Laura Bush spoke out about the shoe incident in an interview with 'Fox News Sunday.'

(CNN) - First Lady Laura Bush said that although she “wasn’t amused” when an Iraqi journalist threw shoes at her husband, she sees the incident as a sign that “Iraqis feel a lot freer to express themselves.”

Earlier this month, an Iraqi journalist threw shoes at President Bush during a news conference in Baghdad. Bush ducked, and the shoes, flung one at a time, sailed past his head.

“It was an assault. And that's what it is,” the first lady said in an interview that aired Sunday on “Fox News.”

“And the president laughed it off. He wasn't hurt. He's very quick. As you know, he's a natural athlete. And that's it. But on the other hand, it is an assault, and I think it should be treated that way,” she said.

During the incident, the shoe-thrower - identified as Muntadhar al-Zaidi – could be heard yelling in Arabic: "This is a farewell ... you dog!" Al-Zaidi is an Iraqi journalist with Egypt-based al-Baghdadia television network.

Hurling shoes at someone, or sitting so that the bottom of a shoe faces another person, is considered an insult among Muslims.

Asked if she thinks someone who attacks another person should be released, Bush said, “that’s going to be up to the Iraqis.”

“And they'll do whatever. But I know that if Saddam Hussein had been there, the man wouldn't have been released. And he probably wouldn't - you know, would have been executed.

“So it is - as bad as the incident is, in my view, it is a sign that Iraqis feel a lot freer to express themselves,” she said.

Muntadhar al-Zaidi goes on trial Wednesday (Dec. 31) on charges of assaulting a foreign leader. Conviction could mean a prison sentence of up to two years.

Does the presidents wife have an idea about the number of americans that would have done the same thing considering that it is an offense in the middle east and not in the United States, sounds like she lives in a fantasy world! Does anyone like her husband????????

@the failures who call Obama the "Messiah"   December 29th, 2008 3:53 am ET

1. Put down the kool-aid, and change the channel from Fox News to C-Span.

2. Find the nearest shoe and smack yourself with it repeatedly.

3. Sit back and watch our Pres-elect take charge, something Bush can't do in a million years.

4. Unsubscribe from "Fox News", "Team Sarah.org", "The RNC", and from anyone who is a religious conservative.

5. Make sure the Bible is nowhere near your children.

6. Make sure your guns aren't loaded and aren't easy to reach.

7. Board the next trip to North Korea.

The only thing wrong with your statement is that Bush made up the lies(intelligence reports) and the others only believed the lies.

BUSH BEGONE AND 75% OF AMERICANS FINALLY AGREE!   December 28th, 2008 9:59 pm ET

@Pat I believe that folks like you that beat their chest and send others kids to die or be maimed are the true depiction of traitor. The war was "pre-emptive". You want to tell the parents of those that died their kids died so Bush and Republicans could spread the "seed of democracy"? Don't want to be in your shoes on judgment day!

I also belive that OLD men like you start wars, and young men die in wars!

Bruce   December 28th, 2008 9:59 pm ET

Anyone in here who advocates throwing a shoe at a head of state is no more than a traitor. whether you liked him or not he was YOUR President. The shoe wasn't thrown at just him, it was thrown at all of us. Again, whether you like it or not he presesents all of you as well. I wonder how you will feel when a terrorist throws a dirty bomb at us. who are you going to blame then? Probably bush since most of you all are morons and don't have a clue as to what really happens around the world. All you see are the 30 second sound bites and the left-leaning liberal media. You all are like lemmings going to the sea, you just follow the leader because you don't have any brains yourselves. You people just don't get it. All of you are just a bunch of morons.

Texas Teacher   December 28th, 2008 9:52 pm ET

I must say that I am so disgusted with this topic that I could JUST SPIT! Sitting there in your comfortable home without a care in the world and you state that you are not amused... "not amused" at a man throwing shoes at your husband as a show of complete disdain at the thousands of Iraqis AND Americans being killed in his country in the name of Democracy. That is truly one of the most hypocritcal comments that I have ever heard uttered from the lips of a first lady! It just shows how very out of touch she and her family are at the plight of other people the world over... not to mention the people in the military fighting for her Husband's idiotic war! She has not the slightest idea of what this war has done to the world... and she is worried about a couple of shoes thrown as a demonstration of the freedom of speech which comes with a democracy!. Sure it is not like our demonstrations... it is a different culture... with different ways of showing contempt!

What price Democracy? It saddens me so greatly to hear the Bushs spin this as a war for Democracy.... this is a personal war between Saddam Hussein and the Bush Family .... over OIL! Saddam Hussein lost... the rest of us here and in Iraq will be paying for it forever! No one has won.... and probably never will. Come now... let's look the truth in the face and call it as we see it! As my old daddy used to say, "If the truth hurts... let it hurt!"

If the Bushs truly wanted to believe it was the growing pangs of a democracy that THEY have been fighting for... then they should show the Mercy of a Democracy and condemn the horrible beating the man took and ask for mercy for him and his family. These stupid comments from the First Lady will probably be a license to beat the man to death in or out of prison. I am saddened by the pure hypocracy of the Bushs....

Why not give the man a Pardon, Mr. Bush, that would be the act of a merciful President of a Democracy!

~Honey~   December 28th, 2008 9:51 pm ET

Honestly if he really wanted to hit Bush he would have but I think he knew the penalty for him would be far greater so he missed on purpose...I don't wish for Bush to be hurt but it's time to go...time for him to get out of the white house...his reighn is over and now it's time fore some sunshine :) OBAMA!

I pity America, a country that has citizens that can leave so many emotional responses to this. You people need to work on your emotional problems first, then maybe you can post here.

I am not proud of my country if it is represented by people on both sides of the political aisle such as is illustrated here.

Dave, Illinois   December 28th, 2008 9:44 pm ET

So, "Gay Marrage", for somebody (guy, gal, thing, or whatever you are) who likes to throw around the "idiot" label, you might want to spell your own alias correctly first. It kinda makes you look like the idiot. I think what you might be babbling about is that you cannot wait another 4 weeks. Well, neither can I – every problem in the world will then be Obama's fault just like everything for the last 8 years was Bush's.

David Smith   December 28th, 2008 9:44 pm ET

Jermaine   December 28th, 2008 9:44 pm ET

Honestly if he would of thrown that at Saddam he would of been killed. instead he gets a court date, not bad. There are pros and cons to every country. America has killed innocent people and if you don't know this your lost. Being a journalist and a Muslim he has seen first hand the destruction that has taken place. Bottom line is Iraq never deserved to be attacked and people are upset about this. If Americans would try to understand other people instead of just yourself then we could avoid this. In Islam it is considered very bad to start a war without cause and innocent blood is bad to.

Dear Richard Rhode,

It sounds like you are jealous of the fact that a black man was able to actually achieve the American dream before you. If that's the case then you should just say so and be open with your bigotry. It's clear from your sentence structure that you are not an educated man. Try that first. Learn how to read and right fluently, organize your thoughts in a sensible fashion, then go out there and actually do something useful like making a community a better place. Maybe then people will begin to take you seriously and the doors will begin to open for you. On the other hand an education may turn you into one of those nasty socialist liberals like me. On second thought, it's probably more convenient for you to just be ignorant and angry.

If the I raqi "shoe thrower" is free to express himself, then he should be allowed go home scot-free without any incarceration or trial!

Putting the Iraqi "show thrower" under incarceration & trial in a "freedom of speech" new Iraq is equally the same as being "executed" under saddam's regime!

GW Bush Iraq is far more worse than Saddam's Iraq – the millions of innocent Iraqis killed during GW unjust war & occupation is far more greater than those killed under saddam!

BLOOD FOR OIL IS NOT FREEDOM – go figure!!!!!

Mark, B'ham., Al.   December 28th, 2008 9:22 pm ET

Well, it di show freedom of speech and freedom of the press which would have not happened under Saddam. PS a couple of weeks ago I did see the bias of the press again when CNN called the Obama Inaguration "the Peoples' Inauguration", every Presidential Inaguration in America is " the Peoples Inauguration"! Even Bush's and Clinton's Inaguration were "The People Inaguration".

The latest crime that I am aware of is the murder of their long time Republi-con IT guy,
Mike Connell. His was about to accept immunity for he and his wife to tell what they know. His attorneys had asked for both state and federal protection for him, which was turned down,and he cancelled two trips on his piper because it appeared tampered with. He did finally fly to Washington DC and on nthe way back his plane crashed 3 miles short of the runway and was killed. His honest testimony would have put more of the crime family behind bars for a VERY lone time. They simply killed him.

I think, if anything, President Bush may have helped us historically by pushing a lot of programs to the breaking point as well as the economy and forcing us as a country and government to re-evaluate why our fiscal decisions have given us a slight resemblance to the Weimar Republic, the Athenian state and the fall of Rome as well. History repeats itself. I don't think there's any administration that can, even in an 8 year period, fix anything. If you want to point fingers then let's blame Nixon for going off the gold standard in 1971.

I am not a Bush supporter either but I think he deserves some respect. But I cannot blame the reporter as well because of what Bush did to Iraq and Afghanistan. It was not right. Neither did he have any right to invade these countries perishing the lives of women, children and even young American soldiers.

Nevertheless, that wasn't a proper venue neither a proper manner to impart a message to a foreign leader. Especially to a president. It may be humorous to some and Bush just laughed it off. But it isn't really fair at all.

I am a Democrat and I still think it was disrespectful to have a shoe thrown by a journalist. I don't think places with atrocious policies towards women and children should then have a man disrespecting our current leader. My mom and grandma used to sing a song that lyrics read "sweep around your own front door, before you try to sweep around mine." I think perhaps their people should show each other respect before deciding that others are disrespectful. I don't agree with almost anything Bush does but he is still the President. Who the hek is that man, probably a typical misogynist in that country, to throw something at our leader? I am not a Bush fan, but he needs to play basketball the way he was dodging and fakin' to get away from that shoe!

You can't say it wasn't me and point to everyone in your cabinet or people outside your policy. Instead leadership is best when a person is able to influence by the policies prevailed.

Bush failed in the key area of the word, President. Defined as: "The highest executive officer of a modern republic, as the Chief Executive of the United States. An officer appointed or elected to preside over an organized body of persons. The chief executive of the United States, serving as both chief of state and chief political executive. Officer in charge of the Continental Congress. The office of the United States head of state. A protector; a guardian; a presiding genius."

These words of tears cannot mix with oil. Bush has failed.

And I will say it again:

Benjamin Franklin, one of the founding fathers of the US, stated unequivocally, "Those who would give up essential liberty, to purchase a little temporary safety, deserve neither liberty nor safety." His statement is a powerful testimony that giving up freedom to protect it is not wise nor patriotic. AGAIN nor patriotic. Even Benjamin knew when a light bulb didn't come on it meant failure. Benjamin well he was different, he knew how to learn from its failure instead of being obstinate. And if I was correct even God knew when pharaoh of Egypt was being obstinate.

Leave the Military out of this, the People will take care of them for life...period.

Bush is a failure.

I wouldn't be amused if somebody threw a shoe at my spouse either. I, like many of you, was shocked that OUR President had that happen to him. I'm not a fan of his, but I couldn't imagine anyone doing that. It was very disrespectful.

G.W. Bush's visit to Iraq was an insult to the Iraq's people at the time
when their PM was faced with decent in Parliament about American forces staying in Iraq 3 more years (2011) instead of pulling out of Iraq as ASP !?
His advisor and president Bush have poor judgment if they could not see what was coming.

Stephen Eutsey   December 28th, 2008 8:06 pm ET

That's highly ironic considering the fact that she was amused when Bush's dog bit the reporter's hand and drew blood a few weeks back.

SN   December 28th, 2008 8:06 pm ET

Haha. Hilarious that Missy says it's a sign of freedom of speech. Um it's a sign that Iraquis hate Bush for ever starting a war over alledged womd killing innocent peeps and destroying their country. I don't think all the zillions we put to that war (and not to our own country which put us where we are now with record layoffs and collapse) that anyone can say there is any success with that decision of his in 2003. Bush is dumb. Good riddance dumbo. Thank you for leaving your people that you are supposed to think of first close to the streets. Dumb azz. I hope karma gets you good!!

As a matter of fact they are in alot better position financially then most of our citizens, go figure!

why would she be amused it was her husband the shoe was being thrown at get past your hatred for President Bush he will finally now go down in history as a liberator, hero, and most importantly a great President during some of the toughest times for decades. Bush hasn't even had time to get under the desk with his intern! Oh wait Iforgot he has morals and respect for his wife, country, and the white house

Ron from Baltimore   December 28th, 2008 7:54 pm ET

Mrs. Bush, in putting out her unnecessary "I am not amused" statement, has sentenced Mr. al-Zaidi to torture and likely an early death. He was expressing his desolation at the deaths of at least seven of his family members, along with many friends and neighbors-in the name of getting Hussein out of power.

