Shanklin’s album is stirring new controversy among conservatives.

(CNN) – Republican Party reaction remains divided over the decision of a candidate for party chairman to distribute a CD that featured the parody tune “Barack the Magic Negro,” with the majority of Chip Saltsman’s political rivals criticizing the move.

Republican National Committee Chairman Mike Duncan – battling to keep his job as head of the party – was the first prominent member of the GOP to criticize Saltsman for sending committee members the song.

Watch: Saltsman's CD makes waves in the party

"The 2008 election was a wake-up call for Republicans to reach out and bring more people into our party," RNC Chairman Mike Duncan said in a Saturday statement.

"I am shocked and appalled that anyone would think this is appropriate, as it clearly does not move us in the right direction."

Michigan party chairman Saul Anuzis also questioned Saltsman’s judgment. "In my opinion, this isn't funny and its in bad taste," he said in a statement. "Just as important, anything that paints the GOP as being motivated in our criticism of President-elect Obama by anything other than a difference in philosophy does a disservice to our party."

Republican Party of Florida Chairman Jim Greer – who has reportedly been weighing a run for the party’s top spot, but has not officially announced a bid - released a Monday morning statement praising candidates who have weighed in against the "racially-insulting song."

“As the GOP Chairman in one of our nation’s most ethnically and culturally diverse states, I am especially disappointed by the inappropriate words and actions we’ve seen over the past few days," he said. "I am proud of those party leaders who have stood up in firm opposition to this type of behavior."

"Actions such as the distribution of this CD, regardless of intent, only serves to promote divisiveness and distracts us from our common goal of building our party."

Saltsman sent RNC members the parody CD "We Hate the USA" for Christmas, which includes the controversial tune. He defended his decision Friday, telling CNN the song was clearly intended as a joke.

"I think most people recognize political satire when they see it," Saltsman told CNN. "I think RNC members understand that."

Saltsman, a former chair of the Tennessee Republican Party, was a top advisor to former Senate Majority Leader Bill Frist and managed former Arkansas Gov. Mike Huckabee's presidential campaign.

He is one of several candidates running to replace Duncan in the closely contested race to lead the Republican Party.

The song, set to the tune of the 1960s pop hit "Puff the Magic Dragon," was first played on Rush Limbaugh's radio show in 2007. Its title was drawn from a Los Angeles Times column that suggested Obama appealed to those who feel guilty about the nation's history of mistreatment of African-Americans.

Saltsman said the song, penned by long-time friend Paul Shanklin, should be easily recognized as satire directed at the Times.

The CD includes parody songs referencing former Democratic presidential candidate John Edwards and the Rev. Jeremiah Wright, among other targets.

Ken Blackwell – on of two African-American candidates for party chair – agreed with Saltsman’s assessment, defending him in a weekend statement. "Unfortunately, there is hypersensitivity in the press regarding matters of race,” said the former Ohio secretary of state – who, if elected, would be the first black chairman of the RNC. “This is in large measure due to President-Elect Obama being the first African-American elected president.

“I don't think any of the concerns that have been expressed in the media about any of the other candidates for RNC chairman should disqualify them. When looked at in the proper context, these concerns are minimal. All of my competitors for this leadership post are fine people."

But some younger members of the party were less understanding, as the debate over the satire spread through conservative circles. James Richardson, the RNC’s online communication manager for the 2008 cycle, called Saltsman’s move “quite the revealing faux pas.”

“Granted, he didn’t pull a George Allen and personally call Obama a ‘magic negro,’ but sending a CD with those lyrics shortly after electing the first African American President – one supported by nearly 97% of the African American community – shows a serious lack of judgment, tact, and the necessary level of racial sensitivity expected of public officials,” wrote Richardson, a Red State contributor, on conservative blog The Skepticians.

“And while I’m sure Saltsman doesn’t espouse racist sentiments, this will undoubtedly be spun as an angry, white Southerner stoking the flames of racial tensions after losing to a minority candidate. Hell, why don’t we go ahead and give ‘em the other 3%, too, Chip?”

Most of the candidates for RNC chairman – including Saltsman, Anuzis, Blackwell and Greer – will face off in one week in Washington in a public debate sponsored by Americans for Tax Reform. Duncan, who has been invited, has not yet confirmed his attendance.

What every racist excuse here boils down to:

"well bet if (insert comedian here) said that no one would have a problem with it!"

False arguement. I don't think you'd ever see a "McCain the Magic Cracker" parody is because liberals can very simply find funnier things to say than 3rd grade neener-neener humor.

"people are upset at this because we're apologizing. Going toward the center is what lost us the election!"

No, the truth is that pandering to idiots like you is what lost the Republicans the election. The GOP could drift left for about a mile and still be too far to the right for most Americans.

"but we are the party of Lincoln. We can't hate blacks. "

You're also the party of Southern Strategy, Contract With America, the Christian Coalition and boast members who think that the only good liberal is a dead liberal. Failed logic.

"liberals can't take a joke. "

The joke's only funny when both people are laughing. You also confuse satire with derision.

"but black comedians use the n word all the time!"

Yeah, and unless you are black guess what? You can't use it. Don't think that's fair? Well guess what else? The only thing fare in life is what you pay for a cab. Which interestingly enough is something that black people have a hard time hailing. Which you wouldn't get because you're not black.

I rest my case.

When Tina Fey made fun of Palin, that was satire.

When Al Franken made fun of Rush Limbaugh, that was satire.

Saltsman calling Obama "The Magic Negro", is not satire. It's racist.

Saltsman wouldn't last 5 seconds in Harlem, or South L.A.

Ken   December 29th, 2008 4:00 pm ET

@ NY Republican: if you cannot tell the difference between the SNL Palin parody and the Obama ethnic CD, then shame on you. Mind you, I think both have the "right" to be in the public domain, and judged there. But for you neo-nuggets to lamely try to defend the latter from the public judgement by equating it to the former is sheer stupidity, a sure sign of why your party is in the shape it is.

@BDV: the the southern United States has been bashed in these comments not because of WHERE they are but because of WHAT they did: they voted for the failure-in-charge Bush twice, and proudly so it seems. I'm afraid there's nothing prejudicial in that: it is based on the fact that most of the southern states are red. And then after two stints of abject failure with Bush, only the red states of Dumbf-kistan would go for the tri-fecta of failure by voting for McCain this past Nov. If the "south" has an image of being slack-jawed idiots, they come about it honestly - not prejudiciously.

NYDoc   December 29th, 2008 3:50 pm ET

Hey Noah, you are absolutely right about the history of the republican & democratic parties. During LBJ time, black-Americans began voting largely democratic, while at the same time the Southern half of the US switched from traditionally democratic to republican mainly because LBJ was seen as giving black-Americans more rights (and the south clearly did not ike that). Since that time, the republicans have catered to racist members of the US (which unfortunately for all the normal people living below the mason dixon line, the majority of these racist reside in the south, but not exclusively). They still pander to those racist/bigots as seen in the Palin-McCain presidential campaign.

Your party just put out a CD with a song titled "Barack the magic Negro" and you are claiming they are not racist. Listen to yourself for a second, you sound rediculous. That's pretty much the definition of a racist. If I put out a song called "Palin the skanky wh*re", you would have a right to be offended and to call me a sexist. (that statement was not meant to offend people, just to prove a point)

I saw comments that compared Saltsman sending this CD about Obama to Tina Fey's statire of Palin on SNL.

SNL is a satirical comedy show. Saltsman is supposedly a responsible politician who wants to head the Republican party. He ddin't send a very positive message about his party or himself.

Oh, wait! What was I thinking, the RNC is a comedy show.

It's obvious that no one's in charge at the GOP. The once-grand old party has been reduced to a pathetic little ragtag band of the paranoid, the selfish, the religious zealot, the bigot, the dim-witted, the greedhead, the anti-intellectual, and the war monger. Until they stop being a haven for the likes of this Saltsman, they will be relegated to a marginal status in American politics.

I find it absolutely astounding that the demotwits are finding this offensive even though they know it was a poor attempt at satire, but didn't find the emotional rantings of Barry Husseins' pastor Jeremiah to be offensive! That is what I find consistent with the liberal bloggers is that when their side does something idiotic they can explain it away, but if the other side does something then it's a death sentence.

Just another example of why the current RNC leadership needs to go. All of this kiss up trying to be "politically correct" about something that those of us familiar with Paul Shanklin know is humorous parody recordings is the nonsense that left you all in the minority. Pack up the rest of the sissies and get a real job and let us have some elected leaders to put forth a conservative agenda to be accepted or rejected. Not more falsehoods to try and sucker in a liberal to lean us more to the liberal agenda and hand us our butts in the elections in 2010.

