The Obama transition team has released photos of the Obama girls preparing for school Monday.

WASHINGTON (CNN) — President-elect Barack Obama doesn't begin his term for another two weeks, but daughters Sasha and Malia began theirs on Monday.

According to the president-elect's transition office, Michelle Obama accompanied the two daughters to the Sidwell Friends School Monday morning — along with an expansive motorcade of U.S. Secret Service agents.

Sasha, 7, is in second grade and attending the elementary school campus in Bethesda, Maryland while Malia, 10, is in fifth grade and attending the Sidwell Friends middle school campus in Washington, DC.

Awww Pammy…So negative. Did you put your dentures in before you posted?

rodlang   January 5th, 2009 1:09 pm ET

Good luck to the girls. Now I wonder how Obama stands on the issue of vouchers…or do only the rich (like Barry and Michelle) get to send their kids to the exclusive private schools.

Connie   January 5th, 2009 1:05 pm ET

I don't care if you're Republican or Democrat, it really doesn't matter. However, it bothers me to no end when people make predictions or speak poorly of politicians without knowing the issues. If you are going to make generalizations and spout nonsense, you're better off keeping your mouth shut.

Pammy, before you make predictions about what Obama will and will not accomplish as President, you should wait until he actually takes office. Judging people before they have had a chance to prove themselves is really not smart. Besides, as a United States citizen, you should hope that he doesn't fail. This is your future at stake as well. Grow up. I didn't like Bush, but I still hoped that he made the best decisions for the country while he was in office. Also, your argument lacks substance. There is nothing to back your claim that Obama will fail, so your words bear no weight. Before you condemn someone, you should get educated on the subject. Then you may be able to make an intelligent, justifiable argument. Otherwise, keep your ignorant comments to yourself.

Matt   January 5th, 2009 1:04 pm ET

Oh wow, a Quaker Friends School. Would like to see what Obama is paying for that education.

Would have thought Obama would have made a point to send them to a liberal thinking public school or something. Doesn't really seem to have much faith in Bill Ayers public school system!

Christina   January 5th, 2009 1:03 pm ET

Why does everyone get so upset when something that doesn't have violence in it ends up on the news? I actually enjoyed seeing those pictures and wish OUR new President and his family the best! I am proud to say Obama is my president elect and no matter what anyone says about him, just remember he is your president too LOL. Anyways, I love the Obamas and wish them well!

kelly WI   January 5th, 2009 1:03 pm ET

Big deal,,,yawn. Isn't it just convenient for there to be a photographer on scene during their private lives. Thousands a day spent on 2 motorcades. Disgusting. Those kids aren't any more valuable than ours. Any one who wanted to know where the kids are can find out easy enough. Dosen't matter if cnn tells or not. Too bad the kids can't be just kids like we were, have to be kept in protective bubble.
Role models? I don't need any role models. Just another buzz word. Think about it.

Carmen   January 5th, 2009 1:03 pm ET

HOW is this news? Thousands of children attend school everyday………..

Reds from NJ   January 5th, 2009 1:01 pm ET

I believe the Obamas will be a great role model for family values for all families, not only minorities. In a great majority of families the parents do not take an interest in their children's education, social upbringing, etc. If you have someone to show you how a real family functions, then maybe some of our children can be saved. I know I wish my mother went to school with me the first day when I changed schools! Where was she? at home watching TV.

Mrs Grossman   January 5th, 2009 1:00 pm ET

Why does everybody keep calling bho a black man? he's only half black and there's another word for that, "mulatto". There are millions of this race. What's the big deal?

Obaman January 5th, 2009 9:46 am ET
"Obama and Michelle are real role models for the nation. May the Lord help them!"

Actually, the only noteworthy thing they have done is get elected. Aren't we supposed to wait until he is in office to see what he does before we judge him? Kinda of hard to call them role models just yet.

And I dont' think either Michelle or Sara should have to stay home. They both have a right to choose to work and have a career- even if neither of them have too. Michelle also had a high power job taking her away from her children and first lady won't be much different with all the responsibilities that come with being a first lady.

Cindy   January 5th, 2009 12:59 pm ET

Welcome to DC Mr President elect and family.
The girls will do just find, first day in school always a challenged.

TN   January 5th, 2009 12:58 pm ET

Whether you like it or not, this family is going to be in the news a lot, and they should be. If they weren't in the news people would want to know why not. When they are in the news, people want to know why it's news. Get over it, I find the upcoming first family fascinating. Good for these two parents to be good parents and with everything else going on, have time for their kids first day of school. I'm sure they are anxious. I am so tired of negative people and the negative comments. Get a job or a life or shut up.

Dave, Central Illinois   January 5th, 2009 12:57 pm ET

They are both very cute girls and they deserve their privacy. And, so do the Palins. Those of you who are saying "stop the hate" and the like should also practice what you preach. The hate from the Left against the Palins has become so extreme that some blog sites dedicated to making fun of Palin's child with Downs Syndrome have been started. Anybody that finds that funny is mentally ill.

Flo   January 5th, 2009 12:54 pm ET

May God be with the Obamas, and may He continues on blessing them.

It's really disturbing to read some of these posts. Is it Rush and Bill O? Is it racism? What is wrong with some Americans? Please stop continuing the devisive rhetorical tactits started by Atwater, Rove and there slimy ilk. We as Americans should look at this family with pride — we are indeed able to live up to the promise that is America.

I wonder how Obama explained to his children the change that would come to their lives when he started running for president. How do you explain concepts like "Media" or "Secret Service"? to an 7 or 8 year old girl? How do you prepare her for this kind of stardom? Will it change them? And if so, how to counter that? We don't need any more Britneys or Parises…

Proud American   January 5th, 2009 12:52 pm ET

This is dumb. Why on earth should this be public knowledge? Annoucing to the world where the girls are going to school compromises their safety! Irresponsible reporting in the name of the first amendment!

Tom   January 5th, 2009 12:50 pm ET

I'm a Republican who was not happy to see BHO elected.
That said, the man is the President-elect and I'm sick and tired of seeing disrespectful holiday photos of him and hope the press will spare his daughters the tabloid treatment and give them as normal a childhood they can have considering their father's new job.

lovable liberal   January 5th, 2009 12:49 pm ET

What a great picture! Barack may be two weeks away from the Presidency, but he's still dad, and the girls are not going to be too impressed by him even if he gives them a three-point plan for their new school.

pammy   January 5th, 2009 12:48 pm ET

Forgot one thing. I agree that his girls should go to private school. The public school system does not need all the media coverage. I also don't think it should have been broadcast just where the girls are going to school. They need their privacy and need to be kept out of the media.

Rick   January 5th, 2009 12:48 pm ET

Whether it's the cat, or going to school, the press will report on anything involving the President. And that's not necessarily a bad thing. Stories like this, though not earth-shattering, do show that the Bushes and Obamas are also fellow human beings with the same concerns and life issues that the rest of us face. And the rest of us should probably consider ourselves lucky we aren't hounded by the press.

It's not only Bush, Obama, etc. Just think of how much "fluff" news is reported on various movie stars, professional athletes and others of "celebrity". It won't change, but there's not need for the hate just because it's reported.

Theresa   January 5th, 2009 12:45 pm ET

Of course it's not that important compared to President Bush's cat dying.

pammy   January 5th, 2009 12:44 pm ET

before I start, I am not a racist. Far from it. I have a black son-in-law whom I love very much.

Get used to nothing but Obama and his family in the news for the next 8 years. The media made him into a saint, almost eerie the way they portrayed him with 90% coverage compared to 10% for McCain. But thanks to them he got elected. personally I think he will bomb as president and really don't care. Just hope all the idiots who listened to the medias fasination of him will get what they deserve for making him president. Has anyone noticed how well the media has covered the war. How we have been winning. No, I don't think so. They will wait until Obama gets in and give him credit for anything good. The problem is he isn't going to make any changes. I guess there is one good thing I can say about Obama. We don't have to have Hillary for the next 8 years. Ugh!!!!!!! We are getting the best of two evils. But seriously if you think he is a saint and is going to change the world, Sorry. Won't happen.

Re: Obaman January 5th, 2009 9:46 am ET

Obama and Michelle are real role models for the nation. May the Lord help them!

Is this your type of role model?

Bullied his way into the US Senate by getting his opponents disqualified. Oh, and by the way, he practically ran unopposed.

Voted "Present" for the majority of required Senate votes taking no stand either way.

Described the US Constitution as a document of negative liberties and stated the US should come up with something else.

Will bankrupt the coal industry no matter how clean it can become and energy prices will skyrocket.

Wants a 250,000 person stateside militia that reports to the president and is as well funded and equipped as the Army.

