how does this idea fit in with state's rights?

i would hope that the us senate cannot and should not (and the president) stick their pious noses into state business.

to decide membership based on who we like or not, is what we did in my college fraternity.

oh i forgot, us leadership is a fraternity.

Where does the Congressional leadership decide who's welcome and who isn't? If you don't like the rules, then put a change onto the ballot. If the govenor by law is entitled to do what he has done, you must abide by it. If the democratic senators get sued, they're going to lose, you can count it. Harry Reid has enough problems to deal with, stop looking like a jerk.

Why are Africn Americans slamming Rush for making this a race issue? Sure he added to it, but it was made a race issue more so by the IL congressman and the appointee, and yet, very few so called black bloggers are commenting on them. Words like lynching and hanging and statements like "if they don't seat me it is because of my color" are much worse than what Rush did. I guess if the one making race an issue is black, it doesn't count?

"Rush told CNN Tuesday that the lack of African-Americans in the Senate was 'a moral outrage' that 'should make most fair-minded Americans very, very angry.'"

Gee, so we're supposed to give positions and opportunities to someone based SOLELY on the color of their skin. Uh, isn't that EXACTLY what the late Rev. Martin Luther King marched against... unfair treatment based on skin color and equal access to opportunties regardless of skin color?

Instead of using skin pigment as the determining factor, how about looking at actual accomplishments, actual skills, credentials, edu ation and the "content of a person's character?" That would certainly make Dr. King proud... hiring based on skin pigment would make the great man roll in his grave.

Also, a quick lesson from a local to all you GOP'ers from around the country.

Barack Obama is not all that powerful in Chicago compared to other local politicians. Obviously he is President (Jan. 20) but he never had the influence that guys like Blago or Daley have.

Mayor Daley backed someone else during the 2004 Senate race.

Many of the local politicians have clashed with Obama at some point - case in point, Rush ran against him for Congress (and won).

Listen to the audiotapes of Blago being mad at Obama for not playing his games.

Chicago politics are crooked as can be, we all knew that here for decades, but Barack Obama is not in the same league. I'm not naive enough to think that he's spotless, but the comments and links people are making are totally inaccurate.

Gov. Blagojevich is a jerk for appointing Burris while he is under investigation. This man is qualified for the senate seat but will not get it because of Blagojevich. As for Congressman Rush, why is he even up there talking, this has nothing to do with him.

LOL, Mr. Rush, there was an African-American in the Senate just recently, and believe it or not he was from Illinois! He's not there now because he got promoted. In fact, Carol Moseley Braun was another African-American senator from Illinois (maybe even the first ever, iirc).

Illinois does not have a problem electing African-Americans to high public offices if they are qualified. It does have a problem with corrupt officials. Stop making excuses Mr. Rush.

Rush says that it is a "moral outrage" about the lack of African Americans in the Senate, but isn't there approx 8% Afrrican-Americans in the Senate and about 12% African Americans in the the US. I think there is a much greater ratio with Latin Americans. Please correct me if I am wrong.

Mr. Burris is an excellent pick. One of the few people in Chicago who are not part of the dirty political machine.

The Senate has no right to stop his nomination. Gov. Blog is still allowed to legally appoint a Senator, thus making Mr. Burris Senate appointment legal.

If they didn't want Gov. Blog to appoint a Senator then they should have approved a Special Election and the voters of Illinois would have made the choice. However, they were so scared the Republicans might win the election they missed the boat and now they will have to honor this legal and valid Senatorial appointment.

Bobbie Rush was on Larry King last night. He seems a little out there. He is an interenting man though. Born in the deep south. Educated in Chicago. Served in the military. Co-founder of the Illinois Black Panther Party. He is the only person to beat Obama in an election. Was /is close to the Bill and Hillary, but endorsed Obama in the primary and general election.

Blago's playing everyone for chumps again!

He's injected race into the mix as a diversion from his mess and the media and the repugs are falling for it hook, line and sinker.

What I can't beleive is that both Burris and Rush are letting Blago make Uncle Tom's out of them for his personal gain...

