Betty, we've seen the birth certificate. It's real. It's there. And if you think some midnight decision is going to keep him from being president, then you're just going to have to repeat after me: President Barack Hussein Obama. America's first African-American president, in office by electoral landslide.
And there isn't a thing your twisted self can do about it.

TrueIndependent   December 27th, 2008 8:50 pm ET

Amazing how the Republicans don't see the power outage for exactly what it is – a devastation of American infrastructure after 8 years of Republican MISRULE.

Oops, sorry, they would actually have to be educated, and possess the ability to logically reason!

katharine   December 27th, 2008 8:48 pm ET

Kudos to the HECO (Hawaiian Electric Company) employees who climbed a dangerous mountain at night to get this thing fixed. We on Oahu are grateful. Thanks to everyone who practiced aloha and unsnarled the traffic without getting angry. Thanks to the tourists in Waikiki for staying calm. I am proud to live in Hawaii.

Helen, VT   December 27th, 2008 8:45 pm ET

Proud American, You need to get a life. You go to Kenya and see what is going on. I have my right of expression. Truth hurts like you idiot.

HouseDiva   December 27th, 2008 8:44 pm ET

the Obamas are black...they know how to survive without power ;)

Betty Phillips   December 27th, 2008 8:31 pm ET

It looks as if a few of you "leavers of comments" have just had a wake up call about your president-elect, this will cause me to have a very restful night, now lets just wait and see what the "Gov-in- doubt" from Illinois will have to say about Mr.OBama, and his group, oops! I think it is going to be UNKIND, but, I am sure Mr. Obama can come up with another one of his cover ups, WHO GETS OBAMA'S SEAT?? Again, we must let Oprah in on that decision, after all, she could give away FREE cars and yet we have people losing their jobs with the 3 automakers, something here stinks, but again, lets let Oprah and Michelle answer that question, I am dying to hear what they have to say!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!Betty

Gary   December 27th, 2008 8:21 pm ET

If anyone states that outage is good for the "elitist" Obama, trust me that's there's nothing elitist about staying in a darkened airport, highway, or building for over 6 hours.

Betty Phillips   December 27th, 2008 8:12 pm ET

for all of you Obama lovers, ask yourself this one question, why will Obama not produce a birth certificate? Oh sorry, I guess you are just too stupid to put it together, Obama is NOT an American Citizen or he would proudly produce a certificate, wake up you numskulls, he is a citizen of KENYA,and he is PROUD OF IT!!!. Glory to God his wife is going to be SOOOO PROUD OF HIM, now the big question, WILL SHE BE PROUD OF HER COUNTRY????? that is a question that she will have to think about, I have an idea-Have Oprah to answer it for her!!!

Most of the power has restored to Oahu. The rhythm of daily life is taking shape, and people are moving along with enjoying the remainder of Saturday. Waikiki got power soon after daylight, and the major shopping malls had power by 10:30 am.

I wish it was possible to institute a requirement that a poster have an IQ in triple digits (that's 100 or over) before being allowed to post.

Come to think of it, that wouldn't be a bad requirement for VOTING, either. Had it been in place in 2000 or 2004, we wouldn't have been subjected to eight years of the fascist oligarchy of the Busch Reich.

Evil Newsroom Overlord: Are you kidding me? It's the day after Boxing Day, there's not a thing moving in Washington. Give me something – anything – I don't care what – we've got time to fill here...

Ed Henry: Um... ah... well... the power went out in Hawaii...

IKE   December 27th, 2008 7:36 pm ET

How important, over 200 peoople die in one day and CNN is worrying about the Obamas being without power for 20 minutes.

Mike   December 27th, 2008 7:32 pm ET

Pretty ironic, as Obama kept America in the dark during all of the campaigns. Wait for Obama's great American economic blackout, opening January 2009.

Perilous   December 27th, 2008 7:32 pm ET

You people scare the hell out of me. Look at how the majority of you are acting. It's no wonder we are ridiculed across the globe by almost every other country on the planet. I dont want to be one of you, and I dont want to have to live in a country full of people like you. What awful, ignorant, hateful, horrible people. How can any of you stand to be that way? How can you not know what you are?