Mrs. Bush, this is your own "Bring'em on" pronouncement, and will not help the situation. What a totally useless, thoughtless, vindictive piece of tripe! I dearly hope we are not seeing y our true colors here-condemning a sad man to a life of hell at the hands of the thugs who already broke his arm and several ribs.

What were you thinking??

I would submit that all of the young men and women that were maimed in Iraq were "not amused" at the loss of there limbs due to a war your lying husband started.

Laura, you silly republican nincompoop, go back to Dallas and the "ladies that lunch" crowd! Join a garden club and hope some one names a rose after you as your legacy.

Only the Bushes. Only they would try to spin this into a positive: "Well, see; They're free to express themselves now. Had we not gone there – spending trillions of dollars and murdering thousands of American troops and innocent Iraqis – Saddam would have killed this man." Okay, first of all, Saddam hated Bush, so he would not have killed the journalist, he would have given him a gold medal. God I can't wait 'til January 20. Bush will burn in hell for the immoral attrocities he's done.

Many of us are appreciative of the fine example and wonderful works of our First Lady.

Charles from Atlanta   December 28th, 2008 7:46 pm ET

Well.. think about from Iraqi side.. No one knows how many Iraqi died because of this war. Many Iraqi became refugees. Yes Saddam Hussein is a dictator. But dictator is different than terrorist. And it needs to fight differently. Historian still cannot settle the true objective of war on Iraq. We do hope Iraq become a democratic country with freedom and prosperity. But even that will not help Bush's legacy because of poor management after major conflict finished.

This is frightening because what will they do to Obama when he disappoints them?

CNN.........2 words. NO DUH Why would someone be amused by someone throwing shoes at their husband trying to hurt him? for real, shouldn't this be an obvious one?

Jeffrey   December 28th, 2008 7:41 pm ET

I think Mrs. Bush is pretty delusional. As a result of the Iraq war close to 100,000 civilians have died. How much more "free" are they than they were under Saddam? And look, if someone threw a shoe or two at someone here in the states I don't think they'd face 2 years in prison. If she thinks this guy deserves that sentence, she's as demented as her warmonger husband.

chris@stl   December 28th, 2008 7:39 pm ET

I respect the office of Presidency, and I believe every one should even though the person occupying the position is not worthy to be the president. That's the American value.

However, I look at this incidence from a different angle .... from the Iraqi's position. Imagine how frustrated the ordinary citizens are so as to risk their lives and commit to acts like this. Try to understand the frame of mind of the person and the reason why he decided to trow shoes at our president. I'm sure there are millions of people who would want to do some thing similar but do not have the guts to do it!

I am in NO way a Bush fan. However, he is our President and it is unfortunate the people of the middle east do not respect us or him. Throwing a shoe at President Bush is such a sign of disrespect for the entire US. What ashame – all we have done for them and all the lives lost for this showing of disrespect by the backwards people.

joe   December 28th, 2008 7:31 pm ET

Barb   December 28th, 2008 7:28 pm ET

I have never supported George Bush and I feel he stole the office of President. Just to place this in perspective. I want to express my outrage at the man who threw shoes as a way to insult George Bush. Bush is the POTUS. Period. He represents our country. We may not like that but there it is.

D.Tin   December 28th, 2008 7:23 pm ET

Although I am no fan of Bush, the shoe throwing incident is not one to be taken lightly. How did his security team allow this to happen twice, where was the Secret Service Agent -"throwing himself in front of the president to protect him?" They failed miserably and should be replaced. Good thing Bush is a practiced "dodger" and shows that he can take care of himself.

Elliot   December 28th, 2008 7:22 pm ET

Bush is responsible for hundreds of thousands of deaths in Iraq, so being called a 'dog' and getting a couple shoes tossed at him is just the beginning of what he deserves.

For all the people who think it was a bad thing to do, just ask yourself:

Would it have been bad if it was Adolph Hitler?

Whoever answers that question 'yes' can maintain their position, but like it or not Bush IS a modern-day Hitler; he was just too stupid and incompetent to be as successful as Hitler, despite all the power we have here in America.

Janet   December 28th, 2008 7:19 pm ET

Laura Bush has been a very refined, controlled First Lady through all of her husbands mistakes, stupid remarks and offensive actions in the past 8 years. No, Mrs. Bush, it is not you who we dislike. It is the idiot you married. Please, get him to more AA Meetings so he can remember what it is like to be part of a solution and not part of the problem. He should not be allowed to think for himself. I have often wondered how he slept at night

Mark from New York   December 28th, 2008 7:18 pm ET

In response to Dave from Illinois:

Ofcourse what you said is all true but bush's fault was going to Iraq in the first place. To be honest I agree this isn't about popularity contest but to anyone who says Bush kept us safe, I say he has kept us in danger ever since Shock & Awe and it'll catch up eventually. What obama will do differently is finish the osama bin laden war and extremists.

Lara   December 28th, 2008 7:14 pm ET

He never even ducked. As if he was expecting it. Also, the man threw 2 shoes. The secret service was slow to move in. As if they new it wasn't a real threat. The whole act was staged just like every other staged and preplanned incidents since this man became president. How stupid the general public is to believe whatever is cooked up by the media to get people emotional. Good grief.

Bill in Ct.   December 28th, 2008 7:14 pm ET

That guy should have pull a gun out and shot that idiot. That report lost family members b/c of that idiot Bush. He lied about Iraq and thousands of people of lost their lives b/c of him, but Laura doesn't care about that, all she cares about is, someone threw a shoe at that killer(Bush). For all you idiots out here who allowed this administration to get away with murder, our rights being taking away, throwing innocent people in jail without any trails or just bringing the people to a court room, I say to you you're just as guilty as them. This country has laws and under this administration, there were no laws. They broke every law on the books and got away with it.

Texas Teacher   December 28th, 2008 7:13 pm ET

Poor Pres. Bush... poor Laura Bush.... not amused.... I suspect the man's family was not amused either with the beating their family received. I suspect this is form of showing disdain that just might be understood there, but not here. I'm not condoning the act. But I am not offended as an American. I know enough about other cultures to know that the man in question was insulting Bush, not the people of this country. He most surely would have thrown shoes at the American Flag, not Bush.

What about a little mercy for the immerging democracy that Bush is so proud of. Wouldn't that mercy show more to the Iraqis about what a true Democracy is capable of than an unmerciful beating and possibility of 2 years of Prison? But, no, Mrs Bush is not amused. :(

stephanie   December 28th, 2008 7:12 pm ET

By all means bash whom ever you want, be spiteful and judgemental.I too did not vote for President Bush but, as american I am not only appalled that he was insulted over seas but, more appalled by the negative response from his nation. It seems to me that not one of has been in mans shoe for last 8 years, it easy to blame one man, when as citizens of a wonderful country we dint make ourselves heard until now. We have gone along with what has been told to you through the airways and print. Have you ever thought about writing your own congressman or representatve, probably not.Its always easier to complain after the animals are loose and the barn door is closed. Just think what this country would have been if we did nothing after 9/11.

jlc   December 28th, 2008 7:11 pm ET

I am not a fan of Bush! As a matter of I fact, I worked and donated to the Obama campaign. I detest his policies and thank God his term is almost over, but I was pissed when I heard and watched the tape of the the "shoe" incident. It was a serious disrespect to The President; The office and the USA.

What about the military men and women currently serving in that country and probably is protecting the "shoe thrower" rights to hurl shoes at World Leaders!

Where is the heck was the secret service. Everytime I think about this incident it makes my blood boil What nerve!!

I know Laura loves her husband, but, he is the worst president in the history of the world.
I've never seen people so down and out, so hateful, so fearful, so scared, or so mean as they are now.
Our country is in shambles and its due to the republican party.

Shoes vs Bombs   December 28th, 2008 7:07 pm ET

What a democracy we have created. A guy who throws shoes on a president goes to jail and a president who throws bombs and kills more than 200,000 Iraqi civilians is looking for a little crack to enter the history books.

Janet   December 28th, 2008 7:07 pm ET

It is too bad that the journalist missed the president with his shoe. What a sad country when we have to cheer on an outsider to do something we
Americans have been wanting to do for 8 years. George Bush is a disgrace as a president. As for being athletic? Mabye in his dreams!
Personally, I am so ready for CHANGE and I pray that Obama can help us change this country to where we are, again, at the top of the food chain, so to speak.

Josh   December 28th, 2008 7:06 pm ET

I am not a supporter of George W. Bush and I feel he was not that great of a President for America. However, he is still our American President and to have someone throw shoes at him is disrepectful to Americans not just President Bush. Hopefully, America can restore its image and respect with the rest of the world over the next Presidency because this is just pure madness.

Rachel   December 28th, 2008 7:04 pm ET

I can't believe how many of you feel it's okay that guy hucked two shoes at a visiting President. What fools you all are...

How Very Sad   December 28th, 2008 6:47 pm ET

How sad it is from reading these posts how many fair weather Americans there are. I don't care if you voted for him or not he was and still is your president.

I can't believe how many people here are on the side of America's enemies.

Even Charles Rangel defended Bush when Chavez insulted him.

I don't agree with Bush but he is our elected leader untill Obama takes office. Have some respect for your country and the Presidents office.

I got news for you. Obama is an American first and foremost so I guess you will hate him too.

Karen - Missouri   December 28th, 2008 6:43 pm ET

While Bush was not the best President, the incident shows how some in Iraq and others around the world just have a total lack of respect and only show violence as an answer. If that had happened here, the world would be calling for swift and heavy discipline. Childish behavior as far as I'm concerned. Laura Bush is right.

Perhaps this shoe throwing will catch on in America. It seems benign and appropriate that Bush be shoed whenever and wherever he shows his smirking face. This should be done in honor of all the brave Americans, military and innocent civilians he has murdered in Iraq and elsewhere. Getting "Shoed" is better than he deserves.

bob   December 28th, 2008 6:36 pm ET

Dear Laura are you and George back to smoking that funny stuff you liked so well. I think there are millions that wished they could have thrown a shoe at your husband. He is and never was my President and never represented me in the world. His fascist government should be tried in a world court for their war crimes. And for Rice and her interview just shows how stupid she is. By the way what did she or the administration ever accomplish but pain and hatred any where in the world? Rice has no winning strategy to write about. We are hated around the world because of the fascist government you people brought to Washington. GOOD RIDENCE!!

Darrin Nielsen   December 28th, 2008 6:35 pm ET

What a joke. George Bush's actions have lead to the killing of thousands of Iraqi's and Laura Bush raises a stink about this man who throws a shoe at GWB in protest for all the killing, grief and sadness he has brought to the Iraqis. Hardly a fair payback. What a distorted world view.

If this is the change that was voted for , hatred and bigotry, I am ashamed not of my country, but of my fellow Americans.

John   December 28th, 2008 6:32 pm ET

I hope Obama gives Al-Zaidi the Presidential Medal of Freedom. What better way to acknowledge a change of course away from US sponsored terrorism and toward a lawful and moral administration. Even better, when Obama awards this medal, he should also announce that he is turning Bush over to the International Criminal Court to stand trail for war crimes and crimes against humanity.

geen   December 28th, 2008 6:31 pm ET

hey laura..yer married to the moron..you have to love him...the iraqi who threw the shoe at that moron yer married to, didn't throw it, per se, at the President of the United States...he threw it at george bush, to whom you have the misfortune of being married to...and, realizing that your thinking is necessarily skewed by being around that idiot for the greater part of your life...we show the same disrespect to leaders of other countries...president of iran came to this country couple of years ago and your moron said nothing when he was met with jeers from crowds...where was your moron's regime, then...if he isn't respected in this country, where 80% of the population anxiously anticipates and can hardly await 12:00 noon on the 20th of next month, what makes you think that any Iraqi, not just the one who threw the shoe at your moron, should thank him for killing 10's of thousands of his fellow iraqis in an illegal and continuing invasion and occupation of their country....I wish you the best Mrs. Bush...as for your husband..I don't really wish him ill..I just don't care...

pro   December 28th, 2008 6:30 pm ET

Unfortunately, Laura bush is shamelessly delusional like her shameless husband.

I would like the American public to hang their old torn shoes on the each spike around the white house to give them a cold send off for the history to admire. Do not waste a good shoe he is not worth it.

Dee   December 28th, 2008 6:30 pm ET

It is not surprising that some men have sold their consience to the devil. Listen to these brainles and sightless folks like Mrs. Bush and Condolessa Rice and their vague imaginations of a waisted 8 years in office. History will never, and I say never, forgive this President and his cohorts for their attrocities against mankind. It will be worthwile for them to retire in shame to a lonely island where their utopian dreams of a democratic middle-east can be realised.