The sad thing is that Paul Shanklin attended a Christian school and ought to know better than to write stuff like this. I can't believe that Jesus would be happy with Shanklin's brand of "comedy," or that he provides hateful material for someone like Limbaugh. I don't remember reading anywhere in the Bible "Make fun of your enemies or call them traitors when they disagree with you."

Who said Republicans hate 'African-Americans"? They hate Muslims, and many other people too. The Republican Party which freed the slaves is not the Republican party whose presidential candidate smiled as his supporters cried out to "Kill" President Elect Obama. Those Southern DemoDixiecrats who opposed Johnson 40 years ago are not the Democratic Party of today either. If anything, over time they evolved into southern Republicans. Which is, who I was referring too.

@ Bill, Streamland, IL,

Jindal and Romney are probably afraid to speak out;

I don't know about Thune; but,

I can tell you about Palin – she does not see a problem with the song or the CD; afterall, she has already stated small towns are the "real" America and who real Americans look like. Palin probably plays the CD in her office; her IT staff has allowed race-based emails concerning PE Obama to circulate through the State of Alaska's email system, without fear of reprimand.

The RNC is choosing to be overtly racist (under the failed disguise of satire) as a symbol of disrespect to PE Obama becoming the first minority President of the United States of America. These antics are literally teaching white youngsters to disrespect the newly elected PE. How sad.

GOP leaders -

You are so quick to say that the Republicans are the Party of Lincoln as a way to impy that you couldn't possibly be anti-black.

That, and $4.50, will get you a cup of coffee at Starbucks.

Americans don't trust the GOP whenever an African American or a Latino are involved. You will get NO benefit of the doubt. ZERO. Your past actions have earned this mistrust.

The only way for you to win Americans over will be to forcefully, and repeatedly repudiate any racial insensitivity and stop trying to explain it away as a joke, satire, mis-statement, a "misunderstanding", etc.

Suzanne   December 29th, 2008 3:18 pm ET

Palin / Saltsman, 2012!! I'd like to say it's just the disgusting Republicans who should be ashamed of themselves, but in reality, the vast majority of our politicians are morally bankrupt. America, where our politicians are bought and sold for a song and a campaign donation. You guys are a disgrace. For the love of God, I hope Obama is different. Please don't let us down. I don't know if we have that many chances left to get it right.

Jeff   December 29th, 2008 3:18 pm ET

Noah–You're sense of history is also pretty poor. If you look at what the Republican and Democratic parties stood for back then, you would see that their priorities have shifted dramatically. To say that the Republican party freed the slaves is technically correct. But in reality it means nothing because today's descendant has little in common with its ancestor.

Chris   December 29th, 2008 3:13 pm ET

Republicans just don't get it. They can piously intone how open they want the party to be, but this stunt, and the defense of frankly quite offensive speech, shows what they are.

Funny how they point to SNL parodies to excuse their behaviour, and talk about double standards.

Well, in a way they are right, but usually because the parodies of the Left are based on appealing to an educated population.

Republicans seem bent on reaching out to the lowest common denominator, and take pride in ignorance. Not the party of Lincoln, Eisenhower, or even Reagan anymore.

Seriously . . . stupidity and ignorance is being spouted in here from both Democrats and Republicans. Neither side is better than the other but unfortunately too many of you are too clueless to see past party lines or political dogma.

I don’t have much faith in America with the intelligence being shown in here . . . when a below average candidate like Obama is heralded as a historic choice for president just because he beat out another below average candidate then we really do have a problem. I don’t vote to make history due to race . . . I vote to make this country better. Too bad so many of you believed in hype over substance and felt that McCain and Obama were the best choices we had.

The GOP rightly has a reputation as the party that will play on white racist fears to win elections. This reputation was not started by the "Willie Horton" ad in 1988 but that is one very visible symbol of it that most political science students will recognize.

Other unspoken undercurrents in the political ether of some people's minds are that ...

Criminal black men want to rob & beat up white men
Black men want to forcibly "take" white women out of rage
Unqualified minorities want to take your job, Mr. White Man so that you can't provide for your family.

If I thought about it, I'm sure I could find others includind some very recent ones.

Saltsman says he wants to be a leader of the party. No leader, that is capable of leading the party to victory, would be STUPID enough to do this. It is exactly 180 degrees from what the Republicans need right now.

The GOP is like the American car industry in the 1970s .... it will be 30 years before they correct their quality problem.

Political satire is perfectly fine, we do it all the time but it came from the completely wrong group of people. If that same CD came from SNL or Mad TV or some group along those lines I think it would be perfectly alright because we know their sense of humor.

But since it came from the GOP i don't really think it was in the best of spirits, it would be naiieve to think that they were doing just a funny satire. To me it seems really bitter and childish coming from people that are supposed to be running this country.

Republicans in general are not funny. They have no sense of humor.

Remember that TV comedy show a few years back that had a GOP slant and tried to be like Stewart/Colbert?

(Neither do I. It bombed!)

Doug   December 29th, 2008 2:34 pm ET

I think it's hilarious. Come on people–lighten up!

Praetorian, Fort Myers   December 29th, 2008 2:33 pm ET

Just what we've come to expect from majority members of the Republican.

Too bad the leadership–can't fool the majority of us of the "real values, morals, and judgement" of the Republican Party. Greed, hatred, dishonesty, and disregard of human suffering bordering on Darwinizm-not characteristics of a lasting political party.

Noah   December 29th, 2008 2:30 pm ET

It was funny when Democrats slammed Sarah Palin and made up all kinds of disgusting songs about her but this is just pure bigotry! You liberals sure are great hypocrites, I will give you that.

VON BISMARK,Vienna.   December 29th, 2008 2:30 pm ET

This guy is a Dem in Repug garments.No sane man will carry out this racist act and means it's a joke.His avowed aim is to destroy the GOP. This sleazier than the Rev.Wright ad.
PATHETIC!

John   December 29th, 2008 2:29 pm ET

Saltsman and his ilk have never gotten over the fact that the South lost.They are against equality because they know they can never measure up. This leaves them the low road, race baiting, insults and fear mongering. So much for the "Grand Old Party'.

paul   December 29th, 2008 2:29 pm ET

This simply shows the true (racist) colors of the GOP.

bushisuseless   December 29th, 2008 2:28 pm ET

JC your a typical wingnutjob. the subject of this blog is about your good friend Saltsman. But anyway since you insist, People from around the world stop entering our Visa Lottery Sweepstake. because they realized that there's no such thing as American dream. Plus it appears our money is not going to worth anything anymore in the world market. The word is euros my dear Euros. Even the Arabian oilman is dumping their US dollar. As for people wanting to be like "us". That's a hoot. Because the latest I know people from other countries that we occupy can't wait to
throw us out. Don't worry JC nobody wants to be like you nobody wants to be stupid.. that's just crazy.

KJL   December 29th, 2008 2:26 pm ET

Interesting. I saw the video on Youtube and thought it was in bad taste, but it didn't seem that President-elect Obama was the main target. I wonder what Al Sharpton and Jesse Jackson thought of it?

The best thing is to just vote these racists out of office.

Bob   December 29th, 2008 2:25 pm ET

Oh, one other point. The author of that LA Times commentary, David Ehrenstein, is a black man. Go figure !

Farrell, Houston, Tx   December 29th, 2008 2:22 pm ET

Republicans should have stopped this when Sarah Palin started this mess and they sat back and said nothing, including John McCain.

Michelle in KC   December 29th, 2008 2:19 pm ET

I'm seriously beginning to question whether the Republicans are intentionally trying to sabotage their own party. There's no other explanation for this level of idiocy.

Wait... there is.

They're idiots.

Jasmine in Germany and NYC   December 29th, 2008 2:19 pm ET

So Saltsman wanted a little media attention and he got it. I would have preferred it if he had opposed the invasion of Iraq and not been such an avid Bush supporter over the years, but instead he proves that there is a educational deficit in Tennessee. Oh well, good thing change is on the way.

Clair   December 29th, 2008 2:16 pm ET

These reps do not learn from mistakes... tsk, tsk. Stupid. And why the overcry. Let them act like they really are... really smart move GOP! lol.

Bob from the real USA   December 29th, 2008 2:15 pm ET

What's troublesome about this is that the reaction from most of the RP is that it's not good for the party – not that it's just plain wrong regardless of the political consequences. Very telling.

Terry, Dallas Texas   December 29th, 2008 2:14 pm ET

I just love those who are using the right to free speech as the defense for this issue. One more time everyone. Freedom of speech means that you have the right to say whatever you want without fear of being arrested for it. But just because you get to say it does not mean that we have to like it or accept it.

Keith Bonney   December 29th, 2008 2:13 pm ET

I'm refreshed to see that most republicans are rejecting this moronic melody, and to those I reach out to in hopes that they can take there party back.

