First-of-its-kind RNC meeting to be held in Washington

RNC chair Mike Duncan faces a tough race to keep the top spot.
RNC chair Mike Duncan faces a tough race to keep the top spot.

(CNN) - Members of the Republican National Committee are planning to hold a Washington forum for candidates to lead the party – the first time they have held an official meeting not arranged by the national party.

The meeting, first reported by The Hill, was the brainchild of North Dakota Republican Party chairman Gary Emineth and nearly two dozen RNC members from 18 states, according to the RNC counsel’s office.

Most of those are supporters of one of the challengers to current RNC chair Mike Duncan. The newly-scheduled forum – which was not arranged by national leadership, headed by Duncan - may give a boost to these candidates, who will get an opportunity to make their pitch to the members of the national committee.

Under RNC rules, a minimum of 16 members from 16 different states is required to hold an official meeting – but CNN has not been able to find any prior instance when this rule has been invoked.

The meeting comes in a week of faceoffs and public grillings for RNC chair hopefuls - some open to the public, others private events for conservatives and party members.

Are they gonna scribe another nativist jingle?
It's not a party, it's a gang of social neanderthals displaying their true colors with their hate speech sprinkled with fear. Progress or get the hell of the way!

Is Palin going to be there because she sure will feel right at home with those bunch of unstable and racist republicans or is she too busy winking and flirting with the camera

Two words, Be an "Inclusive party!" and that would solve most there problems if they continue to be divisive and they will be treated like the legion of doom. Wrapping your self in religion till it strangles the life out of your party is not recommended either...

As an independent, I think both parties have serious problems, and have been longing for a viable 3rd or 4th party for years. The only thing worse than what we currently have would be a one-party state.... no matter which it was, Democrat OR Republican!

So all I can hope is these Republicans taking this unusual step are moderates who can take back the party from the far-right neocons and give the majority of us Americans (moderates!!!) a true choice. I'd still like to see MORE choice however....

And Pat – whoever you are, you need to relax!

The times they are a changin'. I honestly think that the Republicans will have to abandon the ignorant among them. I believe there are some good Republicans out there that put their country and not ideology first. They will need to run someone like Jindal and get him to the convention before they will start to mend their party. It will take something like that to prove to the country they have changed.

    If they don't:

    (a) give Ron Paul a decent hearing, and
    (b) get rid of the self-righteous, intolerant, bible-thumpers,

I don't care what the RNC does.

The Republican Party had the White House, the Congress, and the Supreme Court ... and demonstrated to all the world that it was morally and politically bankrupt. Yes, they could win elections, but they have nearly destroyed this country.... and it will be a very long time before we ever trust them again.

    Have good meeting, guys.

Do the Republicans actually believe that they have a chance of reinventing themselves like they did in the past, with these nut jobs at the top? They forget that in history when the Republicans were able to reinvent themselves and become relevant again, those were different times.

Times are changing and my generation is not tolerating the 'White people will be the minority in the future so we must fight for our power and hate others' mentality. Fear mongering. I enjoy knowing that I live in a country where we don't have to oppress others to feel superior and we can all share power and everyone can achieve the American dream regardless of color. This is what the RNC needs to understand or prepare to be extinct!

That's not an earthquake out in California–it's Ronald Reagan turning over in his grave. He'd be ashamed of his party now–and practically everyone on here. The Democrats have found their Reagan in Barack Obama. The Republicans will continue to wander aimlessly until they find one themselves, and get back to his ideals and principles.

Good old loyal Bushie conservative Republican Senator Larry Craig is now, finally, out of a job - why not make him head of the RNC?

He's the perfect example of the blatant hypocrisy & unhealthy schizoprenia that the current Republican Party has come to represent...

And they want to be taken seriously????? What a joke!

The RNC is doing just fine in it's current form. This is just a quick meeting to make sure the flag is wrapped around them so the bible is closer to their heart and therefore closer to Jesus.

They are also going to come up with a new dress code, all those brown shirts have become obvious...
