Wamp is running for governor of Tennessee.

(CNN) - Tennessee Rep. Zach Wamp, a Republican, announced Monday he is entering his state's 2010 gubernatorial race.

The announcement comes one day after former Senate Majority Leader Bill Frist, also a Republican from Tennessee, said he was not interested in the job.

"While so much is good in Tennessee, I know in my heart we can continue to do better. From education, economic development, infrastructure and transportation to safer cities and healthier children, I will lead our state with vision, planning and implementation while setting goals and achieving results for a better Tennessee," Wamp said in a statement posted on his Web site.

Wamp has served in Congress since 1995 and represents Tennessee's 3rd district, which covers a north-south strip of the eastern part of the state and includes Chattanooga. In November, he was reelected with nearly 70 percent of the vote.

The current Tennessee governor, Democrat Phil Bredesen, is unable to run again due to term limits.

Wow, it is very interesting how the negative things people come up with are about his name, that is mature

Denver Dem   January 5th, 2009 6:23 pm ET

Wamp huh? How many of you willing to bet he is just as racists as other white males from the Tennessee region? Nothing progressive about that hick state. Take your Elvis and your Nashvilles and stick it. Now that is what I think of a rube state like Tennessee

FreeNLovIt   January 5th, 2009 6:09 pm ET

Where were you in the past eight years to ask for such great visions?

FreeNLovIt   January 5th, 2009 6:08 pm ET

I need to say UNITY, but in thinking about it, NONE of the RED States DESERVE any money to help their states. They didnt vote for Obama. Let self-help APPLY TO them!!!

Paul C.   January 5th, 2009 5:02 pm ET

LOL, that is one funny name! Almost like SWAMP! ahhaha. Probably another mindless drone who will inspire mindless morons like "The Truth". hehehe hey truth! Keep the tin foil hat on there pal! Yes, let's be a good rightie and break unions ( eliminate health care for workers, paying them a fair wage ) and be a traitor to the American people by selling us out and giving major tax breaks to FOREIGN companies. So before you spew out yearbook answers, try and do a little research so you don't come off as being an uninformed nimrod. There's hope, but I'm not holding my breath! LOLOL

The Truth needs to get a grip   January 5th, 2009 4:47 pm ET

It was the economics of the repubs that got us to recession after 8 years of asleep at the wheel administration

you sleep when you drive, you drive off the road

what a relief the nightmare of the last 8 years is coming to a close, I wish the new administration the best

geecee827   January 5th, 2009 4:43 pm ET

Wow, and people thought Barack Obama was a strange name. Hey, he won, so maybe Zack Wamp has a chance.

Blake   January 5th, 2009 4:34 pm ET

Hey "Truth"... I have a degree in economics. I don't approve of the Dems unabashed support of the unions. But if you've been awake for the last eight years (further than that really), you might have noticed that the GOP hasn't really been doing a great job.

Go, Zach Wamp!!

Willy Brown   January 5th, 2009 4:00 pm ET

Outstanding!

Union Baby   January 5th, 2009 3:53 pm ET

Zach Wamp or Bill Frist? No difference, except for the face and name. If it walks like a duck, quacks like a duck – it must be an elephant!
Good news? It will likely tear a whole in Ron Ramsey's dreams (the self appointed Lt. Gov of Tennessee).
Tennessee has never, ever produced a decent republican (and in reality no state ever has), for those not from my state please google Tennessee's most hated governor in history – and his name is not Ray Blanton, it's a republican who held the seat during reconstruction.
You see, republicans never, ever change anything except the amount of money they are able to make off the backs of hard working American's.

david thomas   January 5th, 2009 3:51 pm ET

He sure cannot do any worse than ole Phil. Our educational system has taken a beating under his tenure.

Hopefully the Tennessee Democratic party can get a great candidate to run against the republicans. Otherwise, we will have a republican controled government... You see where it has gotten the Federal government... NO WHERE but backwards!!!

I have a question – what's worse: Corruption or Racism?

Or are they pretty much the same? Or does it even matter?

Either way – Tennessee is think with BOTH.

obama-mama   January 5th, 2009 2:44 pm ET

Zach Wamp, sounds swampy

The Truth   January 5th, 2009 2:44 pm ET

Well, some good news, a republican is getting the chance to do some good. but, no we should get a democrat in there to regulate business, support unions to the point where it forces business into other states, and to raise taxes so much that more people and businesses go bankrupt. i am glad at this one victory of real "Hope". Get a real grip on economics, liberals.

Pam   January 5th, 2009 2:40 pm ET

Does anyone in the south have a normal name?

Darth Vadik, CA   January 5th, 2009 2:19 pm ET

Another Republican crook and bigot.
Yes, all of you Republicans are bigots, have you seen the hate and fear they showed for Obama. Oh my God, you'd think because a man is not white and is not named John Smith, he is, boooo, dangerous.

That is bigotry by any definition.

At the same time, Bush, a man responsible for maybe a million deaths (in this world), including over 4000 american service men and women, FOR HIS EGO AND DADDY PROBLEMS, is a "good christian man."

If that is a definition of a "good christian", I'd rather be a bad buddhist.

demwit   January 5th, 2009 2:18 pm ET

CNN is evidently having a hard time keeping up with all the liberal hate now being directed at Obama. Better keep on top of that.., would want to think I could actually get unfiltered truth here.

MikeH   January 5th, 2009 2:14 pm ET

Oh Man, you gotta have a lot of heart to campaign with that name.

If he's honest, and not a religious wacko of facist, I hope he wins.

Blake   January 5th, 2009 2:11 pm ET

OMG! We're barely into '09 and this guy's announcing his campaign– for a GUBERNATORIAL race a year and a half away! It seems like we're in a non-stop campaign cycle which knows no end... kind of like bureaucracy.
:(

Terry   January 5th, 2009 2:10 pm ET

Republicans have been particularly adept at persuading Southerners to vote against their own self-interest. I'm sure that this gubernatorial candidate will support the free market, traditional marriage, the war against terrorism, school vouchers, and the right to choose your own physician. He will be opposed to flag burning, gay rights, unions, socialized medicine, and short skirts.

He will not mention declining wages, crappy working conditions, and no benefits. He will not call his voters morons – at least to their faces. He will not mention that Tennesseeans have voted for guys like him for a long time and that they have nothing to show for it.

Maybe Sarah Palin will come give a speech for him.

Venia   January 5th, 2009 2:05 pm ET

After this disasterous presidency and the prior six years of rethuglican rule all republicans should be barred from running for any office until we can restore this country. They have ruined it.

Franky   January 5th, 2009 2:01 pm ET

"While so much is good in Tennessee, I know in my heart we can continue to do better. Hmmmm, not bad said, not bad...

And don't forget about the Titans and Vols to name a few, Tennesse is the spot...

"It's not impossible. I used to bullseye womp rats in my T-16 back home, they're not much bigger than two meters."

proud army and navy mom   January 5th, 2009 2:00 pm ET

Wamp is the same person who when he first was elected to Congress promised that he would only run one term. He hastily went by on his word with hardly any explanation. These simple minded people re-elected him because he's a "good ole boy".

The TN repugs are a nasty lot, they do not apologize or make excuses for their bigotry, and the people here, repugs and some democrats swallow every word of it because they are too ignorant or too corrupt to do want change.

Polar Bears Against Palen   January 5th, 2009 1:56 pm ET

Spencer/Virginia   January 5th, 2009 1:56 pm ET