She beginning to split and Chip Saltsman has seen to that, so he's an enemy to his own party he drove a bigger wedge through it then obama ever could.

Millie2640   December 29th, 2008 2:12 pm ET

It's one thing to parody someone for a stupid comment (I can see Russia from my house) and quite another thing to parody based on race. So for all you people comparing this to what SNL did to Palin, it is not the same thing. She made many mistakes/gaffs in comments and Joe Biden as well. Both have been made fun of by SNL and others. So, if you don't want to be made fun of, don't make stupid comments. But making fun of someone's race is entirely inappropriate!

Tanya Kujath   December 29th, 2008 2:12 pm ET

Absolutely Sickening!!!!!!!!!!!!!

David from Kentucky   December 29th, 2008 2:11 pm ET

And this guy wants to run a national political party? He's an idiot and an good example of whats wrong with the present Republican Party.

Matthew, Houston, TX   December 29th, 2008 2:10 pm ET

It isn't a joke to say that anyone who isn't a white Republican hates the USA. As a centrist who is often lumped in with liberals (no necessarily a bad thing), I have been called anti-American, socialist, an adulterer, a thief and much worse just because I did not agree with the conservative line 100%.

It's not even the content of the song that makes this so bad, it's the idea being sent that anyone who isn't like you or doesn't think like you must hate their country. I served my time in the military to protect my country and resent it when I'm told I hate America just because I'm not a conservative.

This is why there is such outrage, this is why the Republican party and conservatism is on it's way out. You guys just don't get it and probably never will.

Phoenix   December 29th, 2008 2:10 pm ET

I am a black American who is not amazed at the level of bigotry spewed especially by whites who feel that somehow Obama is a symbol of all they have lost (including their minds). Go on, please support this CD so that you can continue to isolate yourselves in the midst of your dying ideals. I really am sorry for those white Americans who do not hold these values, but unfortunately, they get clumped with these sort of goons.

kayla   December 29th, 2008 2:09 pm ET

Satire wow a new word for racism. Yes, everyone is entitled to free speech agreed. But must we accept stupidity with it?

Michael Templer   December 29th, 2008 2:07 pm ET

you know in 2004 I was afraid of an ending like this. We won the election but did it in the wrong way. This kind of thing will give Obama even more of honey moon the would have been.

This Generation of Republicans only know how to do one thing

Attack and be hateful

Where is Ronald Regan's optimism

where is Goldwater's Conservatism

so not only are you stupid but you are hatefull despite the circumstances.

We can't afford for the next president to fail so we can get a Republican in there in 2012!!

Republicans enjoy being in the Minority for the forseable future

as a black Republican that voted for Obama

we can't afford to let you run the country any more

give the Liberals a chance

they certainly can't screw it up any worse than you have

and what ever money they are going to spend will at least be on us and not wasteful wars and Haliburton.

Maggie SC   December 29th, 2008 2:05 pm ET

tHE PERSON COMPOSING THAT SONG EVEN IF CLAIMING TO BE A rUPBLICAN MUST BE HIDING HE SNTI REPUBLICAN VIEWS. IT IS BAD TAAST TO THROW THINGS LIKE THAT AT OBAMA AND i AM A REPUBLICAN. IT THROWS A BAD LIGHT ON ALL THE REST OF US REPUBLICANS/

APPOLIZE OR GET OUT OF OUR PARTY.

Bob   December 29th, 2008 2:05 pm ET

This is exactly why I am a progressive. While the world has moved on, the conservative movement is stuck in its tainted, contrarian history.

All of the truly great accomplishments of this country, from the American Revolution to the New Deal to the Civil Rights Movement, have been progressive. Some people just don't get it, and Mr. Saltsman is clearly within that camp.

atypical   December 29th, 2008 2:05 pm ET

VHale   December 29th, 2008 2:03 pm ET

If only the song had been making fun of Sarah Palin it would have been so much more acceptable.

California Girl   December 29th, 2008 2:02 pm ET

They keep doing stupid stuff like this and it always gets them in trouble. A woman out here in Ca who was president of some local repub group did something similar. It just shows how silly, petty, and redneck they actually are. And "redneck" is not a compliment and does not describe "Average Americans." As long as they think it is funny to do this stuff, they will suffer the consequences.

Charles Atlanta   December 29th, 2008 1:59 pm ET

Well.. you have to let these GOP flush out from history. It will take time but eventually they will become irrelavent from our society. These people include Limbough and Hannity that never understand why majority American do not want Republican brand anymore. Great majority of young generation are attracted to the Democratic party because they can find cohesion of their life. Be honest, there is no comparison between Obama and McCain. Obama is simply a better leader choice, period.

Anthony from NJ   December 29th, 2008 1:58 pm ET

It's not surprising a high-ranking republican official was making this CD because the GOP focuses on immaterial issues of morality and religion rather than making ethical determinations about problems severely effecting our country. It's no surprise the elephant is becoming the newest endangered species in Washington, D.C.

Texas   December 29th, 2008 1:58 pm ET

Forget "Barack the Magic Negro." How insulting is it to over half the country that the Republicans sent out a 'parody' CD basically implying that all non-Republicans "hate the USA" ? More than just African Americans should be offended. The Republican Pary needs to get its act together if it wants to continue on with the rest of us into the 21st century.

LM75   December 29th, 2008 1:58 pm ET

It's appalling how most of the Republicans are raciest.

Stupid is as stupid does   December 29th, 2008 1:58 pm ET

How dumb are Republicans???

I remember when "Dumb and Dumber" was a movie, now it's a Republican documentary.

Anthony from NJ   December 29th, 2008 1:55 pm ET

A white guy made the CD, so it is clearly racism. If a black person made it, it would be deemed funny, and copies would be sold nationwide. Racism exists but is perpetuated by the people who bother to listen to it. If you ignore it, realizing bigots are ignorant, maybe they wouldn't continually get the media spotlight with their remarks.

Eyckie   December 29th, 2008 1:54 pm ET

By George: This isn't making fun of someone. It's degrading, racist and bigotted. There is nothing funny about stirring racial tensions and insulting the new President of the United States. This is a personal attack on Mr. Obama, nothing more and nothing less. Anyone can call this free speech but when it's hate speech it should be illegal like it is in most other 'civilized' western countries.

Mike, Syracuse NY   December 29th, 2008 1:54 pm ET

I'm just loving all the liberals with their phoney outrage. They blast Reps for dividing us then go on anti-Republican tirades. I've heard Bush, McCain and Palin called far worse right here on this blog than anything in the song. Did you even listen to it? Is your phoney outrage supposed to bring us together? If you beleve your messiah's message, try being less rabid partisans. Your vicious comments show true hippocracy and prove that hate is very much alive and well in the Democratic Party.

VB Lincoln Park NJ   December 29th, 2008 1:53 pm ET

It's no surprise that a racist song like that was aired on rush limboob's stupid, sub-moronic radio show.l

GOP now stands for Goofy Old Pinheads.l

CH in Maine   December 29th, 2008 1:52 pm ET

"WE HATE AMERICA" their title says it all. It would also be true with a comma. "WE HATE, AMERICA". I never hated America.

David   December 29th, 2008 1:47 pm ET

Is there really a purpose for the existence of the republic party, besides being a hiding place for white color criminals, racists, the under-educated and those in conflict/fear with anyone not like them or who do not think like them. Maybe a better question is... 'what is their purpose that benefits the United States of America??'

Dee Tee Gee   December 29th, 2008 1:47 pm ET

As much as I'm pleased with the election of President Obama, I'm more pleased with what the 2008 presidential election has uncovered. There's a lot of people who believe & want everyone to believe that racism doesn't exist anymore, that all of a sudden the group of people who in the past treated people of color terribly have dramatically changed, that their train of thought has changed. We're seeing concrete evidence that it hasn't. I'm not surprised by this behavior. Disappointed, but not surprised. But the people who are saying these racially charged things need to realize that this isn't 1958, when black people had to sit there & be treated like dogs & couldn't do anything about it. Progress has definitely been made in that area.

Nancy in MN   December 29th, 2008 1:45 pm ET

Marc in Virginia: Come on, people, lighten up! It was just a joke. I don't think any of you would mind "McCain the Magic Honkey".

Marc – Really? That's what you think? I suppose I have to say it then. I would really mind that and would not think it was funny or appropriate.

Jay   December 29th, 2008 1:44 pm ET

Gotcha! (Obviously a Palin Supporter),

As an African-American man, who is also a republican I find this CD to be insulting to our culture and our haritage. This CD isn't about the "Mystery" of the president elect its about pure racsim once again coming from the south. I did vote for Obama, and this is the reason why. Too much division from the GOP they need to find themselves!

