Kennedy donated to both Hillary Clinton and Barack Obama.
Kennedy donated to both Hillary Clinton and Barack Obama.

WASHINGTON (CNN) – Caroline Kennedy’s $2,300 donation to Hillary Clinton’s presidential campaign was not returned because of her decision to endorse Barack Obama in the Democratic primary, a Clinton aide told CNN — it was sent back because the New York senator’s loss meant she would not be able to keep funds that had been contributed for her general election campaign.

The return was first reported Monday by the New York Post’s Page Six. Information available on Opensecrets.org confirms that a donation to Clinton from Kennedy was returned in August of this year, but does not provide any reason that the $2,300 was returned. Information available from the Web site of the Federal Election Commission shows that Kennedy donated the legal maximum of $4,600 to Clinton in June 2007 in two separate donations of $2,300 each.

Individual donors are limited to $2,300 to support a candidate’s primary run, and $2,300 to support a general election run for the White House.

A spokesman and adviser to Sen. Clinton informed CNN that Kennedy was one of approximately 8,000 donors who all had their contributions for Clinton’s general election bid returned on the same day four months ago.

How come all the media always refers to her as Kennedy? I thought her name was Schlossberg. I guess the media wants to continue to support the Camelot image for someone so barely involved in the political process she forgot to vote for 16 years. Yes, she is about as qualified as my little finger (or middle).

Lynn   December 30th, 2008 10:25 pm ET

Just who does who does Little Miss Caroline thinks she is, Just because she's a Kennedy she knows everything. She needs to stay in NY, she's not needed in Washington. for sure, for sure.

Caroilne Kennedy is the Democratic version of Sarah Palin
***only difference Caroline is a well educated poodle and little bashful and Sarah is a pitbull and a walking time bomb will say or do anyything for attention ****

@Lauren   December 30th, 2008 9:39 pm ET

True, Kennedy has 0 experience. But i'd rather have her over that nut Falin. She has no idea about american culture, Kennedy does, her father was a part of it being the youngest president.

Palin can't answer a question such as: "What newspapers do you read?" – Katie Couric. And yet her stupid fans blame it on Couric because PALIN messed up. Everyone has to be corrupt, because they have more experience than the newbies. Was her daugher TRIPPIN when she named her son? How about her drug-felon mother-in-law?

yellow dog democrat   December 30th, 2008 9:20 pm ET

You know this is not a very good topic – but hopefully the NY Governor will appoint the most qualified person for the "Clinton Senatorial Seat".....

NY folks should know who would be good for NY in the Senate.....the rest of us are just sitting in the peanut gallery throwing popcorn at the politicians....

jaye   December 30th, 2008 9:12 pm ET

Caroline Kennedy will be an excellent senator – and I hope she is chosen.

Sue   December 30th, 2008 9:12 pm ET

Why does everyone keep calling her Caroline Kennedy? Isn't she Caroline Kennedy Schlossberg?

Lauren   December 30th, 2008 8:27 pm ET

Hey setys,

If Caroline is so qualified to be senator,,, why will she ONLY take the position if APPOINTED to it?????

She has openly said she will not run a full fledged campaign to get the job. In others words,,, she is saying,, I am entitled, I am special, I am a Kennedy, give me what I want so I will not have to WORK for it.

People SLAMMED Palin for her grammer, her speech, and her You bethcas,,,,,,,

I betcha they rank just a bit lower than Carolines you knows,,,,,,,,,,,,

Geri   December 30th, 2008 8:27 pm ET

I just read the article again and where does it say she donated the same to Obama. Think Uncle Teddy had a big hand in getting her to support Obama.

Emma from Texas   December 30th, 2008 8:26 pm ET

I supported Obama since the beginning and when Obama won in June, he asked us to help Hillary pay her debt. So, I donated to Hillary. So, what's the big deal??? I would love to see Caroline Kennedy become the next senator of New York. She will be a great senator. God bless her!

No Hillary = No Obama   December 30th, 2008 8:07 pm ET

Kennedy backed Obama but wants Hillary's seat in the senate!Entitlement really is blind.

Rob Stumpf   December 30th, 2008 7:27 pm ET

Your comment was so intelligent, has anyone every approched you about running for public office? <<<

Why, have you been so approached? You know....I really doubt it. You know. Thanks for being Proud of America, but unfortunately, I must tell you....America is not proud of you. In fact, we're a bit ashamed.

Caroline Kennedy is a fraud. You know. She is not qualified, you know, and the Senate should be reserved, you know, for people with a minimal level of you know....experience.

Joyce   December 30th, 2008 7:15 pm ET

Perhaps the New York post is to blame in this issue for not reporting the entire story i.e., why money was returned.

rachel   December 30th, 2008 7:13 pm ET

My point is, that it seems, kiind of funny to contribute to a canidate you don't plan on supporting. She donated back in 2007 so did she have a change of heart after she donated I mean the race had barely got started then. Yes I was making funny of her Ya know's. Proud American your resorting to name calling lets me know your just as intelligent as you think I am thanks, I will right in your name as well.