Bush came to office when world was burning before terrorists. Explosions in air, water and land around the world were becoming a culture of our world.
Today, such explosions are reduced becuase of war Bush carried out.
What can a president do if he/she confronted by such risk? Fight ot yield.
Today, Russia is putting Stalin as hero

Chelle   December 28th, 2008 6:27 pm ET

I see the act of an Iraqi reporter throwing shoes at President Bush as an insult to all Americans. I don't agree with much of the policies and decisions that President Bush have made. However, the fact of the matter is that we have made many sacrifices-financial, political and in blood to help build their nation. The very shoes that the reporter have even become popular. This reporter's actions are praised by the Iraqi people. How dare they insult us. We really need to get out of Iraq. The people dont want us there. Interesting how one bites the hand that feeds it.

Humored in Texas   December 28th, 2008 6:22 pm ET

I'm sure the family of Michael Denton Douglas wasn't "humored" when Laura killed him with her car at avery familiar interesection. Right, Laura?!

Karen   December 28th, 2008 6:18 pm ET

First Lady Laura Bush said that although she “wasn’t amused” when an Iraqi journalist threw shoes at her husband, she sees the incident as a sign that “Iraqis feel a lot freer to express themselves.”

Wow, the first lady is a moron as well as a murderer. I also like how later she basically says "oh tee hee it was a silly incident BUT I THINK WE SHOULD PUNISH THAT DOG DEATH PENALTY OH YES."

Greg in Denver   December 28th, 2008 6:17 pm ET

Well Laura, I don't think the Iraqi people are amused at the large numbers of innocent women and children that lost their lives because of your husband. So, you're "not amused." You should be thankful that not being amused is the worst of your problems. Because Lord knows, your husband has certainly caused a lot of problems and heartache for a lot of other people.

Tracy   December 28th, 2008 6:12 pm ET

I have one question – what does she think should happen to the Secret Service who allowed the man to throw not one but two shoes at the President before he was stopped?

Shake The Baby!   December 28th, 2008 6:08 pm ET

Laura may not be amused by the shoe-throwing incident, but the rest of the world sure was.

Laura, George, Dick, and all of the rest of the Bush administration need to come out from their cozy protective shells every now and then see how their decisions have affected the whole world. The need to understand the lives they have taken and the lives they have ruined.

They live in this fantasy world where their decisions have no consequences and their lies sound believable.

Wake up, Laura. Your husband is a moron, few respect him, and even fewer like him.

Free al-Zaidi and even give the guy a medal. He deserves it. He gave Bush the most visible and most deserved insult ever. It was just as deserved as the guy in New Orleans telling Cheney what he could do with himself. Nobody was hurt and the guy said something that needed to be said or Bush would continue to live in his little plastic bubble of self-delusion.

JB   December 28th, 2008 6:08 pm ET

As I said before all you far left loonies who think the shoe throwing incident was good or funny. You reap what you sow. Shoe throwing and denegrating the president is now on the table for ALL presidents including Obama. You are bringing politics to a lower level, and righties have the right to denegrate the president the way you do.

dan mckeown   December 28th, 2008 6:08 pm ET

i laughed and laughed after hearing this. "as you know he's a natural athlete" Hilarious. The egotism that has surrounded Bush at every waking moment is responsible for convincing him that his foolish tendencies are somehow majestic.

PhilT   December 28th, 2008 6:04 pm ET

@Sammy: You said – "It was downright insulting. I was utterly shocked."

What is downright insulting to me and a majority of Americans is the legacy George W. Bush and his administration is leaving behind. The country is in ruins under his watch.

I am utterly shocked, and hope they will not get away with it.

catmom   December 28th, 2008 5:50 pm ET

Southern, if Republicans had not spent the past eight years covering for Bush perhaps he would have been prosecuted. Talk about gutless, liars and accomplices, that would be the Republican congress. They have spent the past eight years covering for Bush and his administration and Pelosi and Reid knew they had absolutely no chance of bringing this administration up on charges.

As for Laura Bush and her defense of W...You poor lady. To have to be beholden to that person and defend his persona because some one threw a shoe at his worthless self, you have my condolances. I personally thought it was a real hoot and LMAO every time I seen the scene replayed and replayed on the news.

Yes I agree it is sad that the President of this United States is thought of so badly by people in a country (that we invaded) that the citizens of that country wanted to give our President a most vile of insults.

But, what the hey, if he was in his own country and certain people could get to him, I would say he would get a lot more then two shoes thrown (or aimed) at him.

SO Laura, chin up lady, you'll be out of the White House soon and you can go EVERYWHERE without W, he can stay at his little house on the prarie and chat with his friends from the oil companys, and you can live in big D without him... Won't that be wonderful.

