The Obamas are moving early in part so daughters Malia and Sasha, above, can start school on time.

(CNN) — The Obama family is planning to move to Washington this weekend, say two transition officials. “They will stay at a Washington hotel through the 15th and then they will move into the Blair House,” said the first official.

President-elect Barack Obama and wife Michelle are coming to DC early in part to be there for the beginning of school for daughters Malia and Sasha, but will not specify which day that will be.

The officials also note that the President-elect will be in Washington to “continue work on an economic recovery plan.” Democratic officials have previously said they’re expecting the Obama team to get the economic recovery plan to the Hill the first week of January.

Excellent points my friend!
I think these first four years will definitely put more salt in his hair.
I'm reminded of the Shel Silverstein cartoon of a man standing in front of an enormous steering wheel attached to the world when I think about the challenges this President must face.

Good luck, my friend, Mr. President.

There are still quite a few Obama haters out there. You all might as well stop your whining and complaining. This man has been elected as our next President and there is absolutely nothing you can do about it. Your voting against him, didn't stop him and neither will your gripes and complaints.

We are very fortunate that this time around, we have someone with a "brain that actually functions". He has picked an outstanding staff and cabinet officials. He and Vice-President Elect Biden have offered this country something we have not had for a very long time and that is "real hope".

My suggestion to all you haters is that you go and have a colon cleansing, because you are full of Toxins!!!

Best wishes to the family as they go forward, and I agree with proud american…move the bushes out and let the Obamas move in, he has a lot to clean up and he certainly should not be having to move 3 times in three weeks in the midst of everything else that he has to do. I am so proud of the time that I spent on the phones and walking through town handing out fliers–it did and WILL make a difference to our future.

I don't know about you other Obama supporters, but do you get the sense the Republicans are running on empty. I mean, for one, they pop on to every blog to make stupid comments about Obama, even when it involves his children.

So far, every comment that they have made on every blog makes no sense or they use terms that were used 40 years ago. Welfare check, entitlement, blah, blah. You are running on empty Repubs and your thoughts are comments are USELESS. Get over it, it is a new day and it is time for fresh intelligent thinkers to run this country. YOU LOST and if you keep it up YOU WILL LOOSE AGAIN IN 2012.

To No Hillary = No Obama: Get Over It Already.
No Obama = No Hillary – or haven't you read the news lately?

Hillary is there to do the job of Sec. of State – the President Elect already looks like the work horse and he isn't even in office yet. It's time to come on board with the Democrat who won the nomination and the election. It's a sorry state of affairs if you think Barack Obama is not educated – please explain how you came to that conclusion.

roger in ga   December 30th, 2008 11:08 pm ET

GOD speed to you Mr President Elect and to your family too. I am saddened that President went on vacation in September and let your plate pile high with problems. Take your time and do the best you can. I know the task before you are not easy so i will give you the time you need to resolve them. Let me know if you will need another 4 years and we will arrange that for you.

jack   December 30th, 2008 11:07 pm ET

He's the president elect. He has a secret service retinue that checks out ever location he goes to, and does the same for every member of his family. He can't book a room in a hotel like everyone else.

Get real. This was beyond petty.

dmjakers   December 30th, 2008 11:05 pm ET

OBAMA did say that a President must be able to do more than one thing at a time (remember back when McCain tried to back out of the debate?).
But this is ridiculous! He's running the transition, hiring a cabinet, White House staffers and an entire government, MOVING, and all this while on vacation!
For most mere mortals, moving would be more than enough to totally stress someone out, but Superman is planning to move THREE times in THREE weeks. To DC, then to Blair House, then to the White House.
Throw in Blagojevich, Cuba, Putin-Medvedev, Bin Laden, Iran, Gaza-Israel, and a power failure in Hawaii, and I have to wonder how he keeps his hair from falling out.

The Obama's should get Blair House when all President elects gets it.-and I understand that will be the 15th of January. I wonder what all of you "worshipers" of Obama are going to say when he can't "part the waters" that you seem to think that he can. He CANNOT be all things, to everyone, even though that is what he promised during his campaign.

