RNC chair candidate sends out controversial Obama song

(CNN) - A candidate for Republican National Committee chairman said Friday it was clear the content of a CD he sent committee members for Christmas - that included lyrics from a song called “Barack the Magic Negro” - was intended as a joke.

“I think most people recognize political satire when they see it,” Chip Saltsman told CNN. “I think RNC members understand that.” Saltsman, a former chair of the Tennessee Republican Party, was a top advisor to former Senate Majority Leader Bill Frist, and managed former Arkansas Gov. Mike Huckabee’s presidential campaign.

The song, set to the tune of “Puff the Magic Dragon,” was first played on Rush Limbaugh’s radio show in 2007. Its title was drawn from a Los Angeles Times column that suggested Obama appealed to those who feel guilty about the nation’s history of mistreatment of African-Americans. Saltsman said the song, penned by long-time friend Paul Shanklin, should be easily recognized as satire directed at the Times.

The parody CD sent to RNC members this Christmas, first reported by The Hill Friday, is titled “We Hate the USA”, and includes songs referencing former presidential John Edwards and the Rev. Jeremiah Wright, among other targets.

To defend this stupidity as political satire is just stupid. It puts you in the backward mind-set of the Republican operatives. Glad to see them go.

I'm not much of one for politically correct phrases, but this is beyond comprehension. A thinly disguised attempt at racial humor from a person who wants to be chair of the RNC. When will these republicans realize that white people are now in the minority in our country and everytime they hurl a racial insult they are basically insulting the majority of our citizens. Time for the "do it our way, think like we do" party to bow out of the political system.

I'm a white Southern lady, I voted for Obama though I consider myself an Independent-I doubt I'll ever cast another vote for any Republican no matter who the candidate might be. Disgusting racists are a blemish on our society!!

As long as the GOP continues to think that Obama's election was about race, they will continue to miss the big picture, and will become more and more irrelevant in our country's politics going forward.

They may think, or may joke, that people voted for Obama because of race, that people were trying to make amends about past racial sins, that people were afraid to criticize a black candidate, etc., etc., etc. And maybe this indeed played out for some margin of the voters. But the truth of the matter is that Obama was elected by the majority of the voters because he showed himself to be by far the most qualified candidate. And all you have to do is watch how his transition is going now to know that it is true. Obama is far and away superior in intellect, in decision-making approaches, in collaboration abilities, and in calm, presidential temperament compared to the GOP ticket he ran against.

The GOP is going to have to figure out how to act as solution-oriented adults in a world of serious adult problems before they are to be taken seriously again. Right now, at least this group is still acting like a bunch of name-calling 3rd graders.

These days people say and do racist things all the time and attempt to cover it up saying it's only a joke or "satire"

The RNC are a bunch of bigots and after the McCain and Palin "klan rallies", oops I mean town meetings, are we the least bit surprised.

So, would it also be okay if I sent everyone a song called "McCain, the old cracker?"

Are you kidding me? That guy knew EXACTLY what he was doing when he sent out that silliness. Calling "racism" a form of satire is stupid and unimaginative.

When I first read about this, I thought racist ignorant bigots!. Then the Democrtic strategist in me said racist ignorant bigots - the RNC really shows its true colours (Racist National Commitee indeed!). For every Michael Steele, the GOP is and always will be run by an old school bigot network. Now, is there anyway that these people can move on from their loss? I doubt it. McCain sold his soul to these idiots and lost (with the help of Gov Palin). After a landside election I dont think that these bigot realize that they have marginalized themselves and have become a regional niche party that panders to the worst character traits: Fear, ignorance, and xenophobia. By the way where are Peter, Paul, and Mary don't they own the song?

As a Republican all I can say is what an idiot this guy is.

It reminds me of others saying that McCain would play the race card during the election.

Keep race out of politics and out of civil discourse.

The countries unemployment rate is steadily climbing, thousands of homes continue to go into foreclosure and 2009 is going to be even tougher. Yet the RNC have time to make up racist songs to the tune of Puff The Magic Dragon.
After 8 years of their incompetant leadership I'm surprised things aren't worse than what they are.

AT LEAST THE DEMOCRATS AND LIBERALS' DON'T CRITICIZE OTHER PEOPLE'S BEHAVIOUR WHEN IT COMES TO MORAL. SAME ON THE REPUBLICANS THEY SHOULD LOOK AT THEMSELVES IN THE MIRROR OR IS IT BECAUSE THEY ARE "RICHER" THAN DEMOCRATS AND THEY HAVE THE RIGHT TO BE RACIST!

The only way these morons will stop, is for everyone stop buying the products of the sponsors for the Rush Limbaugh’s radio show and his close friends.

Once they are off the air they can go out in the street and play their CD.
Rush does have the moxie to do this though; and, beside there's no money in it – the real reason he does every screwy thing he does!

I'm glad to see there is not even "one" comment that supports Rush and his band of LOSERS! Thanks for Standing Up Americans!