Also, CNN? Articles like these – what are you thinking? There are other people in Oahu besides the Obama family, who would probably point out the same thing. What's the matter with you? Have you heard there's some kind of ruckus in Gaza at the moment? Did you realize that we still have troops in Iraq and Afghanistan who are dying? Do you realize that Mr. Obama has not yet been sworn into office? Do you have any idea how deeply troubled our failing educational system is?

Do you understand that there are far more important things to be covering than the Obamas hanging out on a well-earned vacation in a place is almost certain to be provided with emergency power sources, even if it's just because of who he is? The Obama vacation is not something you need to be concerned with right now. Snap out of this Britney Spears paparazzi mentality.

Everyone in this country seriously needs to snap out of it and open their eyes to what's going on in the real world. I'm an avid support of Barack Obama and I voted for him, but I'm not talking to everyone who doesnt adhere to my point of view. I'm talking to every single one of us, myself included. Enough is enough already. We are in dire trouble, and this is NOT how we're going to get out of it.

Unbelievable. Really just unbelievable. This is why I'm ashamed of my own country.

FreeNLovIt   December 27th, 2008 7:29 pm ET

W was the 'Chosen One' to create the biggest mess in our history. Obama will now be the one to clean it up. Our government will be more effective and more efficient. The next stage is for the world to become a transparent government. Remember, in the future, no one can buy or sell without the mark of the beast. This calls for ultimate transparency within all world governments. Governments will become more and more effective and efficient in identifying US.

Kim J   December 27th, 2008 7:27 pm ET

Thankfully they were able to get emergency generators to the Obama palace showing they are just regular folks like the rest of us.

Just in case you didn't know it...Obama was born in Hawaii not Africa.
Perhaps you need to join Palin and Rudy and just see what "a communtiy organizer " can do. For someone with no experience and had not accomplish " nada", Obama out fundraised, kept his focus and accomplished the mission.
So, you can either join in and help get this country out of this mess or move.

Lauren   December 27th, 2008 7:11 pm ET

Gee, I wonder if CNN and Obama are really going to care when hard working people can not afford to pay thier electric bill.

Obama and his family are fine I am sure, he has enough light radiating from his Halo.

adamandrew   December 27th, 2008 6:56 pm ET

Too bad the lights didn't go out when Cheney was hunting. We might have had grounds to impeach him.

Proud American   December 27th, 2008 6:55 pm ET

Richard Rohde I read your book in the library of congress and I must tell you I cried. Your the reason people die to come to this country, what you have accomplished in your life is nothing short of a amazing. Republican idiot, 4th grade graduate, (married to your sister) and supervisor of french fries at Jack-in-the-box. Your a shinning example for everyone in the world that you can be anything you want in this country. God Bless America

Helen, VT   December 27th, 2008 6:53 pm ET

Barack has to learn reality in life. He should be familiar about blackoutrs in Africa especially Kenya and other neighboring countries. It is a good experience because Barack has no experience whatsoever and he is depending on the tem of advisors for everyhting.

Aaron from Ohio   December 27th, 2008 6:43 pm ET

I love seeing the Obama haters here on CNN. It means they aren't watching Fox and pushing up their ratings. God didn't knock the power out because Obama was in Hawaii anymore than he sent hurricane Ike to trash Texas because Bush lives there. Weather happens. Storms knock out the electricity and hurricanes blow houses away. If the sun comes upt and Hawaii has a beautiful day it doesn't mean God is showing his approval of Obama, it means the earth is still turning. That's all it means. We didn't vote for Obama because we think he's the Messiah or because we think he can walk on water. We voted for him because we thought he was better than the republican candidate. It really was THAT simple. All of this crazy talk about Obama being "The Chosen One" doesn't come from the democrats, fed up republicans, independents and moderates who voted for him, it comes from the fringe element of the right wing that had their cozy little image of a white America that existed only in their heads. America consists of all people from all states. All races, all religions and all sexual orientations. That is the real America.

Envious weak losers. Its ok. Obama is for all people – even you.
Thats just the kind of president you are getting, even though you dont deserve him. Just chill and wait on your prosperity and stimulus check, its coming

Some of the comments on this page make me happy to know that I take a yearly vacation to Europe. Mainly to get away from idiots in this country.

Andrew   December 27th, 2008 6:18 pm ET

Holy crap people. It's just a simple article about a blackout in Oahu and everybody else wants it to be a bad omen or it turns into some rediculous and immature political talk. Get a life people.