Melissa   December 30th, 2008 10:48 pm ET

And hopefully now his little girls will be allowed to go to school and live their lives in privacy. Mr. Obama and his wife may be public figures, but their children should be off-limits and should be allowed to have a childhood.

Welcome Mr. President.

Just a few...   December 30th, 2008 10:45 pm ET

more days before Mr Obama and his administration begin the real work. They have already been working hard, which is amazing to me ~ never saw such a thing from our leaders. I pray for the Obama family (lot of wacky, angry people out there) and the new administration, as well as all leaders (yes, even Republicans) of our country. I hope that ALL of them will find a way to lead this country out of the current "messes" we are in and do it with trust and good will. Okay, so I can hope…it is a new year…I am ready to start over and give everyone a fresh start, even the Obama haters who hang out on the "Ticker." :)

THANK YOU Mr Obama for taking on these huge challenges.

I wish the Obama Family and everyone else a wonderful and prosperous New Year.

mama   December 30th, 2008 10:45 pm ET

Bradley Jenkins, is that your way of telling us that you're moving to DC..?

mike   December 30th, 2008 10:41 pm ET

This is a little absurd honestly. The location the Obamas were asking to stay in is inside the secret service envelope in the district which makes it among the very few places they really can stay.

Certainly the Bush Administration can afford to host its last few parties somewhere that is mildly less convenient

elvera   December 30th, 2008 10:40 pm ET

To all of you who continue to spew hate and lies against our President-elect Barack Obama, shut up and sit quietly in your caves, jail cells, mental institutions, etc. You belong to the McCain/Palin gang, stay there and do not crawl out! Illinois teacher   December 30th, 2008 10:31 pm ET

Actually, it was ungracious of the Obama's to expect to move into Blair House early, no matter what the reason. The date has always been the 15th. Some of you think Obama and his family are so special that everyone else should just accommodate THEM.

The Bush's have shown incredible hospitality during the transition.
One last thing: what will you Obamabots do when he is criticized and mocked for decisions like YOU trashed Bush? Turn around is fair play…or is it?

Most people don't like him. But he is the President of the United States of America. I repeat, he is the President of the United States of America. That title deserves and commands respect. Now, I did not vote for Barack Obama, but I will respect him as the President of the United States. I'd just like to see a little reciprocation.

TO A WOMAN IN CALIFORNIA;

You have to either be bald or have stick-straight hair.

For the curious on Black hair or hair of Bi-racial people: It can range from the very dry, course kinky, to wavy and oily, straight oily or straight dry.

In the summer or warmer climates, their particular course hair frizzes, ok? They are toooo young for chemical relaxers. Their mom does not have to go around frying their hair with hot combs and flat irons to make them more integrated into what society thinks is beautiful.

Let the girls play in the sun, water and if their hair frizzes or naps up, so be it. ITS CALLED VACATION until their dad becomes busy with his other children the Dems and Repubs.

CharleneW   December 30th, 2008 10:11 pm ET

My heart smiles when I look at this picture and the knowledge that this fine man is going to be leading our country.

I hear some sour grapes about Hillary. If Hillary is so great, how was President elect Obama able to out maneuver her and run a near perfect campaign? And he did this without all the IOU's and big money that Hillary & Bill had to call on. President elect does not need Hillary — in fact, it is the one appointment so far that I do have concerns about, but I trust it was a very considered and calculated move – the kind of move he exemplified in his campaign.

Blair house is small stuff for small minds. I can understand why George would feel uncomfortable having Obama next door during the close out of George's administration, though it would have been extremely gracious of him to extend the courtesy. Obama won't dwell on it – not his nature. So we shouldn't either.

Blessings to the Obamas and to the US. Hoping for much brighter days ahead.

Congrats to Barack and family for (almost) moving in! Great news!