Rorschach   December 29th, 2008 1:43 pm ET

I'd like to know how these Republicans justify the "We Hate the USA" finger they keep pointing at Democrats.

What makes these people think they have the market cornered on patriotism?

Loving your country doesn't mean you have to agree with, or accept without scrutiny, the actions and attitudes of the party in power. Patriotism isn't blind obedience. Sometimes being patriotic means loving your country enough to say "That's Enough".

NC Dan   December 29th, 2008 1:43 pm ET

It amazes me how some people like Chip Saltsman not only don't learn, but absolutely refuse to. Especially after their world view gets a severe smack-down, like the one delivered to the GOP on November 4th.

Liberals don't hate America, Mr. Saltsman. Just dimbulbs like you who try to divide it.

neb   December 29th, 2008 1:42 pm ET

be serious people, you are just speaking in this form because the song is about obama, don't tell me that in your own personal lives, these types of comments don't come out of your mouths - hiding behind your own words and not being natural - i guess everyone likes to hide behind doors huh!!!

walleye   December 29th, 2008 1:42 pm ET

Well the REPS have shown their true colors, and they are not Red, White and Blue. Thank God these morons lost the election. Can you imagine a bunch of Bigots running our country. Time to oust the rest of them out of public office and send them to the sewers where they came from.

Shannon   December 29th, 2008 1:41 pm ET

The GOP will probably never get the black or Latino vote back ever again. They have shown themselves to be the party of white people only. They can not even lose an election gracefully and embrace our new president. They have shown themselves to be filled with hatred and bigotry, they are not inclusive, they have become a very divisive and polarizing group of people.

happy new year   December 29th, 2008 1:40 pm ET

your party did a disservice to pe obama during the whole presidencial campaign, especially palin and all her silly talking about parts of america being better than other parts and all the racist remarks made by so many of you.

Ghost   December 29th, 2008 1:39 pm ET

Well, the point here isn't whether or not it is racists, it is the perception that matters. You people who point out Oberman, Stewart and the likes are missing one important point: none of them are politican figures.

Folks like Blackwell and Michael Steele need a visit by the Drop Squad. As the republican voice of the black community, they should be less quick to support whatever brain dead premise their party come sup with and more apt to at least understand where some of the things they defend could be offensive to other black folk. Even Armstrong Williams was able to admit the wrong that his party had done.

And lastly, had the republican party not shown this entire election cycle that it participated in these types of antics, we probably wouldn't be so quick to doubt the satire excuse.

Kid Politic   December 29th, 2008 1:37 pm ET

What about the disgraceful and untrue attacks against George Bush?

Grow up children. Welcome to politics.

tony   December 29th, 2008 1:35 pm ET

Republicans who call Obama "messiah" (let's face it, only the Republicans do) should give it a rest. It is odd that the Republicans, the party of the Religious Right, do not know that it is blasphemous to call any human being messiah. Anyway, Obama did not have to be the "messiah" to beat the Republicans in this election. Anyone could have done it. If McCain had run as a Democrat he could have beaten any ticket with Palin on it. The fact that some Republicans do not appear to understand this is great news for the Democrats.

Janel, St. Paul, MN   December 29th, 2008 1:34 pm ET

One good thing about this disgusting decision by Mr. Saltsman is that his political objectives are probably dead. Perhaps he can join Rush Lindbaugh on his radio show. They seem to share the same juvenile sense of humor.

Veteran in Kansas   December 29th, 2008 1:34 pm ET

I am today ashamed to be a Repulbilcan, even more so than watching the party ran into the ground with the likes of Cheney and Bush. Even if meant as a satire, it has no place in America today. And to be truthful I do not think for a moment it was meant only as a little humor. This is cheesy, racist politics at its worst. Unfortunetly, while some will chuckle and laugh there remains an element of ignorant individuals that will laugh at and carry on the song that will rally to the song.

I never though I would see the day that the Republican party treated race in such a manner. The party of lincoln, the party of abolitionist, a total disgrace

Michael   December 29th, 2008 1:33 pm ET

Republicans allowing racism to penetrate their party?? I am SHOCKED!!! Just SHOCKED I tell you!!! What do you expect all the Southern racist democrats party realigned and are now part of the modern Republican party. The Democratic party is no longer what it was back in the past and the Republican party is no longer the party of Lincoln. Fine by me, it will result in Democratic dominance for years if not decades to come.

