Vicki Iseman is suing editors and reporters at the New York Times who worked on a story about her and Sen. McCain.
Vicki Iseman is suing editors and reporters at the New York Times who worked on a story about her and Sen. McCain.

(CNN) - A lobbyist who was romantically linked to Sen. John McCain in a New York Times article has sued the paper for $27 million, saying the story has damaged her career and "sense of personal self-worth."

Vicki Iseman sued the New York Times Company and writers and editors who worked on the front-page story, which she said falsely intimated she had an affair with the senator and used their relationship to gain perks for her clients.

"The damage to Ms. Iseman caused by the story has continued to the present and has not abated," the lawsuit said. "The article destroyed the heart and soul of Ms. Iseman's professional identity and sense of personal self-worth."

The Times issued a statement saying it stands by the story, according to the Richmond Times-Dispatch.

The lawsuit charges that The New York Times acted with negligence and malice in publishing the article, having "utterly failed to find evidence supporting their preconceived hypothesis that Sen. McCain and Ms. Iseman had a romantic relationship."

The lengthy report, which ran February 21, said McCain aides became so concerned about the relationship between the two that they blocked her access to the senator during his first campaign for the Republican presidential nomination.

The lawsuit details comments that reporters and editors from other media outlets made about the story in which they said the Times implied an inappropriate or romantic relationship.

Cheaters cheat. McCain cheated when married to wife#1, and it's no surprise he cheated when married to wife #2. This woman and #2 are almost interchangeable...so why is this news?

Oh, right...she wants MONEY. Sigh...that's SO last season...

Hopefully, their loss in the lawsuit will cause the NYT to go bankrupt and thus their demise. What a pity....................................

bushisuseless   December 31st, 2008 6:09 pm ET

Poor loser republican they just can't accept that their moral issue is as much as or even worse than the charge they trying to nail Clinton with. Sorry but I do believed that the New York Times has a legitimate evidence since they are standing up to their story. I can't wait for her lawsuit. I hope it's an open hearing so we'll hear the dirty stuff. As for John Mcain he's much more worse than Bill Clinton cause Bill never left Hillary when she needed him most.

Another loser looking for a free ride

You must be confusing Republicans with Barney frank.

Paul in SC   December 31st, 2008 5:37 pm ET

NYT will print anything w/o checking it out. Even an e-mail from the Mayor of Paris...and then beg forgiveness.

Terry   December 31st, 2008 5:28 pm ET

So the story is that McCain's campaign aides thought he was having an affair with this lobbyist. The aides are not mentioned by name that I can find. This is just gossip. It is the cheapest shot in journalism: to claim that you are not repeating gossip, you are reporting that certain anonymous people believe some gossip – which is then repeated in detail. Whether it is true or not is irrelevant. The paper that reported it didn't care, McCain's staffers didn't care, and I certainly don't care. A roll in the hay is not anybody's business and its not news. Not having an affair is also not anybody's business and its not news either.

Denise   December 31st, 2008 5:22 pm ET

This should be interesting. Where is McCain's denial of the NYT story?

=====
Honey, you need to get your facts straight. McCain cheated on his first wife with numerous women, not just Cindy. You can read a lot of information provided by the men who served in the military with him. Then, after his return, he began an affair with Cindy, while still married to his first wife. You can check that out too. Pres. Reagan and his wife were very upset with McCain for this affair. McCain and his first wife were still living together while he was carrying on his affair.

As a note – until the divorce is final, you are still married and sleeping with another woman IS an affair.

LAUR   December 31st, 2008 4:16 pm ET

I suspect NYT will seek to settle. We'll find out how angry this gal is if she insists on going to court or refuses a settlement that includes a non-disclosure clause.

She swears in the complaint that she never had a romantic or sexual relationship with McCain. If that is a lie, she is making a false statement to the court and could go to jail. Why would she take that risk? This is an aggressive, well argued suit, which is generally a stance people take when they feel truly wronged, not when they are just angling for advantage. I think the worst possible plaintiff to face must be a smart person with financial means who feels truly wronged. That is what the NYT has in this lobbiest. Can't say I blame her.

She has a lot going for her, including a lot of very revealing comments by NYT editors, including their public editor, who questioned whether this story should have been published.

When I read the complaint, my first conclusion is that this will certainly spell the end of the so-called 'public editor' function at newspapers. That is the guy who comments on the newspaper's coverage, supposedly from a neutral third-party pov. A lot of the big papers have toyed with this idea on and off. But if I were a newspaper public editor, or ombudsman or whatever they call it, I'd be looking hard for a job right now, as I predict no paper will continue such a post after their lawyers read this complaint. The NYT's public editor potentially worsened the paper's liability position.