But, when Don Imus made his disgusting racist comments, Obama wrote a beautiful letter to NBC telling them that if he had someone working for him who said anything that racist or sexist as Imus uttered his hate toward the AA Rutgers girls, Obama would fire him immediately! Which was great. But tell us why, Mr. Obama, you still have in your employ, and have promoted, rather than kick him in the posterio, that sexist, misgynist Pun Director of Speechwriters, the 27-year-old inebriated sexist Mr. Jon Favreau!? Why are you not firing him? Instead, you promoted him to Director! What kind of message are you giving, Prez-elect, to your little girls who will grow up. Incredible that common folk outrank a President-elect when it comes to Blair House. There should be a law against that. Let the Bush friends/relatives stay in hotels and put the Obama Family in Blair House as they should be. I hate to think how they will be treated on the day of the swearing–in. Although with that being mostly open to public view, I think it may be handled more gracefully.

Dont' get too excited. Republicans are sharpening their knives and waiting at the airport and hotel ready to stab every policy (help) he wants to give them.

No policy Obama raises will be enough or right enough for the right, unless Rove/Rush/Hannity blesses it. Either the man is too cool or not forceful enough in his responses. Let the man be who he is. 2. You should watch remarks about politicians children.
3. I'd watch out for remarks about drugs and drinking(I'd hate to bring up someone's last 2 years of high school)
4. You guys are like the plates and coins with Obamas face on them-commemorating his presidency-but wait, he's only been playing president in the media, he hasn't been one for real yet.
5. I'm sure you want everyone to be nice to Obama and his family and you'll see how hateful you've been towards the Bush family.

BUSH BEGONE AND NOW 75% OF AMERICA FINALLY AGREES!   December 30th, 2008 9:06 pm ET

Prayerfully, the shrub will stay in Crawford for a couple of weeks snoozing and Obama can get some work done.

Someone needs to work on the economy.

faceone   December 30th, 2008 9:04 pm ET

May God's almighty blessings to President Barack Obama & America!

MM   December 30th, 2008 9:02 pm ET

happy new year to the Obamas and to everyone else. Now can't we all make a new year's resolution to speak positively and work together instead of the bickering?

MK   December 30th, 2008 8:59 pm ET

Happy New Year to us! Oh happy day! Here's to 1/20/2009!

nat from sc   December 30th, 2008 8:58 pm ET

Bradley Jenkins – You are a moronic bigot. This Country can do without people like you.

jayeandvic@aol.com   December 30th, 2008 8:56 pm ET

Godspeed to the Obama family!

JEAN   December 30th, 2008 8:53 pm ET

Good for him. Atleast he will start to learn about the streets and corner stores while he takes his kids to school……..

God bless this family. Real role model for this country!

virginia for obama   December 30th, 2008 8:51 pm ET

No Hillary = No Obama – you need a couch or a support group.

He won. . . get over it. "Poor thang," don't wast all the time you have left grieving over Hillary or hating Obama, you don't really know them and they surely don't know you. So please get on with your life. And if you have children, grandchildren, a husband or friends…give some of that attention to them. I'm sure they will love you for it.

Nothing ever changes   December 30th, 2008 8:50 pm ET

God bless our new President, keep him and his family in your grace oh Lord. Amen.

Proud American   December 30th, 2008 8:47 pm ET

irakwarno4americans   December 30th, 2008 8:45 pm ET

Bradley Jenkins   December 30th, 2008 8:45 pm ET

Uh oh, there goes the neighborhood!!

Ellen M. Wolfe   December 30th, 2008 8:43 pm ET

I am happy that the Obama`s have found a solution. I don`t know why Blair House isn`t available earlier, but I can`t see that W is using it for parties. It would have been nice if the current tenants had volunteered to move swap Blair house for the hotel the Obamas are going to use,.

Angie   December 30th, 2008 8:43 pm ET

Good. He is thinking of his children. Wonderful President elect Obama. Welcome to Washington. God bless you and your family And Happy New Year.