Marie   December 27th, 2008 6:18 pm ET

who cares, why is everything that happens to this man news. Look at the tragic headlines right now from Gaza, and this is what we focus on, the Obamas without power, what a tragedy!

Eileen Patterson   December 27th, 2008 6:08 pm ET

It must be Obama's fault that there was a storm in any part of the USA. And that his own place was not prepared to handle it?? My, my, sounds like he is just another "W" waiting to be sworn in...

lou   December 27th, 2008 6:08 pm ET

Who cares? So the lights went out for a while. It's happened before and will happen again. If NObama wasn't there, it wouldn't even make the news. If you think the lights went out there, wait until he's in the Oval Office and sells America out to his Middle East buddies from childhood.

Tim   December 27th, 2008 6:07 pm ET

Hey Richard Rohde, I see you commenting a lot with your Rush Limbaugh dribble here on CNN. What is it like to live while being so dumb that you're mentally incapable of coming up with a single thought of your own? Try getting off the computer, I'm sure that your wife/sister (same person) is getting lonely. How does it feel knowing that no matter how much you whine and moan like the impotent child you are, your life is controlled by the vast Democratic majority that controls this country? Republicans are over, get with it guy. By the way, your bib has drool on it.

CONCERNED DEMOCRAT   December 27th, 2008 6:05 pm ET

Shouldn't the story be that millions of people were without power vs. one family?

The Obamas were the least inconvenienced........the luxury resorts and condos have back up generators so they were just fine.

Proud American   December 27th, 2008 6:04 pm ET

"Richard Rohde" at some point in your life you will have to stop being so stupid. You lost idiot, now get over it. Congradulations on the promotion to supervisor of the french fries at Jack-in-the-box. Your a shinning example for the rest of the country of can happen with hard work and a 4th grade education.

Proud American   December 27th, 2008 6:02 pm ET

Hey "D" your a coward to afraid to spell entire name. Truth hurts dosen't it. You could be the poster child for free abortions in this country. Don't blame the rest of the country because your brother and sister is also your first cousin. Jerry Springer show Idiot.

katharine   December 27th, 2008 6:00 pm ET

Wow, people chill. This was was a big deal here and the only news reports are concerned with Obama. 900,000 people were without power, traffic was scarily snarled for hours, the water pumps were down, and the food supply was in danger. Oahu is an island with few options – this was a power failure that could have been solved in minutes in any other state connected to a grid. Where are the mentions of energy independence and alternative technologies? Frankly it's a good thing Obama was here to experience the utter fragility of our energy infrastructure. I'm sure he will be thinking more about energy policy.

Life is Good   December 27th, 2008 5:56 pm ET

Has anyone else noticed that, since the election, all those who do not support Obama seem to have migrated from Fox News to CNN? I guess they figured they were just 'preaching to the choir' over there, and weren't able to get a rise out of anyone. So, they've moved here and spew their hate with the sole intent of offending others. It's been entertaining.

Is this a huge news story, not really – was it a 12 hour logistical nightmare for security – probably.

popeye   December 27th, 2008 5:53 pm ET

Great but what about the Israel/Palestinian issue?

We now have a lame duck doesn't care for a president and a on vacation newbie! Lovely.

Meanwhile, innocent children suffer and die.

We didn't care in Iraq so I guess it just continues.

karen p   December 27th, 2008 5:51 pm ET

Give the man a break. He's not even President yet. Let him have a few moments of privacy before we demand he turn his every waking moment over to us.

J-Train   December 27th, 2008 5:51 pm ET

So what if he were a Muslim Betty? Wake up and get a clue. The next time somebody anybody Muslim or otherwise wants to attack the good ole US of A it will happen no matter who the President is. I pray that day never comes but I dont believe anybody blamed Bush for 9-11 yet he gets credit for keeping us "safe".

jrq   December 27th, 2008 5:41 pm ET

I just read what others here have posted and can't get over how racist the comments are. Sad and scary.

jrq   December 27th, 2008 5:38 pm ET

Aside from the heat and no fans this island vacation time is a home land security problem. Our economy is so fragile that any our new President needs to vacation some where else. Or at least be on a Military base which he is within 3 miles of as of today.
Bush did this same thing of staying at his home in Texas and avoiding the White House because his wife didn't like Washington. Then September 11th came and he hustled his back side to the White House.