Opposes school choice even though he is for it when it comes to his own children.

These are just a few.

The left loves to describe folks like me as "hateful". I would say I am concerned for the future of the USA under this man.

Yes Obaman, May the Lord Help Him.

virginia nielsen   January 5th, 2009 12:42 pm ET

@richard rohde

Perhaps you should call your goddes of the frozen tundra and ask her to STOP calling People magazine to discuss her unwed daughter's baby and then recommend she NOT post articles about the same subject on the official Alaskan government website.

We all would be happy to ignore what's her face, but she continues to exploit her children and display shameless ambition just for the media spotlight the same "gotcha" media she professed to hate just 2 months ago. Now she is exploiting babies to get 300.000 out of people mag..

PC   January 5th, 2009 12:40 pm ET

What's the big deal with the pledge of allegiance? I love my country and am very happy to have been born here.

Let’s get real, why would I recite something that does not apply to me. In elementary school once I understood the meaning of the words, I stop reciting the pledge of allegiance, for the very reason that it’s stated in the words; those benefits did not then or today apply to me.

My allegiance is with USA, because this is my COUNTRY.
I can only hope that Obama being president will open some eyes, too know that we are all equal, and one day soon I to will get to recite the pledge of allegiance and it will ring true to my ears Sonya as it rings for your son.

I want to welcome to DC Obama and family

Linda32   January 5th, 2009 12:39 pm ET

To those with nasty comments….we care because Malia and Sasha will be the First Children. If you don't like the story, don't read it. It is so funny to see your comments about children who are actually going to school and compare them to those of others that just having babies.

Also, why do people have to read these articles through left or right "eyes"….

shoegazer   January 5th, 2009 12:36 pm ET

This might be a tiny bit newsworthy if the headline read"Obamas girls
refuse to go to School".

Ken   January 5th, 2009 12:35 pm ET

I would think that the media would have better things to cover than Obama's kids starting school! What a joke!

Angie-OHIO   January 5th, 2009 12:35 pm ET

God bless the 1st family. And I hope the media leaves them alone after this.

Terri   January 5th, 2009 12:34 pm ET

Those girls are adorable. I hope that they enjoy their new school.

Dionne   January 5th, 2009 12:31 pm ET

I am glad to see that the girls are transitioning well from Chicago to Washington, DC. But I am really concerned that the author of this newsletter would give so much detail to where the girls are attending school. First, it really is not anyone's business where they are going to school. Second, this is a security issue when this much information is leaked to the public.

The author should be ashamed of himself or herself. Some things should be left private. To the author: how about you list the names and locations of your children's schools in a newsletter so that everyone can see, just to keep it fair.

ceomomof2   January 5th, 2009 12:30 pm ET

This is the most historic presidency ever. Therefore, the first day of school for the children of the first Black President-Elect of the US is news. Perhaps not breaking, but it is news. Having said that, I do realize that many of you for various reasons, have had your fill of news regarding our next president and his family. I suggest you get over it as there will be many more stories to read. If it bothers you that much, you can choose not to read the article and return to the fascinating news about Paris Hilton, the death of the first cat, Bristol Palin's new baby and GED prep, or the ongoing press about the very important Angelina Jolie. Oh, and for those of you that insist on comparing the Obama girls first day of school to that of your own children…As soon as you become president, I'm sure that CNN would love to have the pics to post.

Whyputaname   January 5th, 2009 12:30 pm ET

Ya know CNN and other media outlets, why are you broadcasting what/where these girls are going to school for. Or what Hotel the Obama's are staying at.

With all of the crazies and extemists out there maybe it's better that you don't. IT IS CALLED SECURITY, and for security reasons you shouldn't be broadcasting this!

The media would be sitting in the bathroom with them if given half a chance!

Thomas   January 5th, 2009 12:27 pm ET

What gives me pause is that CNN reports the location of the shcools the Obama children are atteding. Maybe I am all alone here, but this just doesn't seem necessary. Not in these precarious times.

ted   January 5th, 2009 12:27 pm ET

Is this the most important news story today?

What about the fighting in Israel?

What about the economy?

What about the war in Iraq and Afghanistan?

This is not news!!!!!!!

Beverly   January 5th, 2009 12:25 pm ET

LOL. FOX has the same pictures & story too. Maybe you should try the New York Times, wait, they have the story also. Oh well, maybe you should just LIVE WITH IT!!!!

Michele   January 5th, 2009 12:24 pm ET

If the Obamas wish to keep the girls out of the lens of the media, perhaps they should not be releasing photos . . .

jm for sc   January 5th, 2009 12:23 pm ET

BJ, there is not such thing as left and right wing. That is just a political saying. The Obama family is just as much of a role model as any of the other white presidents and their families were.

We need to see what this president is going to do before judging him.

Joseph   January 5th, 2009 12:22 pm ET

excuse me Sonya unless your child attends a private school he isn't saying the pledge of allegiance either

jm for sc   January 5th, 2009 12:20 pm ET

Why is this news? They were in school all along and will be until they complete college. I would hope that the media would respect the privacy as well and consider the saftey of those children by not reporting every move they make.

Some people will do or say anything to have their name mentioned on television even if it lands them in jail.

Irish   January 5th, 2009 12:20 pm ET

These are adorable girls, but I hope that pictures of their every move will not be published constantly over the next 4 or 8 years. It will be hard enough already for them to have anything resembling a normal childhood.

Jon   January 5th, 2009 12:20 pm ET

For all those who keep complaining about these types of stories . . . Why keep commenting on them? Why not boycott them? Show your "disinterest."

Jacky   January 5th, 2009 12:18 pm ET

CNN also reported George Bush's cat died. This is not partisan politics. The happenings of our president, president-elect, and the White House are national news, even if it is mundane. Not interested? No one forced you to. The headline told you what the subject was. DON'T CLICK if you don't care.

Kelly Virginia   January 5th, 2009 12:18 pm ET

People get a life…President Obama is the first Black to hold this office so some people wants to know about the kids its natural because there haven't been childrens in the White House for years…..It's not like we will see them everyday….this is historical for the moment….It will all fade away…..Instead of complaining everyone should be praying for this first family and our nation….

Scott NYC Independent   January 5th, 2009 12:16 pm ET

As considerate Americans shouldn't we be more concerned about our first families safety and the childrens privacy. After all this is the man we expect will lead the fight, capture and possible death of Osama Bin Laden. The family should be afforded every possible element of privacy we can respectfully give them. This is not something the public needs to know.

I have voted since JFK, and the kid(s) of every new prez get their pics taken on first day of school. Same with the Brit royalty. It is almost a tradition.

I have seen too many deaths within our governmental ranks, and I can't bring myself to mention them because it is painful.

My prayers go out to the Obamas for having the courage–the guts–to take on the presidency and risk their lives.

And I sure in heck wish their kids godspeed as they venture out into a new world.

The only point not being made is the issue of private vs. public schools.

Simultaneously, he claims not to be an 'elitist'.

Typical Obama – big talk, small walk,

To Ho Chi Daddy-

Let me get this straight. In order to understand the importance of an education and a good parental influence to young people, Blacks need to see an African American President of the United States acting that way?

No matter that Presidents with children, albeit White, have done this since the nation was born. No matter that presidents of corporations and businesses, Black and White, have dealt with their children and their education, properly. No matter that plain old members of your local community, regardless of color, have shown the way to raising
children.

Blacks need to see the President of the United States raise his children to know the correct procedure. I guess I can accept that, beings as we have been told that only after electing an African American President can Blacks truly believe they "can do anything".
Senators, governors, athletes, corporate CEOs weren't enough to open the eyes of Black youth that employment success was obtainable. Seeing the Black President being a good parent will surely make the average African American become parent of the year.

I will watch and wait with bated breath.

Gee, this is something that military children do every day. They change schools, sometimes annually, sometimes more than once a year. No one, except another military family, cares about that. If the Obamas didn't want their children to go through this "trauma" (at least the media seems to think it is), then Michelle could have stayed home. Either way, I'm sure they were not in public schools, something a military child faces, since the military makes almost nothing compared to a Senator (with all the bennies, the extra speaking fees, the bribes, etc).

I am grateful to the Obama family for being flexible enough to take up their roots and move into a whole new life in order to take charge of our country at this time of economic chaos. That is a very difficult thing to do for young children, leaving their friends behind in the midst of a school year. I appreciate the example for all families that they are giving.

All the negative clowns on here just love it when there is bad news. This tells a whole lot about them. Miserable, lonely and hateful. They have a constant need for bickering and bad news.

Donna   January 5th, 2009 11:52 am ET

Thats nice, let all the terrorists know where his kids are. Secret Service protection or not, this is not a bright idea. While I am very interested in the Obama family, such details I dont need – and neither do our enemies.

