Sen. Harry Reid, pictured here with Pres. Bush in an April 2008 file photo, stood by his persistent criticism of the 43rd president in an interview Sunday.

WASHINGTON (CNN) – As the nation prepares for the inauguration of President-elect Barack Obama, a leading Democrat is not letting up in his criticism of President George W. Bush.

“I really do believe President Bush is the worst president we’ve ever had,” Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid said Sunday on NBC’s “Meet the Press.”

Reid pointed to Bush’s failed plan to privatize the Social Security program and also said Bush “has done his very best to destroy Medicare” in order support his assessment of Bush’s presidency.

Asked by David Gregory if he had any regrets about his persistent criticism of Bush, Reid responded, “I am who I am.”

“I think you just have to call things the way you see them.”

Harry Reid….another one!! Just wait. You think GWB was the worst. Obama doesn't have a chance with these clowns! A decent man, but I feel sorry for him. He really is a Republican but he wouldn't have been elected that way.

Palin Fan   January 4th, 2009 3:32 pm ET

Another prediction – Palin will be elected president and Bush ratings will be higher than Obama's in 2012.

Tom in TN   January 4th, 2009 3:32 pm ET

Doesn't the blame REALLY lie with the American people?

We all knew he was a liar and a traitor by 2004.

Succumbing to fear in the face of the terrorist tactics used by Bush and Co. during the 2004 election I believe DOES put the blame for the last four years of the doward spiral of America squarely in the lap of the people of America.

The same line of reasoning goes for Congressmen (like Reid) being reelected when they are known by the people to be worse than worthless.

We have met the enemy and he is US.

Grant E in MD   January 4th, 2009 3:31 pm ET

in my opinion, although he was not a very good president, G W Bush is NOT the worst president – he falls in at 3rd place behind Buchannan and Hoover. Harry Reid's sense of history is a bit distorted. But, then, he is to senate majority leadership as G W Bush is to presidency – also very bad. The Senate needs a Lyndon Johnson – very badly. And the House needs a Sam Rayburn. We have pipsqueeks running the congress. I wonder how Pres.Obama will get anything done.

Sounds like the pot calling the kettle black to me.

Ken Rigsby   January 4th, 2009 3:31 pm ET

In ten years, if Iraq stabilizes, I bet Bush will be seen as a great president. He spent his entire time in office trying to protect us after 9/11. Really, his entire presidency has been dominated by anti-terrorism, in one form or another.

Like his tactics or not, like the war or not… we haven't been attacked since. No one can say for sure if that's because of him or not, but I don't care about the "why", just the results.

AlwaysRight   January 4th, 2009 3:30 pm ET

If you want a President who'll negotiate with terrorists go find another country. Otherwise, get on your knees and thank your lucky stars that we have had a President who was not afraid to act. God bless President Bush.

How ungrateful we Americans have become that we can't stomach the reality of the world we live in. If you think Israel is the problem, I'd like for you to spend a few minutes in their shoes. How long do you think we'd tolerate Mexico firing rockets into Texas?

Jon   January 4th, 2009 3:29 pm ET

As ineffective as I think "go-along" Harry Reid may be, I certainly can't disagree with him regarding the presidency of George W. Bush. I just hope we, collectively as Americans, have learned a lesson here (probably not after all the votes McCain/Palin got), can dig ourselves out from this mess, and heal. It's a tall order, sadly.

Cameron   January 4th, 2009 3:28 pm ET

I can't believe some of you voted for him. Twice! What's that saying? Fool me once shame one me. Fool me twice… I think this was the quote he messed up on too. With the success of the Clinton presidency, the taxpayer SHOULD have paid for that indiscretion. There was plenty in the surplus and no wars to pay for. We should at least try GW and Cheney in civil court. The American taxpayer should go for every penny they've got. Like OJ. They got away with murder. But we can at least turn Crawford ranch into an eco-friendly wilderness preserve.

End Of An Error   January 4th, 2009 3:28 pm ET

Bush is not only the worst president ever, his actions probably are treasonous.

How many times did he stand in front of audiences and proclaim that he had absolute proof that Saddam Hussein was trying to acquire WMDs? What about his and Rice's comments about the smoking gun would be a nuclear bomb going off in the USA?

Bush and Cheney husbanded intelligence and only presented and acted on the evidence that supported invading Iraq. In the end, all of the reasons Bush gave to invade Iraq were proven false – and admitted as false by Bush and his administration. Over 4000 Americans are now dead, we killed a leader of a country, killed hundreds of thousands of Iraq's citizens, drained our treasury, and all for what? Nothing.

Bush needs to be investigated and held responsible. Everything from refusing to testify under oath to the 9/11 Commission to his statements to the American public in the push for war to the warrantless wiretaps and surveillance on the American public. Every lie needs to be documented and if what he did is found to have been unconstitutional, he must be held accountable.

Pam Holt Los Angeles, CA   January 4th, 2009 3:27 pm ET

I can't imagine a worst one! Bush/Cheney really do need to be held accountable for their crimes or a precedent will be set for all future presidents that they can get away with anything!

Change - Yeah Left!   January 4th, 2009 3:27 pm ET

The pot calling the kettle black. This has been the WORST Congress ever. And they decided to make things worse for the struggling President who could have done some good (maybe, if we were lucky) if Congress hadn't spit on him every chance they got.

Terry   January 4th, 2009 3:27 pm ET

Not that I disagree with the good Senator's statements, however, when such statements come from one of the worst elected officials of our time, it does not give the statement much credibility.

Trout slayer   January 4th, 2009 3:27 pm ET

When I clicked on this story, I thought it may be some in-depth story. Instead, its just one Senator (a Democrat, of course) saying Republican George Bush is the worst president ever. Why is this short blurb even on the webpage? Can't CNN do better.

tim   January 4th, 2009 3:27 pm ET

Reid is so old, he might remember Andrew Johnson. If he would do his research, he would find that Johnson was a terrible president.

Herbert Hoover/Calvin Coolridge were also not good.

mark   January 4th, 2009 3:27 pm ET

George Bush is not only the worst president the United States has ever had, he is the most destructive. He has ruined millions of peoples lives, and cost everyone (but himself & friends) trillions of dollars. He has taken the world back a hundred years with his stone age style of governing, and created more enemies of the US then any other president.

Ken in NC   January 4th, 2009 3:27 pm ET

Reid calling President Bush the worst ever is SPOT ON". While I will not argue that point, what is funny is that it is like "THE POT CALLING THE KETTLE BLACK".

If it wasn't for politicians then comedians would not have anything to talk about.

tom   January 4th, 2009 3:27 pm ET

That's okay liberals, keep piling on. Then ask us to support YOUR president.

Just remember why Bush was elected in the first place…the impeachment of one William Jefferson Clinton for perjury and obstruction of justice (in other words…not sex) and the manicial political partisianship that keep him from being removed. Bush was elected as a backlash, no different than Obama Hussein,

You liberals are as much to blame as Bush is for the last 8 years.

ANDROLOMA, Commerce City, Colorado   January 4th, 2009 3:26 pm ET

For prisoner torture, Mr. Bush certainly qualified.

Our fathers didn't even torture Nazis, for god's sake! What made islamic terrorists worse? This stain on America's honor will take generations to remove. The capitalists took this country into places it never should have gone. Greed took its place in our democracy and our homes, our factories and our cities. Greed and apathy will destroy this nation before militants. I'll trust a Muslim before I'll trust a CEO or any politician. THE BAILOUTS WERE WRONG! The politicians have indeed sold us out.

C W   January 4th, 2009 3:26 pm ET

I, too, am frustrated that the Dems didn't put up more of a resistence to the Bush & Company policies. The bully tactic of calling anyone who disagreed with Bush "unpatriotic," "terrorist-sympathizers," and the like, worked on the Democratic leadership like it did on so many others (including the media).

Time now for everyone to grow a backbone and truly put our country first. Enough of the fear-mongering, manipulation and lies.

I'm very much looking forward to a new era of integrity in government. The American people are calling for it, and after a very long 8 years, I think we have a President who not only knows how to build consensus and treat us like adults, but who also understands how important it is to serve his nation and not just his cronies.

charles moore   January 4th, 2009 3:26 pm ET

Harry, while I agree that Bush was probably one of the worst Presidents we've had, I must strongly disagree with you about his action HR6331. That bill was flawed badly, and has done great damage to the rural elderly population which depended upon PFFS. I know you think you helped the doctors, and maybe you did, but you sure hurt a lot of older people in the process.

Richard   January 4th, 2009 3:26 pm ET

What a news story CNN! A true headline!! The worst wimp Democrat Majority leader calls Bush the worst President. This is truely earth shattering. I was unsure of what Reid thought of him until you reported it. Try this news story…"Republicans hate Reid and Pelosi", "Pelosi doesn't like Cheny" "Cowboys say Redskins are worst team ever" WOW CNN you really came up with a scoop on that one!!

John in Tampa   January 4th, 2009 3:26 pm ET

To this point in history Reid is correct, nobody has ever been able to trash our country and our planet so broadly and so deeply. However, at this point in time I do not see the point of going on about this. Both Democrats and Republicans have their own internal problems, and even those are nothing next to the real issues they need to be working on together.