Texas Teacher   December 31st, 2008 4:13 pm ET

Wendy.... yep.... the Repubs did everything but burn Clinton on the White House lawn....hoods and all! All those years... all our tax dollars..... Seriously... to prove the man was unfaithful to his wife! And through that whole witch hunt, Clinton left the country in good shape... not like Bush who has raped the nation in the name of making he and his cronies richer than they already were!

Only 20 more days until it is over... and we can begin to climb out of this hole the Repubs have dug us into. Obama is change.... that we need desparately!

Texas Teacher   December 31st, 2008 4:07 pm ET

That is all McCain... and especially Palin did through their campaigning. Seriously.... you have been spending WAY too much time listening to Limbaugh and Fox News. You are OUT of touch with reality, my poor dear!.

We the People voted for Obama to get away from the Republican style of politics.... as well as the Limbaugh/Fox News type of media mentality! Face it, 75% of All Americans are ready for the Republican Smear type tactics to end... ready to usher out G.W. Bush and Company! And that goes for both parties! Obama is the beginning of the change... and all I can say if, praise God!

Change is a comin'...... fasten your seat belt and get ready for the ride... or risk being left along the way with the Republican style of politics.... that good ole boy, ole time politics is on the WAY OUT!

Hippies... for the last time... Billy the Sexual Predator was NOT impeached over sex... it was because he lied under oath in a grand jury investigation. ie the whole "high crimes" thing.

If he lied about his weight or eye color, it's still a lie... and if it's under oath, he committed an impeachable offense. Sorry, I didn't write the laws, I just insist they be enforced.

"I didn't think the article had substance, personally. This woman probably has a good case. But the NYT is still the best paper in country."

I'm gonna tell you right now, she is not going to win. No editor or writers are gonna write false stories without their sources. If there is some false information, then maybe but based on what I'm hearing, just because this woman's feelings got hurt she suing the Newspaper. And I don't even read the Times for crying out loud, let alone, I don't even read newspapers, LOL!!

If she did had an affair, then I don't know what she's going to fight about...

J.P.   December 31st, 2008 3:59 pm ET

It's pretty bad when the National Enquirer scoops the vaunted Grey Lady... but then again, avoiding being scooped would actually require NYT journalists to actually GET OFF THEIR BUTTS AND INVESTIGATE A STORY... (cough cough John Edwards baby-daddy cough cough).

With "motivated journalists" like this, Watergate would have never been uncovered and Nixon would have gotten away unscathed.

As for this McCain "scandal," why let facts stand in the way of a good story, eh? ...especially when it aides the MSM's push to install the first minority president. The Sixties are over, hippies, can we all get past race now?

Texas Teacher   December 31st, 2008 3:57 pm ET

True or not.... that is the McCain type of politics... we saw it all through the campaign. So in one way or another, one can only say.... "if the truth hurts, let it hurt." At some time or other in our lives, we all have to come to grips with that old saying.

Bob   December 31st, 2008 3:48 pm ET

The New York Times is a joke of a paper. It's as simple as that. I consider them in the same category as the Enquirer.

As to how papers work, there's an older movie called "Absence of Malice" with Paul Newman and Sally Field, and it just about perfectly describes the lack of integrity so prevalent in journalism.

Juana W., Houston   December 31st, 2008 3:46 pm ET

Everybody had already forgotten that incident. It is so old so lame and without any logical supporting fact by Ms. Iseman.

If I remember correctly, the NYT never suggested any sort of romantic relationship between this lady V. Iseman and Senator McCain. What it was stated by the paper was her proximity to the Senator and the connections and favors that could derive from such a close relationship.

Now, it appears that Ms. Iseman is trying to get a financial benefit from that connection; and that is the only valid reason she brought up the topic again. Everybody had already forgotten about her "business relationships and clients."

Terry, Lakeland Florida   December 31st, 2008 3:45 pm ET

It should come as no shock that mcCain would cheat on a wife…he did it to the lady who waited out his POW time….Now that's a real man!

It's funny to read some of the right wing neo con morons' comments. Why is it none of you were screaming and ranting when Karl Rove was telling lies about McCain when he ran against Bush? Guess it's okay to spead lies as long as it remains in the party. You're all nothing but a bunch of two bit hypocrites.

