GOP to Dems: Slow down on stimulus bill

Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell wants Congress to holds hearings on the stimulus package.
Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell wants Congress to holds hearings on the stimulus package.

WASHINGTON (CNN) - Top congressional Republicans cautioned Democrats not to rush through a massive stimulus package that lawmakers hope to send to President-elect Barack Obama shortly after he takes office next month.

A House Democratic leadership aide told CNN on Tuesday that Congress will likely take up a stimulus bill the second week of January.

Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell, R-Kentucky, said the Congress must prove to taxpayers that the stimulus bill, which some economists suggest could amount to $1 trillion, "is not wasting their money."

"We should have a simple test: will the yet-unwritten, reportedly trillion-dollar spending bill really create jobs and grow the economy - or will it simply create more government spending, more bureaucrats and deeper deficits?" McConnell said in a statement Monday.

McConnell's $1 trillion figure for the stimulus bill may be an overestimate, however.

The very people who are on here screaming welfare and socialism are the very people who NEED this stimulus package. Look, I am a Republican who believes in small government. The purpose of the government is to help the people because WE own it. In order to stimulate the economy, the American people need capital. We need to invest in ourselves. That's why the party lost because people do not understand what small government means. Don't give me that argument about handouts because corporate sure hasn't apologized for any of their handouts. Why should the average hard working American apologize because their government is working for them.

You'll get your say in this [D]-controlled gov't, even though your minority is no bigger than the boyle festering on your lazy rear-ends. Didn't Obama say we'd talk to our adversaries with no pre-conditions?........that even includes you intellectual low-life [R]epublicans!

The country has waited long enough for those of your in office to actually do something positive for this country! Yes, do the right thing but get the lead out as my father used to say!

I notice that the big mouth MINORITY LEADER kept his big mouth shut when paulson and Bush gave away 700 billion to their BANKING AND WALL ST> BUDDIES, Thatwas okay but to give some to the working and poor folks is wrong. No wonder they have blown away the White House the senate and the house. That shows the type of knowledge and leadership that Mcconnel is familiar with.

Hey Angie, stop laughing long enough to look up some stuff...like which branch of the federal government has responsibility for managing federal funds. The Executive Branch proposes a budget, but it's the Legislative Branch that controls how it gets executed. Clinton wasn't responsible for the surplus, Bush isn't responsible for the deficit.

I think nobody is entitled to waste tax-payers' money. Democrats are very good at that and then we have radical leftists like PROUD AMERICAN talking nonsense and then there is TEXAS TEACHER who may lose her job if Barack goes ahead with home-schooling. Barack Obama drama has just begun and he wants to use our money for it. Our children and grandchildren will suffer more and more.

This is what happens when there's no true leadership. For eight years, we always REACT to problems. Katrina sums up just about anything we've done for the least eight years. Heads in the clouds...

Your GOP leaders have already proven their mettle and destroyed the economy and the country. Now please shut up and go along with the program.

I think when the Republicans wanted to bail out their buddy's, it was give us the money right now, no questions ask. They don't even know who got the money, or how much. Riduculous! Now that more serious head want to prevail, they want to put a stop to it. Just more typical Republican game playing. I can't wait to see them and their notorious leader GONE!

The Republicans have said nothing but Yes Yes Yes to all of Bush's unchecked deficit spending and gone along with his sheer lunacy and lies for the past 8 years...we now have the biggest deficit ever with the worst economic problems in almost a century...now all of a sudden the Repubs want to stand up start cautioning and warning Barack Obama??? The Retardicans need to pull their heads out of their butts, wake up and smell the coffee. The Repubs have nearly destroyed the country and (just like with FDR after the Great Depression) only the Democrats can offer any practical solutions!

Uh, Richard, are your parents alive? Aunts, Uncles, sisters, brothers... Those programs that you feel are failures have saved millions of hard working people over the years. I sure hope you never reach a point in your life that you might ever have to use Medicare. If so, I hope you gladly turn it and any other benefits down since you are so perfect and can take care of yourself and your family.