Joel   January 4th, 2009 3:25 pm ET

Bad President, Yes! Worst president? Not even close. Jimmy Carter is the worst in my book. Most of you guys blogging are too young to remember the 70s and it was way worse back then. You think the economy is the toilet? Not even close to Jimmy's America where he envisioned us as a smaller and less important country. Thank God Reagan came along. I hope Obama can do for America what Reagan did.

Joanna   January 4th, 2009 3:25 pm ET

First bush is the WORST that we have ever had. We get to see the manifestation of all is incompetent actions. Also Bush and Cheney were the one's that provided the info that congress got to make there decisions on for the Iraq occupation that broke our country and provided fodder for extremists. Yes the dems have been the majority the last two years but they did not have the 60 seats needed to block bush and the GOP ideologues. In most cases decisions need a 60 vote in favor. When people are polled, they are polled on the congress as a whole, not just one party.

trudi   January 4th, 2009 3:25 pm ET

come on! Harry Reid calling George Bush the worst is so inane.
Harry Reid is mediocre at best……………give Bush a break

L. Barry   January 4th, 2009 3:25 pm ET

There is no doubt in my mind that Bush will be considered one of the worst presidents the US has ever had. Leading up to 911 his administration ignored warnings of a terrorist attack against the US, after 911 numerous people and organizations told him Iraq was not involved in 911 and he went to war with them anyway while he should have kept our military fighting the terrorists in Afghanistan. His cronyisim led to the adminstrative failures in the aftermath of Katrina. The economic crisis that is impacting the world is the worst in most of our lifetimes. I believe the biggest problem with Bush is that he would never listen to those who did not agree with him and unfortunely he wasn't all that bright to begin with. He was only elected because of his name.

Keith Brown   January 4th, 2009 3:25 pm ET

All I can say to Senator Harry Reid, is the pot should not call the kettle black. The track record of the Senate and the House is pathetic and given the excellent response by President Bush to the 9/11 attack shows his ability to make good decisions and act responsibility. While the Senate stands and takes a stand for an instance, they back pedal so fast they trip over themselves changing positions. The House may have more members and shorter terms but they are running in reverse. I believe George Bush did his very best to represent the views and desires of those responsible Americans who work hard each day, I cannot say the same for Congress because I am not sure who they represent except special interest groups and themselves. Wake up Congress and smell the roses and coffee.

peter   January 4th, 2009 3:25 pm ET

In my opinion, Harry Reid is the worst senate majority leader that this country has ever had. His comments regarding president Bush were politically motivated and showed his lack of understanding of what the country needs.

Ash   January 4th, 2009 3:24 pm ET

Just get this man out of office now…he has screwed up everyone and everything in this country for the past 8 years…shame on the people who voted him for a second term because it was just as bad, if not worse than his first term. Let Obama be the man to change the world…

Brook Mantia   January 4th, 2009 3:23 pm ET

Anonymous   January 4th, 2009 3:23 pm ET

Given Reids perspective from Pelosi's anal cavity this wouldn't surprise anyone. History will prove the facts but greed and Clinton policy set the stage for the Socialist spiral we are on and Bush and all the King's horses can't correct the result. The first bailout and next with no ability to ever pay it back without either bankruptcy or Socialism are the only alternatives. We have greed, Bill, Hillary and their friends to thank for our headlong fall.

Fred   January 4th, 2009 3:23 pm ET

Oh yeah, and great work on the ticker line on your website CNN "Bush declared worst president". When you go to the article and read that this is according to the joke of senator named Harry Reid, you have to laugh. Do you have any real news stories to cover today CNN, aside from the phony Richardson stepping aside, due to being a criminal?

LifesaJourney   January 4th, 2009 3:23 pm ET

EVIL LIVES WHERE MADNESS RULES….This is the Bush/Cheney Legacy. I really do believe Bush is not all there mentally. I have honestly wondered if the years of abusing alcohol and drugs left him brain damaged. He certainly never acted like he know what was going on around him at all.

Bill   January 4th, 2009 3:23 pm ET

Harry's just trying to change the subject away from his newly disclosed contact with Illinois Gov. Blago over the senate appointment. He's got dirty hands.

Leigh   January 4th, 2009 3:22 pm ET

I didn't need to read this to know Bush was the worst president. Anyone stating this glaringly obvious fact is just being redundant.

Janice   January 4th, 2009 3:22 pm ET

Please someone, remind Senator Reid of his dismal work record! He's done nothing except show up most of the time. If Reid, (and a lot of others on the federal payroll) worked in private industry, he would have already been fired! Senators, Congressmen/women, vice-president and others are over paid and a lot of them were wealthy anyway.

Citizen   January 4th, 2009 3:22 pm ET

He is the worst thing happened to U.S. He should be brought to trial for war crimes.

michael flanagan   January 4th, 2009 3:22 pm ET

Reid has been a despicable liar and a fool for his entire term as Senate Majority Leader. There's nothing he won't say for political gain (e.g.,"This war is lost"), regardless of who ends up paying the price. He's a cranky old lady in a suit, and given his stunning level of ignorance and deceit in so many instances, there's utterly no reason to think he knows one blessed thing about which presidents were more accomplished than others, nor how to decide that question.

Johnson   January 4th, 2009 3:22 pm ET

I'll add my vote for Bush as the single worst president in US History.
And even as he is on his way out, he's still using his "powers" to make things worse.

May we never to be so dumb as to elect another Bush. That includes Jeb, and the rest of his whole family.

Chris   January 4th, 2009 3:22 pm ET

I do not think he was a great President and am not sorry to see him leave. But no one man could have done this all by himself. Why did Congress and the Sentate not do their jobs in overseeing the banks I believe as taxpayers we pay taxes for people to be employed in Government to over seen this not just complain and say we did not see it coming. We have the Commerce Department, the Treasury Department, SEC so where were all of these. Everyday all we see is waste in government, people caught not working etc. Where are the people making the big bucks and not seeing this. It is time for all of government to be accountable to the taxpayers. I do not think all these other countries we are telling what to do while we borrow money to be a socialist government by bailing our banks and auto suppliers make us look so powerful and so knowing. We have been fed how well off we are, by pictures of other countries but in truth there are countries as well off or even better and stronjger than us. Perhaps it is time for us to focus on what our government is doing and in truth the morality of the United States

Andrew   January 4th, 2009 3:21 pm ET

Reid had better options when answering the "Regrets" question:

1) That he did not start criticizing Bush earlier;
2) That Reid could not use some more appropriate words to describe the Bush presidency, as they would be bleeped out by censors;
3) That Bush still has 16 days to screw this country up even more.

JD   January 4th, 2009 3:19 pm ET

Funny. I remember Jimmy Carter being the worst President ever. Thanks to Carter's inept policies, the world was left with an Islamist terrorist-sponsoring Iran, 18% inflation and nearly 10% unemployment. But you'll never hear the left-leaning media or the Democrats mention those very real facts.

GWB is many things, but worst president in history isn't one of them.

Clark   January 4th, 2009 3:19 pm ET

Are we the only country that has a President who is mentally
retarded, stupid and painfully inept and incompetent? Or do

Tom   January 4th, 2009 3:19 pm ET

President Bush has been a good president for a very, very limited number of very rich and special interests groups, at the great expense of the rest of America.

George Bush's qualifications for "The Worst President Ever":
His acts, and inaction, on Iraq, Al-Qaeda, America's economy and the lack of regulation of America's financial institutions, Katrina, human rights violations and torture, the destruction of America's environment and natural resources, America's huge budget and trade deficits, blocking stem cell research and other medical progress, condoning Israel's aggressive conduct with its Arab neighbors, Alberto Gonzalez's actions within the U.S. Attorney's Office, etc., etc., etc.

Our country is in much worse shape and much less secure now than it was when George Bush took office.

He fully deserves the label "Worst President Ever".

J. Smith   January 4th, 2009 3:19 pm ET

Would any of you expect Reid to say anything positive about Bush? He never has so why should he start now?

Ron   January 4th, 2009 3:19 pm ET

Harry Reid, Nanci Pelosi, Dodd, Barney Frank, Maxine Waters, Al Franken, Barbara Boxer. This is your Congress of change?

Let me remind all of the mental defects who hate Bush and believe that Obama will restore the love of the world: When the ARABS (they were Muslim Arabs not Irish Catholics) attacked us on 9/11 – All of the Arabs and Muslims and Palestinians were dancing in the streets and celebrating. This was after 8 years of Clinton who was probably the most pro-Muslim president up to that point. My point is, I as an American do not want the love of the rest of the world, I want their fear and respect. The more feared and the more of a reputation of ruthlessness, the less likely they will attack. And as far as Harry Reid is concerned, this is the man who said the Senate (i.e him) has the right to determine who sits in the Senate. Talk about a pip squeak.

I am shocked. The most corrupt senate majority leader in history calls a president that has, dispite all the roadblocks thrown in his path by our beloved majority leader, kept this country safe. The worst president ever. Come on "Wild Bill" and Jimmy (I can't do anything right) Carter can't hold his jock. History will hold GW as one of the greatest ever. The press has built up this incoming "empty shirt" as some kind of hero. God help us! His adminstration hasn't even started yet and it's already more corrupt then Ws after eight years.

Bush is the worst president in recent history. There may have been some who were equally bad but that was over a century ago. Bush was deceitful, vicious, inept, vengeful, and a fool. Democrats like Reid have done everything they can to paint a false picture of just about everything Bush has done both good and bad. History will in fact judge Bush's tenure – not a bunch of liberals with an agenda. Bush will endure history long after Reid will be forgotten. Fortunatley, I believe Obama will expose Reid and all of you hate-speach liberals for what you are.