Craig in Washington   December 31st, 2008 3:32 pm ET

For all of you invoking Clinton's moral lapse, you seem to have forgotten something. Congressman Henry J. Hyde, who lead the Republican-dominated impeachment proceedings against Clinton, was himself an adulteror. He had an affair with a married woman when he was 42 and ruined her marriage. After this was brought to light, he brushed it off as "a youthful indiscretion". At age 42. I guess it only matters who throws the first stone. Is that right?

Michael J, Toronto   December 31st, 2008 3:32 pm ET

Did anyone here actually read the story? There was NO EVIDENCE to back up their accusation that McCain and this woman cheated together. This article was meant to damage the reputation of John McCain and I hope this woman gets every penny she is asking for!

BigBear   December 31st, 2008 3:32 pm ET

Tom says "when we get rid of all the Republicans our nation will move forward". To where? Just today, another liberal tried to take God out of the Inauguration. Those idiots have already taken God out of School, out of court, out of public places. They have added over 1,000,000 new laws interfering with an American's right to live as he/she sees fit, they have added new taxes on top of old taxes, on top of older taxes. So tell me, just what nation is left to move anywhere?
Right on Democrats. Another ten years and I'll watch the demise of democracy and the implementation of whatever ends up taking its place.

You have to remeber, Sen. Mccain had an affair with Cindy while he was still married to his first wife. He was quite open about it in his book and in past interviews. John Edwards also denied his affair for years before those picture came out and he didn't even have a history of adultery like Mccain does. Think about it. Also, this is the man who swore Palin was fit to be Vice President or even President during the campaign but afterwards said he's not sure he would vote for her.

It's about time someone gave the New York TImes what they deserve.

The newspaper went on a liberal-partisan rampage this year, smearing McCain (and Hillary) and deifying Obama without any concern for facts or journalistic integrity.

Finally, the New York Times will learn the cost of their actions. (About $27 million)

jenbeee   December 31st, 2008 3:08 pm ET

I'm a liberal and I honestly don't give a crap whether McCain had a romantic relationship with this lobbyist or not. That's a red herring. What concerns me is whether McCain, as potential president of the USA, was too close to lobbyists in general, and overly beholden to them and/or susceptible to their influence. I haven't seen anything that refutes that. As to whether Iseman has a case, well, we'll find out! I would certainly be angry if a newspaper hinted that I had an affair with a public official when I didn't. I suspect the liability will come down to exactly what the Times said and how they said it.

Diversity is the key   December 31st, 2008 3:08 pm ET

Three fingers will point right back at you.

Why is everyone blaming the Democrats about this. They didn't print the story. And I totally agree with others who stated that the MEDIA and NOT only the NYT print these types of stories about others. They have you GUILTY before even that facts are out there. For an example: The woman who jumped to her death last week from the cruise ship that they started to blame the husband just because they had a domestic call about them in the past. Now her PARENTS are stated that they strongly believe their daughter committed SUICIDE because she had some MENTAL issues. Where is the apology from the MEDIA regarding this? They MEDIA should be sued for issuing these accusations. Enough of people did this they just might SHUT the heck up before judging them in the press...

Your comment is awaiting moderation.
Vicki: did you or did you not have a romantic or otherwise relationship with Senator McCain? That's question one. Secondly, did you or did you not use your relationship (in any shape or from) with Senator McCain, to further your business, or gain access on behalf of, or for any of your clients? The third question is: how does the article destroy the heart and soul of your professional identity and sense of personal self-worth? Unless you did not have any self-worth at all in the first place!

They look so good together; I thought they were very close? If it's too good to be true; it maybe true.

Go get a life woman! You want 27 Million for what; this is not Wall Street and no share of the 700 Billion.

I'm just saying   December 31st, 2008 2:45 pm ET

Who the heck cares about politicians personal and sexual lives?!!? The NYT is just like any other paper in the country in that it's trying to survive and SELL PAPERS! It makes more money printing this irrelevant trash because this country eats it up...

I didn't care when Clinton did it, I don't care if McCain did it... Most great leaders probably have. Nothing but irrelevant distractions to the electorate...

Once you vote Black   December 31st, 2008 2:44 pm ET

LIBERAL FOR LIFE   December 31st, 2008 2:41 pm ET

this would not be the first time McCain has had an affair. Cindy his current wife was the other woman at one time

chuck   December 31st, 2008 2:41 pm ET

I WILL ONLY SAY --SEE HOW JOHN MCCAIN TREATED HIS FIRST WIFE WHILE HE WAS DATING HIS SECOND. THE OLD FELLOW IS A MEAT LOVER--TYPICAL REPUBLICAN--YOUNG AND OLD. NO SHAME, NO PRIDE,NO AMBITION.

