The Neighborhood Inaugural Ball will take place at the Washington Convention Center, pictured above.

(CNN) – The Obama inauguration committee announced Monday that the president-elect will host the first "Neighborhood Inaugural Ball,” a celebration they’re plugging as the night’s “premier event.”

Tickets for the ball will be free or sold at reduced prices, according to the committee. The event will be held at the Washington Convention Center, with a bloc of tickets reserved for the city’s residents.

"This is an Inauguration for all Americans," the president-elect said in a statement released by the committee this morning. "I wanted to make sure that we had an event that would be open to our new neighborhood here in Washington, D.C., and also neighborhoods across the country. Michelle and I look forward to joining our fellow Americans across the country during this very special event."

The event will also be broadcast over the Web, with an interactive element for those unable to attend in person that will link the celebration to neighborhood balls across the country. The committee said further information about ticket distribution would be released shortly.

To TCM:

What a sore loser! Obama "barely" won the popular vote? What planet have you been on? Lazy lib slackers and ACORN? Perhaps, TCM, you should read how YOUR candidate supported ACORN right down the line. Again, I repeat, you must be a sore loser. There are many people out there that are proud to have someone new in the White House with new ideas as opposed to the same old whining by people like you concerning handouts...there have been handouts...TO THE RICH.

TCM   January 5th, 2009 5:00 pm ET

JIM – you're so right. Out of all the things that flew around during the election; one of the major reasons I'd never vote for this guy is his refusal to visit our wounded trips during his ONE overseas trip, unless the media could accompany him and photograph him....what a loser! That's spitting in the face of our military personnel...not one of them should have voted for him.

TCM   January 5th, 2009 4:54 pm ET

H-Rod, do you know that more money is spent on illegals than on the war? Also, Cammander is spelled Commander, and hiest is spelled heist.....Finally, to further show you're ignorant, had Bush not taken the war to them, they'd have executed further terrorist attacks on our soil....so, any and all of you libs that think Bush did wrong, perhaps he did in many areas, however, he's kept our soil safe. Obama wants to "negotiate," with terrorists. What he fails to realize is it's about religion, and they're radicals...sorta like ACORN folks; there's no rationalizing with them. You're going to reap what you've sown; and soon we'll have further economic problems, social divide, and will look ripe for the picking for encroaching countries....such idiots liberals are; endangering us all, even their own children, for the cause of their own selfishness....

Alice Cravens   January 5th, 2009 4:47 pm ET

I will now gladly make my contribution to the expected (and soon to be regulated) American suffering by having my TV cable and Internet unplugged for the next 4 years. This will make Obama/Biden happy that I have saved so much money by not watching them on TV or reading CNN articles about the wonders they will surely perform.

TCM   January 5th, 2009 4:46 pm ET

jean in MN – something concrete? Well, they've come up with plenty and the media, along with the corrupt regime of Obama have suppressed all contra Obama stories....you idiot libs will regret the day, don't worry. So many stupid people in this country, it's ashame one soldier had to die to defend such ignorance as you liberal morons display here.....

By the way, JEAN, where will the money come from when tax cuts are made...to pay the bills the taxes were paying? You libs can't see past the end of your entitlement noses...Obama's going to tax and spend this country into divide...get ready....I am.

Linda in MS   January 5th, 2009 4:28 pm ET

To TCM: Same old crappy hateful drivel, new day. Don't you know you sound like a scratched record? Why do you persist in repeating the same inane comments over and over again? Every liberal I know, including myself and my husband, have jobs or careers, pay taxes, donate to charity groups. Most of the liberals I know have college degrees, and many have post-graduate degrees as well. You are pathetic.

Kevin B   January 5th, 2009 4:20 pm ET

TCM-The folks you state are waiting for entitlements" are not the ones you need to loose sleep over. It is the one's that have busy robbing us of our 401k value and the banks and insurance companys getting tons 'o' cash from the current administration.

"We are not a red america, or a blue america, we are the United States of America" BHO.

The quote above; is the real essence of what our founding fathers created.

You couldn't pay me to go to this ghetto event. Ugh...the thought of him as President makes me ill. This man is NOT by any means qualified for this job.

DAVE IN CA   January 5th, 2009 3:49 pm ET

who the hell is going to pay for all this crap....... with such a financial crisis we are in the middle of how much of this bill is the tax payer going to pay for..... i guess the second coming of JESUS is among us.... i think his good buddy OPRAH should forgo buying her house in D.C. and use that money to pay for this fiasco..