Eloy Gracia   December 29th, 2008 1:33 pm ET

Oh, you Lefties that are calling the Reps racists, hows old KKK grand wizard Senator Byrd doing?
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Senator Byrd made amends for his mistakes and asked for forgiveness.
When McCain/Palin supporters cried out to "Kill" President Obama for being and "Arab" and a "Terrorist", or when other 'Country First' voters proudly told their children on TV that you would need "Gloves to touch Obama", the true face of the GOP and Conservatives was seen around the world; and the present universal disgust and disdain that is rightfully directed at Republican Conservatives is beautiful.
Texas Teacher   December 29th, 2008 1:31 pm ET
Obviously we have a repub commentator today.... *grin* ... nothing the old texas teacher has to say is note worthy?
The republicans had better condemn this garbage. There is such a thing as political humor, but obviously the author of this ignorance does not know the difference. If the democrats had written and used such a song about….mmmm… say Sarah Palin. The RNC would have come after the DNC like a lynch mob on a Saturday Night… hoods and all! :)
shucks   December 29th, 2008 1:31 pm ET
All minorities inclucing African Americans, gays, and women are only useful to most of the republican party at election time when they need votes. Any other time they couldn't care less. I understand their religious attacks against gays and women, but the only thing I can think of that shows the African American population the true feelings of the Republican party recently would be Hurricane Katrina. Enough said!!
Anne   December 29th, 2008 1:24 pm ET
Where were these people when Rush Limbaugh started playing this song on his radio show a year ago? If they were actually offended, they should have addressed it long before now. Obama is being sworn in three weeks from now- it's too little too late. Maybe by 2012, the RNC will put out a statement to say that people shouting out the N-word at McCain-Palin speeches was inappropriate as well.
Newport News, VA   December 29th, 2008 1:24 pm ET
This is tasteless and has no place in american politics
Debbie   December 29th, 2008 1:23 pm ET
To Matt- The difference between making fun of Bush and making fun of Obama is that Obama is being made fun with a racist slant. He has absolutely no control over what race he is born as- just like me or you.
Bush on the other hand, has willfully made decisions based on ignorance and stubborness that he could have done differently.
Obama is being made fun of for who he is, Bush for what he is.
Laverne   December 29th, 2008 1:21 pm ET
This should not be just swept under the rug. Saltsman should be publically humiliated by his comments/CD and held accountable for them. God continue to bless Obama and be with him and forgive the ignorance of some, for they know not what they do.
shucks   December 29th, 2008 1:20 pm ET
I do feel sorry for all the brilliant men and women who are part of the GOP/RNC. Both parties have their nitwits, but it is time for those who aren't to stop allowing their party to be this divisive entity that tolerates these kind of behaviors. By not speaking up and demanding that these people take responsibility for their actions shows the country that they really believe what is being said or done. A lack of interest and not demanding accountability is the most damaging thing they can do to their party.
maryam   December 29th, 2008 1:16 pm ET
Obviously, the lot of GOP/RNC haven't got over their racial issues. There are still two distinct 'colors' out there in clear visibility: White and Black. The former being the supreme and the latter, obviously, still considered the 'negro'. Perhaps losing a few more elections will wake these 'annoyed bunch of people' up! There are 2 wars, bad climates in our economy (and more to follow), plus the world in shamble yet the RNC still ranting the racial drum! When will we ever get over our hang ups?
Apples for sale   December 29th, 2008 1:16 pm ET
“Granted, he didn’t pull a George Allen and personally call Obama a ‘magic negro,’ but sending a CD with those lyrics shortly after electing the first African American President – one supported by nearly 97% of the African American community – shows a serious lack of judgment, tact, and the necessary level of racial sensitivity expected of public officials,” wrote Richardson, a Red State contributor, on conservative blog The Skepticians.
“And while I’m sure Saltsman doesn’t espouse racist sentiments, this will undoubtedly be spun as an angry, white Southerner stoking the flames of racial tensions after losing to a minority candidate. Hell, why don’t we go ahead and give ‘em the other 3%, too, Chip?”
Sherrol in Canada   December 29th, 2008 1:04 pm ET
Interested bystander   December 29th, 2008 12:56 pm ET
The song is not funny. What's funny is watching the GOP self-destruct. These types of things are going to happen because that's they type of people that make up and lead the GOP...they can't help being themselves; the truth will always shine through. Choosing a new RNC chairman is like rearranging deck chairs on the Titanic: it's a futile exercise, but they just don't know it yet.
Vegas Barbie for Obama   December 29th, 2008 12:55 pm ET
To BW and all those "he's half white and half black": People, he is black. If you look black in this country, you are black, no matter what your composition. Remember that there used to be a law on the books (probably still is in some Southern states) that if you had ONE DROP of African blood in you you were black and thus, one-fifth of a human being. And as PE Obama said in the interview that was rebroadcast last night as part of "60 Minutes" feature on Obama's road to the White House, "I don't get this question (re: is he "black enough") walking down the streets of South Chicago and the same issue presents itself when I try to get a cab. He is our first Black president. Bottom line and we should be proud to see it and say it, even though it is very late in coming (still 43-1 white Presidents to Black).
Well, chipper old boy, looks like you sealed your fate. you are a total loser. when is the rnc going to realize they are what is wrong with this country. Racial hatred is still alive and well in the USA. when are they going to realize that if you are not a Native American, than you are part of the big melting pot that makes up the USA. I am so sick and tired of their attitude "oh it was just a joke". Well I can take a joke a well as the next person, but this has got to stop. I think all those that feel their race is superior should go and start their own country. It would be filled with a bunch of stupid racist & dumb bells. They could all hate each other.
If they would stop and think, they would realize that is ONE reason the repub party lost the election (among other reasons). People want to get along and get on with the business of repairing the country that was destroyed by the repubs over the last eight years.
Maggie from Virginia   December 29th, 2008 12:51 pm ET
There's actually something positive coming out of this... These antics will no longer divide us, that's what the bigots fail to realize. By the way, there's bigotry in both parties; but for some reason, the Republican Party is infested.
After seeing all the different races come together to reject hate this election cycle, nothing will shake my belief that we are truly becoming one nation. Just remember, the closer we get to unity, the harder racists will fight to stop us. We will overcome!
Honestly people, let's sort the issue:
1. People have a right to free speech
2. Political groups have the right to free speech
3. People have the right to judge either for exercise of said right.
In short: funny or not, it is inappropriate for ANY party to mail this kind of divisive, insulting, and hating material to their members. Why would anyone think that as a good idea? Did they never play a game at school? Any 4th grader can tell you after the competition it's all "good game" to the opposing side.
Anuzis made a sensible statement. The RNC would do well do focus on highlighting the policy differences between them and Obama's administration rather than making "jokes" about Obama's race that aren't even funny. My problem with the joke isn't that I thought it was racist. It's that you have to have a pretty lame sense of humor if you found it funny.
Anuzis should be the RNC chairman. He's the only one that gets it. At the end of the day it isn't even about whether the song is racist.
The offensiveness of the offense is only offensive if the offended takes offense. I've always wanted to say that. Realistically, I'm a card carrying republican and I think distribution of the CD was inappropriate by any member of the RNC. I think that it was a tasteless gesture that should have never started to begin with. Face it, the Republican Party is taking some serious hits and some need to read the writing on the wall. We do not need our party leadership doing stupid stuff. In my eye, that was pretty stupid.
Years back, the GOP had their own version of the merry pranksters, known as the New Jersey Rat Finks. This lovely group put together a songbook including something that makes the currently condemned song look like a kids nursery rhyme. For those who forget, it went to the song Jingle bells and began "Riding through the Reich..." It was a condemnation of the racist and anti-semetic leanings of so many in the party. Things have not changed and, as a result, expect that this little ditty (which I have not heard, since I don't need that running around in my head, too) will be hummed and cherished even as it is condemned.
As a fairly new CNN blog reader I'm struck by a predominant theme in most of the posts, us against them. It occurs to me that our country became great with an attitude of "We the People." We the people will make our country great again, respected by the rest of the world as a model for democracy, respected by the rest of the world for our free economy and respected by the rest of the world because of our human rights policies. In order for this to happen, however, we must first start to respect each other regardless of how diverse our opinions might be.
Most of the country really doesn't know just how racist the south is... it's ugly down here. I am appalled to hear some of the stuff that comes out of my neighbor's mouths and they haven't a clue how nasty they sound.
It's time for America to really look closely at ourselves. We all pretend that we're all past "all that", but really, we are not. Wouldn't it be nice if "conservative" wasn't synonymous with "bigot" or "racist"? I sure don't see many examples of that...
Beverly, NYC   December 29th, 2008 12:24 pm ET
Jerzjen   December 29th, 2008 12:24 pm ET
I guess I'm confused. If Blackwell thinks people are hypersensitive right now, wouldn't that be all the more reason to criticize Saltsman's so called joke. If the RNC wants to attract minorities shouldn't it expect its chairman to know the atmosphere and attitudes of one of the group's its hoping to attract? Does Saltsman really think that this behavior will attract African-Americans to the Republican party? Or is he sending a message that come to the RNC but know your place when you do? Or is this behavior another example of an RNC bigwig being in denial about the change this country has undergone in the past year. What may not have gotten much press in 2007, certainly attracks attention in 2008. And lets be honest, Rush Limbaugh has never been a fan of anyone who isn't a White Right Wing Conservative Republican!