Will18E   December 31st, 2008 2:40 pm ET

Wait a minute, I thought the GOP was for tort reform?
I guess not when it's there turn to file a frivolous lawsuit.

Lori In DFW, Texas   December 31st, 2008 2:37 pm ET

Look in Webster's Dictionary under "hypocrisy", and you'll see a picture of the symbol of the Republican Party. If I had enough shoes, I would be throwing them at every Republican out there. "Family Values", my dyin' a$$!

Bowman   December 31st, 2008 2:35 pm ET

I am with you sg, I hope this puts the NY Times under. Even the National Enquirer would not want to buy them.

Spencer   December 31st, 2008 2:35 pm ET

Seems like a personal issue that no one, especially one posting on a website, is really qualified to interject their opinion.

Bob   December 31st, 2008 2:34 pm ET

Clinton was impeached for lying to investigators, lying under oath etc. Clinton was not impeached for being a jerk scounderal woman abuser puke.

Newspapers (and all media) needs to be held accountable for the scurilious words they print or utter.

Belle   December 31st, 2008 2:34 pm ET

Did anyone see the round table on MSNBC where Chris Mathews blasted the media for not sending teams of reporters to Chicago to investigate Obama last summer?

Wasn't he the guy that reported shivers up his leg after he heard Obama speak?

Betsie   December 31st, 2008 2:33 pm ET

Hmmm..., Ms. Iseman looks kind of like Cindy McCain.

Belle   December 31st, 2008 2:31 pm ET

Actually, this will never go to trial. The 27 Million is a figure guaranteed to produce a settlement as opposed to trial.

Civil litigation will go on for about 2-3 years for discovery and if it goes to trial the NY Times will appeal, and that adds another 5-7 years.

She has a strong case. They will settle or NY Times will file bankruptcy.

Meka   December 31st, 2008 2:30 pm ET

This is not news. McCain has always been a Womanizer...ask Carol McCain!

delilah   December 31st, 2008 2:30 pm ET

AnaB   December 31st, 2008 2:29 pm ET

Please Noah, just like many repubs who spend their days on here bashing liberals and Obama 24/7.

I guess I could be considered a liberal, but I don't blame this woman, true or not, I could care less who sleeps with who.

Mike   December 31st, 2008 2:29 pm ET

Wendy,

Former President Clinton was impeached for commiting perjury, not for his indiscretions.

joann   December 31st, 2008 2:28 pm ET

The liberal media had been way too far to legitimate everything for their own candidate during the election. I hope Ms. Iseman will win and give the lesson to other liberal media for what they had done during the election.

If Ms. Iseman wins, I think Senator McCain has the right to also sue NYT even much bigger because the damage that NYT has caused to the senator was much much bigger than Ms. Iseman's damage.

Chris in VT   December 31st, 2008 2:28 pm ET

The NYT does not print without fact checking – if the facts are wrong then the Times was being lied to by all their sources?! Since they are standing by the story, this tells me that they feel they have credible facts and their sources believed there was something more going on.

sandee in Portland   December 31st, 2008 2:27 pm ET

Well, it wouldn't be the first time McCain's done this....such an honorable man.

Crazy Canuk   December 31st, 2008 2:26 pm ET

Countdown until the crazy Right-Wingers blame the left for everything they don't like. Who has been in power the last 8 years? Are you better off now than 8 years ago?... Didn't think so!

downsteamJim   December 31st, 2008 2:26 pm ET

The NYT was pro maverick [non conservative] McCain until it was apparent he had the nomination. The NYT then did all it could to sink him without regard to facts. They endorsed Obama as the education candidate but would not investigate his Annenberg activities in Chicago. NYT = dying partisan rag.

Jacqueline in Missouri   December 31st, 2008 2:26 pm ET

You notice that John McCain is not trying to sue them, he is probably the one who leaked the story......

Avid1010   December 31st, 2008 2:25 pm ET

Some of these comments crack me up...especially the person who thinks a $27 mil. law suit will force the NYT's into bankruptcy.

I'm still waiting for Pickens to pay out on his promise after the Swift Boat Attacks were proven false. Like the NYT or not, they're not known for running bogus stories...far less than most major papers.

The list of politicians guilty of what McCain was accused of is a mile long. I question why anyone cares.

VOTED! OBAMA!!! VOTED! OBAMA!! VOTED!   December 31st, 2008 2:23 pm ET

Here we going taking the right and left side of anything political, lets wait for the outcome before we judge the NYT or V. Iseman. This name may ring a bell when a certain paper reported on him "JOHN EDWARDS" but it doesn't matter to the right or the left because people think their opinion is the only one that matters right.