Citizen Watch   December 30th, 2008 7:07 pm ET

Obama supporters were so anti-dynastic politics. I would hope they would extend this same rationale to Patterson supporting Caroline Kennedy. Or are the Obamanites just as hypocritical as those they charge with hypocrisy?

Voter   December 30th, 2008 7:05 pm ET

It should be up to the Governor of NYS, taking into consideration the best interests of the people of NYS ONLY to choose a senatorial appointment.

How dare this presumptuous princess pressure our governor to appoint her?

Just who does she think she is?

Oh, I know, she's a Kennedy, and Kennedys are supposed to get whatever they want.

Marian London   December 30th, 2008 6:49 pm ET

Caroline Kennedy is a good decent woman and human being and she would make a very good senator for NY. There is nothing wrong in contributing to both campaigns. After all, they both campaigned on the same Democratic party. What's wrong with that if you can afford to give to two candidates in the same party or indeed give to a Democratic candidate and a Republican as well. Fair game if you believe in the candidates.

Nija   December 30th, 2008 6:45 pm ET

I need this money now!!!!!!!!!!!!!! The gov. is bailing out everyone and what about me. Can someone tell me who is Fredie Mac and Fenie Mac.

TexAnnie *-*-*-*-*   December 30th, 2008 6:41 pm ET

This is a non-story. The $2300 donation for the primary was kept.... the $2300 donation for the general was returned– just as the law prescribes.
I don't see a story here- or did no one else read that Clinton's campaign also returned general election donations to 8000 other people for the same reason.
And if any of you people find it odd that someone (especially with lots of money) donates to multiple candidates. then you're not too savvy in the political world. It happens ALL the time.

mARGE   December 30th, 2008 6:35 pm ET

Oh goodness here we go again. The MSM is starting on Hillary Clinton can they not find some one else to pick up...this crap is getting old and stupidier by the second. You know like , you know Caroline Kennedy the brain. Another suck up for the press.

bettyc, Havre de Grace, MD   December 30th, 2008 6:35 pm ET

You have a choice. An adulterer who has an enormous ego and questionable ethics, or a sharp bright female who has spent a lifetime around politics and politicians, and has done "good things" and now wants to serve the people. Anyone who supports Cuomo is really supporting machine politics New York style. Good Luch Caroline. Perhaps you can contimue an interest in the things that your father was unable to complete.

Apples for sale   December 30th, 2008 6:28 pm ET

She is an honerable and trustworty person from everything I can find out about her and that should be something to consider in this day and age, plus she doesnt owe any special interests anything.Hi, you may know him as Richard Rohde or Rod Stumpf.he is crying out for help but nobody is listening.I think he is a seriously injured vet.He could have a serious a brain injury. Please dont feed into his need for attention by fueling his hatred. He may have gone to war under a false belief and now doesnt want to admit it. He may lost his limb or limbs and mental ability and has to sit in a wheel chair all day and night spewing his hatred at anyone he can find on the internet. If you know him please have him seek a mental health doctor.

Susan   December 30th, 2008 6:25 pm ET

What exactly qualifies this woman to be a US Senator? You would think that the American people might have learned that it takes a little more than just last name recognition to govern a country. They elected Bush, beyond a doubt the most unquailified and dangerous man, that has ever held office in the US, based only on his last name, and look what the US and indeed the world got for that horrible error in judgement.

Denise P Quinton   December 30th, 2008 6:24 pm ET

lCaroline Kennedy is not qualified due to her born heritage to take over a seat in the Senate. Maybe that was her reason f or teaming against Hilary Clinton on going out of her way to endorse and selll Obama as the New Kennedy era.......he will never come close in any way, shape, or form.
Caroline should go back to just raising her children and doing her charitable foundations and stay away from politics.

joe smith   December 30th, 2008 6:15 pm ET

nothing new here; the teamsters always bet both sides of the fence, that way they remain in control..

PJP   December 30th, 2008 6:11 pm ET

Maybe she got confused to whom she had donated and who she had not! Ya KNOW!!!

Francisco Cardenas   December 30th, 2008 6:10 pm ET

Senator Caroline Kennedy!

RETURN OF MONEY   December 30th, 2008 6:10 pm ET

Why would Clinton return all those checks while she is still in debt? i dont get it but i am sure she has an explanation for it.

It will be nice to get some press conference, but i know that would not happen. Either way, this has nothing to do with Kennedy's qualification for the seat.

SHE SHOULD BE THE NEXT NY SENATOR...cos i find no one more credible, honest, trustworthy as a NYorker...there is a reason independent mayor like Bloomberg support supports her.

I told you so   December 30th, 2008 6:06 pm ET

who cares Kennedy is no serious canadite. What has she ever done except live her spoiled little life off her great grandfathers illegal sale of alchole in prohabition days?