KC   January 5th, 2009 11:52 am ET

Come on people leave it alone. It won't be easy for these young girls to make the changes that will be required of them in the next few days, weeks, months and years. Just start playing nice will you? Life is just too short.

Mike, Syracuse NY   January 5th, 2009 11:51 am ET

Wow, you guys seem pretty driven to leave the Obama kids alone, and rightly so. Too bad you don't feel the same about the Palin kids, who get trashed on a daily basis.

Ken in Dallas   January 5th, 2009 11:50 am ET

Anything to avoid talking about our responsibility for green-lighting the Gaza operation, eh?

Ken   January 5th, 2009 11:49 am ET

I can't believe I'm witnessing this moment…. A young African American family in the White House. What great examples they are for blacks (and others as well).

And for those who stating this isn't news. This is definitely news… when is the last time we had first daughters that were black? This is history… so they are reporting history.

No, Allison-TN, because your son is not important!

Not all "Lefties" are demented. But please read the very hateful comments on the Sarah Palin ticker regarding her daughter's newborn. Some of those comments are demented plain and simple.

Families should be off limits. Leave the kids alone.

Sonya and the rest of you Obamaphobes need to chill out. I can realte to not being happy with the results of an election. Imagine how irate you would be if McCain had won and the Supreme court gave it to Obama. Yes if you make more than 250k your taxes will go up. Be mad about that but try to keep the internet lies to a minimum. The Obama's love this country. Where else would their success even be possible?

I'm sure we will all (yes even me) have trouble with some of Obama's policies. Let those auguments come in time.. But lets cut the crap about them being un -American. Your side lost.. so do what we did. Complain about the things he does that you don't like.

Alex   January 5th, 2009 11:42 am ET

Why is everyone surprised? This is a repeat of the JFK phenomena of the 60's. We now have a fresh, young, diverse First Family that has captivated the nation's attention. If one of them hiccups, it's going to be newsworthy for at least the next year, if not longer.

I think it is smart of the Obamas to release a few press photos to satiate the nation's curiosity and to ward off nosy press, thus allowing the kids to actually go to school without being bothered.

Cecilia   January 5th, 2009 11:41 am ET

to all of the above who can find nothing positive to say about these children, the First Family, we Lefties, I just want to say I am really sorry for all of you. You must be so unhappy, miserable and unkind
I thought that after 8 years of the Bush Administration I would not ever again feel the outrage and disgust, but here I am again – I really cannot believe what I read and hear. Are you not just a little ashamed of what the last eight years have done to America and the world. Where do you find the voice and the gumption to say anything except "Good Luck, we hope you do very well because we certainly did not" All I can say is that I will keep you in my prayers – Oh yes, Liberals do pray.

Sharon   January 5th, 2009 11:40 am ET

For all of you who wants the media to leave the girls alone so they can be normal. I don't believe CNN released these pictures.

The Obama team released the pictures with the approval of their parents.

P. Mathew   January 5th, 2009 11:38 am ET

It's been a slow day so far…right CNN?

I'm sure a majority of people wish the Obama girls all the best for their new school year….but is this really considered news? Are you going to report on what they had for lunch?

Peggy the Unemployed   January 5th, 2009 11:34 am ET

Sonya, do you have any actual proof that Barack Obama does not recite the pledge properly, or do you just repeat what you have seen online?

Allison-TN   January 5th, 2009 11:34 am ET

My son starts back to school tomorrow. Will CNN be at our house in the morning?

getagrip   January 5th, 2009 11:34 am ET

I can truly see why Michelle and Barack are very close and strong with their love for each other. The more other hates you the stronger your love will become. Believe me; I know what I'm saying. Keep your faith strong in Christ and everything will be alright.

May the Lord continue to protect you and your family Mr. President-elect.

Donna   January 5th, 2009 11:33 am ET

Sonya–you are just ignorant. Obama stands for the pledge and recites it. Please check the facts rather than relying on internet rumors before you make those sort of nasty insinuations.

Bill in Illinois   January 5th, 2009 11:33 am ET

Ok – fine. Now can the "news organizations" lay off of the girls and let them lead somewhat normal lives and actually give us coverage of something newsworthy please?

These young ladies deserve a little privacy and and the news folks don't need to be the first one to scoop all of the others on what they wore to school today or how they had their hair fixed. Give them an opportunity to grow up on their own.

I think that most of us would rather see some reporting on the issues of the day.

Kyle   January 5th, 2009 11:32 am ET

This is nice news to hear about. We have too much doom and gloom every day, all day. While this may not be major for some of the sour critics that have commented already, it is a major step for these little girls. I am sure that if these little girls had white faces, there wouldn't be as many sour comments.
Did I just play the race card? Yes, I sure did!!

Kim   January 5th, 2009 11:30 am ET

Have a great first day at school, girls! I know it's hard starting a new school, and especially mid-term, but I hope they'll have a great day and settle in quickly to their new surroundings.

Sandy C.   January 5th, 2009 11:30 am ET

It will be a difficult move for the girls. I relocated when I was 11 – new state and new school. It was horrible – missed my friends and familar surroundings. I wish the girls the very best in this 'their own transition.'

The leaders around the world will not understand this constant attention on the Obama family and why so many Americans feel it's important to know every detail of their lives.

Obama is a first for the US………but lets keep the respect the office of President should have around the world and not put them in the same catagory as Parris Hilton and Madonna!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Going off to Friends may not be a headliner, but it is still news-and great news too. All teh best to the Obama girls on their first day. It is nice to see small children in the White house again.

JimS.   January 5th, 2009 11:28 am ET

What happened to "leave the kids alone"?

Oh, and Richard R, as far as "lefties leaving Palin alone" never happening, look how many people persist in their irrational hatred of the Clintons, and can't miss a chance to say something nasty about them? It cuts both ways.

a REAL American   January 5th, 2009 11:27 am ET

My thoughts exactly Richard Rohde…. Obama wasn't my choice this past fall, but I do wish him and his entire family well as they transition into their new roles in life.

By the way, liberals will never stop hating Sarah Palin. Why? Since Bush and Co. are leaving in a few weeks, liberals now need a new face for all their seething and hatred, and that face is Gov. Palin.

Joe M   January 5th, 2009 11:27 am ET

Base, a lot of people care. The "snarky" remarks here and elsewhere are just more "sour grapes" from those who voted for the losers in November. Keep it up guys! There are 19 GOP Senate seats up for grabs in 2010 and all the Democrats may need are 3 at most.

Get over it. Obama's the President and most people around the world are itnerested in just what they are doing.

Franky   January 5th, 2009 11:24 am ET

"The plan will include about $300 billion in tax cuts for individuals and businesses, an aide to the transition told CNN. Obama has not publicly put a price tag on his overall stimulus plan, though his advisers have said they expect it to fall between $675 billion and $775 billion, 40% of which would be in tax cuts."

Whoa, whoa, let me get this straight…300 billion tax cuts?? So, I don't wanna sound cruel but if those tax cuts are right, people better start spending money. And also a tax cut for businesses?? If this is correct, then businesses better start spending and thriving. Let me explain to you the fallout of all this…

You gotta understand that people are not spending is because of confidence, right? You do understand that in order to see some balance in this, we gotta try and make up everything(or at least try) we lost, right? Let alone people don't really have enough money for themselves, and here we are expecting people to waste their money just because they can an extra $1,000 or so. If gas is at $1. 60 or so, what the HELL makes you think businesses and people will start spending as much as we did 4-6 months ago when gas was at an all time high??

Tax cust are good and as a matter of fact, it saves you money BUT we studied tax cust and analyzed former Presidents from the past(most noticeably GOP) who cut taxes for as much as one decade at one time. And I'm telling you right now, tax cuts are good for the short term like 2-4 years or so or less but tax cuts are not good for profit and so forth, why? Let alone we are wasting a lot of money but we are not wasting is that debt…we need some compensation, trust me, I know.

All I'm saying is I better see good numbers and hopefully when my boy gets sworn in, people will waste and produce but if they don't, I'm not gonna be mad because we didn't get nothing done, but I will be upset because we didn't get some compensation. I know, I know, we are not gonna get back our debt but the least we can do is get back on our goals and strategy.

Dekonti   January 5th, 2009 11:23 am ET

You know what? News doesn't have to be sensational or negative or pertinent to any one individual to be considered news. News just means that its relatively "new" or just happened(ing). That's all. Some people really like the Obamas and are wishing their family well as the children go off to school. Perhaps if your children were being featured and you received well wishes from everyone for them, you wouldn't have a problem with the story. But since its the Obama's children and some don't like the Obamas, then its, "so what?" or "Who Cares?". How about sharing in someone else's good times or even their bad times by wishing them well, no matter how insignificant you might think something is. Try doing/saying something positive toward someone else even if you aren't getting anything in return. Wow, what a novel idea?

does it really matter anyway   January 5th, 2009 11:22 am ET

UH….how does sending your children to school on the day school starts back make Michelle and Barack "real role models for the nation" exactly???