Ann   December 27th, 2008 5:27 pm ET

mb   December 27th, 2008 5:19 pm ET

Clifford, what is a typical minority? Since Obama is bi-racial, do you mean the black half or the white half? And before you write something this stupid again, maybe you should look up the stats and be sure to include the Latinos, Hispanics, Asians, Native Americans and those that are bi-racial and multi-racial, black and white and you will really see who is in the minority.

Amazing. As a teacher I try, on a daily basis, to educate the youth of my school to be respectful and tolerant. I do not have a problem w/nine-year-olds grasping this concept. It is obvious, however, that the problem lies with the parents – not the children. They watch and listen to the bigotry and hatred you spew...and then they repeat it at school. I'm talking to both sides, here. For the sake of our children and the future of our nation – GROW UP!

Observer   December 27th, 2008 4:17 pm ET

Well, talking about Darwin,

I and many other people around the world thought that Barack Obama's election victory was a sign for cultural and human evolution in the United States and in the world – against the pattern of the last eight years that fell far behind the standards of Ancient Rome, for instance, where radical "religious" fear-mongering had no place (before the rise of "Christianity", of course), to mention only one interesting aspect where our "modern" society has actually fallen behind.

Unfortunately, many comments on this page do not support the impression of a cultural evolution, but I am convinced that the majority of the American people is much better and deserves much better than that!

MaryanneAZ   December 27th, 2008 4:08 pm ET

This story is hardly news, except for the difficulty of maintaining security for the Obamas. Security seems to be a major necessity with so much hatred and vitriol of those who did not vote for him. The way a democracy works - everyone votes, someone wins. That person becomes the next President. We endured 8 years of Bush, and now you get to give our guy a chance in '09. If you think you can find someone better than our guy, then locate that candidate and start building up her campaign in 2012. Until then, embrace patriotism and nationalism and put yourselves into action to improve the Nation. Spouting off about an event that is over makes no sense. Please donate to your local food bank. Michelle Obama just sent an email to supporters asking for the same donation. The Obamas care so much about this Nation that even on vacation emails are sent to supporters asking us to remember those who are not as blessed as we are during the holiday season. I've donated twice so far to my local food bank. The food banks really need the help right now. You've got four years before the next election, so use this time between elections to make a difference. Thanks.

catmom...Where were the haters?...it was the liberals doing (or trying to do) everything you just described. As in voting against the war AFTER voting for it. As in cheering every seback and ignoring every success in Iraq. As in spreading – thru their lapdogs in the media – disinformation to the point of giving aid and comfort to the enemy. This will be pay back, remember obama hussein only got 54% of the vote in an election that should have been a landslide. A demographic look at the votes showed ~75% of all counties voted red. Only the cities (with high minority populations-that couldn't care less in previous elections) were blue in a sea of red. You will remember that in 4 years

Proud American really shows that great libercratic spirit that defames anyone with a dissenting opinion; Hussein and his Chicago thugs are already trampling our rights and constitution, doing the bididng of their union owners. SEIU, UAW and ATU all chicago thugs, corrupt and ACORN supporting. What did Blago want to become? A union executive, that is true corruption. What about that golf course that UAW owns and loses lots of money on every year. It is for union executives and now we the taxpayers will be paying for it. That's Chicago style and it is where our PE comes from. He has never met a Union proposal no matter how goofy or corrupt he didn;t support. He endorsed Blago twice.

Gosh that is terrible ! One would think Obama could wave his magic socialist wand and restore order !

Ernie in LA   December 27th, 2008 3:17 pm ET

I can not believe that all you Dems refer to the hate that the repubs spew out after all that you say about Bush, McCain, Palin and so many more. There are many on each side to hate.

D   December 27th, 2008 3:15 pm ET

"Proud" American -

How can you be a proud American and yet hate and despise nearly half the country?

You are hateful, narrow minded, intolerant, and bigoted toward tens of millions of your own countrymen. You call that patriotism?