Sen Reid was asked a question and gave an honest answer – what was he supposed to do, lie because the election is over? P.S. As much as I think George Bush is a terrible President, How much can Harry Reid ride the tide of someone else's incompetence. He is supposedly the "Leader" of the Senate Democrats which is a group that shifts blame everywhere and rarely holds themselves accountable. Mr. Reid is not only what we do but also that which we do not do by which we are accountable!

D Jemming   January 4th, 2009 3:15 pm ET

Bush is the Poster Child for the "Peter Principle" Book!

The Peter Principle is the principle that "In a Hierarchy Every Employee Tends to Rise to His Level of Incompetence." The principle has real validity. It holds that in a hierarchy, members are promoted so long as they work competently. Sooner or later they are promoted to a position at which they are no longer competent (their "level of incompetence"), and there they remain. Peter's Corollary states that "in time, every post tends to be occupied by an employee who is incompetent to carry out his duties" and adds that "work is accomplished by those employees who have not yet reached their level of incompetence".

Charlize   January 4th, 2009 3:15 pm ET

Reid has a lot of guts saying this, while Bush is still in office. I wish more politicians (both dems and reps) also had the guts to state what they REALLY feel about INEPT AND HARMFUL politicians, like Bush and McCain (the latter, for his stupid VP choice, a big threat to the country, creating an incompetent monster which seems will never go away). More people should say it out loud: Bush and McCain are the most stupid and incompetent politicians in the history of the US. And they are both republicans (coincidence or systemic problem?).

Rolleyes   January 4th, 2009 3:14 pm ET

Republicans had the House and Senate for the past 6 of 8 years, so you people complaining about the legislative branch being just as bad need to look at the common thread between it and the executive.

Conservatism is a joke and lets our country stagnate instead of moving forward with new and progressive ideas. Bigotry and stubbornness is so antiquated, I just wish we didn't have to wait for all of the old guard to die to fix all of their problems.

Joe   January 4th, 2009 3:14 pm ET

Has he forgotten Jimmy Carter?

Chris Townsend   January 4th, 2009 3:14 pm ET

Ridiculous. I disagreed with President Bush on many things, but he provided inspiration for us after we were attacked on 9/11, he launched one of the most successful wars in history in Afghanistan, and despite repeated plans of fanatics around the world (150 plans of attacks in one year alone), we were never attacked after 9/11. Not even once. That is an amazing feat, and Bush will stand the test of time. He protected our country.

Buchanan may have been worse than Bush

He let the Southern States secede, supported ten-cent wages for laborers, hosted a corrupt administration and tried to convince Americans that slavery was something that could be lived with.

He also presided over the Financial Panic of 1857.

Well, okay, maybe a tie with Bush.

Jim   January 4th, 2009 3:13 pm ET

What a joke of a senator. Saying things like this while in office is incredible. Especially coming from someone who supports NATIONALIZED HEALTH CARE!! What a joke of a senator. As far as Bush's legacy, it's fine. I can't wait til we see how bad Barack blows this country up. We are safer now than we were under "willie", clearly.

Coming from a Democrat, that doesn't really mean anything!
No recent Democratic Presidents… especially the newly-elected one,

Harry Reid is an arrogant, self serving, man with no values or ethics. Bush seems to be the fall guy for everything wrong in the universe even as this Congress may well have been the most corrupt and incompetent in our history. Who is to blame for our problems…not GW or Harry, we all are for electing these bums.

Vince from CA   January 4th, 2009 3:12 pm ET

That's a hot one coming from an idot like Reid. Didn't he declare the war was lost in Iraq? Anyone who calls Bush the "worst" clearly forgot or never lived through the Carter years. I declare Reid the worst Majority Leader of all time.

Too bad Bush-and the "Dick" can't be charged with war crimes. They made sure they covered that base before they left office. In the south we have saying it goes like this, – "Don't let the screen door hit you in the a__ on the way out!"

Jan   January 4th, 2009 3:11 pm ET

As other people have said, it will take decades before history can truly judge if he is the worst ever. Is he the worst out of the presidents' terms that I lived through (Reagan, Bush 1, Clinton, Bush 2)? Most definitely. History goes back a little bit further than that though.

It would be an incredibly dumb comment for somebody who has to work with the president to make if Bush wasn't going to be out the door in a few weeks.

A Really Conservative Realist   January 4th, 2009 3:11 pm ET

To GOP no more….
To those of us that have mentally retarded children, your comments are tasteless, at least. You will not have the nerve to respond, I'm sure.

As a conservative, certainly Bush has been a dissappointment. But he would not be the worst president ever. His ideas on Social Security are great. But letting folks be responsible for their own decisions is unthinkable these days.

Karen, Chicago Illinois   January 4th, 2009 3:11 pm ET

At least he's not getting hummers while in office like some other low life Dem I won't mention!!!!

Bob   January 4th, 2009 3:10 pm ET

well, let me say this. I don't think President Bush is the worst president ever. Think about what he dealt with: 9-11, economic woes (twice)(2001-2002 and present day), Israel and Gaza, all of the natural disasters. I would venture to say he is not one of the best but he is not one of the worst. I understand your point of views but keep in mind the war in Iraq was not all of his fault. The congress voted on it and they kept pouring money into it.
I don't believe any of us have the right to criticize our Presidents because it is not our responsibility or right.

itsborken   January 4th, 2009 3:09 pm ET

What a surprise Reid says so (yet again). Why is this newsworthy? Oh yeah, liberal press.

Tracy   January 4th, 2009 3:09 pm ET

No harm in telling the truth here. GWB is the worst American President in the history of our country. I only wish more people stepped up to readily point out Reagan's atrocities as well.

John Marshall   January 4th, 2009 3:09 pm ET

Bush is certainly the worst president every. 9/11 occuring on his watch wasn't just bad luck… he had countless chances and direct warnings from intelligence sources to raise the warnings at the airports but he was too busy reallocating our resources to stop prostitution in New Orleans.

That said, Reid would be best to just keep his fool mouth shut and move on. 70% of Americans know Bush is the worst president ever while Obama is seeing record support. Now is not the time for leaders like Reid to create more division. Just look at the knee jerk reactions from all the Bush supporting morons (and you would have to be a complete moron to support Bush) because of Reid's attacks.

Obama is where he is at because he has some tact. We know how he feels about Bush but he is working to bring the country together.

keith in NC   January 4th, 2009 3:08 pm ET

Bill Clinton lies to a grand jury about sex in the oval office and Bush is the worst President?? I feel history will have a much different view.

Michele   January 4th, 2009 3:07 pm ET

Bush is the worst persident we have ever had, not just because of the actions he took (like getting rid of Habeas corpus, starting a false war, stealing an election, all that) but because of the things that he didn't do. For all of those people that say he stopped a second 911 from happening, where was he for the first? He got the brief title Terrorist To Attack Buildinds With PLANES!!!. What did he do? Nothing. As the bottom fell out of the housing market and deregulation caused the banking system to fail, where was he? What did he do? Nothing. He recieved several briefings on the state of the American economy, and still choose to ignore the facts and claim our ecomony was strong. When we look at the state of out country now and the events that lead up to it we have to ask our selves, where was our president? These things didn't just happen, they happened on his watch with him sitting on his hands doing nothing.

Bush will be judged the same as Herbert Hoover. Sure, Herbert didn't put the country into a war it didn't want to be in, but they both presided over the biggest financial failures of our economy and both look inept at trying to repair it.

It really doesn't matter if bush was the worst, all that needs to be known is that he truly wasn't what this country needed the past 8 years.

Perusing-Through   January 4th, 2009 3:07 pm ET

UNIMPRESSIVE SENATOR HARRY REID, , , UNIMPRESSIVE

Bush has been at the helm of this "Bush/Cheney/Rumsfeld/Rove National/International" debacle for 8-years. And now you boldly state what many of us knew by the end of Bush's first term, and most of us knew for sure after Katrina that he was the worst. Now you boldly say what we already know. Not impressive Mr. Reid. I have seen bolder leadership in 3-month old kittens.

P.S. – - – I am also not happy about Blagojevich's political moxie, but for now allow Burris to take the Senate seat so it won't be another distraction along with the Bill Richardson nomination withdrawal. With all the disasters the "Obama-Biden-Clinton-Gates" will find in their inbox from Bush/Cheney/Rumsfeld/Rove administration, the Burris thing is a non-starter.

KB   January 4th, 2009 3:07 pm ET

Bush saved the country after 9-11 (Imagine what would have happened if Al "the inventor of global warming and the internet" Gore would have been president… very scary. I prospered until the democrats took over both houses of congress. The democrats led by Reid, Pelosi, Frank, Dodd and Schumer blocked any attempt to clean up the Freddie and Fannie mess over the past 7-8 years. This current financial mess is the direct result of Clinton and the democrat's FAILED Social experiment to give financing to people who could not afford it. REID is a joke and the worse Majority Leader in history.

Ambrose Smith, Borrego Springs, California   January 4th, 2009 3:07 pm ET

Funny when people bringup that congress has a lower approval than Bush—-yet "forget" to mention that 49% of congress is GOP. They are the ones who make congress look bad by dragging things down and agreeing with Bush's veto pen.

Throw those GOP bums out and congress and Obama can get rolling!