THE OLD TIMER   January 5th, 2009 3:39 pm ET

Who would watch this guy get sworn in,,,, Maybe just to watch and see what will happen on this dreadful night in the history of the U S A

Maggie from Virginia   January 5th, 2009 3:39 pm ET

The closer we get to the inauguration, the nastier the nay-sayers get. This is absolutely hilarious.

Jerry   January 5th, 2009 3:37 pm ET

Jim obviously missed the story that the Commander-in-Chief ball was one of the first balls the Transition team confirmed that PE Obama would be attending .. and that he would be inviting hundreds of service personnel, wounded warriors and military family members to attend.

If you're going to carp about Obama's supposed slights, at least get your story right. Or are you just sore that you didn't get an invitation?

Hammer   January 5th, 2009 3:33 pm ET

The world is falling down arounr our ears and they are worried about a "gala inauguration". Really concerned about the state of affairs.

H-ROD   January 5th, 2009 3:26 pm ET

BUSH WAS A FAKE CAMMANDER IN CHIEF ALL HE DID WAS GET A LOT BRAVE YOUNG MEN AND WOMEM KILLED FOR NO REASON IN IN THE WORLDS BIGGEST HIEST THE BIGGEST STICKUP OF ALL TIME!!! OBAMA KEEP YOUR PROMISE AND BRING THOSE TROOPS HOME GET THEM OUT OF THERE AS FAST AS YOU CAN ONE BILLION A WEEK AND COUNTING

Chris in MI   January 5th, 2009 3:25 pm ET

TCM...Boy, you sure know how to put a damper on things. Get over it. It's the inauguration, we have one every 4yrs, it's a big celebration and alot of money is spent putting it together. So take your meds, curl up in a fetal position in the corner and wait until when you have something to complain about. For God's sake, the man hasn't even taken the oath yet! Some of you people are so depressing! Lighten up!
And Mike from Syracuse, NY...What a stupid, racist comment.

Barbara in Louisiana   January 5th, 2009 3:20 pm ET

Rev. Warren has been talked about as "a best selling author". I have his book THE PURPOSE DRIVEN. Guess what, I did not go to a book store and purchase it. I was contacted by phone by a religious group (his?) and offered the book free, not even shipping charges. It is time we get smart and start asking who, when, where and why again! And as to Jeb Bush running for President – I lived in Florida for 7 years, it was a pleasure to see him and the crook E. Clay Shaw voted out.

Susie   January 5th, 2009 3:14 pm ET

TCM, In case you hadn't noticed, George Bush never worked a day in his life for anything. He got into college on his name, made C's, avoided the military, was given a baseball team and oil company which he ruined, ran for Governor, was GIVEN the Presidency by the Supreme Court after LOSING the popular vote, was again given the Presidency due to voting irregularities in Ohio that Kerry chose not to challenge...and you're whining about Obama?
I pay my bills on time too, but I have empathy for those folks whose jobs are gone and are struggling. No one is GIVING away your tax dollars except GWB, who is squandering all our money in Iraq. Be mad at HIM.

I understand this is a big deal   January 5th, 2009 3:06 pm ET

but I am not really getting into this, there is really too much to do, but celebrate as we go and remember to celebrate the accomplishments as we go, we have as a country a lot of mess to fix from the Bush years

Denise....Boardman, Ohio   January 5th, 2009 3:05 pm ET

TCM....

Do you understand that President Obama was NOT the one who got the Nation into the economic mess so anything that he does to try to resolve this mess should be applauded by all Americans...until PE Obama does something that incurs your wrath, why don't you try to at least be quiet....President Bush has NOT said or did anything in the last 6(six) months to try and help RESOLVE this National crisis, AND HE IS PRESIDENT!!!!!! Bush & Co., have known for years that this crisis was approaching and have sat back and watched and LIED about the "fundalmentals of our economy" saying that it "is strong"...if you are angry at anyone, you should be angry at President Bush & his Republican "sidekicks"....but guess what, that would be too much like "right" for you blinded mice to do, now wouldn't it?

Mississippi Girl   January 5th, 2009 3:04 pm ET

To TCM, If your forefathers would be ashamed of what has happened to this country, who would the be ASHAMED of: Certainly you don't blame President Elect Obama? you idiot. If he is ousted as you say in 4 years and you get your GOPback in then and only then will your forefathers truly be afraid.

forrest kimbrough   January 5th, 2009 3:03 pm ET

while bush was in office it was nothing but praise as he used the constitution for toilet paper and sat back and watched the country go down the tubes........so now it's cheap racist remarks and can't quite figure out how to get a republican in any office..keep crying it is working great for the dems

Jim   January 5th, 2009 2:57 pm ET

It's really too bad that Obamna doesn't considering honoring the military as that important, since they're snubbing the "Commander-in-Chief's Ball", dedicated to our armed forces. Apparently they're not longer "premier" enough for the Obamas.

flybyshoeing   January 5th, 2009 2:56 pm ET

TCM, you must have missed the story about the Bush Secretary of the Interior that just spent 245,000.00 of your tax dollars to redo his office bathroom which include a refrigerator, freezer, imported tile and wood panneling.