Cuz, my 3 kids got up today, I cooked them breakfast, packed their lunch, zipped up their jackets, put on their gloves and scarves, kissed them each and drove them to school also…..SO does that mean I'm up for some award or a ROLE MODEL????

NO it simply means I'm being a PARENT, just like the Obamas, so this kind of talk is simply ignorant.

BIG Deal….SO THEY WENT TO SCHOOL TODAY……BREAKING POLITICAL NEWS, HUH?

Kana   January 5th, 2009 11:19 am ET

So what? Other than being the Obama daughters this is a non-news event, other than to create a sensationalized media event. Children in the US go to school every day. The press needs to back off and leave the kids alone.

Mary from Sarasota FL   January 5th, 2009 11:19 am ET

This is news because most of the nation is watching how the 1st family conducts themselves as they enter the arena. Its already started. some of the people on this post have begun to raise the gate on the lions. Sad really sad. Why can't we all just get along.
look at Gaza. What a waste of time and energy for certain people to fret and fuss and actually attack other people because they think they are better than them. sad. please.

max (NY)   January 5th, 2009 11:18 am ET

To Base- Crazy wacko-This is no change- Leigh- and the like.

The saddest thing about Obama is that he doesn't has a son that would grow up and rise like his father and give America a second scoop of happiness. This would certainly infuriate those of you who, for no reason, express hatred for Obama, although Obama has not done anything bad to nobody. And it really touches me to see that some people resent him, and I wonder why? Is it because he is black, or is it because he is smart, smarter than them? Now let's analyze the fact, why is Obama considered black when his parents are black and white? I guess it's because of his skin color. But even when his skin color would be white, he would still be considered black for the fact that his father is black. So what does that lead to conclude; that in nature, in logics, in reality, and in your minds, the black gene and race is stronger and imperishable and prevails. And I can't understand why at this late and final era of the existance of humanity, people are still animated with racial discrimination? Let me ask this last question, if you are drowning and there is only one black person around to rescue you, would you rather die than to be saved by a black person? If your answer is yes, then I hope there is hell for blacks and a hell for whites.

MirCat   January 5th, 2009 11:18 am ET

As I recall,it was Palin who made her grand entrance at the Rep Convention-LOADED with a long list of derogetory, high handed "jokes" about Obama&Biden. And,the Rep ticket took it like a starving dog salivates at the smell of meat. This is in response to Richard Rohde's e-mail remark. The election is over.Move up to Alaska if you think it would help the Palins!

Michele   January 5th, 2009 11:15 am ET

Given the high profile of these children, I don't think an expensive motorcade is a waste of money. It'll probably scale back once he's been sworn into office. The Obamas need to all they can to protect their children due to the times we live in. They have a right to keep them safe and secure at all costs. If no one likes this arrangement then they shouldn't have voted him in and his girls would still be back in Chicago.

If it ain't so, then why are you constantly looking, searching, reading and responding with your comments as if it's going to change what is and what will be….YOUR NEXT PRESIDENT!!!!! You have an addiction/attraction to PE Obama. In the 12 step turn-around phase, you must first admitt to your addiction before you can get any help! It's like craving and eating to many sweets, yet saying you hate it. See..really deep down inside your sub-conscience you really love it. But you can trust me, I promise I won't tell anybody that you secretly love the Obamas and that's why you are always here with the rest of us… lol…lol…smile and show someone some kindness today. Love Ya !

For those of you condemning a expensive motorcade.. those secret service people are to keep these kids safe. Being Black i am sure they will have more threats than any other president family in the whitehouse. What would you say if something happened?? OH why didnt they have secret service?? Some people just cannot make up their minds.. dont criticize things that if you think of the opposite you wont be contradicting yourselves. plus eyes will be on these girls for the fact that there hasnt been such young children in the white house ina long long time. How they adapt and do is stuff some people like to see.

Regarding the negative comments about our new president-elect: It's amazing just how hateful people in the this country are. As a high school graduate in "60's", MLK, JFK, RFK sadly come to mind. It's not necessary for me to elaborate any further. People get ready, a new president is coming. If you care anything at all about our country, you'll support President-elect Obama and stop being total jerks and work to make this country a better place. Most importantly, let's pray that by next year this time this country will be in a better place.

Joyce A. Higgins   January 5th, 2009 11:11 am ET

I don't understand why some of these comments are so…well, rude. This is the new First Family, and of course there is interest in all aspects of a new incoming administration. President-Elect Obama's daughters are adorable and many people can relate to their own children and first days of school. Besides, if it's a slow enough news day for this to make news, count our blessings to hear something positive.

AlexNYC   January 5th, 2009 11:04 am ET

They will do just fine.

Star   January 5th, 2009 11:04 am ET

Thanks for a lil fun news in the midst of the everyday trials…I pray they are welcomed with open arms in there new environments.

sarah   January 5th, 2009 11:04 am ET

leave these children alone. they are nice and seemingly well behaved. let them be children and allowed to discover the beauty and joy of the universe. life in a fish bowl will be difficult enough without a constant telephoto lens on them. let them fall down, cry, laugh, and play with a puppy without some jerk commenting on it.

Tracy M.   January 5th, 2009 11:03 am ET

Mr. Rohde, it's Americans like you who make me proud to be a "leftie." And proud of my "leftie" daughters, who think people who call people names like "demented" because they have different opinions are icky. It's interesting that you use "honest diagreement (sic)" and "demented" in the same sentence. I personally would love to leave the Palins alone, if they would only do the same for me!

Scott   January 5th, 2009 11:03 am ET

This is one of the dumbest pieces of information CNN has put on here lately. Come on, CNN. There are plenty of MUCH more important things Americans should be informed about that you neglect to cover

Ilona Hussein Proud Canadian   January 5th, 2009 11:03 am ET

I am completely floored at the following comments about
"WHY IS THIS NEWS? EVERY BODY'S CHILDREN GO TO
SCHOOL EVERY DAY, and no one hears about them!

Thankfully these negative comments are few and more
than likely are coming from JEALOUS REPUBLICANS!

FOLKS PLEASE, THINK ABOUT WHAT YOU ARE SAYING!
These two innocent girls are, BECAUSE OF THEIR DAD'S
BEING PRESIDENT ELECT, are now very much in the
PUBLIC EYE, but first and foremost, they require daily
to be under THE GUARD OF SECURITY SERVICE, just
this last fact is NEWS WORTHY, these innocent girls now

CNN PLEASE POST THIS COMMENT tks.
have THEIR LIVES TURNED UPSIDE DOWN, AT THIS
VERY TENDER AGE.

I just hope and pray that for all of the disparaging
comments, THERE WILL BE HUNDREDS WHO
REALLY APPRECIATE why whatever these two girls
do now, WILL BE NEWS WORTHY, and I HOPE AND
PRAY, that PEOPLE WILL SAY A LITTLE PRAYER
for their SAFETY, and for them TO BE ABLE TO SETTLE
IN AND REALLY BE HAPPY IN THEIR NEW SCHOOL,
they have left most of their friends behind and they
MUST BE FEELING A BIT SCARED AND LONELY,
I hope that they will make many new friends, and
enjoy their new school for years to come.

Well you read the news, apparently you care!

Why is there so much hate in some people! Is it because of the color of these young people's skin! You are BIGOTS!

Idris   January 5th, 2009 11:02 am ET

Wow@ some of the responses…

Who cares? The nation cares….the whole world cares. The people are fascinated with this family. When was the last time the white house was occupied with small children? People and the media will enjoy watching them grow up during their fathers term in office. Although I do agree they need to give them some privacy. Great stuff..

Ann   January 5th, 2009 11:02 am ET

I for one am totally interested in everything this wonderful family does and feel privileged to be able to have news of them and their activities everyday. Please continue to cover them as they transition from ordinary people to presidential family.

Hannah Stevens   January 5th, 2009 11:01 am ET

We finally have a real family in the White House, a loving caring family. A mother and father with real "family values". I am so hopeful that our nation will heal and we will become one nation for all once again.

Mike Martin   January 5th, 2009 10:58 am ET

It's news because there are people who want to know everything that happens with our next President. I love how involved PE Obama appears in his girls lives. Too many people in the political realm end up detached from family.

Oh, and Mr. Rohde, as I lefty I'd LOVE if the media left Palin's family alone. There's no need to talk about her or her family at all anymore!