Directed to the 11 people who have commented so far.

MikeH   December 31st, 2008 2:22 pm ET

Oh hey, you unlocked the 'Add Comments", I thought 11 comments was pretty small.

So, why does she do this now instead of Nov 5?

Noah, David, Rohde, you're all the same person aren't you? Your posts suggest you graduated from a bible-thumper school. Your ignorance is so fundamental, it's that or you likely didn't make it through an accredited high school.

Too bad the Ayrian Nation compound in Sandpoint, Idaho was bulldozed, they would have given you a home there.

Lori, Houston Texas   December 31st, 2008 2:20 pm ET

No matter what newspaper the story came from, if someone (man or woman) cheats WITH you, he/she will also cheat ON you. Mccain's advisors in 2000 should come out in public to confirm or deny this story. IMO, Vicki is looking for cold hard cash, but money can't restore her "sense of personal self-worth." That can only come from within. She's barking up the wrong tree. She need therapy to regain her "sense of personal self-worth."

James Kay   December 31st, 2008 2:20 pm ET

This woman is a disgrace and should be run out of town along with all the right wing God clingers.

JS Finley   December 31st, 2008 2:18 pm ET

I wonder if any of you have even bothered to read the original article in the NYT. It does not say that she definitively had an affair. It says that McCain staffers feared there was a "perception" of impropriety.

Before commention, read the original article, idiots.

sensible Cape Coral FL   December 31st, 2008 2:18 pm ET

Linda Kearney   December 31st, 2008 2:15 pm ET

I find this POSSIBLE ROMANTIC interest Funny as Hell!

To say that McCain is a "Romantic interest" of this younger pretty woman is laughable at best.

He's an OLD barely viagra man and she is a young woman who could do MUCH better!

Its laughable NOT damaging. NYT needs to stick to what IS wrong with America..not make stuff up!

Chris Wakemore   December 31st, 2008 2:14 pm ET

Just scum tabloid writing that should be found in a paper like the National Inquirer... I am a lib and I think that trashing "private" citizens should be a crime (well I guess getting sued kinda makes it a crime, in a way)...

If this statement is true,The lengthy report, which ran February 21, said McCain aides became so concerned about the relationship between the two that they blocked her access to the senator during his first campaign for the Republican presidential nomination. Vicki Iseman is sueing the wrong she be sueing the McCain aide that blocked her access to the senator, not New York Times Company and writers and editors

Conservatives are the only ones who hate the courts until there is money or a presidency in the balance. Suck it up Noah. She gets caught so now she gets paid? Sounds like white women privilege to me.

California Gold   December 31st, 2008 2:12 pm ET

Let's talk about the party of scandals and coverups:

Bill Clinton –

Whitewater – Travelgate Gennifer Flowersgate – Filegate – Vince Fostergate – Whitewater Billing Recordsgate – Paula Jonesgate- Lincoln Bedroomgate – Donations from Convicted Drug and Weapons Dealersgate – Lippogate – Chinagate – The Lewinsky Affair – Perjury and Jobs for Lewinskygate – Kathleen Willeygate – Web Hubbell Prison Phone Callgate – Selling Military Technology to the Chinesegate – Jaunita Broaddrick Gate – Lootergate – Pardongate
Charles Rangel – under indictment for inappropriate ways and means committee behavior
Tim Mahoney – admitted to affair in office
John Edwards – admitted to affair
Rod Blagojevich – attempted to sell senate seat
Barney Frank – admitted to having paid Stephen Gobie (a male prostitute) to have sex with him
Ted Kennedy – pleaded guilty to leaving the scene of a crime after killing his girlfriend by plunging a car off of a cliff and into the water
Eliot Spitzer – paid a prostitute to have sex with him/cheated on wife
The "Reverand" Jesse Jackson – admitted to affair and illegitimate child (maybe not so reverend)
The DNC – fined $719,000 for fundraising scandals in 1996 involving donations from China, Korea, and other foreign sources
Sowande Ajumoke Omokunde – Democrat – the son of newly elected U.S. Rep. Gwen Moore, was booked on charges of criminal damage to property for allegedly slashing tires on 20 vans and cars rented by the Republican Party for use in Election Day voter turnout efforts.

Wow...great party – the new party of ethics eh? NICE!!!

Pretty sure the far-left CNN wont post this!

Matt   December 31st, 2008 2:09 pm ET

Good for her. The press needs to realize that words have power and should not be written without honesty and thorough investigations.