Thats bull, its not racism, they told the governor, do not appoint and now the people are calling it racism. Just like they always say, you are discriminating because I'm black and you are white, just another pile of political correctness.

Roland Burris should never have accepted an appointment from this tainted Governor. No one else should either. It is so obvious what Blagojavich is doing. He is purposly using race to create controversy in the hopes of keeping himself relevent and "sticking it" to the ones trying to oust him. Roland Burris should not allow himself to be used that way.

What I am very, very angry about is how every black person in America who opens his mouth shows just how racially motivated he/she is. They need to take a dose of their own medicine and quit whining about the fact that through our voting process, we choose to elect people for reasons of our own. No one owes a Senate seat to a person regardless of his color, the past, the present, or even due to the fact that we elected a person of mixed color to the highest office. Also, overwhelmingly, it seems that people are treating this miscarriage of our system by the governor as an oportunity to install a favorite into office when they should be working to correct the errors in the system and get someone into office that would represent the majority and not a segregrated group of people.

And what would the topic and discussion be, if the Illinois Governor had pick someone from the PE Obama's list?

Would we say that it is was a good pick because PE Obama has good judgment, and because of his good judgment in choice, the Gov. could not have made a tainted choice. PE Obama sat in a church which many disapprove of for 20 years, but we hold the opinion that the Reverend words were not those of the President Elect? If a father commits a crime, does that taint his son/daughter future who is doing good in his/her life. Why should we decides someone's future based on someone else's mistake. I believe we were told not to "judge" one another.

To nathan @12:46et......... i find it interesting that you would find it appalling that someone would use the race card to further their objective but you yourself decided to do the same.

"The history of African Americans in this couhtry is steeped with whites doing us wrong. Getting other African Americans to help has been just as prevelent. Blagojevich and Rush continue that dual legacy."

Typical hypocrisy from a liberal!

What a farce! If the african americans want more of their race in the Senate, then more of them need to run for office. I don't see the latinos, asians, etc. screaming about their race not being represented in the senate. The senate said long before Burris was picked, they would not seat anyone the Governor appointed, so it has nothing to do with race.

The people of Illinois are allowed two (2) Senators in Congress. The Illinois Governor has been accused, however, the legal process has not concluded that any of it is really true. Why should our state be forced to operate like a bike with one tire? Mr Burris seems to be a good enough man to serve our Country untill the legal process concludes. They will have camers on Burris, so WWWWWWWWWhy not Roland Burris.

This is so ridiculous. Very very few of our senators and congressmen/women are APPOINTED. Most are ELECTED. Any remarkable lack of blacks in either the House or the Senate should be based largely on the vote of the majority of the people. Blogawhatever isn't guilty yet, but the very cloud hanging over his head INVOLVES his alleged attempts or plans to sell the very seat he just appointed.

Yes, he's innocent until proven guilty but everyone needs to realize that publicly elected officials must stand above an even tougher test -- they must be held accountable to a standard that dictates there can be no APPEARANCE of wrong-doing.

Those tapes certainly did APPEAR to be wrong actions on his part. And, until he's proven guilty, it's more than fair for the Senate to let him know they will not consider ANY appointments he suggests until such time as his name is cleared.

This very appearance issue is why he's been asked to step down. Staying where he is makes him INEFFECTIVE as a leader.

Corey, Maryland why is it people like you always want to put African Americans into one lump when you have a complaint? If you read the posts you would see that many AAs disagreed with Rush's statements. Contrary ;to your belief not all AAs scream racism when things don't go our way. But I'll tell you this, if I believe that is the reason, I will let it be known. Now if that upsets you then to bad. I'm just playing the cards that I was dealt.