NWoods   January 5th, 2009 10:58 am ET

I find it interesting that some people complain about this not being news and thumb their nose at CNN for taking the time on this, yet you take the time to post a response on it. Ya know what the nice thing about the internet is? It is your choice what links you click and what stories you read. To you its not worth reading but to someone else it is. So why not let those who think its worthwhile read it and you can go on and focus your time and energy on the things that you deem to be more important.

Scott from DC   January 5th, 2009 10:58 am ET

Look at all the devil's advocates….doesn't matter, whatever the story is they go against the grain.. …a bunch of miserable jerks…

pam Eugene OR   January 5th, 2009 10:57 am ET

The Obama and the Plain family situations are so different. Palin used her children like walking campaign props and continues to do so to keep her self in the news.
I don't hate Palin. I just want her to go away but SHE insists on keeping herself and her children in the news. She is the one that keeps giving statements for people to comment on and using her new grandchild to try to keep herself relevant.
I wish CNN would not say exactly where and when the Obama children can be seen.

Gloria - Minnesota   January 5th, 2009 10:57 am ET

I wish them all well! I bet the girls are nervous and excited at the same time.

God Bless our soon-to-be new First Family!!

The Obama girls are precious I wish them well, not a fan of Obama but I hope that the girls enjoy their new school and make lots of friends.

Sarah Leone   January 5th, 2009 10:57 am ET

Absolutely no disrespect intended in this comment but I find the activities of the Obama girls more pertinent than an autopsy on John Travolta's son. Probably less than two-thirds of the population have ever heard of John Travolta and even fewer know of his son.

Like it or not, Obama is your future and those children are his life. Whatever they do impacts you, me, and this country – one way or another. So how about expanding your thinking process beyond your next beer or NASCAR event and wish these children long life and happiness?

hunter   January 5th, 2009 10:57 am ET

What is wrong with you all? After hearing about nothing but pain and suffering non-stop, it is nice to hear about something else for a change. If you don't like it I have some great advice…Just keep on scrollin.

Dexter   January 5th, 2009 10:56 am ET

Motorcade indeed, For the people on this post who are callous to the safty of these kids, this is the same protection you would want for your children if you were the President-Elect of the most powerful country on the planet.

Presient & President-Elect is an all expense paid job, get used to it, the Republican's did. Those kids are only in danger because of who their father is, this is the same protection you would want for your children if you were the President-Elect of the most powerful country on the planet.

jpi   January 5th, 2009 10:55 am ET

I find it quite amazing that Barack Obama refuses to support school choice…except when it's his own kids. How can he retain any credibility with saying he supports public education (and doesn't support vouchers) but yet sends his own children to private schools (instead of the "local" elementary school in Washington DC)? Baffling.

KONOTA abdoulaye   January 5th, 2009 10:54 am ET

I wish them all the best. May God, the Almighty protect these two little girls. Good luck to Obama.

Jessica   January 5th, 2009 10:54 am ET

I am not sure why this is news. The girls need as little attention as possible to attempt to live a semi-normal life!

DW   January 5th, 2009 10:54 am ET

Now hopefully the press and public can back off and give these girls a chance at a normal life or something close to it. And coming from a socalled "lefty", I'd urge the same hands off policy for the Palin family.

Judy   January 5th, 2009 10:53 am ET

who cares, let them be kids and stop all the bally who about them. Give them there space. Geez why not cover all kids first day at a new school, big deal. this is all you have of importance to report on. This is not news, it is a day in a life of kids attending a new school. Leave them a lone, they cant help there dad is going to be president and not around them much. He will be very busy with many many problems why not cover those major problems.

Sonya   January 5th, 2009 10:53 am ET

I wonder if these two girls will stand & recite the pledge of allegiance this morning or will they do as their father does? I know my son will say the pledege to our nation this morning as he does every morning, that's newsworthy.

Cammi317   January 5th, 2009 10:53 am ET

Wow a new state, a new school and two different campuses in two different states (albeit they are ajoining states). Talk about change.

banke vogt   January 5th, 2009 10:52 am ET

stop with the nonsense CNN, and allow these kids to grow up with a relatively normal life. There are millions of kids going back to school today why don't you report that. Please don't let me loose respect for you and start reporting NEWS and leave that family alone

Sue   January 5th, 2009 10:52 am ET

The media should leave these beautiful girls alone. Let them be normal kids…for sure not as "CNN BREAKING NEWS".
BACK OFF CNN !!!!!!!!!!!!!

stringer628   January 5th, 2009 10:52 am ET

Leigh, the difference is that all other kids going to school are NOT the children of the president-elect. It's been a while since children were in the White House – that's the news angle.

You must be a Republican. Chill out.

Ho Chi Daddy   January 5th, 2009 10:51 am ET

What folks on the "right" miss in this coverage, beyond the voyeurism, is Obama and his family represent an enormous of example for young black people, especially males, who don't have an immediate male role model. I say cover everything he does with his family in his capacity as a father. I'm a black man with a wife and young son. My son's getting the living, breathing example of manhood that I and many other black people missed for a good portion of our lives. Obama is the public face of my and other men's campaigns to be fathers to our children and positive role models in our community. Obviously, the rights can't fathom such a concept. Rock on and be strong, brother. We're with you.

This is great news. This is still history. These are not just regular children going to school. The same way we were bonbarded with the info on the Bush twins her in TX, we would like news about Sasha and Malia. They are American's kids now, like it or not. Can you imagine feeling like you are on top of the world with all those secret service people looking out for you. They are really in fantasy land. Let them enjoy it a little and stop being so critical. They are children liking the high life now. All the hoopla will die down in a bit and you can go back to reading books on hangs and lynching. Baze and Leigh

Will the kids first bowel movement in DC be chronicled?

JT   January 5th, 2009 10:49 am ET

I am SICK AND TIRED of all the hatred/racism that's being displayed on these blogs, this country is heading towards a major change and people need to just accept that it's time… let's accept the fact that we have a new President in the White House who just happens to be African American, it's time for change. Obama and his family deserves a chance just as all the former Presidents did, let's give him a chance…he deserves it.
If you don't think it's time for change, just look at where we are now compared to where we were eight years ago, let's move forward people. Stop the hatred/racism we are one country.

Vincent Petrosino   January 5th, 2009 10:49 am ET

Wow! Some of these comments are from some very short-sighted, mean-spirited fools! Of course, this is news. These young girls, daughters of the first African-American president, have been effected by this election as well. Anyone in education knows this can be traumatic, especially with each girl attending school on a different campus. But for people like Leigh, it is not the same as your children attending school or mine. Ask Chelsea Clinton! Remember the Obamas are loving parents who knew how important it was for their daughters to start school even before the inauguration. So they opted to live in a hotel before Blair House and the White House. This first family is one we can all be proud of and we educators can use as a model for others.

Sandy   January 5th, 2009 10:48 am ET

Excuse me, Mr. Rohde, are you talking about "your" pathological hatred? You're the one spewing it.

chefsupreme   January 5th, 2009 10:48 am ET

After Palin insulted most of us living in "Real America" perhaps we should forget her and her brood. Perhaps after her illegitimate grandchild was born, her family could demand privacy instead of telling us how "hard" parenting is for a pair of 18 year olds.

Larry   January 5th, 2009 10:47 am ET

Leigh, It should be crystal clear why security has to be beefed up! You have a Black President coming…get use to it !

Mary/Michigan   January 5th, 2009 10:47 am ET

Linda in MS   January 5th, 2009 10:43 am ET

Richard, you obviously only read some of the comments on these blogs. If you read them all, you would hopefully recognize the hatred many conservatives post every day about the Obama family, including their children. What hurts the most is the ugliness written about their physical appearance, which are obviously racial slurs. I agree that attacking anyone's family is just plain wrong, but it is happening on both sides here. Please take your blinders off.

CNN is losing it   January 5th, 2009 10:42 am ET

Why would we care about this?

Jack   January 5th, 2009 10:42 am ET

Let's set the tone now. Give these girls a chance at being little girls and stop posting thier lives on the internet, tv, etc. The bigs news is what the President is doing…..not his children. We all send our kids to school and that is simply a family matter.

sally Petri   January 5th, 2009 10:42 am ET

this is our first family – Can't we just be positive and wish them well – these girls are going through a lot of changes as well as Mom and Dad. This is a huge change in there lives. Richard Rhode….Maybe Sarah Palin and her promiscuous daughter should try to stay out of the news? With the recent report about "abstinence promises" and how they don't work and the rantings from the right about governmental forcing condoms and sex ed on students, maybe matress back Palin should have paid attention. Her mother is all about values but her daughter contradicts her

d1andonly   January 5th, 2009 10:39 am ET

I absolutely LOVE seeing this family! It fills me with pride, hope, and an extreme feeling of wholesomeness to see this wonderful protrayal of what the AMERICAN family looks like. I hope people of all ethnicities and nationalities realize that the media portrayal of black families isn't as it seems overall. The father-less, single parent households are but a small portion of any family PERIOD. Seeing this portrayal of family and love makes my husband and I proud that one day we too will have wonderful children to carry forth our values and morals. Thank you President-elect and First Lady Obama!!

