adopting a dog for the vice presidential residence - but her selection will come from the pound. (Photo credit: Tom Kelly IV/Daily Local News)

why is this news? because a german shepherd is the best breed in the world. yes, i would rather that Mr. Biden rescued a gsd, but that is one dog that will never know starvation, hanging & abuse. most people posting should really think about how much they've done for animals before judging. i run a gsd rescue. specifically for shepherds with a bite history. anyone else????

E in Korea   December 26th, 2008 9:15 pm ET

Why does that dog look so dirty? And what about the environment he's in? And what about the adult dog in the background? This doesn't appear to be a healthy situation.

Kevin in WA   December 26th, 2008 9:06 pm ET

I knew there was a reason why Biden was my choice all along for Obama's VP...

I had a German shepherd named "Champ" growing up =)

THis is not really "news" but at least its fun to read about. As for the "usual complainers & whiners (not the dogs)" go bury your bones – cause you are boring to listen to – go howl at the moon 'cause we are tired of your constant yelping.....whining....and your constant peeing on everything because you think its all for you!!

Suzi   December 26th, 2008 8:03 pm ET

Good for them for adopting and loving animals - so what if it's a pure bred. A person doesn't give up the right to enjoy life or make choices just because they are in political office.

It's bad enough if we feel like we have to please our family or our boss – I can't imagine how unpleasant life would be to try to please the 305 million people in the United States. Can't be done.

I appreciate Joe Biden and wish him well in every area of his life.

Joe   December 26th, 2008 7:45 pm ET

Why is this news?

Art from Indy   December 26th, 2008 7:17 pm ET

Hey Tru in FL: Whatcha mean? You have loosely attached thoughts and I don't even want to know how fertile you aren't. I really like Palin because she is not only attractive, but because she is more qualified and capable that you, Obama, or Hillary was when she was elected. I salute the fact she has solid family values and she would bring experience to the national ticket that Obama 08 and Hillary 2000 could not. Forgive me, but I don't want to sleep with you, Hillary nor Gov. Palin. I can make rational decisions re my candidates without wanting to have sex with them. You insult the intelligence of American men. please go away.

Brandon   December 26th, 2008 7:06 pm ET

Some of you people on your high horses. You can barely figure out what to do in your own life and here you are trying to tell other people how to live theirs. If anything, THAT is a big part of what's wrong with this country.

This country truly is in a sad state when people can't just be happy that someone has added a pet to their home. Be it from a pound or reputable breeder, an old hound or a young pup. Some of you are just sad, sad little people.

DISGUSTED!!!!   December 26th, 2008 6:53 pm ET

OMG!! Are you all adults, or children on here?!?! I'm a 24 year old, happily married (for 6 years), mother of 2, who feeds homeless cats, and guess what?!?!? I think it's great that they're getting a puppy- who cares if they "could" adopt from a shelter, really? If that's your reasoning for thinking that Biden is going to be a crappy VP, then God help us all that you can vote!!! Get a life! GROW UP! And focus on things that are really important! Hopefully, if you are all adults (as I suspect), then hopefully my generation is smarter than you! ARGH!

Before Biden feeds his dog any more bones he should check with his vet. Although some say it is 'natural' for dogs to eat bones it is also natural for them to die or have major problems because of bone fragments. And some bones coming out the backside can rip the poor animal a new (fill in the blank)

Andrea/ CA   December 26th, 2008 6:20 pm ET

some of these comments so childisch, and yet grown ups written them.. They can get a puppy or a dog wherever they choose too. I mean really leave them alone. Champ is a great name, and a great dog. Grow up you people, grow up.

Stortz   December 26th, 2008 6:16 pm ET

Pet owners should have the sense that choosing a pet for their home is a PERSONAL CHOICE! The fact that the VP elected has gotten a pure bread Shepherd does NOT mean that this pup came from a puppy mill!

That said, Champ looks to be a fine pup. I have no doubt that he will be loved and spoiled!