Jacque Bauer   December 30th, 2008 6:04 pm ET

Hillary could make or break Ms. Schlossburg's future with a twinkle from her eye. I wouldn't start packing just yet for D.C., Caroline...!

Marie   December 30th, 2008 5:59 pm ET

I'm sure there will be plenty of hate now directed at HIllary by Obama supporters. For people who say hey are all about hope and change, and who constantly complained about how mean Sarah Palin was, there sure is a lot of nastiness and hate on the left. Have you read the comments from this group of progressives about Bristol Palin whos only crime was to have a mother who ran against Obama. CNN spends a lot of time covering the mean nasty people on the right, but they virtually ignore the hate on the left. During the campaign I supported Clinton, and was appalled that people of my party could behave they way they were. I went third party for President, if this is hope and change people, you can keep it, how about your actions match your words, stop with the hate.

Willy Brown   December 30th, 2008 5:57 pm ET

Caroline is as about as experienced and Obama is for political office. So she'd fit right into the democratic mold

Loretta   December 30th, 2008 5:49 pm ET

Its hard to believe the Clintons were honest enough to returned any money. I don't trust them, never have, never will.

Lori Lynn   December 30th, 2008 5:48 pm ET

If I were Clinton, I would return the money, too, especially since Caroline spoke out against Hillary and supported Obama.

And, ya know, I really hope that the Gov. picks the most qualified individual to fill Clinton's senate seat – someone who speaks their mind in a clear and concise manner, without a lot of "ya knows"!

Oh boy   December 30th, 2008 5:40 pm ET

I don't think this particular story is a big deal. $2300 might be a ton to the average American but this is chump change for them. This sounds like typical political protocol and I don't smell a rat here.

Beah   December 30th, 2008 5:32 pm ET

Why do Americans make fun of their fellow Americans who work hard trying to make a difference in this country? I bet people who talk trash are the once who doesn't do a thing in their community! Most of the time these people are bitter because they are jealous and unhappy about their lives.

happy new year   December 30th, 2008 5:29 pm ET

she supported the democratic party.

Don   December 30th, 2008 5:17 pm ET

you know....you know...you know....

Li Li   December 30th, 2008 5:11 pm ET

Isn't this something! Caroline Kennedy who is rich is getting her money back but what about all the lttle donors who believed in her and give all they could afford to support her? I think the main point is overlooked here. The wealthiest people who donated should be the last people to get their money back. If I had donated to her campaign, I would be furrious. After all I actuallly worked for my money.

Proud American   December 30th, 2008 5:10 pm ET

ANA G. LOS ANGELES. CA   December 30th, 2008 5:01 pm ET

I think rachel was making fun of kennedys "you know"

ANA G. LOS ANGELES. CA   December 30th, 2008 4:57 pm ET

Why was she donating to clinton when she was supporting Obama. I dont like this lady and her sence of entitlement NY needs to give her the boot.

Texas Teacher   December 30th, 2008 4:55 pm ET

Well, there you go.... transparency is simply not enough for some people.... unless her name is Sarah Palin! *LOL*

That "you know" and "And"... is just a common speaking flaw for those who think of what they say as they say it.... it is about deliberation... they think things out very carefully even as they speak... *shrug* not ignorance. It can become annoying, but once you understand what is behind, it is a little less annoying.

Now I will bet money that you never got tired of hearing Palin "you betcha"... and go all over the place with little meaning in the same sentence.. I never heard a person who could skirt a subject so easily and fool so many people!

Boogles the mind! :)

Dave in Atlanta   December 30th, 2008 4:26 pm ET

Uh Rachel? A lot of people give money to both candidates in an election. Especially wealthier people. There are a lot of people that donated money to both Obama and McCain.

Richard Rohde   December 30th, 2008 4:25 pm ET

Never know hill or Bill to return any money, you know, are you sure this story is true, you know.

setys   December 30th, 2008 4:25 pm ET

I don't see anything wrong with Ms. Caroline Kennedy donating to both candidates. They are all members of Democratic party. It shows the good nature of Ms. Kennedy.

All you always fishing for negative things to say about Ms. Kennedy, get a life. I respect her greatly and she is qualify to be the next New York senator.

God Bless Ms. Kennedy.

Dan, TX   December 30th, 2008 4:21 pm ET

Like many Obama supporters, after Clinton withdrew from the race and endorsed Obama, I donated to the Clinton campaign because Obama asked us to help pay Clinton's campaign debts. Caroline did too. Only a very strange person could find something negative about this.

Practical, common sense, progressive conservative. That's me. That's Obama. That's why I supported him.

I contributed to Clinton and Obama.

What's you point???????

All conspiracy fans please don their tin foil hats. It is not uncommon for people with lots of money to support more than one candidate in their party–and occasionally to cross party lines. You know.

Making a mountain out of a mole hill here. Question? Why would you give money to someone your not supporting? Answer. It's called covering your own -. I don't like it it's dishonest and shows a lack of character.