Come on really, what is the deal. Every child goes to school. maybe the school should roll out the red carpet too.No wonder these girls can't live a normal life !! Why not do a story on the children who have nothing to eat before going to school or who don;t have a warm coat to wear to school of what about parents who could care less if their child even gets to school..

Jeff   January 5th, 2009 10:37 am ET

The Obama children have school choice. Regular people do not. Once again, an example of the Left's dumbing down of America.

I hope they will be comfortable in their new school and make new friends. The press has always covered all the past Presidents children in this manner. Why does the new first family be any different?
Now let them be children and grow up with wonderful memories of living in the White House.

Denise   January 5th, 2009 10:35 am ET

I agree this is not political news, but we finally have children in the White House, and that IS news. I am sure alot of citizens are VERY interested in the first kids, and wonder the same thing as I do..WHERE is the first dog???

Susan in Georgia   January 5th, 2009 10:35 am ET

My observation is directed to "Leigh's" post.

This is part of our history as a nation. I certainly didn't expect a Secret Service motorcade when my daughters started a new school, then again my husband was not the President-elect.

CNN does a fine job of bringing us the NEWS, Leigh, and such is the case with these darling girls embarking upon their new academic careers.

Lighten up Leigh.

There is no way that he would have been able to keep his children’s school top secret people. But believe me when I say that they will be surrounded by secret service. The school will be on lock down as I’m sure it already is. The average person (you and me) can’t just walk up in the school and go peek at them during the day. Those beautiful children will be well protected….
God bless the Obama family!

Nat Turner   January 5th, 2009 10:33 am ET

Thank you for giving this as much attention as you did the Bush girls pick for college and their drunken binges. It's nice to have refreshing news like this thrown in amongst the ravages of the Gaza bombs and the back peddling for Bush's legacy!

One would think that at this point, every thing that happens in the most historical presidential transition in the history of this country is news worthy.

Barbara in Palm Springs   January 5th, 2009 10:33 am ET

to richard rohde:

The Obama's do not have:
1. A son who had a choice of military service or jail for delinquent behavior
2. A teenage pregnancy that barely missed the statutory rape limits
3. A possible in-law under arrest for drug traffiking

So, please, let's not make any comparisons between the beautiful daughters of PE Obama and the Palin soap opera.

We'd all best work together to ensure the success of PE Obama and the new administration. God bless them all, including these lovely little girls.

Sammy   January 5th, 2009 10:33 am ET

Thats great that you have chosen a school best fit for your daughters however i think that all the information should not have been let out, its a lot of weido’s and psycho’s out here. Some one tried to get you, it may probably cause some problems for them, even though it might synch out anyway of their attendance of the school. Best wishes for Malia & Sasha and the entire Obama family.

The children attending school that is great, but I think you should leave the girls alone, let them try and have a normal life as hard as that will be. Let the ticker be on the President -Elect, or something equally important.

BUSH BEGONE, AND NOW 75% OF AMERICA AGREES, FINALLY!   January 5th, 2009 10:28 am ET

It is nice to have a family with young children again in the White House.

Brad   January 5th, 2009 10:28 am ET

Now that they have started school, I hope that the press leaves the kids alone. They have enough to deal with.

New Yorker   January 5th, 2009 10:28 am ET

Baze, Who cares? All the tabloid reading voters who helped elect Obama! C'mon give them a break; this is BIG!

Jessca   January 5th, 2009 10:28 am ET

I really hope these girls grow up to be decent role models. There are so few of them out there….in fact I can't even think of one.

Ambrose Smith, Borrego Springs, California   January 5th, 2009 10:28 am ET

If you don't "care" about the article or think "this isn't news!"–then move along to something else.

It's called a human interest story.

Armchair editors!

Nancy   January 5th, 2009 10:27 am ET

Oh those sweet girls! What an exciting yet scary time it must be for this family. I bet they are feeling the weight of the world on their shoulders today.

Tina   January 5th, 2009 10:27 am ET

My 3 boys all went back to school today too!! The oldest went in his 91 Pathfinder…the middle son in a Ford Truck & my youngest went on that big yellow thing called a school bus!!! Now thats news!

This is Change   January 5th, 2009 10:27 am ET

A REAL family…actually human.

GOB Bless the Obamas!

Eric the hedge fund manager, Ann Arbor, MI   January 5th, 2009 10:27 am ET

If they believe in their "big government" and that government can and should do everything for everybody, they should have put their kids in public schools. Such hypocrites!

It is interesting to see how mushy nice the liberal press is to anything relating to Obama. Do you think this will stop when he ends up being "another Jimmy Carter?"

timmy hollis - G. R. MI.   January 5th, 2009 10:27 am ET

I like to know whats going on with our First "Black" Family. This is news, history and interesting to me. So all you haters, since you want to hate, keep hating!! I lmao at ya!!

carol   January 5th, 2009 10:26 am ET

Still such hateful people on this site, this is news worthy they are our new President's daughters and deserve recognition, we had to endure seeing Palin's kids being dragged around during the campaign, but I suppose that was alright!!

NEL E BELL   January 5th, 2009 10:26 am ET

STOP THE PRESSES, JUST IN, JUST HAD PEANUT BUTTER AND JELLY FOR LUNCH, OOPS, THATS FOR PUBLIC SCHOOLS. THEY JUST HAD CATERED PEANUT BUTTER AND JELLY BRUNCH.

AND THIS IS NEWS? ANOTHER SOFTBALL FROM THE PRESS.

Supporter from NC   January 5th, 2009 10:26 am ET

How about working on my grammar, I'm sure it more than they want us to know.

Danielle   January 5th, 2009 10:26 am ET

Richard Rohde, perhaps if Palin would not sell her grandchild's photos to People magazine and stop making statements putting her family in the press, no one would have anything to say.

Ted   January 5th, 2009 10:26 am ET

Well another vote for public education

luke   January 5th, 2009 10:26 am ET

I pray for protection, peace and security over the First Family. This is such a historic moment in history, but as always we know that there are still a lot of haters out there. The Obama’s administration and personnel need to be very careful in terms of what is devulged about the first family’s daily lives. May the Lord our God protect them always.

New Yorker   January 5th, 2009 10:25 am ET

Elizabeth in Texas, Guess how many times our military personnels' children have to change schools? And, generally, they don't have the big bucks to help ease the transition. Top that off with the lack of respect and support they should get from civilians and that will give you even more to pray about. Obama's two girls have it made in the shade; they will be just fine, BUT this is NOT the kind of "CHANGE" he has in store for the rest of the country. Maybe you could pray about that too.

giggey43   January 5th, 2009 10:25 am ET

While those 2 girls are cute and seem to be sweet I really don't think they are worthy of major news….The economy is uppermost in my mind and can he and Congress fix it…

Obaman – role models??? good grief they haven't even helped our country yet. Getting the horse before the cart aren't you?????

Debby   January 5th, 2009 10:25 am ET

I hardly ever heard about Bush girls while in office. I am more concerned about the economy and where Obama is going with it vs. his kids first day at school.

DK   January 5th, 2009 10:24 am ET

I pray that these children are treated with the same respect as every other child in the school and otherwise. God bless the FIRST AFRICAN AMERICAN FAMILY!'A Change Done Come!'

Joanna   January 5th, 2009 10:24 am ET

I love seeing this family.

Nice Girl   January 5th, 2009 10:24 am ET

THIS IS GREAT NEWS….good luck Malia and Sasha!

Synde75   January 5th, 2009 10:24 am ET

It's the most elite school in the DC area, so much for improving, the public schools. Even home schooling would have saved us money.

Shari, NY   January 5th, 2009 10:24 am ET

I wish them well and now it is time to leave them to learn and adjust in peace. Watch for the day following Bush's much heralded departure. Blogging will be next to impossible

megan   January 5th, 2009 10:23 am ET

Keep those girls in PRAYER

tweetygale   January 5th, 2009 10:23 am ET

Like previous children that resided in the white house, I am glad that they are attending school. I am not sure if this was news worthy material, but I am sure this is a big adjustment for them two. I wish them luck and hope they have a great day at school.

Carol   January 5th, 2009 10:23 am ET

I wish the Obama's well in the next 4 years. The girls will have the biggest transition change because they are so young. But with a great caring mother like Michele, they will also will do well.