Tru in FL   December 26th, 2008 6:12 pm ET

Just because the economy is bad does not mean other stories cannot be reported. That is why news papers and websites have a variety of sections divided by topic. This is a cute puppy. Writing repeated stories of the economy will not change the fate of the economy. For the idiot who mentions it looks like Hillary, your stupid comments of her won't change who she is as a person, the gifts God gave her or her position in the government. We know men like you vote for Palin because you wish you could have her, what man doesn't want a woman with loosely attached thoughts, competitive relationship with her daughter and obviously fertile, prejudiced and small minded. Yes, I know that is very attractive to you but some men like educated, beautiful, funny charming women, men like Obama and Biden and thank God they still exist. There is hope for young, smart women!

Concern citizen!!   December 26th, 2008 6:11 pm ET

Ewww that dog is ugly.

Janet in Reno   December 26th, 2008 6:04 pm ET

I am very thrilled! People who love animals are the best people! Kudos to VP Elect Joe and wife Jill Biden for bringing animals into their lives and the White House community. ANYTHING the Bidens do is A-OK. I am so happy that Joe Biden is our VP Elect. Miracles do happen. 2009 is going to be a wonderful, new year with a fresh start.

BigVin   December 26th, 2008 5:39 pm ET

Looks a little like Hillary

Robin   December 26th, 2008 5:34 pm ET

Economy in the toilet, but I'm so glad CNN can report on the "real" issues.
I could not care less about the dogs both our PE and VP get.

Irritated in Fl   December 26th, 2008 5:34 pm ET

Millions of homeless dogs and they pay hundreds for a pure bred that they are already giving raw meat to. Nothing liken training an attack breed on the taste of blood.

Jillian Walsh   December 26th, 2008 5:25 pm ET

Puppies are in great demand and are much more adoptable than older dogs. I'd like to see the President an VPresident adopt senior dogs and set examples to the public about the benefits of adopting an older dog. These will be the dogs that will be euthanized...not the puppies.

Wendy   December 26th, 2008 5:20 pm ET

I am very disappointed that the vice president-elect chose to support puppy mills instead of rescuing a homeless animal.

Ms. Smith   December 26th, 2008 5:15 pm ET

Nice xmas story! Cute puppy too.

Dan, FL   December 26th, 2008 5:10 pm ET

This is a joke. Just to find a name for the dog takes so long. I wonder how they will manage our country. This is what it is. Wrong people in a wrong place.

Independent Thinker   December 26th, 2008 5:09 pm ET

I can't figure out who is shadier, Obama or Biden. They are both very shady but usually in a shady pair of schemers one is shadier than the other. My guess would have to be Obama.

Gallimimus   December 26th, 2008 5:03 pm ET

If I've learned anything in life. Those folks that are pet owners tend to be more trustworthy and dependable. Obama and Biden are both getting dogs for the whitehouse. Makes me feel optimistic. Better yet it sounds like they might be getting dogs from the pound. Thats even better news.

GuyInVA   December 26th, 2008 5:01 pm ET

Dear "A race to the bottom",

You win that race. You're there.

kerry   December 26th, 2008 5:00 pm ET

I second the greyhound adoption, I have too, awesome dogs that need homes.

RESCUER   December 26th, 2008 4:57 pm ET

Over 4 million homeless dogs are put to death every year. Not because they were "bad" or sick but only because they ran out of time at shelters.

Rory O Shea   December 26th, 2008 4:57 pm ET

I'm glad that Jill will be getting one from a shelter! They need love the most!

BB   December 26th, 2008 4:53 pm ET

I'd hate to have you people pick my dog for me. But I'd like to pick which dog YOU get. Sound idiotic? That's how you people sound trying to give advice on a BLOG.

dollorbil   December 26th, 2008 4:52 pm ET

Champ is a good name. I have raised german shepherds for 40 years and as far as I am concerned a more loyal and family devoted dog cannot be found.

sunshine   December 26th, 2008 4:49 pm ET

we do love our pets, champ is a good name.

Joanne from PA   December 26th, 2008 4:46 pm ET

I second the vote for the greyhound. Got two myself, and they're great dogs! Very deserving of forever homes.

Independent   December 26th, 2008 4:43 pm ET

My, my look at the size of those paws......going to be BIG dog!!!!!!!!!!!

dog lover   December 26th, 2008 4:43 pm ET

I was raised with a german shephard as our family pet and now I own one myself and they are great. Perfect choice and great name

LB   December 26th, 2008 4:40 pm ET

I believe this dog is from the rescue center. Lucky for them, they found a shepherd. I've been on the hunt for a shepherd puppy in shelters for a while. I hope they give him lots of attention.