Would you admire an American reporter who did the same to a visiting leader from another country here?
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
So hypothetically, Americans should respect a Foreign Head of State who would hold a press conference to boast of the success of his invasion of the United States; and the murder of three quarters of a million American women and children?
People who stand in self-righteousness and say things like "I hope you burn in hell" or "I look to God to mete out punishment and I hope it's a doozy" are hypocrites. If you call yourselves Christians and this is what proceeds out of your mouth, no wonder people want less and less to do with "Christianity".
If any of you actually read your bibles, you would see that your own judgments condemn YOU, while you vainly call down God's vengeance on your neighbor.
If you do not forgive others, why do you expect God to forgive you?
Texas Teacher   December 28th, 2008 5:39 pm ET
Who is amused? Must be a very stupid person. I am glad the President was not hurt. The journalist could have written all he could write about liking or not liking Bush. To ambush the president in this manner is absolutely unacceptable. He should get what is legally right as his punishment.
Roland in St George, UT   December 28th, 2008 5:30 pm ET
You're so right, Mrs. Bush. If the reporter disagreed with your husband, then what that he should have done is waited until Bush's car was stopped at a railroad crossing and then he should have "accidentally" rear-ended Bush's car, pushing it onto the train track just as the train came. Is that the way you would have handled it?
Dr. Nerd   December 28th, 2008 5:29 pm ET
Just think what would have happened if the shoes were thrown at Sadam... He would have been shot and then his family shot.
The fact that something like a first amendment expression of freedom of speech is a perfect example of how successful our reforms in Iraq have been.
I haven't always liked Bush but I'm not gone condemn him either, history will tell whether he was right or wrong and we're ignorant to make the decision so soon. American's have become bitter and sniveling and I got out of the Army because I was tired of defending them. Let the country rot to its own vices I'm tired of the leftist smearing of the this land. It wasn't Islamists or Communists that brought us to our knees, just unappreciative Americans who were born with silver spoons in their mouth.
There are million ways to express your view, throwing shoes is not one of them. Shoe throwing is an act of violence and to throw show at president Bush is an insult to the people of the United States.
never let anyone disrespect the president of United States
This guy does NOT represent "the hearts of the Iraqui people." If you would ever watch anything but CNN - or the other ultra left news organizations, you would see Iraquis speaking out to reporters about how happy and hopeful they are about their country's future without Saddam. Dear MrsLaura Bush: The shoe incident in Iraq might not have amused you. It did not amuse me either. I still feel it was the height of idiocy for Pre. Bush to visit that country; what did he think? He would get a hero's welcome for "liberating" them? It boils down to this. It was Aa showoff visit by a lame duck pesident who caused the invasion, occupation, death and torture of Iraqi people including our soldiers,all in the name of democracy. He sould be punished a lot more severely than by a shoe beating
I think every American family who lost a soldier in the Bush/Cheney Iraq War Lie or who had a soldier come home maimed or mentally damaged should go throw their soldier's boots on the Bush front lawn at the their new home in Dallas.
Bush and Cheney are war criminals and deserve much worse than having shoes thrown at them. They should be tried at the International World Court at the Hague, found guilty of war crimes against Iraq and sent to prison for the rest of their lives. They lied to the UN. They lied to Congress.They lied to the American people.
They broke the law by igorning the law on torture set forth by the Geneva Convention.
They should be tried, sent to jail, and lose be fined for every dead Iraqi and every dead American and Coalition soldier such that they are bankrupted and lose all government benefits and pensions.
Bush and Cheney are a disgrace to this nation and have destroyed our economy, our government trust, violated our Constitution, committed crimes against humanity by torture, and lied to the world whenever it suited their interests. They are international criminals and deserve no mercy, no pardons, and should live the rest of their lives in poverty in jail.
Tammy   December 28th, 2008 4:34 pm ET
I am so upset that this happened to our President. I happen to like our President, as he knows what he is doing, strategically in the middle east. And our troops like their leader also. I was wondering, where was the Secret Service? Why were they so slow to respond to the shoe. If that were a bullet, they would have been fired from the Secret Service. Unacceptable!
Alex   December 28th, 2008 4:32 pm ET
The shoe-thrower faces two years in prison? That is a "free society"?
Richard Rohde   December 28th, 2008 4:32 pm ET
The insults and slams that are hurled at Ms. Bush are beyond belieft. Some real repugnant people out there in socialist land. Don't say a thing bad about Blago, Rangel, Frank,. Pelosi or Reid, but attack this poor woman. What a shame this party has bamboozled the american people in to getting a thug from Chicago elected. Hussein the great community organize with less than 4 years as a senator has a $2 million house in Chicago and is currentyly staying in a $9 million one in Hawaii. I can't afford a house or a vacation like that but, then again I didn't promise the corrupt unions I would give them everything they want. Illinois politico, endorsed Blago twice, sure there is no corruption.
sarah   December 28th, 2008 4:32 pm ET
I think Mrs. Bush realizes what few Americans seem to, that throwing anything at the President of the United States is an insult to every American. Regardless of what most people seem to think about Bush, Congress has a big hand in our national problems and while Bush will soon be gone, Congress is still there. Consider this, the second most supported Democratic candidate for President (and member of Congress) bears responsibility for Iraq and now, incredibally, she is Secretary of State! Can Obama offer real change if he only resuffles the same old lawmakers?
Bush invaded their Country for no reason, do you understand that or do you have no reasoning abilities due to GOP brainwashing? Stay off the kool aid, read, inform yourself, and come and tell us if you really still believe your own bs.
Laura Bush is not blameless, she's a billionaire because of his policies and she probably hoped that the shoe hit him square and rendered him even more brain dead than he his now so she wouldn't have to put up with him for another 30 years. I bet she believes the best iraqi is not a free one but a dead one, and he killed a lot of innocents worst first lady ever so it's a matching pair
Getting rid of Saddam has done nothing! Iraqis are still prisoners in their own country. U.S interference is the cause of the countries problems. Saddam was only in power because of the US interference to begin with!
Bush received what he deserved. He is not the cause of Freedom of Iraq. Brave men and women do these things no matter what the situation is.
Sorry to disagree with you but he didn't represent me. I didn't vote for him and not once in 8 years did he do anything I wanted. Nope, the shoe throwing incident was an expression of what that particular individual thought of George W. Bush, . . . and frankly, I agree with him!
Jeff in AZ   December 28th, 2008 4:18 pm ET
Dear Laura, Muntadhar al-Zaidi should be and given a medal. He did what a lot of Americans would like to do to your husband. I hope he comes to my neck of the woods one day, I'll be throwing more than shoes, and we can see his athletic ability. We all know he has no cerebral ability.
PJP   December 28th, 2008 4:17 pm ET
For all of you that blame Bush for the war, you do realize that we have a voluntary enlistment, don't you? Nobody has made anyone enlist in the military. But we have been blessed with lots of men and women enlisting on their on. Yes, I know that many of them have been killed, but be thankful for the ones that have come home. You do know that death can come at any time, wether is be at home or in war. I know most of you just want to blame someone for all the bad around us. Well, then go look in the mirror and ask yourself, or God, how can you make a difference. If you will listen hard enough, He will tell you!!!!
I agree with Mrs. Bush (and feel bad for her).
All said and done, you respect the Chair even if you do not respect or agree with the person sitting in it.
In this case, it is the President of a nation. I don't think it was proper for the reporter to throw anything, leave alone a shoe, at President Bush. It was downright insulting. I was utterly shocked.
What was more disheartening is the fact that the press made light of the issue. This whole episode was disgusting. Shows how much respect the so-called free Iraqis are capable of showing.
No matter what people think, they don't know the whole story and even though I don't know the whole story either, I believe Pres Bush is not as criminal as a lot of people think he is. I will say, I was very disapointed when he did say he did not take the Bible literally. But neither has a lot of presidents and neither is the one coming in. I wish we as American's would have prayed for Mr Bush like the Bible tells us to, but we failed and for that I am sorry.
Have a good retirement.
Marilyn, Powell Ohio   December 28th, 2008 4:09 pm ET
I felt sadness for the United States that shoes were thrown at our president because he is so disliked, especially in the Middle East. Laura Bush has campaigned for her husband and tried to legitimize every dastardly act he has commited during the past eight years. How many thousands of innocent children have been killed (women and men also) for Bush to "set them free"? Why go on and on? We Americans (majority) know that Bush and Company have taken our great country down a path of destruction. Good riddance to all the Bushes, Cheneys and their cronies who helped with the deeds.
Southern   December 28th, 2008 4:08 pm ET
Where does that leave you and the rest of the democrats?
Since no charges have been brought.......you are either accomplices or liars. Or just possibly gutless pussies.........
Please, pray tell why hasn't your Vice President Elect brought charges?
(I won't question Obama, he was such a junior senator he wasn't expected to do anything.........And he didn't.
Why hasn't the speaker of the House?
How about Senator "the war is lost" Reid?
Gutless?
Liars?
Accomplices?
What is it to be...........
Please tell us what your representatives are?
Or is it that no presidential war crimes have been committed?
Brian   December 28th, 2008 4:07 pm ET
He didn't throw the shoe because the Iraqis feel alot freer. That has to be to stupidest thing I have ever heard. Obviously this guy speaks for a great number of people living in that country. Just because the media is shutting out the reception that the Iraqi people gave this man, doesn't change the fact it wasn't welcomed. Face it, they don't want us there. Bush's legacy cannot be saved. The history books will call him our worst president. Nothing can change that.
JKB   December 28th, 2008 4:06 pm ET
Bushy deserves everything he gets. I can't wait until he disappears. Instead of overseeing his library being built, he should volunteer at Walter Reed and see the irreversable damage that he has caused first hand. Maybe he could help someone learn how to walk or talk again. But since his presidency is up, he can just walk away and hopefully not with a clear conscience. Condi thinks that people will soon be thanking him for his 8 yrs, but I NEVER will. Is everyone in Bush's cabinet disillusional? Unbelievable. Good riddance Bushy, job not well done.
Carol McFarlane   December 28th, 2008 4:06 pm ET
It's interesting that Mrs. Bush speaks as if she wishes the journalist DID get his just desserts (under Saddam Hussein), yet the murdered Iraqi leader was OUR target! Ah, Laura, you and the rest of you can't have it both ways. At least that's ALL that Iraqis have done to us, while we felt free to invade their country and ruin their culture, in addition to the deaths of over 100,000 Iraqis and the barbaric end to their leader. We have demonstrated far more primitive behavior, on the international scene, by unilaterally meting out justice, and in such a horrific way. Let's see, what was this all about? To bring democracy to Iraq, to punish Al Qaeda, to put an end to a dictator??? It's SOOOOO confusing, the many reasons we invaded Iraq and did what we did. I'm surprised that Mr. Bush can safely move about anywhere in the Middle East or in Muslim countries. He is fortunate indeed that all he got was a pair of shoes flung at him. That was MUCH more civilized than what we did to and in Iraq.
Cathy R., Philadelphia, PA   December 28th, 2008 4:06 pm ET
Of course Laura Bush would say that. Her husband's lies about WMD, incursion into Iraq, mental retardation with regard to Katrina, dumbfoundedness as our economy, including loss of jobs, spiraled into a deeper recession, and the TARP bailout, it's a wonder she can sleep at night while he's snoring in blissful ignorance.
My God, she probably tells GW he can dance and sing! Stand by your man Laura, as P-E Obama begins the long process of cleaning up this mess.
B.Real   December 28th, 2008 4:05 pm ET
She should be happy he's being tortured then in post-Saddam Iraq.
Bob Reynolds   December 28th, 2008 4:05 pm ET
Hey Bush Bashers! Like it or not, this country was safer because of Bush's policies. He took action against a dictator when no one else in the world was willing to because they were actively selling military hardware and technology to the Sadam Insane regime. The Arabs and other Muslim nations, Europeans, and the Russians didn't care, and with the exception of a few European leaders still don't care enough to risk thier men and women in uniform to keep communist and other dictatorships from attacking other nations in the world. I don't see any of you Bush Bashers complaining about Obama's agenda to double the troop stregnth, to impliment a surge in Afganistan. Not that I don't support our new Commander in Chief, but Gee, I wonder where Obama got that idea?
Sunny   December 28th, 2008 4:03 pm ET
I didn't vote for either of the Bushs; I was and am very much against this war in Iraq. HOWEVER, I do not like anyone throwing shoes at my president. I would not want anyone in this country throwing shoes at a foreign leader who was visiting the U.S. Laura Bush got it right.
You need to stop living in your fantasy world.
I guess you and your husband never care that our soldiers, and
a lot of innocent Iraqi people weren't able to dodge bombs, bullets,
IED's. Thanks to your husband. He wasn't even man enough to
stand there and let one of those shoes hit him. If I were that reporter
I would have brought at least six pairs and kept throwing and throwing
I would have got him.
He is the worst down go home and live out your life with your lying
deceitful husband and go away. We are tired of looking at all
of you and his Administration.
By the way I hope you know that know matter what you say or you
believe God will have the last word on all of you.
Lauren   December 28th, 2008 4:00 pm ET
Sue, and all the other Bush bashers,
Let me ask you this question.
Would you admire an American reporter who did the same to a visiting leader from another country here?
Meaning, if a president or other important person from any other country came to speak to Obama, they held a press conference, and one of CNN or Fox, or MSNBC tossed something at the foreign leader in response to something he or she opposed. Would that be acceptable?
I am not saying Bush is great, or he has done enough to help this country or world, but he does demand a certain amount of respect. WE, the people elected him. Like it or not, he WAS and still is our president at the time of his visit to Iraq.
I agree free spech is important, and the Iraqi reporter had a right to question, drill or even piss of Bush. But there has to be some respect shown.
As far as all of you holding Bush responsible for the countries problems, you know, there are many, many other congressmen and women who have also sat on thier butts watchign this country go down the tubes. And they LET IT HAPPEN. Bush is only one man in a machine called Washington politics.