Harry, Look in the mirror, what do you see, the worst majority leader of the senate we have ever had. Harry, you are entitled to your opinion, I don't much like Bush either but Bill Clinton is right up there with the worst we have ever had.

elmo the demo   January 4th, 2009 3:06 pm ET

SMS, you may have the most ludicrous post on here. 9/11 happened less than 8 months after Bush took office. The preparations by the terrorist scum who did this happened long before on Clinton's watch. Remember him? Remember the USS Cole, who was president then? Lied under oath, lied to the American people, impeached and should have been removed from office and jailed. His glad handing BS cost the US dearly but too many people (you're probably one of them) close their eyes and ears and pretend all the bad that he did never happened. Sure Bush is a boob and a terrible mistake but so was Clinton. I have no doubt that Billy Bob will get his one day but watch how much more harm he can do now that Bilary is going to be the next Secretary of State. I only pray that people like you one day wise up.

vmhatton   January 4th, 2009 3:05 pm ET

No doubt bush is the worst president we could of had for the past 8 years and, I believe, will go down in history as one of the worst ever…for so many reasons. However, Reid is no shining star himself! We need decent people to want to be involved in government service before we can expect decent leaders.

We all know that President Bush was not a very good president. But it sure seemd to me that CNN does everything it can to run him down.Last week when Fox News had a story about all the times Bush visited the soldiers families when the returned they from Iraq. How many times he had visited the wounded soldiers at Walter Reed. Cnn didnt run the story. This web sites does everything it can to paint the republicans in a bad light. They have a littel over two weeks and then watch how they shut up about all the crap Obama pulls. Did CNN every run a story aboout how illegal all of his campagin contributions were or where they come from?

Chris W, Tampa   January 4th, 2009 3:04 pm ET

Bush should have been put in jail instead of re-elected.
Barack Obama has got to do a better job or this country is through with.
If youre still a Republican after the last 8 years, it's almost at the point where the rest of us have a duty to round you people up and put you in "re-education camps" or something! I say this because despite the global disaster the W admin has been- these elephants wanted to scale up the clown count and PUT PALIN IN THE WHITE HOUSE since we know McCancer would've lasted a few months. When you take away all the little laughs and sighs it's actually really really scary to think about that scenario, it makes Bush seem sane.

Steph I.   January 4th, 2009 3:04 pm ET

Well well well "worst ever" is about right. Look in our lifetime we have seen the best the craziest and the worst. The corrupt midget did what he did to get his fathers' approval and forgot that he is the highest servant in the land to the people of this great country.
yeah he will have the blood of many on his hand and it will take a lot of Excedrin PM for him to get over the political hangover from his Foreign Policy to his "Domestic Policy" .
I am not fooled at all and I know even the most staunchest of the Republican supporters have to be glad that this little man is gone.
Besides what one single man in Iraq did to little man ; Throwing his shoes, is felt all over the world.. little man used the planet as his toilet and well some people don't like him and there is no law that says you have to respect him or praise him;

Pog Mahon   January 4th, 2009 3:03 pm ET

September 11th happened well into the Bush/Cheney Presidency, and they were warned in a "White House Briefing" a month before the attack in early August. He refused to acknoweldge the threat, let alone do anything about it. Now the Bushies want us to forget the first year and say they kept us safe for the seven years after September 11th, forget this major failure and all the many that followed during the remainder of his two terms?!
What about all the increased terrorist attacks around the world – Bush/Cheney would like us to think the rest of the world doesn't matter!
Bush's one quote that sums up his Presidency -
"Fool me once …………..ah …… ah ……. we can't get fooled again."
When wasn't he wrong?

Screw the critics! I've never felt safer as I have the last 8 years. Bush has done everything in his power to proctect the American people. There are so many fanatics out there that would love to see the USA and democracy fail. Bush is a good man and a man with conviction that has guided this country through the worst attack on our soil in history. I can safely say that Clinton, Obama, Pelosi and Reid would not have been able to stand with conviction and resolve against the terrorists that want to bring harm to our people (who happen to be American and non-American) and to our country. As far as Bush being the "cause" of thousands of deaths"…..he certainly doesn't stand on that platform alone! However, I would NOT

Senator Reid? The one Senator most responsible for the housing crisis and the subsequent melt-down of the American, and by extension, global economy.

This is a distraction tactic, too many people looking at Reid, the majority leader, and wondering how he could not see this mess coming.

Worst Senator, ever. By a mile.

Jerry from Illinois   January 4th, 2009 3:00 pm ET

Baloney. Most of the people who think President George W. Bush is the worst president ever couldn't even name ten former presidents if they tried, especially former presidents who served prior to Franklin Roosevelt.

People of Nevada cannot stand Harry Reid. He is a complete and utter JERK. He should be removed from congress all together. Unfortunately the elite control Washington not the real people.
The democrats wanted power so badly that they have created the hatred towards Bush, Reid and the democrats are the ones who have diminished the office of the Presidency. They speak about the president like he's nothing not taking into account their words are heard around the world. Its no wonder the world thinks it can say whatever it wants about the US. All our politicians have made our country look like a joke. The only thing the policians care about are themselves and the elite. Reid is the biggest WUSS I have ever seen, a guy who thinks HE will tell the American People whats good for us instead of listening to the people. They're all power crazy with our money. Bush isnt the brightest light bulb, but lets all realize something. THE PRESIDENT IS A PUPPET CONTROLLED BY OTHERS ANYHOW. GET A CLUE FOLKS. WAKE UP.

What does that make you? You have not hesitated to "throw money" to your rich buddies on Wall Street and elsewhere. You have no concern on the impact this is doing to American Taxpayers! flyfhsak   January 4th, 2009 2:59 pm ET

I am not that fond of Bush and I voted for him – twice ! I have seem comments about how O Bama is going to bring PEACE to the Middle East. How bout we just stay out of the Middle East all-together and let the Middle East work out their own problems. Why does the US always have to be the mediator in this pretentious issue when the vast majority of the Arab world doesn't even want our help in the first place. How bout we turn over a new leaf – I know it will be hard, but lets ( the US ) just stay out of every other country's business and worry about our own domestic problems here at home. Look at Iraq for example. We have tried so hard to bring stability and peace ( and our form of democracy ) to that country and after all that effort I firmly believe that regardless if it's a year from now or god forbid 10 years from now the last US soldier out of there is gonna be dodging bullets. We just can't be worlds traffic cop anymore. There's nothin in it for us to keep doing this. That's my take. Reid's no saint but he's partly right about George Bush. Let's see what Obama can do with our broken down mess of an economy. He sure can't make it any worse than it already is. I'm very disappointed in the Bush presidency sorry to say.

He is a crook, a thief (real estate and other delaings, the successful ones and the ones he bungled) and there have been comments about his ties to organized crime. Talk about the pot calling the kettle black. I can't wait for the day that Harry boy gets to do the perp walk for the cameras. That will be a day to celebrate.

Jason Suniga   January 4th, 2009 2:58 pm ET

I think President Bush did the best he can under the circumstances that happened during this time in history. He stood by his word always 100% and always accepted responsibility for his action; what else do you expect in a honorable man. Not all decisions were popular but the job he had was not to please everyone but to lead a country. As a former U.S. Marine that served seven years during his term I am glad to have had him as my Commander and Chief. I served and fought honorably and now I got a high position job in the civilian sector. He is a person that I feel shows true leadership and commitment and is not afraid to speak what he feels is right.

Bush has done his best to destroy America. The sooner he is gone the better.

SPS   January 4th, 2009 2:58 pm ET

How quickly and conveniently Democrats forget President Jimmy Carter! Democrats complain about Republicans dividing the country, isn't this type of attitude the cause of division? It feels like Liberals, ala Sentaor Reid, only support and love the US when a Democrat is in command. Even though I didn't vote for President-elect Obama and don't really support his agenda, he is my President and my hope is for him to be successful. If he is successful we are all successful. Isn't that what America should be about? This type of speech from a career politician should be laughed at and not applauded.

Dave in Chicago   January 4th, 2009 2:58 pm ET

Well said.. I agree completely. While I am not a fan of Bush, it's too early to completely judge just how big/bad the ripples are in the American pond.

I agree with senator Reid, he is the worst president weve ever had. The history books will not be kind at all to JR.

James   January 4th, 2009 2:56 pm ET

Amazing how those who serve as senators or congress men/women want to continue expressing how terrible President Bush is and soon to be was. I think more people need to look at there elected officials and ask the important questions that mean most. Research and find out if they really did anything while serving as your representative. You will be amazed that they probably have done very little.

George   January 4th, 2009 2:54 pm ET

Coming from the Senate Majority leader of the worst congress that we have ever had this is quite a statement. A do nothing congress does not help the government in any way and to try to distract from Reid's leadership by badmouthing the Administration and in particulr Bush really shows a total lack of leadership.

I'm only sorry this declaration wasn't made during his FIRST term in office. We might have been spared the debacles he perpetrated during his SECOND term. To this day I'm still flabbergasted that the Republican Sheep movement was able to sock Bush in for another term. I think those who finally woke up voted for Obama out of conscience.