Bertha Lopez   December 26th, 2008 4:37 pm ET

How precious! Now maybe this will have take care of their animals by having them fixed and increase the adoption at animal shelters.

undecided   December 26th, 2008 4:35 pm ET

it should be named chump.

Kay MA   December 26th, 2008 4:32 pm ET

Kudos to Jill for adopting a pound dog that needs a home =) I wonder what she'll name it?

Carol   December 26th, 2008 4:30 pm ET

I don't know why anybody cares about these dogs. All I care about is how well he and this new President does their jobs and that is a fact.

To much time is being taken up about these animals and that is a fact.

sandee in Portland   December 26th, 2008 4:28 pm ET

Cute dog. Hopefully he's chewing on Chip Saltsman's leg.

IKE in Atlanta   December 26th, 2008 4:28 pm ET

Should have named the dog 'bush'. : good name fo a dog.

Art from Indy   December 26th, 2008 4:26 pm ET

Second dog? You mean Vice President Cheney is getting a new pooch? Biden is not VP yet, but I hear he is busy trying to plagiarize his first speech as VP.

Pat   December 26th, 2008 4:25 pm ET

Good thing VP Biden didn't get an Alaskan Malamute and call it Sarah.

Donner Anitoch, Ca   December 26th, 2008 4:23 pm ET

The Washington dog show.

I hope the dogs are being adopted out of love and not a photo opt. The Obamas, after all have never had a dog but are now seeking one for the white house.

I wonder what happens to these animals when its no longer in fashion to be seen getting off a plane with them?

Perusing-Through   December 26th, 2008 4:12 pm ET

Somebody better send Champ to the gym because he is looking more like Wimpy. Will somebody please put that dog on the tread mill and feed him a high protein diet. Champ has a legacy to carry, and right now Champ does not look as though he is up for the task.

earle,florida   December 26th, 2008 4:11 pm ET

I hope he spends alot of time in "Champs" house. They both can bark at the moon together! No harm done there,...

Milhouse van Houten   December 26th, 2008 4:11 pm ET

Lets just hope"champs"favourite bone isn't in the Vice -Presidents arm.

JM   December 26th, 2008 4:11 pm ET

What a cute puppy. A race to the botton, you are just plain mean!!!

Nancy   December 26th, 2008 4:06 pm ET

Kudos to Jill Biden if she selects a shelter dog. Wish VP Elect Biden had found a very deserving Shepherd at a rescue facility instead of going to a breeder for his new pup! Buying from breeders simply encourages more animals to be bred and born imo. And as most of us probably know by now, shelters and pounds alike across the country are filled with 'companion animals' in desperate need of good homes!

SOUTHERN HOTTIE   December 26th, 2008 4:03 pm ET

eh, he looks like he needs a bath.

jm for sc   December 26th, 2008 4:02 pm ET

Why is there so much interest in what kind of dog goes in the whitehouse this time?

williefloyd   December 26th, 2008 3:58 pm ET

Champ is a perfect name since his master to be is a real "champion" himself. I think they're hoping to find a golden retriever.

tom   December 26th, 2008 3:57 pm ET

Tom in Ca, I guess you don't get it...liberals believe in "do as I say not as I do". As in Al "Carbon Credits" Gore.

Obama Hussein doesn't need a lap dog...he has the national media.

American   December 26th, 2008 3:52 pm ET

Oh brother... surely the VP has better things to concern himself with and SURELY the media has news IT should be reporting.

Tom in CA   December 26th, 2008 3:44 pm ET

Jill,

Get a rescue dog - there are a lot of greyhounds that need homes! However, a Heinz 57 from the pound would be good, too!

Cheryl from MN   December 26th, 2008 3:36 pm ET

Good Name for his Dog

AnaB   December 26th, 2008 3:35 pm ET

Ok, while this is not really what I consider "news", how cute is that little face?

A race to the bottom   December 26th, 2008 3:33 pm ET

I hope hes eating a Republican leg.
