WASHINGTON (CNN) - Future First Lady Michelle Obama and daughters Malia and Sasha have taken a big step in their own transition to the White House.

The Obama women left Chicago and traveled to Washington Saturday, according to a pool report from the president-elect's traveling press corps.

Malia and Sasha Obama are set to begin classes Monday at Sidwell Friends, a private school in the D.C. area. Their father will arrive in Washington on Sunday evening, according to the pool report.

The Obamas are staying at the historic Hay Adams hotel near the White House until January 15, when the official guest residence at the Blair House becomes available to them. They will move into the White House on January 20 after the inauguration.

The Obama girls good luck, I know I did'nt like swiching schools in the middle of the year my Mom cheated and us finish at the school we stared but in stead of walking two blocks we walk two miles.

Mama to All   January 4th, 2009 2:36 am ET

SDB said "Oh…get over them not being able to move into the Blair House…the government/taxpayers are probably paying for their suite at the Hay Adams Hotel as well…"

The point is that the girls will have to move 3 times in 20 days, instead of 2. It's stressful for any family to move even once, and these girls are in the spotlight, changing cities, changing schools and having their lives turned upside down (for our benefit). Now please don't tell me you're so hard-hearted that you don't wish for the best for a couple of kids!?

Bush just made another A$$ of himself by booking Blair House, instead of letting the Obama Family move straight into it the week prior to the Inauguration. Can't he keep his nasty-self from mistreating children?!? Arrgh!

Why is that these little girl's hair and that of their mother's - is NEVER COMBED! Michelle just had her hair in a scarf on the beach in Hawaii, and the little ones bare shown up above with old corn-rows and a nappy ponytail! They are not only representing the USA to the world, but are representing the upwardly and progressive black community, especially black women!
KEEP YOUR HEADS COMBED! PLEASE!

I just don't understand racial prejudice. Even if you don't specifically believe in God or a particular creation story, I'm sure you believe that humans somehow came about. And just like all other living creatures, no two humans are exactly alike. So whatever mechanism caused humans to "be", he/she/it is certainly into variety! The world would be impossibly boring and dreary if we were all the same.

Where the true differences are – and what takes time and thought and courage to see – are inside: the character, the personality, the essence of a human. I understand being afraid of the unknown, but as humans, with our intellect and ability to feel, learn and love, we can easily overcome those fears. The reward is what makes this often hard life worth living. Discovering a kindred spirit, regardless of how different they may appear on the outside, is a wonderous and incredible thing.

I've lived all over the world, and I've always found people I could trust and love and learn from. The connection we had was our humanity, our interests, our concerns, not our gender, age, race, creed, color, etc., etc.

Thank goodness we are not all the same – and thank goodness we as Americans live in a country founded upon principles of equality and opportunity!

I can hardly wait until January 20!!

Jonesy.....I couldn't agree with you more. The second I see a spelling error or improper English, I stop reading the comment. This said, I only read your comment. I don't speak jibberish. If you're going to post a comment and expect people to respect what you're trying to say, you need to learn how to write properly. Please educate yourselves on the difference between the use of "there" and "their", and the difference between "your" and "you're", and so on. Basic grammar; I'm completely disgusted with the lack of elementary skills on here. P.S. Regardless of whether or not you voted for Barack Obama, he's the one you'll be needing on your side should there be an attack on American soil, so it's time to get behind him and be respectful of our future President. Besides, no one gives a rip about anyone's racist comments anymore...the whole idea of racism is getting pretty dated.

The president-elect traditionally, and historically, moves into Blair House on Jan 15th, 5 days before the swearing-in. I'm pro Obama, but I'd like to know why so many people think Obama should have special privileges and be able to usurp events & guests at Blair House for his personal convenience. He should be treated just like the 43 presidents before him. He's not God. - no matter what some people think. Blair House will be available for him on the 15th. Right on schedule.

Proud American   January 4th, 2009 1:18 am ET

Lord me know that most are so stupid even they don't know it. Lord we know they counldn't govern their way out of a paper bag, but willing still willing to work with them. Please give the Idiots a little love, understanding and the comfort of knowing that demorcrats are the best and brightest but still willing to include them as me march toward progress and a brand new day in America. Thank You Lord

Txlady615   January 4th, 2009 1:15 am ET

You people are so disgusting. Some just have to bash President Bush and blame him for everything. The Obama team should have reserved the Blair house sooner. It was weeks after the election before they even got around to asking if it was available. Of course it was booked. No big deal, they just booked the hotel, and remained gracious as did the Bush's...Why can't you be gracious? NOT!

Foolish people. For the last 60 years the Blair house has not been available until January 15th. It was rather rude of the Obamas to ask for special treatment. But I suppose that is the marker of the elitist crowd.

christula   January 4th, 2009 12:58 am ET

I don't want this to be a Paparazzi Presidency. I know you have to fill airtime and get advertising money but can you stick the real issues? I voted for this man because he talked to me like a grownup. Is it too much to ask a corporation as powerful as yourselves to do the same? It's not alot to ask.

I am definitely not a Bush supporter but everyone knows that the B lair house is not available to the incoming first family until the 15th of January so to be fair I think that we should stop bad mouthing Bush and to the Obama girls I wish you the best of luck, I know this transition will be tough

The Kennedys, Carters, and Clintons had kids and found no problem moving to DC a few days early. But of course Obama likes to make a big deal about EVERYTHING, so he moves in early. His ego is so anxious in getting to the White House that he's moved to DC earlier than any other president.

Why hasn't President Bush released the names of who will be staying in Blair house between now and January 15. Afraid the American people might be outraged to know who President Bush is giving more precedence than the NEXT PRESIDENT OF THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA AND HIS FAMILY?

And CNN should be ashamed of its weak/biased reporting of the Israeli/Palestinian conflict. Why hasn't CNN mentioned the fact that Israel has anti-missile defenses (that the USA sold them and that they are choosing not to deploy). There is no excuse for this conflict.

This has will be one of the proudest moments of my life to be able to witness the first African-American family take up residence in the White House. As an African-American, I never thought I'd ever witness such an event. I have experienced mistreatment simply because of the color of my skin, and to be able to witness such a historical moment affirms that God is real. We were created in his image and his commandment is to love. I know that He was involved in this entire process because of all the events that led to thistory being made. I have a dream, that one day we will judge one another by the contents of our character, and that we will all learn to tolorate each other and live as one.

At $5000/night, I'm sure Hay-Adams isn't the 'projects'. For the inevitable whiners, Blair House has traditionally been made available to the President-Elect 5 days before inauguration. Why is it that Obama deserves treatment better than every other PE? Oh, that's right, I forgot, He's the Second Coming.