Denise....Boardman, Ohio   January 5th, 2009 2:50 pm ET

Mike, Syracuse, NY:
Some of your comments show the reason why the Republican Party is so deep in the "toilet" that using a plunger would only pull up more "shlt"...get a life...the way things are today, not only will they need medal detectors for this event, he will probably need them for all his events...with all the dead of night "white sheet" wearers crawling out from under their rocks, he will undoubtedly feel more secure in this situation surrounded by "folks" that need medal detectors. He probably wouldn't be safe walking around in a room full of your kind of folks, which by the way you are talking, are polite "white sheet wearing" southern "gentlemen" who have a perverted and racist view of people who do not look or sound like themselves....

Ken in NC   January 5th, 2009 2:48 pm ET

@TCM,
A win does not go in the books as "BARELY WON THE ELECTIO". It goes in the books as a WIN or a LOSS. Pres Elect Obama will not BARELY be a President. He will not Barely be a world leader. He will not BARLEY be your President. HE WILL BE THE PRESIDENT of the UNITED STATES of AMERICA.

Get over it TCM. Everyone did not vote for him but he IS going to be the President of all and that includes you so why don't you join others that voted and didn't vote for him as we try to turn this nation around to get us out of this mess we are in. If you cannot do that at the least you might sit quietly on the side lines and allow others of us to make an effort to turn around this nation.

Linda32   January 5th, 2009 2:34 pm ET

Mike, its sounds like you haven't been to DC in a long while. Don't hate because Obama is opening this up to the public......you know the people he works for.

jean in MN   January 5th, 2009 2:32 pm ET

Give it up TCM et al. Why don't all you nuts wait until you actually have something concrete to gripe about? Although I do not expect that we will ever hear anything positive from you if Obama's tax cuts, etc. POSITIVELY affect you, your employer, state or this country.

a new year   January 5th, 2009 2:30 pm ET

i don't think a 500 dollar tax cut will do much good to fix our economy, it's not even a bandaid, it's more like pouring iodine on the cut, it only makes it hurt worse. have fun at all your parties.

You might want to rethink your statement, TCM.

Mr. Obama won the popular vote by nearly 10 million votes, it was the 6th largest margin of vitory in the history of the country. Pretty good, in everyone's opinion.Try again in EIGHT years, best of luck.

HelpTheAmericanPeople   January 5th, 2009 1:51 pm ET

Its about Time and TCM go stick your head in a hole and stay their with your anti Obama comments .
You GOPers of the Rightwing lost this election.

People in this country work hard for the moeny and Obama is not giving anyone a handout .

In other countries Like Sweden or Denmark working people have more paid vacation time called Holidays.

The Govenment actually pays people to take Holidays what a great idea instead of spending billions of dollars on Was like Bush did.

TCM Bush supported Wall Street over Main Street enough is enough.

Wake up the World is changing and Obama is our next President and four years from now will again be our President.

TCM   January 5th, 2009 1:30 pm ET

Wrong, Obama. It's not a night for all Americans. You barely won the popular vote, and in 4 yrs when you're ousted, that will be a night for all Americans. For the Americans who worked and saved and paid their bills, as respectable citizens do, its a sad occasion when the lazy lib slackers of this country create a big enough wave of corruption, via ACORN, to allow someone in the White House that wants to provide entitlements to the extent it will break the back of the country...what happened to initiative? Working for a living? Making your own way? Instead of sitting back and waiting for the government handout? Our forefathers would be ashamed of what this country's become.

Obama needs to include taking away tax incentives (or just charging them some how) from companies who ship existing American jobs overseas. Some American companies have gone buck wild about using cheaper overseas labor. I understand the right to make more money, but American companies need to also become more patriotic about keeping Americans employed here and letting some of that always fighting to increase net income go.

Betty Phillips   January 5th, 2009 1:17 pm ET

Jeff in Illinois   January 5th, 2009 1:08 pm ET

I wonder if all of the $20-50k income range Republicans are going to be upset about the $500 tax credit Obama is proposing, since it benefits individuals, instead of the extremely wealthy. Normally, these people are only supportive of those who make decisions against their interests.