Fast Eddie   January 4th, 2009 2:53 pm ET

Sorry folks, but the worst president is that SCUM BAG with the
initals of WJC! He preferred getting a BJ from a 18 year old intern
then running the country. By the way who makes the laws in this
country? I was always taught it is congress. The president can
then sign them and they become law or he can veto them!! One
more thing about Harry Reid look up the word "A—–E" in the
dictionary and you will see his picture along with WJC. Look up the
word "FLAMING A—–E in the same dictionary and you will see WJC
and Harry Reid's pictures TWICE!!!

oh yea..that thing the lady said about he loves killing arabs and muslims or whatever, isn't very fair either. the reason we went to iraq is to take saddam out of power. the u.s.a is part of the un and was one of the only countries that would be willing enough to take the heat for getting saddam out. the economy was strong enough for that at the time, along with australias, and englands. does everyone forget that it wasnt just the u.s. over there.
and it makes me mad when people say we were over there for oil, if we were there for oil wouldn't it make the gas cheaper if we were there taking all that rich oil? yes it would, did it? no, we were there to free the oppressed.

we did a good thing over there. if only people living in the regular civilian world could see the same news the military gets. we get the truth of what's going on. sure really bad things happen over there but many people do not realize how any schools we have built and how much medical aid we have given to people over there. we shoot somebody and wound them, we give them care once battle is over and try to help them. it isn't what people think this war has been. it has done more good than bad on morale standards, and we are creating a strong ally in the middle east for the future. one country at a time makes all the differnce. mile by mile and it's to hard but inch by inch and it's a cinch.

mr reid ought to pay a little more attention to his own standing… near as i can tell he is not up for any popularity awards himself….

Tig   January 4th, 2009 2:50 pm ET

I enjoy reading the comments of people that obviously can't name a president beyond Carter. Bush has been blamed for everything from external terrorist attacks to the weather itself. He's not the best president we've had, by far, and the fact that he's a poor speaker and hot-tempered just fuels the fires of disapproval. He is a lot better than people want to give him credit for, however, because the last eight years has seen a rise in a popular trend of Americans verbally hating America. He's our president, therefore he's our country. I'll say the same when your precious Jesus F. Kennedy…oh wait, I mean Obama…takes the stand. I don't like him, but he is an American symbol, and to publicly make the statements that ours is a horrible president does severe damage to our country as a whole. Reid and Pelosi both should be tried for treason and sedition for their glory-hounding and grandstanding at the sake of American integrity. You people got what you wanted and you put an inexperienced "everyman" into the oval office, so for once will you please show some dignity and integrity as an American and shut the hell up?

Carl Justus   January 4th, 2009 2:49 pm ET

I totally agree, I do not think there has been another president that has mislead and lied to the American even within ten percent of this failed president.
The sad part about it is, I do not think he has even thought about the damage he has done. He acted within his own world and forgot about the people of this country. He apparently never even considered the consequences of his actions. It was self indulgence to highest degree of self importance, or arrogrance, and of stupidity.

Brett   January 4th, 2009 2:49 pm ET

Think Twice…. Alike Rice stated that we should thanks BUSH from what he done for the country. Bush did protect every american as he did in past 8 years. That's included 9/11 and clinton caused america down with money issue in 1998, then Bush helped to get little things better (as normal for new president) before 9-11….but, he did not let everything go DOWN!!! we should thanks him for that!

So, Therefore, Senate's rate is VERY lowest approve than Bush… I dont trust Reid as alway… he will lose.

Plus, Obama gave the hints that he does not like Reid from he did to floor of the senates.

ken   January 4th, 2009 2:48 pm ET

How does that make you feel Mr. Reid? You got fooled by the worst President ever. You also followed him down the path of the War in Iraq and the biggest government bailout in history. What does that make you?

Matt in VA   January 4th, 2009 2:48 pm ET

Andrea, where were you during the Carter years? I know you were alive but obviously not very alert. Do you not remember the long gas lines, the 21% mortgage interest rates, the high unemployment? What selective memories you all have. Just 24 months ago the DOW was at 14000 yet the Bush admin never got one ounce of credit. Oil prices jump, Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac showed how corrupt they are (BTW under Democrat leadership both internally and through support by the likes of Chris Dodd (D) and Barnie Frank (D)) and all of the blame is laid on Bush. Oil prices have dropped but we are still bailing out the financial and manufacturing entities all due to policies of the Dems. How did the Levin bros let the car industry fail in their home state. Until you blame Bush first people open your eyes and minds we are doomed to the same failures.

Gary   January 4th, 2009 2:48 pm ET

Bush the worst President? Time will tell; we'll see. I will say that there is a lack of statesmen among USA politicians. Reid and his ilk are partisan to a fault. As Senate majority leader he is a disappointment himself. Reid types trash the opposition automatically as a tactic. Too many politicians claim to be perfect in all things while claiming the other side are always idiots, incompetent, and even evil. Our leaders need to think of America first, not party affiliation first. Both sides of the isle have things to contribute. We are better served by a blend of ideas, not Democrat or Republican dogma. But the atmosphere is made so toxic by remarks like Senator Reid that we have become polarized.

Tim   January 4th, 2009 2:47 pm ET

How can anyone say he is the worst president we have ever had? He hasn't even left office yet! We haven't had a chance to see how all of his policies and decisions will pan out. Evaluate his presidency in 10 or 15 years, I am sure we will look at things differently then. The Iraq war is still unpopular amongst most Americans. We will see if peoples perception of the war changes in a few years. All in all, it is too early to say that Bush was the worst president ever.