You can tooss your slams at Bush, but he alone is not the only problem. And it is wrong to show a lack of respect for a leader when on foriegn soil. It would not happen here, a leader can visit and not get anything tossed at him or her,,, why should it happen to Bush?
Bruce   December 28th, 2008 3:58 pm ET
I am more ashamed of so-called americans who like seeing their own president insulted, than I am angry at the shoe-thrower. I would have been angered if he had thrown the shoe at any president, be it Bush, Carter, Reagan, Nixon, Clinton, or anyone else.
You hate-mongers who have nothing but evil to say about our president are helping to make us a nation of sitting ducks who think, since we hate our own leaders, we are prime targets for terrorism and other attacks.
You ought to be ashamed of yourselves for the hate speech. I know I am ashamed of you.
Eric   December 28th, 2008 3:53 pm ET
the ultimate injustice in this situation is that this man whom had the amazing courage to stand up to a dictator and murderer will probably spend a substantial amount of time in prison, while George Bush, Dick Cheney, Karl Rove, etc. will never spend even a day in prison for the heinous crimes they committed. But hey, let's send this guy (Bush) off with a presidential library, lifetime pension, and lifetime health insurance coverage. What a joke!
Texas Teacher   December 28th, 2008 3:50 pm ET
Godluvr.... if it had been an insult to all Americans, the perp would have thrown his shoes at the American Flag. No, this man was showing complete disdain for George Bush! Pure and simple. The fact that he is being reviled as a terrorist does not change the fact that he could have thrown a pipe bomb! Instead he did the most disrespectful thing for his culture. Simply a show of disdain for the man responsible for the horrindous loss of life in his country.
If they had harbored Osama bin Laden, I'm sure they could have handled the war better, perhaps, I don't know. But taking out Saddam Hussein (no matter how horrible the man was) instead of going after bin Laden, must be the ultimate horror we could have demonstrated against his country and people.
What price democracy? How sad for the whole world. And Osama bin Laden is still at large in Afganstan where he has been all along... if there really is such a person. Which I have covered extensively in other article comments. :(
Impeach George W. Bush   December 28th, 2008 3:49 pm ET
FREEMAN   December 28th, 2008 3:49 pm ET
Mrs. Bush is right. It was disrespectful of the journalist to do what he did. But at the same time W deserved it. I wouldn't want W to be seriously hurt but it would have been nice if one of those shoes had hit home.
Sean   December 28th, 2008 3:48 pm ET
Should Laura Bush also not be amused about an economic disaster on her watch? Should Laura Bush not be amused Louisiana still has not recovered from the Insurance schemes of Katrina? Should Laura Bush not be amused health care is up 400% during their campaign? Should Laura Bush no be amused The US Captiol system is now owned by the Federal Reserve? Should Laura Bush not be amused Oil hyper spiked for 6 years compared to the 4 months in the 70's while her husband had the executive order to change it? Should Laura Bush not be amused the largest corruption ever to be witnessed in mans history took place in their cabinet?
Really now Laura Bush, should you have not been amused about a lot over the last 8 years? Just say good bye to the White House and be more concerned your husband is probably going to jail.
This issue is not over. Bush's executive powers are over baby, we are all waiting for the law suits to begin. Don't leave America because we have some not so amusing questions we would like to ask soon.
Don't be Amused Laura Bush, The Yankee's Lawyers are coming, and The People's Amusement is just about to begin!
Let me speak out of turn here and say what Laura Bush was experiencing folks was really what various animals such as a Chip may be perceiving in experiencing amusement, this is simply a case of Laura exhibiting anthropomorphism. Let us all take a more scientific approach while we detail her disdainment (a new Bushie word).
Jen   December 28th, 2008 3:47 pm ET
Who among us would not like to hurl a shoe at Bush? To bad that Bush did not step in and ask that this guy get a fair trial. Instead he has been beaten, forced to write fake apology letters, and will probably do a considerable amount of jail time. I thought we were in Iraq to indoctrinate them to becoming more like us... It seems as though torturing this guy would bring the self rightous religious right out to stand up for his rights.
Barry Ohman   December 28th, 2008 3:45 pm ET
Well Mrs. Bush is as delusional as her husband President George Walker Bush who is perhaps the most hated man in the world after his stupidity of a war in Iraq based on lies. She lives in her Bubble World thinking that her George has done such a great job, while she better wake up as he is the laziest, dumbest, most ignorant and most pathetic President to have ever served the United States.
He deserved to have the shoe thrown at him and to bad it wouldn't have been a size 14 Work Boot and would have hit him in the head, it maybe would have brought him around to the reality of the incident. President George Walker Bush is not only hated by 75% of Americans but more than likely 85% of the rest of the world.
January 20, 2009 can't come fast enough and maybe dear George and his lying Administration will eventually be tried for War Crimes for their starting of an illegal War in Iraq based on lies.
Laura Bush well, as the world knows; Those who cannot teach, become school administrators. And those who cannot teach or administrate, are delegated to simply reading to children in the school library, while being supervised by a Librarian.
To bad President Bush was not smart enough when the first shoe flew in and kept his head down longer. I guess Bush did not have enough time to calculate the math.
Dtoigo   December 28th, 2008 3:38 pm ET
Laura, l thought wise women advice their husbands? Where were you when he did all this evil. Your time is over and even if you sleep in villa's the trueth is , the blood of all the people he has killed will be on your head. The bible says children will be punished from the sins of their parents. Your daughters will pay all this sins or even your grand children. Bush has turned this world into ahorrible place to live. In your bedroom alone with Bush, why didnt you have mother's love and cry to him, please dont go to war? To me, you had achance to stop him but you chose not to. You failed mothers and children. May God help us to forgive you and your bully husband.
Willie McGill   December 28th, 2008 3:36 pm ET
Although numerous people do not agree with President Bush's policies, I certainly believe, as Commander-in Chief, possessed the rights to implement his ideology. Therefore, President Bush's life shoudl not be threatened or his freedom of speech censured. Consequently, I, Willie McGill, like Mrs. Laura Bush, am not amused by the shoe incident. Unfortunately, like the illustrious leadership of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., former President John Fitzgerald Kennedy and former Senator Robert Kennedy, President Bush should stand steadfast to his beliefs regardless of the the opinions of the popular consensus.
Steve   December 28th, 2008 3:35 pm ET
Too bad the shoe didn't hit its target. That blankety-blanket sorry person that got appointed to the Presidency by a Republican-leaning Supreme Court is almost outta there and none too soon. If I had ever voted for him I would just keep my mouth shut rather than show what an ignorant fool I am.
Michael Flanders   December 28th, 2008 3:30 pm ET
Good for Laura Bush for defending her man. She's doing a good job taking the lead on the administration's defense against some of the most disappointing poll results ever and against the overwhelmingly negative sentiments expressed (at home and abroad) about our President and his performance. The First Lady's grace during this difficult period is much more palatable and appreciated than is the continued arrogance of Vice President Cheney, as evidenced during his recent interviews.
I would be surprised, however, if the First Lady really believes all of the things that she's saying these days in defense of her man. For example, does she really believe that George Bush is a "natural athlete", as she stated today? If so, then what would possibly be her basis for this claim (that he is a good runner or bike rider)? In which sports did he ever excel in grade school, high school, prep school, or university?
The reality is that our current President is not a "natural athlete" and he did not regularly compete in athletics (although he had many good opportunities to do so over many years). Why is this false athletic claim important to consider? Because it is one of many examples of a credibility gap, in which false positive attributes are bestowed upon this President.
A free society with open access to good information will eventually punish a candidate or a public official who claims false levels of credibility (whether it be athleticism or military service, or other more relevant capabilities, such as communication skills and diplomacy). In a free society it is best for candidates and officials to be frank with their constituents about strengths and weaknesses. A false claim on behalf of a public official will do more damage because once identified publicly, it calls into question other perhaps legitimate claims.
Wow, what a bunch of moonbats you Bush haters are. If you have any grasp on reality you'll remember that the world hated the US long before President Bush arrived. Perhaps you'll also remember that almost all of the Democrats supported the war and that Saddam had 19 months to allow inspectors in to avoid this mess.
You will soon see that President Obama is going to be changing his views on a lot of things he promised in the campaign. (The tax increase he promised but now opposed is just the beginning) The world is more complicated than your simple, left leaning minds can comprehend.
Funny how we have such double standards.
MS   December 28th, 2008 3:25 pm ET
The moral values violated by Bush and Cheney in comparison to those of Clinton are staggering. Invading the wrong country for the wrong reasons. Afghanistan should have been our primary focus from the start. Public officials should be required to take responsibility for bad decisions as well as good ones.
Kathy from PA   December 28th, 2008 3:24 pm ET
I agree with Rob from CA who commented on the fact that the president "laughed" at the incident. Neither Laura nor George have shown any ability to look beyond themselves and the actions that have adversely affected people all around this world.
How sad that these people have the power they have and yet don't have the wisdom to recognize it's consequences.. George could only laugh and Laura could only idealize the situation, while the rest of the world looked on and "got it".
carol   December 28th, 2008 3:24 pm ET
I'm sure Laura wasn't amused it was rather dangerous......but she must know that incident was an act of disdain to put it mildly of how lots of people in that region really feel about Bush.
Although it was unfortunate it happened it shows that we have to change our mind set about our arrogance round the world and how we deal with other countries.
IDIOTS! What would have happened if this clown threw his shoes at Sadam? He wouldn't have left the room alive!
In a free society, EVERONE is free to protest and some go to far. Iraqi's have a shoe thrower and here in America, we have idiots who throw fake blood on old ladies wearing fur coats (PETA).
The fact that this "Shoe Thrower" was able to protest in this way without fear shows we have brought something important to the Iraqi people-FREEDOM!
~~~~~~~~
I respectfully disagree with the beginning of your post. I am an American, but Bush never represented me. He was never my President. I applaud Muntadhar al-Zaidi and didn’t at all feel insulted as an American when he threw his shoes at Bush. Besides Iraqis, like most of the world, primarily play football (or soccer) and that is why he probably couldn't connect.

However, I do very much agree with the latter portion of your post. Sante!

I think the First Lady gave a good interview today. Sure she should be offended that the reporter threw a shoe at her husband and although I do not care for the President my self. It was offensive to me and should have been offensive to the US that such a thing was done.
Note* How many people in the US that are raised up with "get your feet off that table", "don't you hit him/her with that shoe" (kicking) "keep your feet on the floor". If this sounds familiar to you , even hear in the US some of us were raised with the same beliefs.

Americans who are fed up with the lies, manipulations,disregard for our Constitution, arrogance and above all else, a criminal responsibility for the deaths of >4000 soldiers (and thousands more Iraqis) should send our own old shoes to the White House as a show of support..............
for al-Zaidi.

Laura is our First Lady and has comported herself with dignity throughout her husband's troubled administration. She deserves our support and is not to blame for George Bush's failed presidency. She is not a Stepford wife. She is a woman who loves her husband. She also realizes full well that her role is NOT that of the highest elected office in our country, but as an honored spouse. I will miss Laura and know that Michelle Obama will continue her fine tradition of support and principal head of the family, thus freeing her husband's time for the crucial work of guiding our country out of this terrible war and into better economic opportunity.

It was an INSULT no matter how you want to TWIST IT AND TURN IT!

Sure I am somewhat sorry that this journalist has to be punished
for this incident, (and I hope he is) but the BOTTOM LINE IS, HE DID A REALLY STUPID AND INSULTING THING!

This was not just an INSULT TO PRESIDENT BUSH, IT WAS AN INSULT TO ALL AMERICANS, and whether THE IRAQIS believe it or not, IT WAS AN INSULT OF THE HIGHEST ORDER TO THE IRAQI PRESIDENT, AND TO THE PEOPLE OF IRAQ!

I DO NOT THINK THIS INCIDENT SHOULD BE SWEPT UNDER
THE CARPET!

MAYBE IT WOULD BE A GRAND GESTURE FOR PRESIDENT
BUSH TO PARDON THE JOURNALIST, and show a SPIRIT OF
GOODWILL AND UNDERSTANDING BEFORE LEAVING THE
WHITEHOUSE. I think this would go a long way to getting the
people of IRAQ to stop and think very seriously of just how
WRONG THE JOURNALIST'S ACTIONS WERE!

Too bad it wasn't an explosive shoe like Richard Reid's and that the guy didn't have time to light it first. It will be so good here in America when the Bush's are gone.

Ken   December 28th, 2008 2:57 pm ET

Facing one's shoes towards someone, or trampling their name with the shoes, etc. is not a "muslim" insult, as suggested by the story. It is rather prevailent in all Asian/South Asian cultures.

Is he ordering suicide bombers to go into crowded markets? You freaking people and your moronic hyperbole. President Bush got many things wrong, but be honest about IRAQIs killing IRAQIs.

David   December 28th, 2008 2:52 pm ET

Yes, Laura...people are "expressing themselves" and thus that things in Iraq have improved...

He threw his frikkin' SHOES at your husband!

You can't spin that!

Mal Bumgarner   December 28th, 2008 2:51 pm ET

Dear Laura,

As an American citizen, under the present Bush/Cheney/Rove/Wolfowitz administration and the huge number of Constitutionally guaranteed freedoms it has stolen, if I would have thrown my shoes at "W" I would probably be sent to Guantanamo, or maybe even executed on the spot as a "terrorist".

My only reason for thinking Muntadhar al-Zaidi should be penalized in any way is that his aim wasn't better.

If you want to laud the fact that Iraqis are freer and can now express their thoughts and feelings in that new democratic society, (obviously just another well crafted White House spin on the shoe throwing incident), have you heard the discouraging news that they have been expressing (for quite a while now) that they want the us OUT of their country? You see, its THEIR country so don't you think they have the right to determine things like that? You know, being a democracy and all.

Or is that too much democracy for you and your old man to stomach?

Thank God there's only 23 days left of the most despicable administration in our country's long history.

Please go back to Texas. (As in: don't call us, we'll call you, if we need anything else from the Bush family.)

Susan   December 28th, 2008 2:50 pm ET

I don't blame her. Laura is a very nice lady.