Proud American   December 27th, 2008 3:14 pm ET

It's because of Idiots like Clifford that abortion is still legal in this country. His Parents should be inprisoned for having children, this is what happens when brother and sister and uncle and aunts and farm aminals lay down together.

austin   December 27th, 2008 3:09 pm ET

where are the critics and reporters now... he is in a 4 million dollar house. i remember an article that criticized bush on moving into a 2 million dollar house. the media is having an affair with obama.

ken   December 27th, 2008 3:09 pm ET

Why does cnn always show Israel as the bad guy when Hammas attacks israel daily and u don't show Israels damage. Dissapointed in your reporting

Edwin   December 27th, 2008 3:08 pm ET

Clifford –

You're R A COWARD, hiding behind the comfort of the internet because you not MAN enough to face your fears straight up and tell a REAL PERSON HOW YOU FEEL. BUT DON’T WORRY. MINORITIES ARE ON THE FRONT LINE IN IRAQ SO YOU CAN SPEAK YOU MIND IN PUBLIC HERE IN THE GOOD OL' US of A. So you can stop running home, jumping on the internet and spewing the crap from your heart, afraid to let people know how you really feel.

gregg45   December 27th, 2008 3:07 pm ET

why did not god give power to obama ,, im sure 54 mill people would have been happy to move rocks and build an army of obots to help the messiah ,wake up america,, oh wait,,, thats happen b4... 1935 -1945.. name the god

Amber   December 27th, 2008 3:07 pm ET

Godluvr: thank you. This is my favorite Psalm.

Psalm 91:1, 5-6, 10-11

1 he that dwelleth in the secret place of the most high shall abide in the shadow of the Almighty.

5 Thou shall not be afraid of the terror by night, nor the arrow that flieth by day

6 nor for the pestilence that walkerh in darkness; nor for the destruction that wasteth at noonday.

10 There shall no evil befall thee, neither shall any plague come nigh thy dwelling.

11 For He shall give His angels charge over thee, to keep thee in all thy ways.

Rohm Emanel did nothing wrong

Proud American   December 27th, 2008 3:03 pm ET

This is so funny, Republicans are such hateful Idiots. I would sure hate to be a republican in times like these. No plans, Lacking a vision, Stupid and when the American people reject them, they become hateful. Their just one big Village full of Idiots.

JonnyAZ   December 27th, 2008 3:01 pm ET

I am so glad to see this report – I was so concerned the Obamas were safe.
Guess they are the only ones impacted by getting caught in the dark.

Did this article really need to include the name tossing? Like we really care... Happens all the time to people.

Charles Phillips   December 27th, 2008 2:59 pm ET

I do not feel that the blackout would effect Obama in any way.

Bill Williford   December 27th, 2008 2:59 pm ET

What is this business about a "protective press Detail"? Are they armed? Do they have radio comm with Secret Service or other First Responders? Sounds like a wannabe blowing up his own baloon.

malabar   December 27th, 2008 2:58 pm ET

who cares? sarah! sarah! sarah!

Debby   December 27th, 2008 2:57 pm ET

No generator in a 9 million dollar home that is odd.

Proud American   December 27th, 2008 2:57 pm ET

Clifford your a complete idiot. I'm willing to bet your parents are brother and sister.

Barbara   December 27th, 2008 2:55 pm ET

The media is acting very paparazzi like. Can't the Obama family just enjoy their vacation before they take on the big major responsibility they have coming up?

Bob From Boston   December 27th, 2008 2:54 pm ET

Dark days are looming for our country...I told you so "the guy has not even been elected and we are in the dark....we will be back in two years

ps...President elect did you notice that "Stony silence from our soldiers"?

Betty Phillips   December 27th, 2008 2:53 pm ET

All the Lori's out there who blames Bush for everything should think about getting a life. It sounds as if they are not able to come up with any intelligent remark on their own. Lets see how Lori responds to a 4 year term of living with a fear of being blown out of their bed during a peaceful night, I maybe wrong, BUT did George Bush keep her in her nice bed for the remainer of his term? Oh yes, Lori, do you not know that OBAMA is a MUSLIM? Lets just see how safe he will keep you from attacks from his PEOPLE, wake up Lori and realize the danger we are going to be in for the next four years, I bet you are saying "there is a George Bush person, WRONG!!! I did not vote for Bush, but, I am smart enough to know that OBAMA is sooo WRONG FOR OUR LEADER. Betty Phillips

Barbara   December 27th, 2008 2:53 pm ET

Clifford's comment is so KKK – it should be removed

Obama63   December 27th, 2008 2:49 pm ET

From the comment of the "Texas teacher" I understand why there is such an urgent need to reform the Educational system in this Country.