arc, Lugano CH   January 4th, 2009 2:47 pm ET

Criminal January 4th, 2009 1:34 pm ET
Bush is worst than the "worst President we've ever had;" he's an international criminal who should be prosecuted and imprisoned. Let's see if Reid has the spine to start the process.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
I agree with you, but sadly, Bush, Cheney, Wolfowitz, Rice and co. will never stand trial for their crimes; although much of the world is waiting for justice to be served. I am an American, but I can acknowledge what the current Republican government of my country has done abroad – Abu Ghraib is only one example.
Marilyn Gjerdrum   January 4th, 2009 2:47 pm ET
George Bush is the worst president we have ever had. However, Harry Reid is the most ineffectual blowhard in the Senate. He is an old maid in pants, always quick to point the finger, and equally adept at backing down under pressure. If the senate had any sense, they would chose a leader with some backbone and conscience, such as Byron Dorgan, Chris Dodd, or Barbara Boxer.
George W. Bush will be seen as the worst president in American history. Just looking at the books that have already been written, and the man hasn't left office yet, speaks volumes (I can only imagine the volumes that are published in the next several years). But Senator Reid didn't need to say those things. It's akin to saying that the Detroit Lions were an awful team this year. It's obvious and doesn't need to be repeated again.
Arne from London   January 4th, 2009 2:46 pm ET
Ghee Wizz ! Took you Americans a full 8 years to figures that out !
American citizen   January 4th, 2009 2:46 pm ET
I would not go that far to say that President Bush has not been a good
leader. You must understand, he has protected our government and we have not had any more attacks in the USA since he has been in office. Do not blame him for the deaths in our military as the military men and women know when they go in, there may be a chance they will go to war and may never come home. That is the chance of any military person. Look at any war people do not make it out sometimes. So get a grip on understanding war and military. By the way for your record i have family that are military as well.
Arron   January 4th, 2009 2:45 pm ET
Saying Bush is the worst president in history is simply stating the obvious. One good thing about Bush, it exposed how morally bankrupt and dangerous the policies of conservatives really are. Perhaps now we can banish this discredited ideology to the scrap heap of history.
Ray   January 4th, 2009 2:45 pm ET
I disagree. Worst President? Most imcompent, in the current age. Jimmy Carter. Biggest Crook by far. Lyndon Johnson. Bush in heads and sholders above those two.
Bush did the best he could to protect the American people..history will make his legacy sound. You have to consider the source with Reid. We are really giving up the best and finest first lady ever in our history.Congress needs to start doing something to earn all that money they give themselves!
gary fortier   January 4th, 2009 2:44 pm ET
Reid has no idea what's going on in this world. He is totally out of it -just like the rest of the politicians and will, if he uses what litttle brain he has, discover shortly that the worst is yet to come. And he is part of it. GW is much better than BC ever was, history will prove it.
dan   January 4th, 2009 2:44 pm ET
If President Bush could have run for a 3rd term, I would have supported him enthusiastically. He did exactly what the country wanted after 9-11, and was cheered for it. He also won re-election handily. But, as always, Americans are fickle in their convictions and above all, they are short on memory. Had Romney been the nominee of the Republicans, as he should have been, the Bush White House would be handing the baton to him now.
Mike   January 4th, 2009 2:44 pm ET
Aaron from Oho: You're wrong. It doesn't take decades to determine if a president's legacy is good or bad in all cases. Safe to say, from shredding the constitution to involving the country in two hugely unpopular wars to being in charge as the Second Great Depression begins, Bush and company have been utter failures. It doesn't take decades and a Ph.D. to recognize that level of failure.
Rodger Malphan   January 4th, 2009 2:42 pm ET
Harry Reid is a disgrace to the Senate—which really contains many deplorable human beings (Republican and Democrat). His criticism, while perhaps partly true but he is no better. Reid's decision-making as majority leader puts him right up there with the president.
Bob   January 4th, 2009 2:42 pm ET
It is so amazing to watch the hatred on both sides. Yes, Bush is not one of the best Presidents and that is true. However, it is also true that the controlling Democrats for the past couple of years are no better. They did nothing to stop the war. Did nothing to curtail the Bush Administration. Just goosed stepped like every other politician. I think coming out and badmouthing another politician reeks of trying to cover up your own incompetence.
BTW…….My vote for the worst President falls with Jimmy Carter. This man damaged this country tremendously and enjoyed every minute of it. Not a Bush fan but I am confident that he hates what has happened to the USA.
Sorry, Bush does not stand for Christianity. Next to Mother Theresa, he's only 10% Christian and 90% politician. His legacy, in grand schemes of the future, is to make America WEAK and let EU take the future. There is absolutely no mentioning of a STRONG modernized country like America, heading into Armageddon. As for Obama, he is a glimpse of what the Anti Christ will be like. Obama exists, I'm sure, to clean things up and prepare the way for the Anti Christ. I cant hate Bush. He's preparing the way for Armageddon and it takes a MAN like him to do it.
Give 'em hell, Harry! I'm 49 y/o and these past 8 years have been the most abjectly miserable of my life; corresponding with the ascent of the only court-appointed president in the history of the democracy, who stole the election again 4 years later. Bush-Cheney-Rove's incompetence is only exceeded by their evil natures. Space limitations prevent describing the infinite ways their incompetence has been destructive to America.
The Iraqi war isn't about oil, folks, it's about lining Haliburton's pockets. Why has Bin Laden not been apprehended? His execution of the Iraqi war has been disastrous, to say nothing about his lying to Congress and the American people to justify invading a sovereign nation. By the way, the shrub's own commission determined Saddam was not involved in 9/11.
The shrub is an abject failure, i.e. the absolute worst excuse for a 'leader' the democracy has ever known. I can't even express the joy/relief knowing that little incompetent yahoo cowboy is going back to Texas. Good Riddance!
How do you think the US would respond? Should we listen to the UN when they say to exercise restraint? Should we hold off on action in the hopes that Cuba would stop? Lets expand it beyond Cuba. Name me one country that you would allow to act as a belligerent toward the US without our taking retaliatory response.
And what has Hamas' response been? Have they said they would stop the rockets? No, they have only said that they will kill all the Israelis that cross into Gaza. About the same thing as Saddam saying it would be the mother of all battles.
Personally, I think Israel should wipe the SOBs off the face of the earth. It might just be that this is the time and place for it to happen.
Bush is stupid and his wife may have canckles but that Jenna has a nice tush
Greg, NH   January 4th, 2009 2:28 pm ET
I believe George Bush has been one of the best presidents we ever had. There was no 9/11 in any of the other presidents' term. Harry Reid is the worst politician and the senator we ever had. He has been campaigning that Iraq war is lost. I am sure American people will teach him lesson in the coming election.
Rex from TX   January 4th, 2009 2:28 pm ET
Bush placed politics over science and religion over politics. Thank you, God, for getting rid of Bush!
MA   January 4th, 2009 2:28 pm ET
I think the "gang of 2 1/2″ — Bush, Cheney and Rumsfeld, should be tried for war crimes.
brian   January 4th, 2009 2:27 pm ET
Well, D'uh.
Dan   January 4th, 2009 2:25 pm ET
Stupid thing to say when your coming guy has no experience and has done nothing and is starting with bad economy and very complicated world situation, and is aguy that tries to please all!
Wait a bit before you conclude the Bush period (that was less than ideal, but why the need to such an extreme statement at this point.. campaign is over and Obama did not start!)
casper   January 4th, 2009 2:25 pm ET
i don't know if he would be the worst, but i do believe america is at an all time low, it's a sad time.
Clinton Supporter   January 4th, 2009 2:24 pm ET
So I see Tubby had to withdraw. Isn't that a shame. What goes around comes around. I'm sure Bill Clinton is having a good laugh, I certainly hope so. I know I am!
Turns out Richardson preferred Barack and his sleazy Illinois friends to Hillary Clinton. And how right he was to "stick with his own kind." Definitely not Hillary's type at all.
There will be overwhelming silence from the Clinton camp, but personally, I'm hoping Carville says something so I can have another good laugh. He did hint that we were not through with scandals among the Democratic "leadership."
Now I wish someone would go after Howard Dean. I guess I'll have to be satisfied with the Blagojevich nonsense for the moment. Sooner or later, the ways in which Barack himself got dirty hands will come out, too.
I'm patient. I can wait.
Dave   January 4th, 2009 2:24 pm ET
Isn't Harry the guy who declared "the (Iraq) war is lost" ….
Nuff said….
And how many terrorist attacks have we had in the last 7 years under Bush??   January 4th, 2009 2:23 pm ET
None. Zero. Zilch.
But now Obama comes along and I ask: How will Obama improve on Bush's 100% terrorist free years—Answer: He can't.
change in America   January 4th, 2009 2:21 pm ET
President is the worst president we ever had I know it going to be celebration in the street when he gone.
Bush the worst person in the world
Hawaii   January 4th, 2009 2:21 pm ET
Of course Bush is the worst president ever: 4000+ Americans dead, he can't give speeches, he uses the war on terror as a ploy to scare Americans (look what happened to the Muslim family on AirTran a few days ago!), he "stays the course" even when he admits he was wrong, a president that let gas prices get up to $4.50 in Hawaii! He's a guy that cannot work with a Democratic congress, either, thinking that conservatism is always right. He's drained the 401Ks and investment accounts that my parents and millions of others like them have been working up for retirement.
In an essay that I wrote for a macro economics course a few years ago, I was all for the republican model. Tax cuts so the money coming back to consumers could be spent to jump start a sluggish economy. Boy did I get my head examined!
I'm 29 years old – the only democrat in office during that time was Clinton (I was a baby when Carter was in office). We had Reagan, Bush I, and Bush II – looking at history, these republicans basically screwed America for a long time to come. Good luck Mr. Bush, and good riddance.
dave   January 4th, 2009 2:19 pm ET
umm. jimmy carter, anyone? nevermind. facts just cloud things.
Pat F   January 4th, 2009 2:18 pm ET
Harry Reid is undoubtedly the worst Senate majority leader in history, so he is an expert at historical worsts. Reid couldn't lead his way out of a wet paper bag with a machete.
Ken   January 4th, 2009 2:18 pm ET
Hilarious!! Reid is the biggest loser in the Senate and he is still talking trash! The democrat led Congress has an approval rating worse than the president, but I guess that escapes CNN's attention.
Hey, where's the story on Richardson withdrawing his big for Sec. of Commerce because he's being investigated by a grand jury.
Honest and Open government…..YEA RIGHT!! LOL!!!!!
I only hope we can undo the damage done by these democratic buffoons in 2012. God help us!!