Wenton Chan   December 28th, 2008 2:50 pm ET

Keep throwing shoes and keep validating the spread, however paltry, of western liberal democratic ideals.

"And they'll do whatever. But I know that if Saddam Hussein had been there, the man wouldn't have been released. And he probably wouldn't — you know, would have been executed."

And it's true! The blood of thousands of Americans and trillions of America's wealth enabled this guy to express himself freely.

Ms. Bush your husband deserves a lot more than shoes thrown at him for what he has done to the innocent people of Irag and our country as well. I hope he and your family burn in hell. What your husband has done is despicable. Not only the damage to irag but our country as well.

California Gold   December 28th, 2008 2:45 pm ET

Begging your pardon Mrs. Bush, but I believe there is more to this than citing your husband is "... a natural athlete." and this is an indicia of the improvement in Iraq. The citizens of the country are certainly pleased the dictator is gone, but once our country under your husband's leadership completely ripped out law, order, the court system and political system, your husband's leadership had nothing else. It has cost the Iraqi people more than quality of life. The American brand of lawlessness, murder of innocent civilians, pillaging and plummeting their country and years of lies in the name of "freedom" is why shoes were thrown at your husband.

MaryanneAZ   December 28th, 2008 2:45 pm ET

It's funny how we think we're so superior, but when push comes to shove we're vindictive and unforgiving. This journalist and many of his fellow countrymen lost family, jobs, utilities, culture and much more in a war of choice for reasons ultimately only known to Dubya. If I had the opportunity, I'd like to see the book thrown at Dubya himself. He is a war criminal without doubt. When did torture become a U.S. policy? I'm no dove, but an unprovoked war on a nation that had not one countryman on one of those flights into the towers, pentagon and the pennsylvania field makes no sense to me. We fight if we're attacked or credibly threatened with imminent harm, not for oil. Sorry, Dubya. I hope we do eventually throw the book at Bush and his administration. That would be Democratic!

Oh this is going to be a wonderful four years. Impeach Hussein and Hair Plug.

anonymous   December 28th, 2008 2:43 pm ET

That is so beside the point.

Sure under Saddam Hussein he wouldn't have done that same thing. Then again under Saddam Hussein's rule a US leader wouldn't even dream of being able to visit Iraq.

The shoes were thrown out of frustration from the incompetence of the invasion. The reporter probably saw the thousands of people who were killed by this war and he was personally affected by it.

And the shoes were thrown at a US president not at an Iraqi leader. So how do you know? Maybe if bush would have visited Iraq during Saddam Hussein's rule he would have had a show thrown at him as well!

God. Bush and his administration should talk about the failure of the war not “Iraqis are more free”.

Bush knows he's a loser, people around him know he's a loser and they don't want to address the issues.

And Bush went ahead and admitted the fact that the US invasion has brought in Al Qaeda into Iraq. So if that is the case then the shoes were well deserved.

David Newport, OR   December 28th, 2008 2:42 pm ET

Could the shoes have been thrown because:

...hundreds of thousands of Iraqi's have lost their lives over the war against Sadaam?

...the country has been driven to an economic collapse resulting in increased hunger and despair?

...sectarian violence will eventually lead to a civil war and partioning of Iraq?

If I was sitting next to that journalist I would have removed my shoes and offered them to him. The Bush family just doesn't get it. They still believe that this war has been good for the Iraqi's. Well nuts to the Bushes.

However, the picture of an American President ducking a projectile (even foot-ware) fills me with anger toward the thrower. This is not acceptable as a means for dealing with an awful President.

That shoe thrower should just wait with the rest of us for the next 22 days 21 hours 31 minutes and 5 seconds like the rest of us.

Muntadhar al-Zaidi was not a lunatic fanatic who just threw a shoe or two at President Bush because of his religious affiliation.He was a journalist who have covered the mayhem and destruction in IRAQ on a daily basis and was shocked to see what was happening in IRAQ.Innocent people being butchered ,children being burned and orphaned and women being raped by extremists .Also we need to accept the FACT that the whole invasion of IRAQ was carried out on a FALSE premise and after such an invasion the destruction in IRAQ as a result of extremists gaining control of IRAQ who were never present in IRAQ.Also we in America have to imagine ourselves in the shoes of such people .It is the anger and pain that they have experienced over years which prompts them indulge in such incidents.Most people in America have the freedom but not the people in IRAQ.I agree with Laura Bush's remarks that the Journalist would have been executed under Saddam but i don't think his actions call for condemnation.I hope he is released as soon as possible and every effort is made to look into what motivated him to do what he did.

Nancy Smith   December 28th, 2008 2:14 pm ET

The Iraqi journalist who threw shoes to President Bush because he had no other weapons with him! Yea yea.. its a sign of disdain, but if he had a gun, he couldve used it, thanks to security near presidents and other prominent people!

Derek   December 28th, 2008 2:14 pm ET

pfffff...... i was amused by the shoe incident.

debbie   December 28th, 2008 2:12 pm ET

She's worth 1,000 of her husband.

Lisa   December 28th, 2008 2:12 pm ET

Most of America (over 75%) is looking forward to the end of this administration. The shoes are just a symptom of a broader issue–an unjust war, an administration that has abused its power, a party led by zealots and a VP that calls the shots (regardless of the law)....so please return to Texas so we can go on with rebuilding this country and our reputation in the world.

Mike   December 28th, 2008 2:11 pm ET

Laura Bush can thank the US press and the US Congress for indicating that it is ok to disrespect the President of the United States.

Paros   December 28th, 2008 2:11 pm ET

OMG – The shoe thrower has been tortured in prison and all Laura can think about is not how horrid things are in Iraq that would push someone to the brink of facing a severe and long term imprisonment but she thinks her lovely husband has jprovided more "freedom" to the Iraqis thus permitting the journalist to feel comfortable and "free" enought to hurl shoes at POTUS. Slightly self-serving and narcissistic perhaps Laura.

renee   December 28th, 2008 2:10 pm ET

I mean LMAO ha ha

Bush Air Forces   December 28th, 2008 2:10 pm ET

I love the spin. It's because of their freedom that they did this. Bush is a natural athlete.

It happened because of the views on Bush–effigy circumstances have been occurring for many years. It's only a shame that they did this to our President as the man is about to leave office. I guess a great percentage of Americans aren't the only people who feel that he did something atrocious by going to war in Iraq when Bin Laden has been further east the entire time.

I love the spin of the First Lady, however. She's a loyal wife to her husband.

renee   December 28th, 2008 2:09 pm ET

The first lady may not have been amused but I LMOA!!!!!!!!!!

rlkidd   December 28th, 2008 2:08 pm ET

bush should just stay home, he has ruined thrcredibility of the United states.
What a loser.

LIGHTS VALE   December 28th, 2008 2:05 pm ET

Be happy it was only shoes, Laura...

your husband, his father and all their cronies are responsible for hundreds of thousands of deaths and a global meltdown of economy.

Besides, you can look forward to playing house and shutting the world out as per your usual; after all, none of you are willing to bear the vaguest semblance of accountability; as a matter of fact, I doubt you even care beyond your bank book.

Against the war   December 28th, 2008 2:04 pm ET

While I don't condone the act. I think it would be worthwhile for Mrs. Bush to ponder what her husband's motovations were for the war.

Jan Illinois   December 28th, 2008 2:04 pm ET

This is News? Who cares what laura bush thinks?

A   December 28th, 2008 2:01 pm ET

Shame he didn't hit him.

Marty   December 28th, 2008 2:00 pm ET

I'm not amused by Laura's Dracula or Batman Joker burgundy lips on that pancake make-up face either. Yuck.

A. Bert   December 28th, 2008 1:57 pm ET

Really? Who cares what Laura thinks? Most of the civilized world is cheering the Iraqi man who threw his shoes at this American president. I applaud the shoe-thrower; he has spoken for hundreds of millions, if not billions, of people around the globe, including me. May he heal quickly from the broken bones inflicted upon him for his bravery!
As for Laura Bush? Good riddance!

Brian Geiger   December 28th, 2008 1:57 pm ET

Laura is just as useless as her husband. Who cares what she thinks?

girlfriday   December 28th, 2008 1:57 pm ET

Mrs. Bush said her husband was "very quick", and that he's "very athletic": this is an example of the delusional state of mind that exists in the Bush Administration. It's odd that she would say that the shoe-throwing incident is a "sign: of Iragis feeling freer to express themselves, as opposed to the truth – the Iraqis got screwed after the U.S. went into Bagdad. There was no plan to reconstruct the country, and the U.S. turned a blind eye, figuring everything would work itself out. Iraq is in worse condition than it has ever been, thanks to Bush. That's why the man threw his shoe.

S Callahan   December 28th, 2008 1:55 pm ET

My first thought when I heard of this incident was the same as Mrs. Bush...he (the shoe thrower) felt he had achieved the freedom to express himself.
Though I think it was wrong to throw an object and believe he would have been better off just yelling like us "Americans" do...I don't think the man should spend oddles in jail for this. In our country with no past violent history it would be a fine and probation. Nor should he be viewed as a hero....there has to be some boundaries for respect even when one disagrees.

Million Shoeless Man March   December 28th, 2008 1:55 pm ET

CALL TO ACTION: Pave his limp out of Washington with size 10's! "The Million Shoeless Man March on Washington."
It is not the job of the US to make anyone free. It is the job of the people in that country.

Shoe-icide bomber   December 28th, 2008 1:53 pm ET

The shoe thrower is now apologetic and pleading for leniency.
Apparently the shoe is now on the other foot.

cf   December 28th, 2008 1:52 pm ET

The shoe incident... Laura not amused. So, what? I am positive many of us parents are not amused or even acceptive of the fact that her husband has robbed many Americans of their children. This was not our fight to begin with... it belonged to Bush and the shoe incident is only proof that he is not respected even by the Iraqis.

A. Bert   December 28th, 2008 1:49 pm ET

Really? Who cares?

Civic Commentary   December 28th, 2008 1:49 pm ET

It wasn't meant to be amusing.Mrs. Bush is taking a page from her husband's book and ignoring the righteous anger behind the words. It wasn't a journalist getting the chance to exercise his lungs; the man had lost friends and family to the Bush Regime. Over 100,000 Iraqis have been killed since the United States' invasion.

It wasn't supposed to be amusing, Laura. Your husband was the only one laughing.

Michael   December 28th, 2008 1:48 pm ET

Who cares what Laura Bush thinks about anything? She married W. for crying out loud. She's a moron too. Half of this country and the rest of the world "weren't amused" by W's illegal invasion of Iraq and the subsequent deaths of hundreds of thousands of innocent Iraqis and thousands of American servicemen and women.

George Bush should have a steel-toed work boot hit him full force in the face every minute of every day for eternity.

dub   December 28th, 2008 1:46 pm ET

I see why they are married. She is just as lost as he is. Her husbands policies are by far going to be the reason the Bushes are going to bust hell wide open. From top to buttom. Maybe even the whole party.

JoAnne   December 28th, 2008 1:45 pm ET

Republicans, Mrs. Bush included, still do NOT get it. This shoe incident is symbolic of how deeply countless people, Iraqis and others, feel about the US. Twenty years ago you see Rumsfield shaking Hussein's hand as an ally. Fast forward and it's W's "regime change." Imperialism plain and simple.

Br   December 28th, 2008 1:45 pm ET

Would someone stop Mayor Bloomberg and the MTA from increasing fares on subways and buses.

No 3rd term for Bloomberg !!!

Lisa T   December 28th, 2008 1:44 pm ET

Some people's attempts at trying to rewrite Bush's legacy are elementary! The majority of the world's citizens do not approve of Bush's actions during his presidency. I am constantly amazed that they are now trying to put positive "spins" on things that went terribly wrong instead of admitting his mistakes and giving him credit for the things that he did well. Iraq war should not have happened, regardless of how well the surge has worked! Al Quaeda was NOT in Iraq before we invaded and therefore he cannot be given credit for getting rid of them!

SANDRA   December 28th, 2008 1:44 pm ET

I AGREE WITH THE FIRST LADY IT IS THE SIGN OF THE TIMES . MR .BUSH IS HATED ALL OVER THE WORLD HE WENT THERE TO GLORIFY HIS EGO BUT WHAT A WAKE UP CALL HE GOT. AMERICA IS FALLING DOWN ALL AROUND HIM AND HE FLYS OUT OF THE COUNTRY AND GOES TO A COUNTRY HE INVADED OUR COUNTRY IS IN PIECES . WHAT A ROTTEN PRESIDENT AND THE WORST AMERICAN EVER.

Raj   December 28th, 2008 1:39 pm ET

What does she expect, shower flowers on him????/ She should visit mothers who have lost kids, wives who have lost husbands, kids who have lost their parents..... Does she realize how many murders her husband is responsible for? And all of these were killed under a false pretense of national security. Iraqis had ABSOLUTELY nothing to do with 9/11. Going after Afghanistan was justified, and Bush did not finish the job there, instead he went after oil in Iraq to line his and VPs friends pockets.

Never have we seen such corrupt administration in the Western world, and hope we never see. I hope there is justice at the end of it all and all the corrupt members of this administration rot in JAILS......

Bill Williams   December 28th, 2008 1:37 pm ET

laura, i think you are the only one not amused. even your stupid husband thought it was funny.

Al V   December 28th, 2008 1:34 pm ET

Let's think about the reverse scenario. What would have happened if an American (westerner) performed the same act on an Iraqi official, let alone leader?..let's just say, heads would role. Sadly, we westerners are far more tolerant of such childish acts of temper. Peace loving Muslims..

Robert Sparks   December 28th, 2008 1:29 pm ET

Only Fox News would exploit the story and who cares what she thinks.

Dixon   December 28th, 2008 1:27 pm ET

I completely agree with Mrs. Bush. I don't like where President Bush has taken our country, but he deserves our respect. As for the shoe guy, he deserves what ever they do to him. The words he spoke alone would have been death for him when Sadam was in power. He should be thankful for his freedom.

Elsee   December 28th, 2008 1:23 pm ET

Amazing. Throwing a shoe is "bad?" How about bombing innocent Iraqis, including women and children, because your husband entered a war based on lies? How about gutting the economy of a country to pay for a war based on lies? What a bimbo.

cile/fairhiope, al   December 28th, 2008 1:21 pm ET

I really don't care what Laura Bush thinks about anything. She has sat by and condoned her husband's decisions for all of the last eight years and yes the Iraq jouranalist was correct in what he did and what he said and I think a majority of Americans would agree.. Bush had it coming and I wish the thrower's aim had been more accurate and this is coming from a mother of a solder on his second deployment to Iraq and someone who expierenced Katrinia up close and in person both situations about which the Bush's have no clue.

Sherrol in Canada   December 28th, 2008 1:21 pm ET

Of course she wouldn't be, after all, lame or not, he's still her husband and she would have found it unsettling.

The question is however, does she realize that the incident speaks volumes as to how hated and dispised her husband is in Iraq and the rest of the world?

S.Owen   December 28th, 2008 1:20 pm ET

