Blagojevich sets special election dates for Emanuel seat

Gov. Blagojevich names dates to hold a special election to fill former Rep. Rahm Emanuel's congressional seat.

Gov. Blagojevich names dates to hold a special election to fill former Rep. Rahm Emanuel's congressional seat.

(CNN) - Gov. Rod Blagojevich set a spring date Monday for a special election to fill the congressional seat formerly held by Obama chief of staff Rahm Emanuel.

Blagojevich said primary voters in the state's 5th Congressional District will head to the polls March 3, and make their final pick April 7. The dates are based on recommendations by local elections officials.

Emanuel's resignation of the congressional seat formerly held by Blagojevich himself was effective Friday, January 2.

Please make sure that you know the rules of the game before you whine and complain and try to draw conclusions. The standard operating policy is that senators are appointed and congressman are picked by special election.

"Reporters, I hope you dare to print what you find out about our PE during his four years in office…you owe it to the American people to be honest about his dealings; not keep it from us."

What kind of nonsense is THIS? Oh - that's right. Obama is supposed to fix EIGHT MISERABLE YEARS of Bush/Cheney hell in the two weeks BEFORE he takes office, right? And somehow this makes everything you and Obama-mama right?

Are you so jaded by your own Republican party that you now suspect EVERYONE is on the take and shady? Must be sad.

I can't WAIT until the eight years are over and there is a roaring economy finally, the endless unjustified war is over, jobs are back and housing is again climbing in value. I'm sure you and your pal Obama-mama will think of SOMETHING that's wrong with all that...or you'll just say that's Bush's maginifence finally showing itself eight years after he left.

True to form. That's why Republicans are right now the most irrelevant political party on the planet.

FITZPATRICK – CONRAD BLACK – CHICAGO SUN TIMES. SOMEBODY DESTROYED A NEWPAPER AND A BILLION DOLLARS OF SHAREHOLDER EQUITY AND SADDLED THE TAXPAYER WITH ENORMOUS LITIGATION AND INCARCERATION COSTS, WHILE DRIVING INVESTORS AND POTENTIAL INVESTORS AWAY FROM THE US. NO WONDER YOUR ECONOMY IS IN RECESSION!

AT LEAST THE GOVERNOR UNDERSTANDS THE MEANING OF HIS OATH AND OF SERVING THE PUBLIC RATHER THAN HIS OWN EGO! KUDOS TO THE GOVERNOR FOR DOING HIS JOB! IF FITZPATRICK'S CONDUCT IS PROVEN TO BE MALICIOUS, I HOPE HE IS HELD ACCOUNTABLE!

Funny stuff by good ole' Jenny. What we should be talking about is the CBR years. (Cheney, Bush, Rumsfeld). Those guys managed to screw our troops with substandard equipment and services (KBR anyone?), which surely got our forces killed.
How many people know that Iraq had plans to withdraw unconditionally from Kuwait.... but the USA said no deal.
Better yet..... How many people know that Sadaam was given US approval to invade?
CBR provided the worst adminstration in US Presidential History.
Obama has not stepped one foot into office yet....and Jenny hopes they dish on his years as President? Wow.

The law doesn't work that quickly in this country. Yes, its frustrating, but it is also the reason why things actually work - because laws are carefully drafted, contemplated, and considered before being enacted. If we could indict someone immediately and convict them two days later, the room for manipulation and mistakes greatly widens. The case against Blagoyavich, unfortunately, is not one hundred percent clear - it is not clear from the tapes, to me anyway, that he actually received something 'of value' in exchange for his promise of the senate seat. Disgusting and despicable? Absolutely. Illegal? Uncertain. Unfortunately this is one area where we apparently have not thought it all out appropriately, becuase he obviously should be stripped of any ability to appoint a governer in this circumstance. But that doesn't mean that we should rewrite the rules for one person - that could have dangerous implications for the long run.

I wish as much as anyone that this would be over – but before "releasing" Blagoyavich from his wrongdoings, we must actually address those wrongdoings.

My reading of the law says that they should probably seat Burris, and then go for a two thirds majority vote to get rid of him. Just sayin'.

A March 3 primary means having to get at least 971 valid petition signatures to make the Democratic Primary ballot (less are needed for the Republican and Green Party Primaries, but candidates in those races are either running for exercise or for a better obituary notice in the newspapers when they die, as they have no chance of winning on April 7). In reality that means getting at least 3,000 signatures in two weeks in the dead of winter, instead of the normal 90 days allocated for petition gathering. (Anthything less than that guarantees a petition challenge that will tie up the candidate until the eve of the March 3 voting, dooming their chances even if they remain on the ballot.)

Welcome to politics – Chicago style.

Obama needs this drama to SLOWLY unfold,,, it gives him time to uh, uh, uh, think of something the Obama-aid drinkers will embellish as uh, uh, a profound opinion on the matter.

LOL........ must be tough having to look inside your own party and find the same atrocities that you have claimed that the Repubs had cornered to the market on!!

so why didn't Blago include Obama's senate seat in the special election? Would it have been that costly to print the info on the same ballot? But doesn't the Illinois legislature have a say in special elections or is Blago a dictator?

Jenny, you are an idiot. From what I can see, you are against our PE because he is a democrat. Look at what your GOP President has done for you. Maybe you should see if "His Holiness" Rush could use you on his show. OOPS, now that I think about it, that's probably what you're campaigning for.
Talk to us in 4 years and see if even you think you are better off then you are today. I believe that even if you were, you would not admit it.