Paul from Phoenix   December 31st, 2008 2:07 pm ET

I hope she wins. I am sick of seeing "Freedom of the Press" being abused. Newspapers are able to make outlandish claims, and then the retraction is in the bottom corner of page 8.

SOMEONE PLEASE THROW ANOTHER PAIR OF SHOES @ GW!!!   December 31st, 2008 2:07 pm ET

there is more to this story than john mcsame was telling. the ny times coulnd't have the balls the spill the whole beans...this what u get for cozying up to the right-wing nuts!

Change - Yeah Left   December 31st, 2008 2:06 pm ET

Yet ANOTHER example of how the left wing media decided that they were going to smear anyone who wasn't the great Obama.

It was totally utterly irresponsible of them to print something which wasn't validated. I'm sure that if it had been a Democrat with potential damage, they would have researched to the nth degree.

I hope that she wins and puts the NYT out of business!!!

Only in the Paper   December 31st, 2008 2:05 pm ET

Only in the paper are people guilty until proven innocent. And when they are found to be innocent, the paper rarely admits it and in most cases the damage is already done. It's a shame...

maxmax   December 31st, 2008 2:03 pm ET

How can McCain pick it up? he looks too old and messed up, not even viagra would work for him. did the NY Times thought about it? i guess they are too stupid. Put them under, she has to win.

OBAMA GIRL   December 31st, 2008 1:57 pm ET

timothy   December 31st, 2008 1:56 pm ET

To Wendy:

This isn't about McCain lying under oath, as Clinton did. He is not even involved in the suit. Typical of the liberal left to invent circumstances. I'm glad the NYT is being sued. Not that they will have the money to pay off when they lose. LOL Such a financially broke liberal rag!! HaHaha

Linda   December 31st, 2008 1:56 pm ET

Good for you. Get 'em.

Even though the New York times has now officially become nothing but a Gossip rag, filling the paper with biased views and personal opinions portraying that as news or fact, they are a NEWSPAPER, not a magazine and must be held accountable.

At least you can do it, unlike poiiticians falsely smeared and attacked can't seem to do it for fear of retaliation from the habitual smearing and lying papers that they are.

email4kh   December 31st, 2008 1:56 pm ET

I would imagine that having the world find out she slept with a scumbag like John McCain probably didn't do much for "Ms. Isemans's professional identity and sense of self-worth," but it isn't the Times' fault that she did it.

max   December 31st, 2008 1:56 pm ET

I just wonder if she was as good at having McCain cheat as Cindy was............

kevin   December 31st, 2008 1:55 pm ET

I love it when those right wingers get their panties in a bunch. They are the same people who gloated over Clinton's "indiscretion." They never talk about the nasty politics of destruction the Republican party has used for the last 12 years....you guys live with blinders on.

It should come as no shock that mcCain would cheat on a wife...he did it to the lady who waited out his POW time....Now that's a real man!

Matt in Oregon   December 31st, 2008 1:55 pm ET

Kind of funny how the "crazy conservatives" have jumped all over this story in preparation for the "crazy liberals". Notice you comment on CNN and read the comments expecting an onslaught of "liberal craziness". So exactly who is the crazy one here? Most of us have moved on now that we can finally see the end of what our entire society has had to endure for the past 8 years. Isn't it time for you to check in with Rush and find out what you think today?

Dave, Illinois   December 31st, 2008 1:53 pm ET

Since Bush will not be in office after Jan. 20, the NYT will loose a lot of readership. They have been a anti-Republican political rag for the last eight years. Now that the Dems hold total power, the NYT will have to find another bogyman or the Libs will have to find a rag that is even farther to the left.

tom   December 31st, 2008 1:52 pm ET

wendy-the "Sexual Predator" in Chief was rightfully impeached for perjury and obstruction of justice. It was the manicially partisian Congress that failed to remove him from office that ended up allowing Bush to be elected. That's the last 8 year legacy that the democrats have to live with. Sorry to burst the bubble of another liberal myth.

Larry in Houston   December 31st, 2008 1:52 pm ET

What makes the difference if she had an affair with him, or not ?
After so much time goes by, the issue will be gone....and she can go on with her life, no problem.........She probably should sue McCain, if she has any issue with him, because between him & his wife, they are worth hundreds of millions of dollars......remember ? 9 houses

Dee Tee Gee   December 31st, 2008 1:47 pm ET

I guess we should just forget the fact that John McCain has a history of this type of behavior. The guy walked out on his first wife at the worst of times for another woman, his current wife matter of fact. Tells me all I need to know about the guy. Just can't dismiss that this may be true. What's the big deal anyway? McCain is yesterday's news. Don't we have an inaugeration to get ready for?