Mrs.Bush,
Thank you for speaking out about the shoe incident in which the President was attacked.
I do wish you both all the best in 2009.
Remenber one thing.It is easy to critiicize but very hard to lead .
You both did your best against all odds.
My you enjoy your future .
Just a Canadian friend.

I have to actually agree with Mrs. Bush. If it had been Saddam Hussein, the man would have been executed, hence the Iraqis are exercising the right to express themselves without those consequences.

I just wish one had connected!

Karen,   December 28th, 2008 1:19 pm ET

Well Laura, The world hasn't been amused by your husband for 8 long long years.
He had it coming!!!! Just too bad the shoes missed.

bill, alabama   December 28th, 2008 1:19 pm ET

If the option was available to other people both world wide and here, the "Prez" might get more than shoes thrown at him.

Kim   December 28th, 2008 1:19 pm ET

And in America, throwing shoes at some one is seen as as sign of affection :}

Gil   December 28th, 2008 1:19 pm ET

There were a lot of people out there who would have liked to throw more than a shoe at her husband.

Tony   December 28th, 2008 1:19 pm ET

Who cares what Laura Bush thinks? Given the chance I would have thrown something more than shoes at that Nazi Bush!.....and my aim is a lot better too!

unlikely voter [D]   December 28th, 2008 1:18 pm ET

wow, they even got laura on fox trying to save face from the shoe incident. what a fitting end to a horrible , horrible nightmare of an administration. He deserved to get hit in the head with those shoes. They should give that iraqi a medal. Laura says if saddam were ther he would have exicuted the guy. sorry but i disagree, if saddam were there that guy would have gotten a medal for tossing his shoes at Bush!

marty   December 28th, 2008 1:16 pm ET

The Iraqi shoe throwing was not right but it's also rather telling that President Bush would, in essence, 'blow off' the incident by spinning it under the umbrella of ... freedom. This was an enormous insult to Mr. Bush and his entire administration, and to the Americans as well. Consider the fact that anytime George Bush appeared in any public forum, everything was orchestrated and tightly controlled, whether it be a press conference or a campaign stop. That Mr. al-Zaida, a professional journalist, would surprise everyone in a relatively safe environment dramatically illustrates the anger and hatred that many Iraqis hold towards the U. S. as a result of the invasion. Hopefully, one day the veil of secrecy which surrounds this Bush administration will be lifted and facts will replace spin.

Irish   December 28th, 2008 1:16 pm ET

Bravo to the shoe-throwing journalist. Laura Bush lives in a bubble and seems clueless about the damage her husband and his cronies have inflicted on the people of Iraq and the people of the United States. My son is currently on duty in Iraq and when I heard and watched W's inappropriate responses to this incident, I realized my son takes the world situation and our foreign relations much more seriously than this clown. W came in like a cowboy and is going out like horse excrement at the bottom of a pair of 'size 10s'.

dan   December 28th, 2008 1:14 pm ET

I agree with Laura Bush – the entire room of people should throw all their shoes at him.

JOEY/OREGON   December 28th, 2008 1:14 pm ET

props to the shoe thrower. i would've done the same thing if i had the chance.

Rolleyes   December 28th, 2008 1:12 pm ET

I'm sure that Iraqis weren't amused when your husband sent in troops to destroy their infrastructure based on lies.

Approximately ONE MILLION Iraqi civilians dead as a result of this conflict. That is almost as much as Saddam killed in his almost 30 year rule, and we did it in less than 8.

Laura Bush, the world isn't amused at your husband's criminal behavior, and I'm sure you won't be amused when he is arrested and put on trial.

Fred   December 28th, 2008 1:09 pm ET

I think that everyone that has lost a job, lost a relative or loved one in Iraq should have a shot at hitting GW Bush in the face with a shoe. His lack of response to economic issues for 8 years and all the efforts to win "HIS" un-winnable war are deplorable. We now have even more people in the world that hate us and want to kill us.

Patriot   December 28th, 2008 1:07 pm ET

No one cares what you or your idiot husband think, Laura. We just want you out of the White House and out of the country.

Anonymous   December 28th, 2008 1:07 pm ET

I can understand why she might not have found it amusing, but I laughed harder than I have in many years. It was so beautifully fitting – almost poetic.. How many of us would throw shoes at Bush if we had the chance???

Juanita Johnson   December 28th, 2008 1:06 pm ET

Mrs. Bush's observation is on point. I feel most Americans are insulted by that reporter's actions. The decision of his fate rests with his country.

Americans are able to express themselves in voting booths, with our shoes on. Maybe one day Muntadhar al-Zaidi will develop this as his only acceptable human option.

May President and Mrs. Laura Bush live a long and healthy lives as shoe wearing Americans. God bless both of you. A Democratic African American female in Atlanta, GA.

Raj   December 28th, 2008 1:06 pm ET

Dont forget Laura that your husband deserved it

james   December 28th, 2008 1:06 pm ET

Yeah, he should come visit my neighborhood. He'd get a lot more than shoes hurled at him. In fact, he should get a few subpeonas and arrest warrants thrown at him. Let him laugh those off.

Alfred   December 28th, 2008 1:04 pm ET

Bush deserves to have a lot more than a shoe thrown at him.

Remy   December 28th, 2008 1:03 pm ET

An Angry American   December 28th, 2008 1:03 pm ET

It was our sons who liberated you and not the sons of Khomeini who are still working on distabilizing your country.
Saddam had killed more Iraqi Shiites than anyone in the history, and we should have never liberated you hypocrite Iraqis.
Thanks for the treatment though. We shall never forget your hypocrosy and true allegiance.

srk   December 28th, 2008 1:00 pm ET

So that's a scale to measure freedom in Iraq, by Bushes! Bush will be ever haunted with his decisions made for millions while he is high, unless he is high :P Big Looser!

Texas Teacher   December 28th, 2008 1:00 pm ET

Well, combat boats would have demonstrated a definate amount of disdain.... but actually meant combat boots! *LOL* I think I would have wanted to insult the man and his senseless war, but not DESTROY him! :) Pardon me, Commentators.

Texas Teacher   December 28th, 2008 12:59 pm ET

I personally... would have throw a couple of combat boats at the man to symbolize all the pain and suffering this personal war of the Bush/Cheney administration has brought the people of Iraq. I'm not condoning the activity, but feel it should be treated for what it is... birth pangs... not malice. The man was showing his contempt. He could have thrown a pipe bomb. AND he was beaten unmercifully... not exactly the signs of a growing Democracy.

petena   December 28th, 2008 12:58 pm ET

While I am not a Republican, I did find the incident very insulting. The problem is that Bush has "earned" us that kind of reputation around the world. I hope president-elect Obama can restore the respect we deserve.

Daniel   December 28th, 2008 12:57 pm ET

Of course this is up to the Iraqis and their "justice" system but she should have addressed the well-publicized claims that he was tortured. Is that beneath her?

I guess we and Iraq are "torture buddies" .

trevor   December 28th, 2008 12:57 pm ET

In every article about this event CNN consistently omits the second sentence of al-Zaidi's words, "This is from the widows, the orphans and those who were killed in Iraq."
This sentence seems to explain WHY he took the action he did and failure to print this reeks of an intentional omission. The "farewell kiss you dog" is nice and all, but translation of the second sentence might help all of us get a better understanding of the story and perhaps even convince some that CNN practices responsible journalism.

False Prophet   December 28th, 2008 12:56 pm ET

Everyone is entitled to their own opinion and Laura Bush is no different, but I found the incident to be very amusing. This "insult", expressed by an Iraqi , certainly converys how the majority Americans feel toward Bush.

Union Flag   December 28th, 2008 12:55 pm ET

FOX and the repubs will spin this in a myriad of ways, but the fact remains:

Indeed a sign of the times. A US president is so popular in the country he liberated they throw shoes at him.

Paul   December 28th, 2008 12:54 pm ET

Not sure why Laura is not happy about the shoes.

George Bush and his ineptitude earned those shoes. Probably one of the first things he has ever earned in his miserable life...

Those 2 shoes and the matching comments do a pretty good job of summing up his entire Presidency! Last time I check about 75% of America agrees!

SarahSnowGirl   December 28th, 2008 12:53 pm ET

How much Botox does this lady shoot, anyway? Even more than me, I guess!

La Chatte   December 28th, 2008 12:49 pm ET

I'm too really sad about the shoe incident because al-Zaidi missed! What a waste of a good pair of shoes!

claudeintexas   December 28th, 2008 12:48 pm ET

Mrs. Bush's comments are very predictable. She always stands by her man, rather than realizing the true significance of the shoe-throwing episode. She has obviously adopted the Bush party line that Iraqis feel they are better able now to express themselves than in the past. I have a feeling they threw shoes at those they intensely disliked even before President Bush "liberated" the country.

She is wrong that Saddam Hussein would have executed the shoe-thrower. Instead, he would most likely have made him a hero.

James Dadas   December 28th, 2008 12:47 pm ET

She shouldn't be surprised, because she gave her husband and president GEORGE .W. BUSH the BOOTS when he used to come home DRUNK and out of his friken mind....HE DESERVED that, HITLER deserved the shoes so is GEORGE.W . BUSH.

Buzz-Seattle   December 28th, 2008 12:46 pm ET

I think Laura Bush is delusional! "Thie Iraqis are freer to express themselves"...is she for real? Let's remember it was her husband, George, who invaded Iraq...and even if she chooses to ignore it, George was responsible directly or indirectly, for the deaths of over 4,200 Americans, and hundreds of thousands of Iraqis as well as the displacement of over 1.5 million Iraqis.
Sure the argument can be made that Saddam was a bad man who killed thousands of his countrymen and needed to be removed. But...wait...what about Robert Mugabe in Zimbabwe? or Kim Jung Ill in North Korea, or the regime in Thailand? Why haven't we invaded these countries and toppled their leaders to save the hundreds of thousands of people who have been murdered or imprisoned? Could it be that there's no oil...no national interest for the U.S. in these places? Hmmm I wonder. Anyway, I can understand why Laura stands by her man...but please get real with the shoes! I will be just as happy to see George Bush out of office as I'm sure most Iraqis will be.

Teresa   December 28th, 2008 12:46 pm ET

This woman is as clueless to humanity as her Mother-in-law. It doesn't appear to occur to her that the emotion from that Iraqi shoe-thrower is echoed all over Iraq for the countless murders ordered by her husband and his henchmen. She appears to be blind to all the harm he's committed.

The shoe throwing incident in Iraq is an example of how some of the Iraqis feel about the invasion of their country. We eliminated Saddam Hussein and his Baathist Party, but failed to establish law and order and failed to understand the religious and ethnic conflicts which existed for hundreds of years. The invasion gave the Al Qaida a convenient venue to engage in terrorism. If anything, it encouraged other Arab countries to increase their hostility against the US. Suicide bombers came from a variety of nearby Arab countries. The lack of planning, the insufficient number of troops and the incompetence to monitor the contractors contributed to the disaster in Iraq.

I told you so   December 28th, 2008 12:33 pm ET

She shouldn't be, nor should the foolish people of this country. To have someone throw a shoe at the president not only disrespects the president, but it also disrepects the people of America. Even if you don't like the president.

tularemia   December 28th, 2008 12:32 pm ET

We should be more restrained than the Iraqi reporter. Let everyone who feels that the "BUSHMAN" has done more damage to our country than was in bin ladens wildest dreams .... should send a picture of a shoe to the white house. This could be snail mail or email. A picture is worth a thousand words. Of course our country deserves all it is experiencing for we reelected him as well as the congresspeople who once had a 13% approval rating. We could send them our favorite shoe picture as well.

Renee   December 28th, 2008 12:32 pm ET

Laura is not amused about shoe incident! Well, I guess I should be amused as to how Bush has screwed up this economy. I guess I should be amused about how he has thrown out our tax money to every industry, bank, mortgage company, and wall street -not to mention the measley stimulus checks that puts you in a higher tax bracket so the government can get some of it back. The critics who claim Obama is a socialist must somehow be related to Ray Charles.
So, as for Laura's statement, will somebody please give me another shoe!

Raymond Christopher   December 28th, 2008 12:32 pm ET

Laura Bush misses the point: freedom to speak is a sign of democracy; freedom to hurl a shoe at her husband is a indication of how Iraqis feel about the U.S. intervention.

Bill   December 28th, 2008 12:30 pm ET

I'm sure military families aren't amused that her husband sent their loved ones into Iraq without any real plan for victory.

PeopleDemocracy.com   December 28th, 2008 12:30 pm ET

Eight years ago...No Way!

You can't even imagine about
throwing shoe at the then Iraqi President.

If you did...

There was no Judicial Custody; No Court; No Justice.

Saddam Hussein was the head of all the three branches,
Executive, Legislative and Judicial.

In Saddam Hussein's regime, this journalist
would have got executed in public by this time on the street.
Perhaps, his whole family would have been wiped out.

Now, the journalist Muntazer al-Zaidi is in judicial custody.
He is getting treatment in the hospital.
He is produced in the court. The judge is hearing his case.
People are protesting against his arrest.

That means:
- the present day Iraq Government has effective Police Force.
- Judicial System is now part of the Democratic Government.
- They do follow the process of keeping the person in Judicial Custody
- Judges do exist in the present day Iraq.
- Above all, from the fact that the people are protesting; that is,
Civil Rights Movements are allowed in the present day Iraq.

That was the Mission of George W Bush.

His mission was – Establishing a Democracy based Government in Iraq
and provide total freedom to the People of Iraq.

No other leaders on Planet Earth could have achieved this.

George W Bush and Bush alone could accomplish this.

So, George, Thank God for this Shoe Throwing incident.

Shoe Throwing incident clearly demonstrated
the Results of your Performances and Effective Decision on Iraq.

It demonstrated to the entire world that the
People do enjoy Freedom in the Present Day Iraq.

And the judicial process, treatment in the hospital and
Iraq police force, demonstrate to the entire world that
Democratic Process and Government is in place in the Present Day IRAQ.

So, George, Congrats.

Go Ahead and Shout; Let the World hear your voice;

Mission IS Accomplished.

Mark from Denver, Co   December 28th, 2008 12:23 pm ET

If Saddam had still been in power. Bush would not have been in Iraq for a press conference. To make the hypothetical "If Saddam had been the show thrower would not be alive today" statement is rediculous.

Hope is Coming   December 28th, 2008 12:22 pm ET

Although I am not a big fan of GW, I was appalled by the shoe throwing incident, he is still the President of the greatest country in the world and he should be respected as that, to throw shoes at him is an insult not just to our President but to our country as well, the shoe thrower , in my opinion should be executed.

“Iraqis feel a lot freer to express themselves.”

How out of touch you are. you are actually proud. you are such an airhead that shoe was thrown because your husband authorized the butchering that is happening in that country not because they feel free to express opinion. you jerk!

