Rahm Emanuel faces possible subpoena

Gov. Blagojevich's attorney urged the Illinois House panel to issue a subpoena to Barack Obama's Chief of Staff Rahm Emanuel.
Gov. Blagojevich's attorney urged the Illinois House panel to issue a subpoena to Barack Obama's Chief of Staff Rahm Emanuel.

(CNN) - The Illinois House panel considering impeachment charges against Gov. Rod Blagojevich has received a letter from the governor's attorney urging the panel to issue subpoenas to more than a dozen potential witnesses, including incoming White House Chief of Staff Rahm Emanuel.

Steve Brown, spokesman for Illinois House Speaker Michael Madigan, confirms to CNN that the impeachment panel received the letter from Blagojevich attorney Ed Genson.

"The committee has taken that letter under advisement," said Brown, noting the panel's next meeting is Monday morning.

Even if the panel moved ahead with such subpoenas, however, they could still be blocked by prosecutor Patrick Fitzgerald, who has previously expressed concern about the impeachment panel interfering with his ongoing criminal probe.

Nevertheless, the maneuvering by Blagojevich's camp could provide a distraction for President-elect Barack Obama and top aides just days after they tried to turn the page on the matter by issing an internal investigation claiming no wrongdoing by the transition team.

Genson, Blagojevich's attorney, did not immediately return a call seeking comment on his letter.

@Arthur I believe what Obama signed had a question about public finance amongst other things. I sure don't care that he had his supporters (myself includd) fund his campaign. I will give an even bigger donation in 4yrs.

@BK I feel the same way about ppl who voted for the decider I mean Bush not once but twice.

This whole thing is going to come out as just one big joke, and the GOV was just pissed off because Obama did not appoint him to any higher position in his new administration. This will be the biggest excuse of all time. They should of waited until the deed was done and his hands have all the red ink on them. And Mr. Emanuel is the key.

The folks that are foaming at the mouth regarding this issue (there is no there, there............!!).are once again setting yourselves up to be made a fool of by Obama and his team.

The politically mature and pragamtic american public can sense the hype in this story.

This is not the time for the usual liberal/conservative idiocy. It is time for americans to focus on saving the nations dwindling economy and world standing.

Blagojevich is the governor of Illinois....so no one should have contact with him ? These recent tactics by the FBI or whatever remind me so much of the Bush administration.

    I HEAR YOU!!!!!!

Payback time? Did someone really write that? Head examined? You people are SO stupid. I hope you are never accused of anything in the future like riding around drunk with your Joe Six Pack. Because you will see what it is like to be accused and have people turn their back on you before a formal charge or hearing comes up against you. Chicago "thugs"…you are following the commentary of Rush Limbaugh? The man makes 38million a year to spew hate while you probably can't even make your next month mortgage and now you are quoting him? Wow, I know people like the Hannitys and Limbaughs of the world are laughing at your broke selves while they use you to spew their illogic and make millions off of your emptiness. Didn't Blago say these people did not play ball with him? Having a convo with someone doesn't make you a criminal. A child having a convo with a drug dealer and telling the dealer NO does not make the child a drug addict. You all want this president to fail so bad that you don't care how that will impact your actual life. Don't forget, your Gods and Heroes, Limbaugh and the crew will be just FINE if the President doesn't do well…you won't.

    QUOTE FROM "Boston Irish":
"If, according to Obama and his camp, there was NO CONTACT between them and the governor's camp, why do they want to subpoena Emanuel?"
    - – - – - –

    Hello Boston Irish,
There is a saying: "Garbage in yields Garbage Out". Your statement is false and illustrates that fact. Obama never said there was "NO CONTACT" with Blagojevich's camp. Obama said there was "NO IMPROPER DEALINGS" with Blagojevich's camp. The rest of your misguided and misleading comments build on your "Garbage In".

John 8:32 = = And ye shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free.

Know the truth "Boston Irish" and free yourself.

If wisdom is not applied, the Prosecutors; the Press; the Pundits and the Politicians will jeopardice the case against Rod Blagojevich.

My dad used to say: "if a blind man say he will punch your nose, take it seriously because you don't know the power he believes on". Remember, Blago vowed to fight, and I bet you he will not go away quietly. He won't let his carrier be sunk just like that. He will unearthen all old dirt, I guarantee you. Watch out for it America!

If rahm actually does get issued a subpoena and then does the honarble thing and actually shows up to court, then that'd already be a complete shift from the current admin. who are constantly dodging these things as if they were a summons for jury duty.

If you stop and think about it, it was the defense attorney for Blagojavich who wants to subpoena Emmanuel and others. This would mean that they don't think anything wrong could come from a subpoena to them. They hope to use them for defending their client. You haters of Obama need to stop and think before spewing your hateful comments. Obama had nothing to do with the sleeziness of Blagojavich. Blagojavich is just trying to keep his name in the news to get the 15 minutes his ego needs. He is a very corrupt person who considers himself above the law.

Democrats really need to learn the politic of this country. Mostly, they need to learn the GOP politic and different tools they use to neutralize any Democrat advantage.
Democrats behave like small children in the house who accuse, attack, and complaint about each other for anything. GOP leaders don’t do that. Maybe because they really love their party, while some Democrats are in the party for just opportunity to have place in the public office.
They should know that this scandal is an opportunity for GOP to try to hurt the PE Obama and their party Thus, they should have been politically mature enough to down play the situation, and go to attack against GOP instead of publicly attacking the governor.
Also, they should not isolate this Governor in order to avoid any revolt from him, like this one.
I do believe that the best defense is the attack

Ah, yes, Chicago politics now taken to the national level. Fire up the Special Prosecutor bus, cuz this is going to be the crookedest administration since the Clintonistas and that Gang of Thuggest lawyers ran rough-shod over the Constitution! Look at Rahm's face. He looks like the fricking Grinch! He's one of the most despicable politicians ever. Recall his "Kill all the Republicans" rant.

  20. Stop Whining RepubliCONS

You Republican whiners are so annoying. You are like children. You can try to conjur up whatever scandal you want to about Obama and try to make it stick (you won't). The fact of the matter is that the VAST majority of Americans DON'T CARE WHAT YOU THINK OR WHAT YOU SAY!!! We support Obama WHOLEHEARTEDLY!!! What you say is irrelevent to us, and you are mere distractions to the actual important issues of the day.

It's so ironic that you same Republicon's were thumbing your nose at the fact that Palin was actually found to abuse her power and act in a very unethical manner....Obama isn't under investigation here, but Palin herself was.

Regardless, Obama's hands are clean in this matter. And I'm just so relieved that the vast majority in this world support him. 1/20/09 cannot come soon enough. That is when the REAL MEN can officially start cleaning up the mess that you children created for us.

It's funny to see the democrats try and cover for Obama and his incoming staff over this. All of a sudden, you are innocent until proven guilty, but if you are a Republican, or a friend of Bush, you are guilty until proven innocent. My how they change their tune when their own man is involved. Maybe the Obama supporters will soon realize that Obama does not represent the "hope" and "change" that they fell for in his pretty speeches, but the same old Chicago style politics, full of corruption.

What is really amazing is that you have a President-Elect already having to deal with corruption charges and connections even before he gets into office.

Or maybe it is Bush's fault that Obama is involved. Liberal democrats seem to blame everything else on Bush.

    Let the hate-filled liberal democrat comments commence in 3, 2, 1 ...

Don't you think you should wait and see if Obama at least does a good job before you vow to "give an even bigger donation in 4 yrs.?"

If folks had really scrutinized Bush after his first four years, there might not have been another four. But they, too, made up their minds before analyzing the job he'd done.