If you want the Jews to halt the confllict, first, Hamas should quit firing into Israel. You don't seem to understand the situation. Israel has every right to protect themselves.
Give me a break! Rush has just put the final nail in the coffin of my opinion about the Black community. Al Sharpton gets a 15-year old girl to concoct a story about being raped by a group of white men. After she confesses to lying, he becomes his bretheren's hero, ONLY because he and she are Black. Fast forward to 2008, when 90% of Blacks vote for Obama in the primaries and general election, ONLY because he is Black. Now Rush will have us believe that a crooked governor can appoint a senator, and we must accept it ONLY because the appointee is Black. And if we oppose the appointment, says Rush, then we're all bigots like Wallace. To me, this says that the Black community is racist, and we are supposed to shut up. Well, not me.

I think it is unfortunate that Rush has added race to this already tainted appointment. Burris is political kryptonite and encasing him in the lead shield of racism does not make his appointment any more palatable to Dems. If the state of Illinois wants an African-American senator, they should elect one at the polls, and not have one appointed by this sleazebag.

Whatever else one thinks of Blago, he's a flippin' political genius (or his attorneys are). He seizes an opportunity to appoint an AA with a clean history to a vacant seat as per his statutory and our Constitutional directive. Blago is currently the governor and is not indicted or convicted of anything (90 day delay in the wings). A special election would be entirely too costly and would delay senate business. For the Dems, having this seat filled by a Dem is an extremely important thing that they'd be crazy to risk with a special election. This solves their problem if they accept the appointment. Blago gets to continue to act as Governor and he gets to muddy the waters in the new administration (he has to be bitter that he did not get any reward for the appointment). It's a win-win for Blago and the Senate will look childish and irresponsible to resist the appointment. Constitutionally and state statutory-wise both the State Legislature and the Senate are skunked. Genius, pure genuis!

I say let's have a special election and let a Republican win this one. It's obvious the Democrats have let this get out of hand.

you people (white and black) are so easily swayed by the media, it's amazing. Guilty or not, Blajo has STILL NOT BEEN CHARGED OF ANY WRONG DOING (yet). He might even just be innocent, hmm? by LAW (remember law, idiots?) he is required to make an appointment. Until he is removed from his position THAT IS HIS JOB. Just because the Democrats said "we will veto any appointment you make" does not mean that he is not still legally responsible for making an appointment.

It doesn't work like that, and if they block Burris, Blajo might even have a case in the Supreme Court. I am black and i was not offended by Rush's words "lynch" and "hang". The media machine has made the public so gullible that they get sidetracked quickly from the real issues on the table.

Burris is more than qualified for the position and if the dems will be stupid enough to veto him (and i'm sensing they will) I only hope that they can find a person with stronger credentials than Burris (and i'm sensing they wont)

Just goes to show the race card can be played by either side of the aisle. I personally thought it was the Obama campaign who played the race card both during the primary and the general. Anyone remember Bill Clinton: "he played the race card on me" or the president elect himself: " the Republicans are going to try to scare you by saying that he doesn't look like all those other presidents on the dollar bills?" I'm just saying that liberals are just as guilty as conservatives of playing the race card to their advantage. They just do not get called on it like the Republicans do. Well, they are geting called on it now. As they should. And, they need to stop dissing conservatives for it.

He had the gall to invoke Bull Connor!
For those who doesn't remember nor know, Bull Connor was a KKK member and city commisioner of Birmingham who couldn't care less the damage that his actions (or the lack of them) caused on the reputation of his city, which by then was better known as 'Bombingham', as long as he and his cronies blocked the Civil Rights Movement! The citizens of Birmingham had to change the city government's form in order to cut his powers!
And this man compares a legitimate act of the Senate Dems, and the whole Senate, to this shameful person...
Don't play the race card Mr. Rush, that's not what this whole situation is about. It's a about a (soon to be impeached) governor's legitimacy to appoint someone to represent the State (that he failed to serve with dignity) in the Senate. There is no legitimacy.
It's not about Mr. Burris skin color, Blago's or yours. It's about Blago's acts and the expected consequences of them.

Well, here's a real test for the Democratic leadership of the Senate. Will they stick by their previous statement and not seat Burris, or will they cave to PC? My guess is that they have no intestinal fortitude and will cave. They can't risk alienating the black vote that gave them Obama. Still waiting for Sharpton and Jackson to denounce this appointment. Methinks it will be a long wait.