NY Woman   December 31st, 2008 1:46 pm ET

This is a wait and see situation. If the story is true, it is true... If it is false, then and only then, shame on the NYT.

pyotr   December 31st, 2008 1:34 pm ET

I agree that the NY Times is the worst newspaper, except for all others. I think some of the right wingers posting to this site are guilty of highly selective perception and are enraged that the Times' reporting challenges some of the beliefs they hold so dear. Of course the Times has screwed up at times, though hardly only in its reporting on right wingers. The Times is held to a higher standard and perhaps it should be, but it is just silly to call it "the most corrupt paper in Ameria." The Wall Street Journal editorial and opinion pages are much more obviously biased.

Jim   December 31st, 2008 1:34 pm ET

What a Bimbo truth hurts!!!!!!!

New Yorker   December 31st, 2008 1:31 pm ET

Wendy, the fact is there were grounds for impeachment. The Times was just trying to destroy McCain by using this woman. I hope she wins the suit, but with such corruptness abounding I doubt she will.

Sue   December 31st, 2008 1:30 pm ET

I'd rather be a crazy liberal than a blind Republican who still believes Bush was good for this country and committed no acts of treason. And I'm sure that loyal Republicans Noah and David never posted one negative thought about Obama or Hillary in the past year.

Alan   December 31st, 2008 1:30 pm ET

No, I have nothing negative to say about this woman's lawsuit or McCain. The Times is newspaper. I want them to be unbiased, give the news all facts, no hype, no spin. If I want that I'll go the editorials pages. Besides any time in media outlet runs a story that makes repugs look bad they call them liberal. (you make yourself look bad)
By the way that chic looks ALOT like Cindy McCain. I think McCain has a thing for blondes like Hugh Heffner.

Talk to the old ballarina in South America who knew (?) McVain while he was a midshipman. It is just a fact that he always liked the LADIES maybe a little too much.

Ed, Santa Fe, NM   December 31st, 2008 10:24 am ET

sense of personal self-worth? GIMME A BREAK

she's a lobbyist after all! but a victim just the same.... LOL

Andrea/ CA   December 31st, 2008 10:24 am ET

Noah, It is people like you that will continue to try to divide this nation with stupit comments like that. To you it is us and them, instead of US. Grow up. Before you accuse, read what you write, and then think before you blog. Happy New Year. And Grow up.

NYT   December 31st, 2008 10:22 am ET

Business is business.

Danny in Chicago   December 31st, 2008 10:20 am ET

Noah......did you even WATCH the campaigns this year?

Who was bad mouthing WHO again?

Republicans never cease to amaze me....

MLH   December 31st, 2008 10:19 am ET

I don't understand the comment by Noah, but as a self identified 'crazy Liberal', I would say the woman is seeking relief from the judiciary for a wrong that she believes was perpetrated against her. Access to the courts is one of the things that I love about my country.

As for bad mouthing Senator McCain, some of us spent more time supporting our candidate than tearing the other down. The measure of our success can be seen on Inauguration Day.

Saul- Virginia   December 31st, 2008 10:18 am ET

Fox news to me is the worst, most biased, self rightious media outlet in the country. I am a moderate and used to watch fox but now, i will rather watch the discovery channel. Atleast i will hear something positive and educative.

Bolaji   December 31st, 2008 10:18 am ET

'...damaged her ... "sense of personal self-worth."'? McCain THAT detestable?

Terry, Lakeland Florida   December 31st, 2008 10:17 am ET

Good, She should have sued them for $100 million. It's about time someone held the NYT accountable for telling lies...it's not the first time they've be caught telling lies in order to sell papers, I think she should sue them for all the profit they made and then some.

True Blue Ohio   December 31st, 2008 10:17 am ET

Though I am a Democrat, I never believed this story. The timing of the story's release is questionable and only seemed probable because so many other poltical figures were encroached in scandal. It is not fair to accuse anyone of infidelity because the allegation in itself is extremely damaging even if the accused is innocent.

sky   December 31st, 2008 10:15 am ET

So is she mad because they talked about it or because she didnt do it? These people 9 times out of 10 sue because someone dared to print the truth about them. The crime itself, the unethical behavior, gets lost in the battle which is just what they want. They want to act badly and not have to answer for it. They want to do, what they want to do and have everyone look the other way......then make the people who tell on them into the criminal. It is always the guy who tells who ends up looking like the jerk....they want it that way.....so people will be reluctant to tell....but the truth really is....the guy who tells, who stands up and says what he/she knows to be the truth...is the real hero and these sleeze bags shouldnt be able to do their sleezy crap and have everyone turn their heads.