I believe Mr. Saltman is shocked that his colleagues are shocked.
He is simply saying what all of them have been saying (behind closed doors) for years... That is, "we have to keep those minorities in check – especially those negroes"
Uh, does anyone actually KNOW where the title of the parody song comes from??? Try the L.A. Times, AND it was written by a black man nearly two years ago. Has anyone bothered protesting the original author of this phrase???
The title actually refers to a pop culture term (most often applied to characters played by Morgan Freeman, et al) in which a "magic negro" allows whites laden with racial guilt to feel better about themselves. If the word "negro" has liberals' panties in such a bunch, I suggest you all simply take a deep breath and repeat after me... "parody" "parody" "parody."
There is nothing "racist" nor "bigoted" about this song. Have you actually LISTENED to it? It spoofs poverty-pimps and race-profiteers like Al Sharpton who feel slighted that they are no longer relevant in the new world of Barack Obama, a "magic negro" who allows whites to no longer feel racial guilt for slavery. Learn, hippies, learn... and stop reacting on emotion.
The comments where people are stating that they do not feel this is funny are completely immaterial. Something does not have to be funny to everyone to be considered humour. All humour is offensive to someone. That is just the nature of humour.
Just because you don’t find it funny, does not mean it is not funny. Whether a black man or women finds this funny or not funny does not establish any definition of humour.
As a citizen, Mr. Saltsman, has the right to poke fun at politicians. No politician is immune from satire or even crude humour. It goes with the job. It would be hypocritical to condemn humour against Mr. Obama while endorsing the same against President Bush.
That being said, I feel that Mr. Saltsman exhibited a severe lack of judgment in sending this material. This lack of judgment should disqualify him from any consideration for a leadership position in the GOP.
As a citizen, Mr. Saltsman has the right to be crudely humourous. As a potential political leader, he gives up that right.
William from Chicago   December 29th, 2008 12:09 pm ET
The cornerstone of the Republicans’ southern strategy which they have been following since Nixon and Atwater was, and remains, racism. Saltsman is simply extending the RNC's tradition of pandering to racists as part of an effort to divide the country.
Ken Blackwell's defense of Saltsman and implicitly the RNC's race-based politics of divisiveness is below pathetic. Blackwell has sold any shred of integrity he once had as he shamelessly grovels for favor from Republicans that surely find him contemptuous. I view both men as morally and intellectually bankrupt; and if Republicans hold any hope of remaining a viable national party then the party should forcefully repudiate this type of craven behavior.
pam   December 29th, 2008 12:08 pm ET
This is just great! Rush, Hannity, O'Riley, Rove, and the rest of the old and out of touch white guys are turning the Republican party into a bigoted group that will soon be totally irrelevant. I keep seeing the crowd at the convention last fall. All the faces looked the same. About 90% of the faces were old, overweight white people.
I hope Saltsman is the new head of the RNC. I also hope the RNC chooses Huckabee and Palin to lead the Republican party. That will insure Obama 8 years to try and put our great country back together.
I love the comment directed at Carol "you are not fit to shine Limbaugh's shoes". I can only hope that such things are said about me!
To the person who said the Obama's request to go to Washington earlier was to get away from the Chicago politics should remember that school will be starting and their girls could have begun the term on time if they were in Washington. That person also criticized them for going to Hawaii for Christmas. He was born there, he has family there, they have had Christmas there before and they also attended his Grandmother's private family memorial service during the visit. Give the guy a break. In twenty days he is inheriting the worst mess the United States has ever been in thanks to the Republican party's polices over the last eight years. No one has forgotten that and those on the right who now have all the answers should tell everyone why they didn't fix everything when they were in power. They caused the mess and are doing everything they can to try to hinder him from making things better. Some patriotism!
You have rightfully identified yourself as the "village" idiot.
First of all, the Obamas requested to move into The Blair House earlier than normal protocal because of the start of the new school year! They have 10 and 7 year old children they want to get settled into their new school as seamless as possible.
Secondly, the family Christmas vacation was planned earlier in the year and unfortunately, the funeral service for his recently deceased grandmother was scheduled into the vacation as well.
"Southern Democrats continued to keep them in virtual slavery for the next hundred years and that it took Lyndon Johnson to push legislation to finally do what many Republicans had been trying to do in a Democratically controlled congress for years…equal rights. Southern Democrats finally realized that there was a huge voting block down South and finally changed their ways and now somehow they have managed to point the Racism finger at Republicans and people actually believe this BS? Give me a break."
No, the Dixiecrats bailed on the Democrats and turned into Republicans, which is why Republicans have won the South since 1980. Reagan tapped into the Christian Conservatives in the South, who also wound up being outright racists 9 times out of 10 (frist, strom thurmond, etc), and this bought the Republicans a huge voting block in the deep South when the northern and west coast liberal Democrats pushed or reformed the idiot racists out of the party. The Democrats of 1950 were not the Democrats of 1980. Study more American political history, and realize that the political party label a person uses can change more readily then the person.
It's also worth noting that it was Democrat President Harry Truman that desegregated the Armed Forces, leading the way for the civilian world.
After Sarah Palin and the throngs of Republicans flocking to support her (no pun intended for the Thanksgiving photo shoot), I am thinking perhaps this is the identity of the Republican Party. Racist politicians, fear mongering, claiming slurs and mockery of race as funny: all in the last 3 months of 2008. Perhaps this is the core of the GOP. This is their coveted "base". The fact there is such comfort and ease with these GOP members is telltale of the truth. Shameful.
Have any of you actually listened to this song?
It's making fun of Al Sharpton and all the self appointed leaders of the African American community, who are now out of a job now that Obama is President.
If you get off your high horses and actually listen to it in that context, it's really quite funny.
Take a break, Liberals   December 29th, 2008 11:54 am ET
Some of you (& you should know who you are) obnoxious and hypocritical liberals need to re-focus your energy and quit giving the Democratic Party a bad name. Can you really be that ignorant and mentally incompetent to think that Saltsman is a true representative of the Republican Party? With that logic, Rev. Jackson (who wanted to castrate your Messiah Obama) must be a dead-on reflection of Democrats. How about the great Gov. Blago. from Illinois? Not to mention, Mrs. Obama hasn't been proud of the U.S.A. until people started voting for her husband. Give us all a break. I know CNN.com is a comfort zone for your liberal hatred, but try to use some form of common sense before you start confirming your ignorance on this "Ticker"!
Mitch Florida   December 29th, 2008 11:54 am ET
To LIP,
Stop using the tired old excuse of Lincoln was a Repiblican and the like. The present day Republican party is not the Republican Party of old and likewise for the Democratic Party. I am sick and tired Republicans towing the party lines and not calling out their own party members when they are in the wrong. That is not to say that Democrats don't do the same thing, but Democrats seem to hold their party members accountable whenever a mistake more times than not. So please recognize the Republican party as it is today it is right now being portrayed by party members as a white people party and others are welcome only if they are invited and to meet the quota to say that they are a diverse party. Now look at your party and please recognize that it is a long way from the party of Lincoln and the like and stop trying to make excuses for party members when they make a mistake. Think about the country unity first instead of party loyalty, we are all Americans.
The RNC needs to drop this guy like a bad habit. To all those that are criticizing the Republican party, remember Murtha, ect. representing the Democrats.
There is always some idiot in the bunch, and I'm sure CNN will run this in the ground... RACE AND POLITICS....
Just another distraction from the obvious meltdown of Chicago politics. If Obama has nothing to do with the Blago investigation, why did he request to move into the Blair House early? Why did he then decide to go on vacation in Hawaii? I know the answer... Get as far away from Chicago as possible!!
Not everyone is retarded in this country CNN. I was a Democrat, but now I'm Independent. Don't think we haven't noticed CNN's even bigger move to the left. Lou Dobb's and Glenn Beck are missing from the lineup... I guess we can all get the REAL news from D.L. Hughley (LOL)
MikeH   December 29th, 2008 11:50 am ET
I guess this means Tom Metzger has a shot at being elected the RNC chairman.
But seriously, the core Republican party has become a racist, theo-facist, venal group that truly hates Jefferson's America, and has engaged in economic sabotage of the nation. This core group should be viewed as a threat to American Democracy, and treated accordingly.
There are true Republicans, outcast but loyal to their beliefs, and they should be called upon to re-constitute the party as it was originally conceived.
Apalled at this story, who does this guy think he is acting like a democrat while claiming to be a republican. He should resign any leadership position he has just like Charlie Rangel resigned from the Ways & Means committee when he got caught cheating on his taxes (didn't really happen folks), or like John Stewart and Keith Olberman did when they attacked Sarah Palin (did not happen). He is probably going to get a visit from Rahm "the Enforcer" Emmanuel, or Joe "Greasy Fingers" Biden.
carlo   December 29th, 2008 11:48 am ET
I have to say that I have lived in the South all of my life and I have NEVER met a Republican who had a clue about anyone outside of their white Christian sphere, and its really sad. I don't think that they represent all Republicans, though, but definitely Southern ones. The worst part of it is that the Republicans who are defending this are the black ones and the minority ones like the "totally in denial and boy oh boy why did I have to be black" Amy Holmes and Tara Wall.
A whole new Political party will have to be formed
This guy Saltsman is clearly an idiot and likely a racist. But I'm afraid that those of you attributing these actions to the RNC or the Republican Party either cannot read, or are just as ignorant as Saltsman. Mari   December 29th, 2008 11:35 am ET