For the rest of you that have nothing good to say – I suggest you redirect your energy and anger at your own life and try to "change" that. It's people like you that cause the world to be like it is. Just try once to do something nice for a someone as see how great you can feel inside.

jj   January 5th, 2009 10:22 am ET

No other children have a dad that's the president elect of the US. That's why this is news. Hello?

WowInNJ   January 5th, 2009 10:22 am ET

You people are so friggin bitter!

No, this isn't major news…it isn't meant to be…it's a nice cute fluff piece and that's the point.

Folks, it's OK to not have every story be some huge weighty affair…live is about the little moments as much as the grand big picture. I, for one, had a little smile thinking about the Obamas being like every family in America and ferrying their kids back to school after Christmas break.

david   January 5th, 2009 10:22 am ET

I trust that God will protect these kids. People, don’t be fooled the CIA has everything under control. If anyone even thinks something crazy torward Obama or his kids, they will be taken out (believe that)!

Poor Judgement   January 5th, 2009 10:22 am ET

You can say whatever you want about the Bill and Hillary Clinton. I don't recall that they "released" pictures of their daughters.

It was in poor taste over the summer that the girls were interviewed for a tacky television show and I believe this is in poor taste as well.

How much are we going to hear of the girls when poll numbers are sagging and when the Obama Administration want to change the subject. I don't question the love they have for their children, but I do question this image that they are so desperately trying to create, "Obamalot" as Michelle Obama has described.

Former Republican   January 5th, 2009 10:22 am ET

I guess the Obama haters would prefer reading about Britney Spears and Lindsay Lohan, America's nitwits.

Cris   January 5th, 2009 10:22 am ET

Who cares…and why is this news?

sibyl   January 5th, 2009 10:21 am ET

Thanks for the update. Some parents in this country need to see
what parental involvement looks like. If everyone did this the world
would be a better place.

Jennifer B   January 5th, 2009 10:21 am ET

Richard you're being quite niave, if you arguing that members of the right never said extremely ugly things about Obama and his family. And believe me Palin's family was handled with kid gloves, if one of Obama's girl's had been pregnant, there would have been all kinds of racist, welfare remarks.

The bulk of attacks against Palin were over her obssession with JUST

brain   January 5th, 2009 10:21 am ET

Obama is the President of the United States. He and his family will be under the public eye. Notice that is was Michelle Obama’s spokeswoman who informed the press of the decision. Obama has mentioned time and time again that he wants his girls lives to be as normal as possible–I believe that he and Michelle will do just that. Instead of worrying that something is going to happen, be happy that the Obama’s found a school that good their little girls. Now for the puppy…

MissyRiver   January 5th, 2009 10:21 am ET

I know that it has to be a three ring circus getting these girls to and from school with all the security that they have to have. I am not sure that I would want everyone to know what school that they are attending, I wish them both luck.

William A. Schaedler from St. Louis   January 5th, 2009 10:20 am ET

You forgot to tell us what they wore and did they buy their lunch or pack it in a brown bag.

karen-phoenix   January 5th, 2009 10:20 am ET

I've been a republican for over 40 years but voted and pray for Obama. Lefties are more mainstream than you can imagine and republicans had better start realizing that!!! I finnally did. Obama, his wife and Biden are all highly educated people!!! Masters and doctorate degrees!!! Their kids are and will be highly educated and set a great example for American kids. This is NOT true of Palin's kids or Palin herself!!! Just the trueth. And Palin and her kids are NOT the example I want for my grandkids!!!

TexAnnie *-*-*-*-*   January 5th, 2009 10:20 am ET

All you people who keep posting "who cares", etc.— well, obviously YOU cared enough to read the story and make a comment.

The media has posted stories about the children of presidents for as long as I can remember. They trailed poor Amy Carter around like hunting dogs. And they trailed the Clinton's daughter until the Clintons finally begged them to give her a break. Probably the Bush daughters got off the lightest. Once their drinking & arrest stories were making headlines, George W. declared war on the press and they backed off and you never heard another word about those girls until it was marrying time. (George W. had a knack for liking to eep things secret, didn't he?)

Once the Obamas are in the White House, they may be able to control access to their girls better, but in the meantime, the press is going to cover them. Personally, I'd rather read something about those girls than all the negative cr** you otherwise see in the press.

So, grow up. Deal with it. If you don't want to read about them, then don't read the story. Nobody is forcing you to read it, you know.

Sally   January 5th, 2009 10:20 am ET

Charming jhuman interest story, but I have to agree with Nebraskan. Is this really a poltical ticker story?

Supporter from NC   January 5th, 2009 10:20 am ET

This isn't news, but they will be the first family in 15 days and we will get information about them than we ever wanted to know and I sure more than they want us to know. This is a big change and I wish the girls luck.

Matthew   January 5th, 2009 10:19 am ET

It doesn't set a good precedent for expecting the media to respect your children's privacy when you invite photographers into your hotel suite to document their first day at school. What is he thinking? This is just as bad as when he impulsively allowed them to be interviewed on Access Hollywood back in July. Bad judgment all around!

JM   January 5th, 2009 10:19 am ET

Richard Rohde, nicely said.

Brown   January 5th, 2009 10:18 am ET

I think for now on, ,what the Obama’s do in there lifes need to be privacy for security reason. Obama family stop telling them your every move.
I wish those gals well!

Ohioan   January 5th, 2009 10:18 am ET

Very influential parents these girls have! The Obamas are truly "the American way!" This is news just like it is reported when children all over the country return to school, especially since the country is watching the Obama family! May God be with the entire Obama family!

rachel   January 5th, 2009 10:17 am ET

Thanks CNN! Wonderful seeing these little ladies going off to their first day of school!

joe   January 5th, 2009 10:17 am ET

Agrees with Ms B. This is way too much info to give out to the crazie’s out there who have not yet gotten use to the idea of the big 'CHANGE'.

Kenneth M. of Flushing Queens   January 5th, 2009 10:17 am ET

If you don't think this is news do what the conservatives would do. Read something else. Oh I forgot, there are no more conservatives, only slaves to the GOP.

PC from Jamaica   January 5th, 2009 10:17 am ET

Leigh – This is news worthy because they are Barack's children.
Had it been something negative, I bet you would find it news worthy.

This IS News because these children are of our soon to be new President. They are important whether you like it or not. You seem to have some difficulties getting over the fact that Obama won the election… Grow up and enjoy the fact that he IS our soon to be President!

Judith   January 5th, 2009 10:15 am ET

Of course it's news. Maybe not political ticker news, but news.

Nice choice of schools (my daughter graduated from a Quaker college, so I'm biased). It's another declaration of the Obama's core values.

Good luck to the girl’s at new school. That was a good choice for your parent’s to decide for the girl’s to do for school.

Looking for Truth   January 5th, 2009 10:14 am ET

I could care less. These are two children that are going to private schools and have all the finest things in life, they will be fine. Our world is coming apart at the seams. I know that there is only one president at a time, but i would like to know Obamas' position on the Gaza strip, He so handily talks a lot of crap on unimportant issues that only one president can do. So what say you Barack Hussien Obama

debra from Georgia   January 5th, 2009 10:14 am ET

Have a great day girls, and good luck on your first day at a new school. Now PE, you have work to do, sell that economic stimulus package to those out of touch Republicans.

Jack in Florida   January 5th, 2009 10:13 am ET

That is great! Now leave them alone and let them be normal little girls off to a new school.

Best wishes Sasha and Malia………hope you make nice new friends!

Trying thinking on your own.

Oh! The Irony   January 5th, 2009 10:12 am ET

Gotta love the Obama haters. At times I feel so sorry for you and the bitterness you have within you. For those that are begging for "real news" stories, you should check the "news" section. This is a Political Ticker and obviously entries are wideranging within the political field.

Mike   January 5th, 2009 10:11 am ET

Of course this is news! It's funny how right-wingers don't think this is news because it's a Dem family.

Good luck to them. Being in the spotlight, especially this young has got to be tough!!!

Ed R   January 5th, 2009 10:10 am ET

This is not news. Stop acting like paparazzi and go find some real news. No matter the identity of their father – they are children and deserve some privacy.

SAD SAD   January 5th, 2009 10:09 am ET

For those that are still filled with hatred for the Obamas. get over it already you will get used to it at least in the next 4 to 8 yrs. Bush's daughter got wedded and it made the news …did you guys complain?
Bristol Palin had a baby and it made the news(250k that she collected for the baby pics didnt make the news) did u complain. This shows how divided this country is and the people who are still in the pre-election mindset. The Obamas are here to stay!