No Obama = No Hillary   December 30th, 2008 8:40 pm ET

Yes We Can!

rachel   December 30th, 2008 8:39 pm ET

There is nothing wrong with the girl's hairstyle, when they are at an event they are dolled up, no need for curls and elabrate hairstyles when on vacation at water parks.

Griff   December 30th, 2008 8:39 pm ET

Security on Obama??? No Security over OBama for the benefit of the rest of America…. Obama will be in Cold Storage…. Isolation! Good.
America needs to be protected… Guantnamo???? GOOOOOOOD!!!

yellow dog democrat   December 30th, 2008 8:36 pm ET

Dear "No Hillary = No Obama" you are so sad. Hope you have a better new year – because you have sure been "spiteful" since the Nov 2 election results!

Hillary will work for Obama alright – and I am sure will do a good job – and he will decide the policies to set forth re Mid-East – 2 ongoing "wars" – economy woes – wall street woes – main street woes –

I dearly hope he and his family had as good a rest from "business as usual" although, because he is very engaged & concientious- this was a working vacation – as well as one of remembrance for his grandmother. I wish people who are so negative would just give the man a break – and be thankful such a dynamic person was willing to lay his life & privacy on the line and serve as President of the US – no easy task – just ask all the previous Presidents! – He could have just sat back and made oodles of money doing something else and thinking of no-one but himself – a much easier road I'm sure.

I do look forward to seeing Obama in the White House and soon!

DEVILXL   December 30th, 2008 8:36 pm ET

WAY TO GO OBAMA…. TIME TO CLEAN THIS WHOLE MESS THAT BUSH CREATED.. THE AFRICAN PEOPLE ARE 100% BEHIND YOU !! GOOD LUCK.

Mike   December 30th, 2008 8:35 pm ET

Oh NoHillary=No Obama,
Can you please get over your bitterness and open your eyes. Your woman lost to her more capable opponent because of his grit, intellect, savvy, and just plain better political skills. Old workhorse Clinion was a solid and generrous pick for secretary of state, but nothing but a junior senator from NY and husband of a former president without Obama

Kathy   December 30th, 2008 8:32 pm ET

God Bless American
God Bless our Brave Troops
God Bless Obama and his family!!!

tisha   December 30th, 2008 8:32 pm ET

To No Hillary.. all I can do is LMAO over this iditioc comment.

lovable liberal   December 30th, 2008 8:31 pm ET

It's a tough road ahead for Obama and America. Thank goodness we have him.

ObamaForTechnology   December 30th, 2008 8:31 pm ET

We will miss the Obamas in Chicago and in Hyde Park. Was good and fun while they were here. On to bigger and better things! Much success in Washington DC to the Obama family, friends and staff.

Lori   December 30th, 2008 8:30 pm ET

Finally!!! Hurry up and take office President Obama. Finally competent people will in the White House- Obama, Clinton, Richardson, etc. The world has been waiting for this day for 8 years!!!

My kind of President!

Anonymous   December 30th, 2008 8:23 pm ET

thats attractive.

Sherrol in Canada   December 30th, 2008 8:22 pm ET

Not surprising, I was always convinced that the Obamas made their daughters' best interests a priority. Hope they settle into their new school without a hitch.

Pat   December 30th, 2008 8:20 pm ET

Glad he didn't get Blair House BEFORE he was entitled to it.

Mary   December 30th, 2008 8:10 pm ET

George W is so ungracious – which is typical of his terms of office. I don't care if people in his administration want to have going away parties at the Blair House, the Obamas should have first dibs on the house since it's for a good reason – for the girls' school situation. Our president elect deserves better.

John G   December 30th, 2008 8:09 pm ET

STOP THE PRESSES! The guy who is going to be president is moving to Washington!

Breaking News!

Brian   December 30th, 2008 8:04 pm ET

It's about time! :D

larry   December 30th, 2008 8:02 pm ET

At least we now have a president (elect) that is real leader, and not just a lap dog for special interests and the super rich

I see u2   December 30th, 2008 8:01 pm ET

How nice it is to have a young family move into the white house… No more drunken teens(Bush girls) or unwed pregnant teens( Palin girl) and they all are Republican-moral majority right-right?