Dave, Central Illinois   January 4th, 2009 2:16 pm ET
Im still laughing. Reid and Pelosi are the most pathetic excuses for majority leaders this country has seen. They both put politics above country.
Oh, "Proud American", why don't you pull your head out of your a$$ and your tail from between your legs and use your real name. Your stupid remarks might have a little nore weight that way.
Anonymous   January 4th, 2009 2:14 pm ET
Harry Ried is just saying what many of us feel. W stands for Worstest. W is going to make history alright — by leading the most clueless and out of touch administration in modern history. It is going to take decades to work our way out of his fumbling mis-management. W, don't let the door hit you on the way out.
Don't tread on me   January 4th, 2009 2:14 pm ET
Thankfully, there are term limits in the presidency.
ULTIMATELY, TERM LIMITS should be enforced in every elected or politically appointed position with a moratorium on the number of positions one person may hold in a lifetime.
tom   January 4th, 2009 2:12 pm ET
bush i not only worst president in history he is one of teh worst leaders of any nation in history. that said god bless obama and lets pray he can repair the demonic mess bush made.
AJ   January 4th, 2009 2:12 pm ET
I believe President Bush is the person who can not think and can not feel. These evidently get reflected in his policies and personality. I can not blame him as this the person who he is. I guess he is trying his best.
Phillip Bunn   January 4th, 2009 2:11 pm ET
He sure is! And Sarah Palin would have been the next! Go home FOOLS!
Joel Parkes   January 4th, 2009 2:11 pm ET
Any person who has looked into American history to any degree would be hard pressed to find a worse example of a president. Try to think of the founding fathers of America walking around in Philadelphia in the 1770's discussing the rights of the individual, the necessity of a secular state, the nature of the authority of sovereignty and the recognition of the rule of law entrenched in any binding document. Got that? Now think of Bush.
Anonymous   January 4th, 2009 2:08 pm ET
I am; not a particular fan of Reid, but we finally can agree on something….Bush – and his cronies – have been a disgrace.
chuck   January 4th, 2009 2:07 pm ET
Pretty much what you would expect a dem to say. Reid and Pelosi vowed from the start to sink Bush and they did. Their partisan attacks hurt everyone of us while they just got richer and more prowerful.
mike   January 4th, 2009 2:06 pm ET
A man with a 9% approval rating should keep his mouth shut.
Aaron, Chicago   January 4th, 2009 2:06 pm ET
He's right, bottomline. Bush is a failure in every way possible. He's destroyed everything he's ever been at the helm of. This isn't a party vs. party issue either. It says a lot when Republicans can't defend him and people are already looking at Obama on everything.
Drew Williams   January 4th, 2009 2:05 pm ET
Obama need not make any statement on Israel until he is President, and when he does, it need not be in unequivical support. Like any powerful nation, Israel is capable of acting in proportions that far outweigh the original crime. The Jews were victims of the very "for-everyone-you kill-we-kill-ten-of-yours" philosophy they're now employing, for God's sake. Unquestioning support for Israel no matter how they egregiously they choose to defend themselves from Hamas aggression will serve us not at all. We owe the Israelis no more than we owe any democratic ally.
david goldman   January 4th, 2009 2:05 pm ET
Bush was defiantly the wost president we have ever had. I hope that in the years to come he will be prosecuted for his crimes agents the world.
There has never been a successful occupation such as the Israelis have now. It will end in blood on both sides and a return to the status quot. The only way for the Israeli's to live in peace is to flee the middle east as they should have years ago.
schneider.360   January 4th, 2009 2:04 pm ET
Puddytat: of all the stupid comments i've ever read on here that may be the worst. first of all, how is obama racist? he ran on the fact that this country has moved beyond racism. it's really sad that such a critical moment in the progress of this country's acceptance of each other can be spun into actually the exact opposite of what is happening. racism is only still around because of people like you.
secondly, the only reason we're even still fighting in the middle east is because of bush. if obama were in charge 6 years ago we wouldve taken care of our business in Afghanistan and thousands of american lives would have been spared. yes, obama is going to bring us into war again in the middle east, but george w. bush is to thank for that.
CLINTON   January 4th, 2009 2:04 pm ET
Puddytat January 4th, 2009 1:44 pm ET
He may go down as the worst President … Obama will go down as the RACIST one that sent Black kids to College and White kids to war.
WHAT PUDDYTAT? THIS IS NOT TRUE BECAUSE IT HASN'T HAPPENED, I'M NOT EXACTLY DEFENDING HIM BUT MAYBE THIS TIME HE WILL SEND THE CORRECT BALANCE TO THE MILITARY, AS FAR AS I KNOW OBAMA IS ENDING THE IRAQI MISERABLE MESS BUSH LEFT (I HOPE…)
Salt & Pepper   January 4th, 2009 2:03 pm ET
Looking back at the history of all the presidents, yes, I to feel this will be a correct statement. He has not did much to further the US let alone our standing around the world. Obama has a BIG job of doing what Bush set out to do and that is to truly "be a uniter".
Arcanist   January 4th, 2009 2:03 pm ET
ok, comparing an inept senator, to a president that did everything in his power to turn the U.S. into some corporate theocracy isn't exactly fair.
rush Joy   January 4th, 2009 2:03 pm ET
He is a sad thing that happened to the US. He loves wars and killing Arabs and Muslims. I think he enjoys that…
I hope Obama will come in and stands by his promise not to let lobbyist certainly the Jewish lobbyist like AIPAC interfere with his plan on bringing peace to the middle east and the wold. The world will be better.
La Chatte   January 4th, 2009 2:02 pm ET
Well, well! Isn't that just the pot calling the kettle black? Harry Reid, scumball majority leader, disses scumball president. Let's throw Pelosi on the pile and run them all over with a Hummer.
Harry Reid   January 4th, 2009 2:02 pm ET
I wonder who is the worst senator we've ever had.
Aaron from Ohio   January 4th, 2009 1:59 pm ET
I think it will take decades to actually determine if Bush is really the worst or even one of the worst presidents. A president is judged by his actons and the consequences down the road resulting from his actions. If Iraq stabilizes and heads down the path toward democracy, history will have a much different take on his presidency than we do now. It is possible that he will be credited for making the election of Barak Obama even possible. Two years ago there were very few people who believed that 2008 would see us elect a black man as president. It isn't much of a stretch to argue that it was the very failures of the Bush presidency that made America take a chance on a different path. If that path turns out to be successful, historians could very well claim that there could not have been an Obama without there having been a Bush. His every failure as a president could be seen as a necessary prelude in making this year a turning point in our history.
Mike in Seattle   January 4th, 2009 1:57 pm ET
I agree most wholeheartedly! What this man and his cohorts have done in so many ways to this nation will take years and years to repair. I cannot believe that there are still American citizens who are as oblivious as he as to the harm he has done. I still read of supporters who indicate that he is a "God-fearing" man, that his personality traits have caused the issues. Well, the Islamic terrorists are "Allah fearing". Does that give them an excuse? His personality traits have caused the issues…well, if you consider arrogance, stupidity, inability to speak coherently (even when documentation is provided) and a mind set put in place by Cheney, Rumsfeld and the other anti-Constitution idiots as personality traits, I'd have to agree. Good riddance!!!!! Hopefully, this country will have a future.
Mr Bush was not a Democrat-President..
SMR   January 4th, 2009 1:53 pm ET
I agree that the 1-2 punch of Bush,Cheney by far was our worst. Bush was dominated by Cheneys and his cronies. Only the rich and big business ( big oil ) can call them a hero. Many will say that they kept us safe, but 911 happened on his watch. We are hated around the world because of Bushs stance on IRAQ, bulling tactics and plain ignorance on the world financial situation. The American people have seen enough to never elect another far right candidate again. I BELIEVE THAT THIS ANMINISTRATION SHOULD BE INVESTIGATED AND TRIED FOR ALL WRONG DOINGS!!!
And that's the way I see them, too, Harry. Now…you, Nancy, and the rest of the Dems had better get busy getting this country back on track – WITHOUT ANY PORK – or else you'll find yourselves out the door just like Bush!
the idiot   January 4th, 2009 1:49 pm ET
I guess that the "change" we have been waiting for. Sounds like the same old attitude to me. Perhaps Reid can take the prestige of the Congress down a few more points. Way to start out Harry.
Brenda C   January 4th, 2009 1:48 pm ET
With congress with less approval rating than Bush we understand how Harry Reid can make a comment like this. But hold on old man Reid you aint seen nothing yet. IF you get re-elected you're gonna see what a bad President is.
Israel worried about obama presidency:
News article reports why Israel's worried.
As for our president-elect, his all-too-coy insistence that "we have only one president at a time" has been selective from the start. Glad to pontificate on stimulus packages and union benefits, Obama has used the one-president mantra to avoid taking stands on difficult issues that bedevil or bewilder him.
Our president-elect needed to make a clear, prompt statement in support of Israel. He didn't. If I were an Israeli leader, I'd be worried, too.
Obama's notorious for avoiding firm stands that might alienate any important constituency. But you can't have it both ways in the Middle East. He needs to stand up in support of Israel. Now.
Israeli soldiers should not have to go into battle worrying about an American bullet in the back.
peggyledbetter   January 4th, 2009 1:47 pm ET
Yes, I agree Bush is the worst president ever in history alongside his brother Jeb Bush who use to be the governer of Florida. I long the day to see Bush moving truck leaving the White House!!
karl ernst   January 4th, 2009 1:47 pm ET
Reid continues to make statements that can only suggest he a complete idiot. Add to this one his statement that the Senate will decide the Minn. seat race which only provides support for that notion. He should ask the people of Minn. what they think. Also, he has apparently recommended to the Illinois leadership that they consider two white women for Obama's vacant seat because he thinks Burris, a black man, cannot win the next election. Such wanton huberis! Finally, since he thinks Bush is so bad, he should try to explain the toilet bowel ratings by Americans that Congress is receiving under the 'duh-huh duo's' – his and Pelosi's- leadership. Mindless blatherings from zero-grade 'leaders' is not what we need right now. All I can say is he must like the taste of shoe-leather because he always seems to have his foot in his mouth.
thanks
Jacky   January 4th, 2009 1:45 pm ET
a REAL American   January 4th, 2009 1:42 pm ET
Who are you to talk, Senator? Nobody's denying that Bush made all kinds of mistakes and boneheaded comments, but please tell us, Mr. Reid, what accomplishments do you have to brag about? And no, pushing through pork barrel projects and wasting taxpayer money doesn't count!
Kirsten   January 4th, 2009 1:40 pm ET
I love how Harry Reid says this like he's so important. If I recall correctly, Harry Reid hasn't exactly been a beacon of light himself, so how does he feel he has any authority on this subject.
Jack Lancour   January 4th, 2009 1:38 pm ET