Well, we Americans aren't amused by our terrorist dictator Bush. The rest of the world isn't amused either. I can't WAIT to see him, the administration, and the rest of his cronies TRIED AND CONVICTED in either American courts or international tribunals. I wish I could have gotten close enough to throw MY shoes at Bush too! He deserves everything he gets. Hopefully he gets the same treatment he gave Saddam.

While I admire you Mrs. Bush and yes what the journalist did was wrong he among millions of Iraqis and americans have suffered a great loss in this war and it was President Bush that authorized this war that killed and wounded thousands of Iraqis and Americans .So while this journalist is being condemed by what he did remember he too have suffered a great loss

Niki Birdsflight   December 28th, 2008 12:21 pm ET

Yes sure Laura, you feel bad that your husband is not respected by all in Iraq. It would be interesting to take an anonymous poll with the people to see exactly how they feel about the occupation, constant fear of harm and general destruction in the country. Sadam was a crazy dictator but he did not go about to destroy the whole country. The troops mean well, but we occupy a Muslim culture and that will never fly. I think the sooner we get out of there the better.

I can understand Laura Bush; this shoe incident is personal to her. This is also personal to the families and friends of dead Iraqis... Bush presidency seems to generate a lot of controversies from the start to the end...very strong feelings ... because of what happened during his "watch".

ginny   December 28th, 2008 12:09 pm ET

Julia   December 28th, 2008 12:06 pm ET

I feel that it is extreme to convict Muntadhar al-Zaidi to 2 years in prision for a "shoe" incident that didn't actually hurt Dubya.

waytagojoe   December 28th, 2008 12:06 pm ET

IS there still suspicion that Pres. Bush would not allow Iraqis to actually have their own freedom like so many press pieces alleged? This is a testimony that Pres. Bush is a man with the freedom of a people held carefully in mind. History will record that he kept America safe from homeland attacks for years after 9/11 and that he was dignified and reverent enough to take no repercussions when insulted and attacked, Perhaps the media will think twice in the coming years before it produces such sensational and benign coverage, but in any event, Bush will be hailed as a stick to his morals man.

Can't blame the woman – there aren't many of us that would be amused by someone hurling a shoe at our husband and having the rest of the world give a big laugh. And as much as I am not a fan of President Bush, it was an incident I thought he handled with quick thinking and grace.

Slash   December 28th, 2008 12:04 pm ET

"It's not as bad as Saddam" is an often-used excuse by the Bush administration, and it's a stupid one no matter which crony uses it. The new government not being as brutal as the old (though it is nearly as corrupt) does not comfort the Iraqis who have lost family and friends due to our pointless war. We had no business, absolutely none, going in there, and the million plus deaths that have occurred in the past half-decade are on our hands. Anyone who thinks that we helped the Iraqis is deluded; we merely turned a dictatorship into chaos.

On Friday, I pointed out in one of these posts that Obama has never voted against a union proposal and and that no one has reported (at least on CNN) that UAW owns a $33 million dollar golf course for union executives. I was called a republican idiot with a 4th grade education, uneducated, no capable of having an orignial thought, several mentions of incestuous relations ships with my sister along with the usual stupid and idiots thrown in. This truly is the Obama socialcrat network. I expect the hob nailed boot people from the Chicago thugocracy at my door any minute.

Steve   December 28th, 2008 11:56 am ET

She shouldn't be amused. It wasn't intended to be funny. It was an Arab man literally hurling the worst kind of Arab insult at a head of state. I am no fan of Mr. Bush, but it is not, in any stretch of the imagination, acceptable that this man did what he did. Had an American citizen done that, he'd be in a cell so deep that they'd have to pump sunlight into him.

In spite of all the horrible abuses of power Mr. Bush has been a part of, it it sad to see the leader of the free world being subjected to this kind of stuff. It shows just how far Mr. Bush and his administration have fallen in the eyes of the world. Mrs. Bush seems like a nice person. I hope when her husband is being tried for war crimes at the Hague, she'll have the strength to support him.

Oh, but the rest of us are quite amused, Mrs. Bush. We're planning shoe throwing parties of our own. They get to write the first chapter in your husband's legacy of failure.

Let all the Bush bashing begin. There will be over 200 comments on the shoe tossing, mostly immature silly comments from immature people who really feel this is important.

So fire away Bush beaters,,, toss your comments, your shoes, or your underpants,,,,because you will have nothing smart to say about the REAL problems of this country.

Did you know there are young children in THIS country that can not afford new shoes let alone tossing them at anyone? We have homeless people who can not afford clothes,,,
But yet,, we care only about our new Hollywood style President.

"As you know, he's a natural athlete."

This is complete crap, Bush a natural athlete? Come on, the guy played baseball in highschool, was head cheerleader, and owned the Texas Rangers for a while. That sports resume doesn't qualify him to be labeled a "natural athlete." All I can say is Bush got lucky with some pretty good reflexes, that is about it. The only thing Bush is a natural at, is being a failure. He failed at several businesses and failed to be a good president. I don't respect him or the bloggers who continue to try to defend his legacy. While I respect the first lady, I think she is living a lie, and clearly out of touch with mainstream Americans.

William Okuch Dak   December 28th, 2008 11:48 am ET

Sanna   December 28th, 2008 11:44 am ET

I was also not amused. Mistakes or not, I feel that George bush has tried to help the Iraqi people. To slam our country's elected leader in such a public forum was deliberately offensive. Once again the press seems to take delight in this disrespectful act. I am ashamed for the man and our seemingly gleeful media.
It is much easier to take pot shot at someone when you have no responsibilities to the people of your nation.

William Okuch Dak   December 28th, 2008 11:44 am ET

The first US lady is right that Iraqis feel free to express themselves and that is because of democracy emerging to Iraqi people.
Hurling shoe just at a presidential dog of cat of preseident daughter means loosing one's life as well as his/her family members.
Congratulation to Iraqis to enjoy freedom of self-expression.

"And they'll do whatever. But I know that if Saddam Hussein had been there, the man wouldn't have been released. And he probably wouldn't — you know, would have been executed."

If Saddam were there, the guy would not have thrown shoes at Bush at all. Nice try at spin, though.

Jeff From Jersey   December 28th, 2008 11:42 am ET

It's time for Americans to start feeling freer to express ourselves.It's time to go to Washington and fling our shoes at the whitehouse to demonstrate our absolute disgust at the Bush administration!It would be the final opportunity to show the Bush/Cheney and Rice's of our country that we,unlike the reat of our government,haven't been fooled by their using 9/11 to take away rights guaranteed us to push through the insidious agenda of the few so they could pillage and plunder our own country.
Getting Obama elected is,of course,a clear demonstration of that but we,the citizens of the United States of America,need to show this thug controlled Administration,has damaged and destroyed the lives of americans bothe here and abroad,for the last time and that they are only worthy of the insult of the thrown shoe to demonstrate our detest for them.

I don't agree with all that Bush has done, but I do think that he handled this situation very well.

jrc903   December 28th, 2008 11:33 am ET

Laura Bush summed it up well. I think she was implying that the decision to take the country to war for the "sole benefit of the Iraqi people" has at last been vindicated. While it has been a tough road, the superior vision of the American president has prevailed over the childlike mentality of the Iraqi people–people who just never realized how unhappy they really were- and how good freedom would feel. Obviously, by shouting down the shoe thrower the Iraqi people have shown how well they have come to grips with the loss of so many of their sons, fathers, and children- this war has caused.
Moreover they now realize that their suffering at the hands of BUSH was only in their heads– that their sacrifice was required of them to finally know the truth–that PBush loves them "each" so much that he was willing to squander the fortunes and freedom of his own countryman just to give them the right to express their anger without being killed–outright. It is clear,the Iraqi people should be honored that for the first time in history, one American president has seen what was best for them, vetoed their partisan interests-forcefully freeing them from the "monkey like antics" of their former leader As evidenced by this shoe thrower's support, not everyone in Iraq appreciates the efforts of PBush:the man of peace.But as time goes forward, the discordant voices will die/cry out as the majority of Iraq voices it's opinion on this truly magnificent achievement. . PBush once said that he went to war "because Saddam tried to kill my dad." But now we know the truth–it wasn't what the mental health community suggested after all. No. it wasn't about PBush trying to overcome years of abuse at the hands of his mother-it wasn't about him proving his superiority over his father's organs.- it was about freeing a people so that a shoe thrower would not be beaten and killed. And that makes it all worth while.

Note W failed to bring to justice the mastermind of the 9/11 attacks. The guy is still out there and W has done the wrong thing at every turn.

catmom   December 28th, 2008 11:32 am ET

Have either George or Laura Bush taken the time to understand the meaning behind throwing the shoes? It wasn't meant for amusement. Nor was he trying to get his 15 minutes of fame, or trying to get in the news. Throwing shoes was a way for him to express his outrage of what has happened in Iraq during George Bush's time as President.
That being said, it is outrageous that someone in Iraq felt it okay to do something like that to the President of the United States. This shows how far down our country has gone, the lack of respect others have for our country and President and that is sad especially considering how much we have lost in Iraq.

I feel the same way – I want to throw something at someone – all the irresponsible bloggers for a start – but it wouldn't really do me any good – wouldn't change their minds or attitudes – but maybe I can throw shoes at my wall – nobody would no any different and I might feel better for a minute – the world is in desparate need of healing and nobody wants to take responsibility!

I hope our new President Elect can get the ball rolling – we all have to start somewhere – but look what you have to work with!! its appalling! Thank you everyone everywhere with good hearts and good minds! the only HOPE left – regardless of yoiur religious (or not) beliefs!

I totally agree with Mrs. Laura Bush. But I do hope the Iraqi government will not execute the journalist, or even keep him in prison for more than 2 years. Now Mr. al-Zaidi is no longer a Joe Journalist. Being a journalist, he could write a book about it and sell it to a media company after he gets out. We respect freedom and personal properties.

Jim   December 28th, 2008 11:23 am ET

Wow!!!! Nothing quite like the Retardlican spin machine!!!!!! Take a negative and turn it into a positive. I was obvious the journalist and millions more are disgusted with the way the Bush Administration has handled the "war" in Iraq. But leave it to the Retardlican spin machine to present it as "well they must be feeling a lot more free now because they can throw shoes at foreign dignitaries". When will it ever stop? I just wish the Retardlicans would go lick a window for the next hundred years and let the country recover from the damage they have caused.

Sue   December 28th, 2008 11:23 am ET

Thank you for speaking for millions of us, al-Zaidi. I only wish your shoe met its target. Laura, it's time to realize that your husband is internationally reviled. You're not garnering any sympathy. He has the blood of hundreds of thousands of souls on his hands. A shoe in the face is nothing compared to what he truly deserves. I look to God to mete out his final punishment. I hope it's a doozy.

Scott Alexander   December 28th, 2008 11:20 am ET

I wonder if Laura's amused by the hundreds of thousands of deaths her husband and his administration is responsible for. Strange how she never makes any comments about that (perhaps since its not her family, she doesn't care).

I always liked Laura Bush. No matter what people think of Her husband who I think we should respect because He is the President of the US. I love how gracious she is and also beautiful.

She should be offended about the shoe incident because that's her husband who she loves.

Good-Bye First Lady.

BB   December 28th, 2008 11:19 am ET

I know that the anti-Bush folks got a lot of mileage out ot the shoe throwing incident, but I think it proved our actions in Iraq made it possible for some idiot to throw anything at leaders of Iraq and the US and not fear for his life. I believe that Mrs. Bush was exactly right when she said that if that had happened under Saddam Hussein's rule, the shoe-thrower would not have made it out of the room alive. So I guess we did some good.

“Iraqis feel a lot freer to express themselves.”

...and are then free to get beaten and have their bones broken.

Anon   December 28th, 2008 11:18 am ET

Stop lavishing praise on your husband. "As you know, he's a natural athlete." No, he isn't. Be quiet! No one wants to hear from you anymore. (Maybe no one ever did.)

Rob in CA.   December 28th, 2008 11:16 am ET

The president "laughed it off", the same way he does the war in Iraq. He's a liar and a war criminal who deserves a much more severe punishment.

Bob from LA   December 28th, 2008 11:14 am ET

She hasn't got a clue.

Jed   December 28th, 2008 11:13 am ET

Laura, I think you're an ok person but your husband is a murderer. The song "stand by your man" comes to mind. I wouldn't expect you to think it was funny but it is more than people in Iraq expressing themselves.

TexAnnie *-*-*-*-*   December 28th, 2008 11:07 am ET

Pretty sad that Laura, not necessarily the brightest bulb in the box herself, is still the brains in that family.

Godluvr   December 28th, 2008 11:07 am ET

Actually, it was an insult to all Americans. It showed the world how deep the resentments are for President Bush, and he represents all of us. I pray that President-Elect Barack Obama can reverse the evil curse of ill-will during his terms. God bless us all, and Happy New Year to all!

Sarah McMaster   December 28th, 2008 11:07 am ET

Oh, boo-hoo! Do we honestly care about whether Laura is upset over an Iraqi throwing a shoe at her loser husband? Why not ask her if she's upset about all of those 4,000+ pairs of empty boots which were returned from Iraq? Her husband's decisions led those empty boots; how about a tear, Laura?......

christa   December 28th, 2008 11:06 am ET

Laura has always been a poster child for a Stepford wife; why change now?

Rickymo   December 28th, 2008 11:05 am ET

Would all you Bush's please just go away.

AB   December 28th, 2008 11:03 am ET

You know what the say Laura, if the shoe fits wear it.

The way Bush ducked, it made me wonder if Laura Bush didn't throw things at him on a regular basis. There are a number of people around the world that applaud the Iraqi reporter for expressing the way many of us feel about Bush. Bush deserved it .

arc, Lugano CH   December 28th, 2008 11:01 am ET

The left shoe represented the hearts of the Iraqi people and his right shoe represented the minds of the Iraqi people.

Muntadhar al-Zaidi deserves to be freed without prosecution. He is a hero. Many proud Americans, myself included, support his statement against The (not our) War Criminal Republican President.

BB   December 28th, 2008 10:57 am ET

Bush deserves more prison time than that poor man is getting. We need to hold Bush and Cheney accountable.