LadyJustice   January 5th, 2009 10:09 am ET

Now if I recall when Clinton was President, they gave a play by play of Chelsa's activities. President Carter daughter got the same treatment. You can't or haven't digest that these are the children of the President of the United States. They will get special attention; You got to deal with it for at least 4 years. Take your medication to keep your nerves calm.

SC   January 5th, 2009 10:09 am ET

Sasha and Malia are news…just like Amy Carter, just like Chelsea Clinton…and just like EVERY OTHER PRESIDENT'S CHILDREN have been news.

It simply goes with the territory.

So, to all of those 'why is this news', 'big deal', 'is this really worthy of the ticker' commenters….let it go.

Terrance Craion   January 5th, 2009 10:08 am ET

Dear Baze
We should all care for the well being and welfare of any child and to Nebraskan ANYTHING the first family does is going to be news. I wish the Obamas the best of luck because their are many transitions ahead of them, may the Lord bless them and keep them safe.

Detroit, MI

Change - Yeah Left   January 5th, 2009 10:08 am ET

I feel for the girls – changing schools mid-year. But I have to ask if it had been a different party that won – would the libs be as friendly or would they do nothing but bash and hate?

Based on what I've seen on other ticker posts – I know my answer – let's all hate on the conservatives.

The children don't deserve hate!

Barb   January 5th, 2009 10:08 am ET

Too bad they could go to the ame campus. But Sasha seems like a very social person, I hope they will enjoy their new adventure. The Obama family has my love and prayers. I hope our new President gets the kind of support he will need to fix the horrible problems we have. He can't do it alone, that's for sure.

Paula   January 5th, 2009 10:07 am ET

Given that most other stories are about a) bernie madoff knowingly cheating honest folks out of millions; b) the mideast conflict which is costing many lives and c) how our incompetent and corrupt politicians can't get along and work to solve some serious issues, i would take this story anyday.

Regular Joanne   January 5th, 2009 10:07 am ET

I know not real news. But still so nice to see. Now the press needs to back off and let them grow in private.

obama-mama   January 5th, 2009 10:07 am ET

Boy I am excited….Sounds like the girls will be traveling a lot each day to and from school…..Lord please keep them safe.

Michell and PEBO – way to show support for the Public School System and to demonstrate your understanding and commitment to CHANGE – send your two children to a Private School – Real Cool.

Maxine Wisconsin   January 5th, 2009 10:06 am ET

Hey Leigh
dont be hatin'…. this is news & History in the making. I'm still anticipating a lot of people doing a lot of rubber necking when they see two Black Girls playing on the White House Lawn. They are some precious beautiful little girls. The Obama family is a model of what families are all about. When momma and daddy participate in those meaningful things in children's lives. Not sneakers, Ipods and money… but presence. People take note.

Carlos   January 5th, 2009 10:06 am ET

Looks like they can keep the President Elect occupied. How refreshing

Linda   January 5th, 2009 10:05 am ET

So please tell me what's not to love about this precious family.
Get out of the 50's & 60's time period and act as if you are sane…. even tho it shows you are not. Too bad your Mother and Dad taught you to hate. Do you always do as your parents said… if so, make an improvement on your generation and stop being mean. Obama is our Predisent, like it or not.
If anything bad happens to he or his family – you will be partly to blame….think about it!!!!

Disgusted   January 5th, 2009 10:04 am ET

The real story is that Obama had the gall to ask Bush to move out early because his kids had to start school and they need a place to stay. Like the current leader of the free world (albeit a short timer, he is still in charge) all of a sudden would pack up and move his whole operation for two weeks so Obama doesn't have to live in a hotel for a bit.

Carl Dupont   January 5th, 2009 10:04 am ET

Mr. Obama please don't push your children in the media spotlight, it will hurt them in the long run.

Later you will be complaining about the media not leaving your children and family alone, however, you will have no one to blame but yourself for promoting your daughters as celebrities.

You have won the election and no longer need to act like the movie star family.

FRED SOMERS SR   January 5th, 2009 10:02 am ET

I am concerned about the Safety of children of President elect.

The video showing the children in a SUV heading to school today, it appears that the youngest child is facing towards the rear of the vehicle, indicating that she is not is a seat belt???

TCM   January 5th, 2009 10:02 am ET

Obaman, if they're the role models for the nation, we're in trouble…..racism running rampant through their past, and their very presence increases racial tensions….that coupled with their inexperience will set the country back 10 years.

MaryanneAZ   January 5th, 2009 10:02 am ET

God's richest blessing on the new First Family as they begin their new lives in D.C. It is such a difficult thing to start in a new school, especially when you are 7 and 10. I sure wish Americans would give this family a break and appreciate what turmoil these little girls are going through. They are not even old enough to understand the role they now have and play in the national spotlight. I've seen such hateful comments about them, their clothes, their hair, etc. Please people remember these are just two little girls who are along for the ride and they are no one's enemies and do not deserve such nastiness and criticism. Again, God please bless these precious girls and protect them from the hatred and bigotry of our free Nation. Please donate to your local food bank. Make a difference!

Louis   January 5th, 2009 10:01 am ET

Leigh — chill out! Geez, someone woke up on the wrong side of the Senate aisle, didn't they?! They're the children of the President of the United States — it IS news when they arrive in town and go to their new school for the first time. Do you t think the principal, teachers, students and parents of those Sidwell Friends campuses are gonna carry on the day "like any other" day? NOT!! Someone — LEIGH — is a bit out of touch . . . or just bitter . . . Oops! Did I say "bitter"?

Gail   January 5th, 2009 10:01 am ET

Welcome Obama Girls! You are both adorable and will be a great role model for all young girls no matter what race.

Good Luck to President Obama and First Lady Michelle. You are both an inspiration to our Nation.

Pat   January 5th, 2009 10:00 am ET

Going to a private school. The millionaire Obama sends his children to a private school while telling the rest of us to send our children to the 3rd world public education system. Another case of do as I say not as I do.

BB   January 5th, 2009 9:57 am ET

Richard Rohde – you appear to be in need of psychological monitoring and possibly meds to control your negativity. Please get this year off to a better start for yourself and your family.

Funny that the "common man's" president chose to send his kids to a private school. How's that for "change?"

Virginia   January 5th, 2009 9:55 am ET

Did grandma drive them?????? Not on your life, like Michelle thought she would. Grandma won't be doing anything like that–Secret Service will be on them like we can't imagine. I don't like Obama, but I feel sorry for these girls to be put in this huge fish bowl they call DC life. I hope someone in the White House keeps them grounded and safe–Mom and dad have their heads in the clouds or elsewhere……

They should protect their young girls from the media instead of promoting their celebrity status.

I hope, seperated by campuses for a year or two, won't result in any form of anxiety for Malia and Sasha. I'd imagine the different locations was a topic of discussion in the household and no doubt both parents worked very hard to dispel any fears.

micheal   January 5th, 2009 9:52 am ET

I remember what it was like to go to a new school, and even if they are the "First Children" and it seems all on top of the world for them, I know this is a stressful day for them.

Good Luck to these two cute little girls, hope they enjoy their new school and make some nice new friends.

HI GIRLS, I JUST WANTED TO LET YOU KNOW THAT YOU ARE SPECIAL, KEEP YOUR HEADS UP HIGH, AND BE ALL THAT THE WORLD KNOW YOU CAN BE. YOU HAVE GREAT PARENTS AND THAT ALONE, REGARDLESS IF THEY ARE PRESIDENT AND FIRST LADY YOU GUYS ARE LUCKY TO HAVE PARENTS LIKE THAT

Leigh   January 5th, 2009 9:48 am ET

And how is this news?? They go to school like anyone else's children, albeit an expansive motorcade, etc. I don't see the attention bestowed anyone else's children on their way to school as most of the time, children of all ages love going to school on their first day.

Wish them well in their new adventure..now the press needs to back off and give them privacy so they can enjoy their new school and friends,

Nice family and I hope a great President. Happy New year to All!

I cannot imagine what a emotional change these girls are going through and how nervous they are today. I bet Michelle is even more nervous for thos precious girls.

I am praying for this family.

Obaman   January 5th, 2009 9:46 am ET

Obama and Michelle are real role models for the nation. May the Lord help them!

Robin   January 5th, 2009 9:46 am ET

The girls are great and will do fine.

Is this really worthy of being on the POLITICAL ticker? Telling where these girls are going to school, when they start, etc.?

richard rohde   January 5th, 2009 9:43 am ET

As much as I am uncomfortable with PEBO, I certainly would not even dream of attacking his family or saying anything derogatory about them. Maybe the lefties could leave Palin's family alone, but then again that will never happen. It's the difference between honest diagreement and pathological hatred and the the lefties are demented.