The ignorance is so palbable it's scary!

We really need to do something about this kind of ignorant people, or they will drag all of us down where 8 years of RNC administration was heading to!
I cannot believe we let these apes (they do not believe in Darwinism, so it makes sense....for them) elect and rielect Bush! They do not even realize the mess we are in is their fault!

They almost destryed our country, and are still "smart" talking, (sorry, I know it is a stretch) instead of looking for a cave to hide for the NEXT 8 years!

Steven   December 27th, 2008 2:47 pm ET

Clifford, when you want to be offensive, you have to go all the way. 'Minority' is not offensive, if you really mean it, why not insult us all the way i.e. be specific. You should feel better when you cross that threshold from 'guy uncomfortable with different people' to 'total bigot'. God bless.

Godluvr   December 27th, 2008 2:47 pm ET

God, please keep your Ps. 91 protection over PE Obama, family, friends, and all of your people, in Jesus' name. Thank you.

Brenda C   December 27th, 2008 2:47 pm ET

Can't believe obama didn't walk out on the water and demand power be restored. Maybe he just needed a smoke in private?

hjn   December 27th, 2008 2:43 pm ET

Can't believe that he's still around to make fun of. little president elect bin laden excuse me obamba whatever, what a joke. The new song is cute, though.

clifford   December 27th, 2008 2:41 pm ET

Obama: Typical minority, didn't pay his electric bill !!

Lori   December 27th, 2008 2:41 pm ET

The only blackout that needs to be reported is the blackout in George Bush's head.

Joe Fattal   December 27th, 2008 2:40 pm ET

That might would have happened on christmas day, or christmas eve. But I guess why spoiling it for eveyone. Dark is black and black is beautiful.

Erika, KS   December 27th, 2008 2:30 pm ET

So what? Would this be news if Obama wasn't there? Pathetic.

esmith512   December 27th, 2008 2:28 pm ET

The timing is certainly interesting. What was the /actual/ cause of and /actual/ actors-agents in creating the power failure?

catmom   December 27th, 2008 2:25 pm ET

So, for the next four years Republicans will blow anything related to Obama completely out of proportion. Yell for a special prosecutor, do everything they can to try and destroy Obama's presidency the same way they did to Bill Clinton. Yeah, sounds like they really love this country. Pitiful, pitiful. Wonder where all you haters were while Bush and Republicans were destroying this country?

catmom   December 27th, 2008 2:24 pm ET

There you go..... Even in Hawaii.... :)

Ernie in LA   December 27th, 2008 2:14 pm ET

Gerry   December 27th, 2008 2:13 pm ET

Earth to the RNC: the ‘n’ word is offensive to anybody who has been paying attention to the cultural development of race relations in the US for the past 50 years. The RNC appears to be destined to complete the termination of the GOP that was begun by G W Bush and nearly completed by John McCain. Way to go, RNC, please keep up the good work. I can hardly wait for the day when the mention of the phrase ‘Republican Party’ is met with the questions: what’s that?

Amber   December 27th, 2008 2:11 pm ET

Now if we could only have a news blackout on the minutia of the Obamas family vacation, and focus instead on REAL news...

Enjoy your holiday Mr. President-Elect.

Milhouse van Houten   December 27th, 2008 2:03 pm ET

Wow,the President-elect sure does pack some power.

earle,florida   December 27th, 2008 2:02 pm ET

D in Honolulu   December 27th, 2008 1:44 pm ET

Took a full 12 hours for Waikiki and Diamond Head to get their power back up.

Lost power around 6:30 p.m., and Waikiki usually starts to liven up after dark...too bad for the tourists.

We're up and functioning just fine now. :)

MLH   December 27th, 2008 1:42 pm ET

You disappoint me – are they using candles or flashlights? I thought the press pool would make sure that they had immediate access to vital information of that sort!

Cynic   December 27th, 2008 1:42 pm ET

I'm surprised that Pat Robertson, or some other unstable evangelical christian monkey preacher hasn't claimed that the lightening storms were part of a supernatural warning.

PJP   December 27th, 2008 1:30 pm ET

Can the press see him now????