No Hillary = No Obama   December 30th, 2008 8:01 pm ET

Time to put away the bathing suits, the shaved ice, the golf clubs, the strolls, the morning work outs at the gym, the vaction compound and get to work. Work? Oh wait, that's what he has Hillary Clinton for – Clinton will be Obama's work horse – Hamas & Israel – a chronic Hatfields and McCoy – Clinton, who has the substance and experience will have to tackle what Obama's brain can't fix.

Aurora LeBrun   December 30th, 2008 7:58 pm ET

How can the Bush administration deny the President-elect and his family the early use of Blair House? Original stories said the house was full, but I cannot imagine of any guest that would trump the new first family. I was not an Obama supporter, but I applaud their decision to move earlyto allow a smooth transition for their daughters, and I deplore yet one more mean-spirited and ill-thought action by the Bush administration.

cLk   December 30th, 2008 7:53 pm ET

the sooner the better!!

Cynthia - Arkansas   December 30th, 2008 7:53 pm ET

Obama can't get there fast enough! He and his administration really have their work cut out for them. The mess that Bush has left is really bad! God speed Barack!

Proud American   December 30th, 2008 7:51 pm ET

I believe it's safe to say that this guy is needed in Washington now. When was the President Elect required in Washington a full 3 weeks prior to taken office? Let's all thank God he available and willing.

Proud American   December 30th, 2008 7:49 pm ET

It's about time, someone with a brain shows up in Washington. I've waited my entire life almost 40 years for someone like Obama to lead this nation. God Bless America and the Obama's.

Messiah watch   December 30th, 2008 7:45 pm ET

And no doubt he will ride into town in his own private rail car like Vladimer Lenin.

After that extravagant vacation, if he say anything about raising taxes on anyone, spreading the wealth, or shared sacrifices, I will vomit in the middle of Pennsylvania Avenue.

Darren D. Johnson   December 30th, 2008 7:44 pm ET

Con-g to the Obama Family! God and my family will be with you, 2009-2016!

Juan Grain   December 30th, 2008 7:41 pm ET

Yea, I don't blame you Chicago is on fire!

Show Stopper   December 30th, 2008 7:36 pm ET

Such an great president elect I wonder what comments are going to come about his move to Washington something stupid I'm sure from the Obama haters.I sure wish it was Palin going back to lala land with all her hate inticing and her stupid winking and flirting for those stupid republicans that fell for thak lunitic. She will go down as the worst mistake John McCain made choosing her as a running mate and no matter how much he praises her he knows it too about the new grandma airhead

Cindy   December 30th, 2008 7:34 pm ET

See? The availability of the Blair House is no biggie. Other arangements can always be made as long as circumstances are known ahead of time.

S Callahan   December 30th, 2008 7:31 pm ET

And bring a Rabbi to bless the front and back of your new home.
I will continue to keep you, President elect Obama, and your family in my prayers. Happy Moving!

Jon   December 30th, 2008 7:26 pm ET

Well, there goes the neighborhood.

Anonymous   December 30th, 2008 7:23 pm ET

it's very un-presidential for our new commander-in-chief to be put on a hotel list, while other unimportant people are occupying the Blair House, it should become a law against what Bush is backhandling to President-elect Obama

deeh   December 30th, 2008 7:21 pm ET

Great news.

A Woman In California For Obama   December 30th, 2008 7:17 pm ET

I hope the girls will enjoy their new school. Although I find the girls to be adorable, I hope Michelle spends more time on their hair styles.

In that picture… look at how much Malia looks like her daddy… as everyone used to say when my children were born… you sure can tell who the daddy is…. :) Little Sasha looks so much like her mom… What a lovely family…. it will be a pleasure to watch them grow…

Texas Teacher   December 30th, 2008 7:12 pm ET

Just in the nic of time! :) Prayers for the First Family.. and the VP family….