Saltsman is an obvious bigot, just like the rest of the Republicans, except that they are not so blatant about it!
Hate, lies, fear and division are the status quo of the Republicans those are their values ......... period. They tell us whom they are over and over. That's why the lost the election and will lose again and again, until the haters are out of the party. If ever.
The McCain campaign, Faux News, Limbaugh, Hannity, OReilly, etc., and Palin are ALL haters. As long as the RNC is defined by this group they will be REJECTED by America!
Tammy - KCMO   December 29th, 2008 11:35 am ET
Once again risking personal attack by Proud American and the thugocracy he represents, I am appalled by the parody. It is almost as bad as the things the democrats did to Sarah Palin (not quite though). This branch of the RNC is acting like John Stewart, Al Franken. These OLD Conservative Democrats from the South thought they had found a home in the GOP in 1964.............WRONG !!! I think it's because deep down in their soul they actually hope that he IS the Messiah, because they know that our country has fallen apart and someone needs to fix it. It certainly won't be a Republican, they are too busy fighting each other right now.
Or is it because no one in your party deserves the title of Messiah? Seems like there is some truth in your words, since you keep repeating them.
Leena   December 29th, 2008 11:30 am ET
It's not satire or a joke if you have to explain it. Bottomline you and your party have just re-confirmed why I voted Democrat this year.
And to say....."I think most people recognize political satire when they see it," Saltsman told CNN. "I think RNC members understand that.".... just displays your level of non-intelligent critical thinking skills.
It's not about the RNC members 'getting it'. It's about how the world and swing-voters views your party and policiies. I'm sure KKK members 'get' why they hide behind sheets too. Get the point?
You made yourself and by extension your Grand Ole' Party look ignorant, out of touch and just plain stupid. To not simply admit what a big disservice you accomplished with one dumb move makes you look even worse.
Lisa V   December 29th, 2008 11:30 am ET
I wonder? Would Republicans think it is funny if a tape came out with "Blackwell, the Magic Oreo" on it? Horrific of me to even bring it up, I know. But, maybe this will start putting things into perspective for those Republicans who think the Saltsman CD or Waffle Box was funny or that Democrats just need to lighten up.
patNY   December 29th, 2008 11:29 am ET
Racists like Saltzman have always hid behind the old defense of political satire when they tried to defend other so called "humor" pieces that invoked images of African Americans as native savages and various forms of inferior primates back in the late 1800s and early to mid 1900s. Please, we can see through it all now. Its not satire, but racism, plain and simple, and the fact these southern white rednecks don't get it, shows we should've let the south cecede and form its own country that would've failed under its own stupidity!
MLH   December 29th, 2008 11:29 am ET
It is good to see that some Republicans get the picture. I took the time to find and listen to this song to see if the satire argument held any water. It doesn't. The song is appalling, and while there may be people out there, like Mr. Saltsman, who find it funny, it would be a very sad day for this country if those people were then to go on to a position of authority.
Get a clue, Mr. Saltsman, as a white person I didn't vote for President-Elect Obama because I thought it was time for a President who was mixed race. I voted for him because he was the best person for the job. If the GOP really wants another shot at the White House, perhaps their leaders ought to work on refuting that argument instead of obsessing on the pigment of Mr. Obama's skin.
ran   December 29th, 2008 11:29 am ET
Yes we do know political satire when we see/hear it and this Mr. Saltsman is not. Read Gulliver's Travel. That is true political satire.
Rob in NJ   December 29th, 2008 11:28 am ET
This is much ado about nothing. Who cares, these people are not in power. What we need to focus our energy on is keeping Obama from hosing our country. He is very shady and who knows what he is going to do.
In summary, Obama is the one we need to be worried about because he will soon be President and will have all the power. He is very shady and unless he is watched carefully all sorts of trickery and bad times are ahead.
I'll take Obama over Bush anyday   December 29th, 2008 11:28 am ET
What the f@#k! What kind of sick joke is this.The republican party will go down in flames if it continues this behavior.You would think after the defeat of McCain/Palin or Sean Hannity race baiting they would adopt a new approach.
proud army and navy mom   December 29th, 2008 11:27 am ET
Wow Ken Blackwell you really want to be elected for the RNC chair. It's funny he finds nothing wrong with it. Maybe because they are talking about Obama in this song. I wonder how he would feel if they was singing the song about his mama.
Daniel   December 29th, 2008 11:26 am ET
It's just so disappointing that the Republican party continues to exemplify ignorance and bigotry. In 2008, they lost my vote. Siding with extreme views from radical evangelical Christians and white supremist views has made the Republican party irrelevant for most moderate Americans. Where is the dignity of the Republican party gone?
Noah   December 29th, 2008 11:26 am ET
Laverne- You are either delusional or intellectually bankrupt. This does not represent the heart of the Republican party despite what you try to convince yourself. This song was condemned immediately after it was heard. You and your Liberal allies were the ones who claimed that Jeremiah Wright did not represent the views of Obama so why should you now claim that this guy represents what the majority of conservatives believe? You represent the hypocrisy of the Left, that is a fact.
It is so ridiculious that the people behind this cd actually believe that the reason Obama was elected was because of white guilt. If that is true, then why didn't Carol Moseley Brown win in '04? If white america is so riddled with guilt when it gets into the voting booth, then why didn't Jesse Jackson win in years past? Let's put things in perspective. If one person denigrates a race of people, that does not make the entire Republican party guilty of racism. Let's not forget that Lincoln was a Republican and the Republicans freed the slaves and the Southern Democrats continued to keep them in virtual slavery for the next hundred years and that it took Lyndon Johnson to push legislation to finally do what many Republicans had been trying to do in a Democratically controlled congress for years...equal rights. Southern Democrats finally realized that there was a huge voting block down South and finally changed their ways and now somehow they have managed to point the Racism finger at Republicans and people actually believe this BS? Give me a break.
No surprise here...   December 29th, 2008 11:18 am ET
Ahh...the RNC spreading their love of hate.
Typical...this shouldn't surprise anyone!
From Minneapolis   December 29th, 2008 11:18 am ET
I see racism is still very much alive and well in the USA. We will never come together as Americans and a country with crap like this constantly being pushed as free speech.
Ray Fisher   December 29th, 2008 11:17 am ET
The Obama parody is yet another example of the arrogance & superiority of the Republican party which is exactly why many of us refuse to support them any longer. While insisting it is merely humor, the subject, timing and approach are not only questionable but detrimental to the teamwork required to address our current challenges. Our new President has been promoting unity and cooperation to heal our nation while the Republican naysayers have denegrated to racist, sexist, and good-ole boy rhetoric. As I've heard them spew venom against all but the WASPS in their midst I also know they will resort to any means to retain their political and financial kidnapping of our nation. While a WASP myself I find it better to fly wth others than to sting and lose my stinger in a single shot!!!
John Anthony   December 29th, 2008 11:17 am ET
No wonder the GOP is the minority party, with jerks like Saltsman and Rush Limbaugh as members and spokespersons. These types have no respect, consideration, or sensitivity toward anyone, and are truly disgraceful.
Liz   December 29th, 2008 11:16 am ET
I don't think even a box of Altoids would get the taste of foot out of his mouth for this one.
Jeff In Ohio   December 29th, 2008 11:16 am ET
HAHAHAHAHA. What a bunch of clowns.
Apples for sale   December 29th, 2008 11:16 am ET
Sounds like the PC crowd got their panties in a knot over nothing. It's satire people, better get use to it.
Greg Pottstown, Pa.   December 29th, 2008 11:15 am ET
What the hell is wrong with this guy. I am a republican but i don't want to be lumped in with this retard.
(Former) Lifelong Republican for Obama, Columbia, TN   December 29th, 2008 11:15 am ET
Ken Blackwell should be ashamed of himself. As an African-American myself, I think Mr. Blackwell should be well aware of the underlying racism in this song. It is not hypersensitivity...the racism in this song is real.
Monty Delaware GOP!!!!   December 29th, 2008 11:14 am ET
Being African American, I am more shocked that Ken Blackwell can state that the hypersensitivity that exist in this country is because Barack Obama was just elected President of the US. I would say the hypersensitivity is the cause of centuries of mistreatment, not the election of a black man for potus. Ken Blackwell should know the difference.
The CD was at best in poor taste, which shows a lack of judgement for a person running for such an important post. At worse it shows something far more sinister. Either way, he should remove himself from the race because if Saltsman wins, the party can kiss away any shot of becoming inclusive in any way. I for one would change my affiliation to independent the next day.
Appalled Hoosier   December 29th, 2008 11:13 am ET
Do you STILL think that those 'left wingers' are simply playing the race card over this "imagined racism" that exists within the Republican Party?
John   December 29th, 2008 11:13 am ET
as a white person with family members who are from african american roots I am appalled this person should be striped off all power and sent to reeducation with the rest of the GOP.
Adam in VA   December 29th, 2008 11:13 am ET
Gross. This is the 21st century, grow up Saltsman. This goes to show just how out of touch the GOP really is.
dallas female   December 29th, 2008 11:13 am ET
typical southern attitude.
thank goodness that you racists republicans are becoming the minority.
just look at the delegate maps. the blue is closing in on the red and the red needs to get on out the way.
Proud to be American   December 29th, 2008 11:13 am ET
See they are trying to pull the one over us .... the song is really represents the RNC and their feelings.... they do not want to be united.... and that is sad. It is sadder that someone that want to lead the RNC thinks the song is okay..... the RNC is toast.
(Former) Lifelong Republican for Obama, Columbia, TN   December 29th, 2008 11:13 am ET
They should all slam this ridiculous, unfunny, and downright racist song! I will never subscribe to Republican philosophies again.