Sanity has Returned   December 31st, 2008 10:11 am ET

Hey Noah and David, I'm a liberal and could care less about McCain, his alleged affairs, Palin, ect.. and I love reading the NYT. I'm looking forward to Jan 20, 2009 and plan on looking towards the future and not living in the past like the other party. Happy New Year!

CHANGE.COM   December 31st, 2008 10:10 am ET

Vicki: did you or did you not have a romantic or otherwise relationship with Senator McCain? That's question one. Secondly, did you or did you not use your relationship (in any shape or from) with Senator McCain, to further your business, or gain access on behalf of, or for any of your clients? The third question is: how does the article destroy the heart and soul of your professional identity and sense of personal self-worth? Unless you did not have any self-worth at all in the first place!

MK   December 31st, 2008 10:07 am ET

My "personal sense of self worth" would have been adversely affected if I was accused of sleeping with John McCain too.

BB   December 31st, 2008 10:06 am ET

He couldn't keep his eyes off of Palin's butt and boobs either. It was sickening to watch. Why can't women have more respect for themselves and tell the old womanizer to stop it.

Dj   December 31st, 2008 10:05 am ET

Dang!!!! They look so much alike, she and Cindy could be sisters...

Donna   December 31st, 2008 10:04 am ET

Noah–are you familiar with the concept of projection? That's when you attribute to others your own characteristics. Certainly, there are some people who claim to be liberal who "bad mouth" John McCain. There are just as many who claim to be conservative who have written horrible things about the Obamas. The fact is that, by posting about the "crazy liberals" who you claim will start posting ugliness, you are doing exactly the same thing. Or do you believe that it's ok when it's you?

Frank   December 31st, 2008 10:02 am ET

Good for her. Being slimed by the times has to make her skin crawl. I hope she is able to hold individuals personally responsible for the slander and it would be good to see the NY Slimes take an extra-ordinary financial hit over this.

The NY Times is corrupt and disgusting and should not be afforded the respect that an unbiased news organization should have.

LIP   December 31st, 2008 10:01 am ET

Yellow journalism is becoming a way of the past and newspapers will disappear just like the Dinosaurs and they will be missed only by their advertisers. Yellow journalism has destroyed way to many lives and where they leave off, the television media such as FOX and CNN will take up the slack. How can we ever forget the days of OJ and all the women and children that have disappeared and the endless stories as if there was nothing else to talk about...endless drivel about negative stuff of little relevance.

Al, NY NY   December 31st, 2008 9:59 am ET

3,2,1,.... Oh and a right wing paper NEVER exaggerated ANYTHING about a Democratic person...what a laugh!!! Oh and David, try reading the NY Post. That rag isn't worth the cheap paper it's printed on.

obama-mama   December 31st, 2008 9:59 am ET

Really??????? An affair?????? Really?????? LOL!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Briana the college student   December 31st, 2008 9:58 am ET

Noah the crazy conservative who criticizes liberals before anything happens. Get a life

Salt   December 31st, 2008 9:57 am ET

Noah...

Just like you are so good at hunting out the Obama stories to spew your hatred all over them?

As far as this story is concerned...innocent until proved guilty and all that, but she certainly looks like McCain's type.

john from sandiego   December 31st, 2008 9:55 am ET

the New York Times editorial staff has never claimed to be unbiased or honest, everyone is well aware of it.

Joe in CT - not Lieberman!!!   December 31st, 2008 9:54 am ET

It will be interesting to see what she does on the witness stand! Especially if the Times lawyers remind her of the definition of perjury before they ask her the "delicate" question of whether or not she had a relationship with McCain. If yes, then her case has no standing as the Times merely reported the truth. If no, then the Times better be prepared to pony up! If she refuses to answer, then the Times lawyers need to hammer away at her and drag up every questionable statement and relationship she ever had!

S.B. Stein E.B. NJ   December 31st, 2008 9:52 am ET

Who really believes this? Does it really matter if she did or didn't "sleep" with McCain? What job could it really affect? I'd like to know which jobs have been lost by the NYTimes article because I have trouble believing her problems getting a job. If the lobbyist job is a problem, then go back to school to learn another job if you need additional points on your resume. What about think tanks or other policy groups?

Noah   December 31st, 2008 9:49 am ET

Countdown until the crazy Liberals who spend their entire days posting on this forum show up and start bad mouthing this lady and John McCain. That is what they are good at doing.

David   December 31st, 2008 9:49 am ET

The NYT is the most corrupt newspaper in America.