I can agree that President Bush was not the best to have ever hold the office but he was far from the worst. Give me him over Carter and Clinton any day. Carter did nothing good or bad and Clinton brought more shame to the office than anyone cares to remember. You can't blame the president for the current situation as we all know congress really runs the country. The congress has done nothing the past four years and if you are being honest about things they had/have a lower rating than President Bush as far as the job goes. Lets start fresh and let gongress and the new president do we what voted for them to do and that is to run the country for the good of everyone and stop the politics that has ruined this great country. As a retired military man I would give my life to protect the country to this day but expect the elected officials to do their job as well and that job s not doing what is best for themselves or their party but what is best for all of us in this great country.
Oh yeah, and Jenin happened on the BUSH watch as well. Look at what is going on now that every other country is appalled but this administration.
Goodbye and Good riddance Bush. We see you are trying to leave as big a mess as you can for President Obama, again the people will have a brain and someone with the 'desire' to be President.
The Presidency was a fluke for Bush and why he stole it in 2000(Florida) and 2004(Ohio). Who would have thought anyone could make a big of a mess as Bush, Cheney and Rove!?
Reid isn't saying anything that the whole world doesn't agree with but he did forget to include Cheney. It's amazing our country is still standing after Bush because he certainly has done everything wrong to destroy us. Bush is a good example of how it doesn't take a bomb to destroy us.
Phil from Ashburn   January 4th, 2009 1:20 pm ET
He is the worst president.
California Gold   January 4th, 2009 1:20 pm ET
I can't recall a President worse than George W. Bush. Thankfully his campaign promise to privatize Social Security failed. Everytime I think of his plan that called for investing an individual's Social Security money in the stock market I shudder. In 2008 my 401k shrunk down to a 201k.
Paying Attention in High School History   January 4th, 2009 1:20 pm ET
It's sad a senator liek Reid doesn't have the analytical ability to compare Bush to the likes of Harding or Buchanan, but rather lists negative things and draws the conclusion that "really bad" = "worst." Sorry but you can really really suck as a president and still not be the worst. Bush is such a case. Though he screwed up big time, several times, lost America's respect around the world, and did not unite the country, he was nowhere near as bad as Harding who did nothing but drink martinis, or Buchanan who did nothing but suck up to Congress in order to prevent the Civil war from happening in his term.
billy-bayou   January 4th, 2009 1:20 pm ET
Harry Reid is nothing more or less than the lowest form of thingie to ever walk upright on two legs and is not fit to shine President Bushes boots. That slime should not be in the same room with President Bush.
So that's Reid's opinion and I KNOW President Bush is one of the best presidents we've ever had. So much for opinions, but keep in mind what the country thinks of congress in general. Reid certainly is what he is and I call them the way I see them, also – Reid is a —– well, I shouldn't even think such derogatory things.
Bush lied…people died!
Not only was Bush our worst president ever, he was also the dumbest.
Anyone who goes back and checks the amount of "vacation" time that Bush took will be amazed.
He will always be known as the Great Divider.
He did not stay up or read up on what was going on in the world.
He spent lives, money, and world crediblity like a drunken sailor.
To those of you who say "he kept us protected all these years"….I have another one for you as well. He "kept the skies of Alabama protected from the Vietnamese Air Force" as well….while some of us got shot up or killed…..he ran around like a playboy.
Only a few more days left for that idiot to screw us up.
Debby   January 4th, 2009 1:16 pm ET
Reid is the worse majority leader "we have ever had" . All he does is criticize everyone and hasn't gotten anything done himself.
Lori   January 4th, 2009 1:16 pm ET
Does anyone think that the Republican Messiah was a good President except brain-dead Republicans?
Timothy   January 4th, 2009 1:16 pm ET
Hey Harry,
The home for senile idiots called and they're looking for you to return. Maybe after the next election, huh? By the way, what has your democratic majority accomplished? Oh, that's right, NOTHING!!!
Proud American   January 4th, 2009 1:15 pm ET
I know all you stupid republicans are going to come out with your hate, but I agree with Reid. George Bush and the rest of the republican party couldn't govern themselves out of a paper bag. Is it againt the law to be stupid??
Texas Teacher   January 4th, 2009 1:14 pm ET
And Daddy Bush wants Jed or is Jeb to be senator or president? Is the man losing his mind! After all the damage little Georgie has done, all we need is another Bush…. to push us completely over the cliff! Does Daddy Bush NOT see the damage his son with HIS type of politics has done to this country…. I guess not! When you are so out of touch with reality, all you see is what you want to see!
They and their Fat Cat buddies are doing just fine… in fact, BETTER than EVER! Why should they NOT want more of the same… they are banking on the fact that as soon as Obama straightens out their mess, they can jump right back in their and destroy the country this time. Excuse me while I barf! :(
Kim   January 4th, 2009 1:14 pm ET
Preaching to the choir, Harry.
Patrick   January 4th, 2009 1:13 pm ET
I think Reid is the worst senator we've ever had. When he said "I believe we've already lost the war" he stabbed every person in the military in the back. He needs to be removed from office. Like Bush or not he's done what he's thought is right for our country, Reid has done what he's thought is right for Harry Reid.
pam Eugene OR   January 4th, 2009 1:11 pm ET
Reid is a blow hard and in his own way almost as bad a Bush. I don't think he will work well with the new administration. He is too fixated on punishing Bush instead of moving forward.
Reid is way too partisan to be good for US recovery.
Tim   January 4th, 2009 1:10 pm ET
I really believe that Harry Ried is the worst Senate Majority Leader America has ever had. The Senate needs to kick his butt out of the leadership role and give it to somebody who will have the guts to make the tough decisians, stand up to his own people and look out for us.
Bush has not been a very good President, that's true. But if I were to choose between the 2 as the worst, it would have to be Reid, I think most Democrats like me who are struggling everyday, that have an open mind and not a kool aid drinker, would agree. Shut up and leave Reid.
Shannon   January 4th, 2009 1:10 pm ET
I agree. It sickens.. I hope Obama is the greatest we've ever had. I am looking forward. Its time to pay it forward for our country. Lets all make a difference and get back on track. We can do it…
big R   January 4th, 2009 1:09 pm ET
I believe the comments against Pres. Bush are comming from one of the worst leaders of the senate of all times. His posistion did nothing for the country for the last 2 years, and I believe Pres. Obama will get some of the same and he will not be able to get the senate and house to cooperate and pas what he wants. A great stale mate.
Especially when it comes to the second amendment,and gov, Spending
Texas Teacher   January 4th, 2009 1:08 pm ET
Oh, come on…. I mean seriously! The Republicans have been drunk with power and out of control for 8 years….it is time to take whip and chair and drive them back into their caves! *LOL* And Bush is the leader of the pack… so it only makes sense to begin with him.
Sorry, I couldn't resist! Actually, I'm all for this "all the People" business… but it's hard to keep a straight face looking up from this black abyss Bush and Company have been dug us into! You either laugh or you cry! :)
Neal   January 4th, 2009 1:07 pm ET
True dat!
Say what you will, but in every measurable way this country is in worse shape now than it was 8 years ago.
Proud American   January 4th, 2009 1:06 pm ET
I think Reid was being really, really nice with that comment. Bush should be honored…Idiot
john q public   January 4th, 2009 1:05 pm ET
I am moving to las vegas nv just to vote against this useless politician
nevada deserves much better than this old bitter man.after he's gone its off to california to help ms pelosi retire.
these clowns need to look at jimmy carter and the current congress
before they start throwing stones
Jeff, California   January 4th, 2009 1:04 pm ET
Nontheless, Harry Reid may very well be the worst Senate Majority Leader ever. His polls are barely better than those of the President. This kind of sniping IS today's greatest problem. Godspeed to Obama and all the change I pray he brings to DC and America.
Notnek   January 4th, 2009 1:04 pm ET
George Bush is the cause of thousands of deaths,, and the looting of the American Treasury by the greedy and powerful. I cannot understand why he is still in office and not in jail.
TrueIndependent   January 4th, 2009 1:03 pm ET
This is one of those very rare occasions I find myself agreeing with Harry Reid.
Minnesota man   January 4th, 2009 1:02 pm ET
Reid is right Buush is the worst President ever in the world.
Ed, Santa Fe, NM   January 4th, 2009 1:02 pm ET
AMEN TO THAT….
Bush was a disaster in every way
GOP no more!   January 4th, 2009 1:01 pm ET
that's what happens when a retard becomes a head of state
observer   January 4th, 2009 12:56 pm ET
Harry ; you criticizing Bush is hysterical !! Look to your own approval ratings . What a hoot !!
CommonSense   January 4th, 2009 12:55 pm ET
He is correct. Unfortunately, Reid is the worst Senate Majority Leader we've ever had!
j   January 4th, 2009 12:52 pm ET
He is certainly in the top 5. This country may never regain the status it once had but he's not the only one to blame. He had help.
Eric Jones   January 4th, 2009 12:52 pm ET
Yeah Reid, lets just let the liabilities of social security and medicare ruin the entire nation as we sink farther into debt. The fact is we cannot support those who do not work. Look at GM they are the micro version of the entire united states.
Sorry that i smell too Reid. I hope you find yourself long gone very soon. Your the worst Senate majority leader of my life time. Fortunately for you, Americans don't even seem to know your name, or party affiliation.
Clint, Kentucky   January 4th, 2009 12:51 pm ET
And thankfully in 2006 and 2008, Americans voted the way they saw things…
bye bye Bush, you won't be missed…
richard rohde   January 4th, 2009 12:50 pm ET
Way to strike that tone of bipartisanship that Reid and all the Democrats love to talk about. Why didn't Gregory ask him about all the earmarks he is promising on the "stimulus" bill, while the VPE is saying there won't be any. Which one do you think is being truthful?
DrMan   January 4th, 2009 12:50 pm ET
At least Bush isn't a racist like Reid. Can you imagine the uproar if Bush had done what Reid did and told Blago not to pick blacks to replace Obama because he didn't want Republicans to win the seat at the next election? He's a bitter old man who deserves all the animosity he gets; at least until he's voted out of office in 2010.
Mesa Mick   January 4th, 2009 12:50 pm ET
Reid doesn't usually doesn't get it but this time he's spot on….
Now, put your money where your mouth is Reid – put Bush on trial for war crimes and breaking his oath of office to "protect and defend" the Constitution. Like so many of the Dems however, you probably don't have the spine for it – to bad….
Tom from PA   January 4th, 2009 12:49 pm ET
For at least my lifetime – Reid's right… GW is the worst I've ever seen.
JM   January 4th, 2009 12:49 pm ET
He's a fine one to talk. He's the worst majority leader ever. The only one with a lower approval rating than Pres Bush is congress.