BB   December 29th, 2008 11:12 am ET
Most of my family members are republicans, and this election cycle has brought out traits in them that were "hidden" for years and years. It is causing problems within their entire neighborhood. It's a sad day for the USA when it comes down to the sneakiest group of people I've ever witnessed.
I sure hope it changes with the next generation. The old folks are lost to prejudice.
OZI, New York   December 29th, 2008 11:12 am ET
Believe it or not, He is our next president. So get over it and accept him as our President. Bunch of losers!!!!!!!!!
NBA Writer in San Antonio   December 29th, 2008 11:11 am ET
This is one of the the reasons why the Republicans lost this election.
People are tired of this type of satire. It's not funny.
David Goldman   December 29th, 2008 11:10 am ET
THE RNC SHOULD JUST GO AHEAD & RUN
DAVID DUKE FOR THEIR NEXT PRESIDENTIAL RUN.OR
TRY TO FIND ONE OF THOSE OLD NAZIS THAT GOT AWAY &
HAVE HIM AS THEIR FUTURE LEADER OF THEIR FUTURE "PARTY".
Dina-Bronx   December 29th, 2008 11:10 am ET
and they wonder why they lost the election? The "good old party" still has a long way to go before they finally "get it". Face it fellas: you have a new president; he is a democrat; and he is the son of a black man and a white woman. Wake up and get used to the future of America!
NEL E BELL   December 29th, 2008 11:10 am ET
NOT BRAGGING BUT I DID NOT VOTE FOR OBAMA THIS TIME, HOWEVER, MAYBE NEXT. AS TO THIS ISSUE, I DON'T GET THE HUMOR IN THIS, PERHAPS WE ALL SHOULD PORTRAY SOUTHERNERS AS ILLITERATES IN WHITE SHEETS AND FLAMING CROSSES WITH BROKEN DOWN RUST BUCKETS ON THE FROUNT LAWN, OR A BUNCH OF INBREED MUTANTS, THATS SOUNDS LIKE HUMOR DOESN'T IT.
PERHAPS THE REPUBLICANS CAN REDEEM THEMSELVES FROM 8YRS OF BUSHWACKER LEADERSHIP WITH JUST CIVIL BEHAVIOR TOWARDS THEIR FELLOW AMERICANS., MAYBE IF THEY DON'T LET OBAMA AND HIS LIBERAL BACKERS BORROW AND TAX US INTO THE TOTAL POOR HOUSE I COULD ENTERTAIN A REPUBLICAN POLITICIAN BUT BASED UPON THIS CRAP STORM THEY THINK AS HUMOR, NOT LIKELY FOR MANY MANY YEARS.
Dina-Bronx   December 29th, 2008 11:09 am ET
This is America, Racism is alive and will always be here. This is not a black or white thing. Treat a person like you want to be treated ( that was a good one) people are still mad because President Obama won. Saltsman should be on the FBI CIA watch list.
ran   December 29th, 2008 11:06 am ET
This party is over in it's current form and unless the party chances it will be over for good. There is no want, save some few right wingers ,for this kind of behavior in this or any party. We the people need to establish once and for all that we are the United States and stop hyphenating our selves (IE African-American, Irish-American etc.).
This is not to say we do not acknowledge our past or heritage but until we see our selves as Americans we will always be a divided country. I do not recall any other nation who hyphenates themselves (African-Spanish, Irish-Spanish etc.). We can start the new year by clamming to be an American because it will take us all to get our country moving in the right direction for us all.
Island girl   December 29th, 2008 11:06 am ET
Unrelated to the topic but the comment section was closed for the piece under this heading:
Rice: "People will thank Bush for what he's done".
Will someone please give this lady a breathalizer test ASAP!!!
Gerard Lavallee   December 29th, 2008 11:05 am ET
Sure it's just a joke, just pure rascism.
Ryan   December 29th, 2008 11:04 am ET
Do not bother reading this article, Obama has won the election, so sing all you want .
For people who think they can blackmail Obama , don't bother .
Blago tried and failed horrendously.
There is Hillary,Rahm and Biden onboard, these people wil eat you for breakfast if you try to harm again.
The world has suffered enough .
jquen   December 29th, 2008 11:04 am ET
Shocked? No
Appaled? Yes
it cant be shocking that the rebublicans chose to create such verbal diahrea, but i am sickend by it. Unhappily, not all republicans are raciest bigots, too bad the only raciest bigots i know are all republican...
Kevin B   December 29th, 2008 11:03 am ET
It is truly unfortunate that everything has to viewed through the prism of race for the GOP leadership. As long as they can keep this type of silly dialog going, the American public will continue to be mislead and misserved in a time of economic distress for americans of all races.
It is the old "divide and conquer" technique that has worked so well for so many years. Don't fall for it, they are counting on ignorance to prevail over wisdom.
A NEW, NEW YORKER   December 29th, 2008 11:03 am ET
POOR SALTMAN, HE MISSED THE OPPORTUNITY TO JOIN
THE NAZI PARTY & NOW HE HAS TO SETTLE FOR THE KKK.
Disgusted in Denver   December 29th, 2008 11:03 am ET
What, he isn't an angry Southerner stoking the flames of racism because his candidate lost to a minority? He may think the song is a joke, but I think the joke is on him and the RNC.
kavita   December 29th, 2008 11:03 am ET
This CD goes to show why I cannot vote Republican. Though I fit most of the criteria for wanting to vote Republican; however, I do not because they do not accept people of other faiths and nationalities with open arms. It still seems like the good old boys club. Once they realize that being "conservative" is not only for Christians then they will see more voters like myself aligning with them. I am conservative in most aspects but cannot ethically vote for a racist party. Therefore, I still vote Democrat.
Fred the moderate   December 29th, 2008 11:02 am ET
I have believed this to be the platform of the republican party for a great deal of time, but this type of proof wasn't avalible until now. The republicans exhibited this behaveur from Berry Goldwater to bush's admin. Any party that the extreme hate groups adhere to, isn't a party of the future. America is moving on now, leaving the negative hatred of Lee Atwater, Sara Palin and Karl Rove behind. We want all of our people to have access, with the right to goveren their nation. I am shocked that any recording like this could be conceived let alone distributed by anyone in government. We fail because we don't come together. This type of ignorance makes sure we don't!
BUSH BEGONE AND 75% OF AMERICANS FINALLY AGREE!   December 29th, 2008 11:02 am ET
Republicans "shocked and appalled" at racial bigotry? Now, that is news! However, it may have been more effective to be offended when what's her name was leading the Klan, uh, stump speech rallies.
Of course, this does have a paper trail, so I guess they HAD to feign distaste for the bigotry.
Not suprising Saltsman is from Tennessee...
Right wing nut job   December 29th, 2008 11:02 am ET
See what too much Rush gets you!!!!!!
Apples for sale   December 29th, 2008 11:01 am ET
Wow the republicans are now imploding.How was Mike Connell?
Moe, NY   December 29th, 2008 10:59 am ET
The Republican Party, as it stands today, is disgusting to put it mildly. There is no longer room in America for these racist, hate mongering, ignorant politicans. One would have thought that they learned a lesson from the past election, but apparently not!
Danny G. Boca Raton, FL   December 29th, 2008 10:58 am ET
Mr. Saltsman appears amuzed by such satire; however I believe that such actions only bring deeper divisions amongs americans of all ideologies and beliefs. this is a person that is running for a position on a national political party, a party that should be concentrating on their ideals and how to best inlcude more American's in those ideals. I think that his judgement was very poor and in bad taste. his image will be tarnished and one day he will look back at this as a big mistake. Rush Limbaugh does it to get publicity good or bad, when you are the Chair of a Major party; you should be looking at building your coalition not a ruining your poilitcal career. The GOP is in serious trouble.
banned from cnn for making too much sense   December 29th, 2008 10:57 am ET
Hmmmm this post has been up here for about 10 minutes.... th4e righties are pretty quiet so far.... what's wrong... haven't thought up the perfect defense of the indefensible yet?
i'll give it 5 more minutes.... and the spinning will begin.
Chris in MI   December 29th, 2008 10:56 am ET
This guy Saltsman is a moron. He's not worthy of ANY chairmanship anywhere, and it looks like he's a pariah with the RNC now, as he should be. If the RNC has any hope of reviving their lousy image, they need to distance themselved from this idiot. Just when America looks like it's coming together with the first black President, you've got a jerk like this coming out of the woodwork. Grow up and act like a mature adult, Saltsman. You're a disgrace who's right up there with Blagojevich.
Sue T   December 29th, 2008 10:56 am ET
as long as Saltsmans and those who think and believe like Saltman, Limbaugh, and the rest of the far far right then the Republican party is done, over, .........never to hold any more seats in the House or Senate, never will you have your foot back in the White House.....it is over for all of you unless you lose the losers in your party that are holding you back.........CHANGE that's what it is all about.......and unless you are willing to make some BIG CHANGES in your party, you can forget it..........
therealist   December 29th, 2008 10:56 am ET
At least republicans dont' quit the church in two faced fashion to reject one preachers race baiting style.
carol   December 29th, 2008 10:55 am ET
It still shows the ignorance of the Republican party, Limbaugh is just a useless waste of space anyway and if he had a brain he would be dangerous.
I don't think it's appropriate at all, because you can be sure if it were a song written about McCain if he were President and it was negative, all hell would break loose from the Republican side.
My thought here is really small minds can't hold too much information at one time...so I guess a 2/3min song is the best we can hope for!!!
ml - California   December 29th, 2008 10:55 am ET
Republicans – you are digging yourself deeper with this trash!!
Nothing better to do with your time???
How about all of the crticial issues in this country and the terrible wars in the Arab world?
How about respecting Obama, since he is days away from becomming our next President?
GET A GRIP!!
That's not funny   December 29th, 2008 10:55 am ET
At least he didn't say he was head Negro in charge.
Rachel   December 29th, 2008 10:55 am ET
I thought the elite was past such enuendos! Poor taste and poor judgement and just plain stupidity is still hanging around the RNA. When will they ever learn. They deserve to be the losers!
I want to be under the sea   December 29th, 2008 10:53 am ET
Why are there so many racists in the GOP?
J.C.   December 29th, 2008 10:52 am ET
Nobody hates USA so much that they would stop registering themselves on our Visa Lottery website for a slim chance of becoming one of us. I think most people are just jealous of us blindly. We have got problems, but we are still the envy of the world. They hate the USA, possibly because we don't let them all come.
Amy from Michgan   December 29th, 2008 10:52 am ET
I had never heard of Chip Saltsman before this story. I googled his picture and was not surprised to see that he is a chubby, pasty man.
Please, RNC, if you want to survive, do not elect Saltsman to head up your party. His Christmas gift represents a lot of what is wrong with your party, and I beg of you to choose a leader who will take the party into the future with a new vision.
