Laura Bush reaches deal to write memoir

The famously private First Lady will publish a candid memoir about her time spent living in the White House.

The famously private First Lady will publish a candid memoir about her time spent living in the White House.

(CNN) – First Lady Laura Bush has secured a book deal with Scribner to publish her memoir, which promises to include “intimate” details about her eight years living in the White House.

Mrs. Bush, the famously private First Lady, consistently remained popular among Americans even as her husband’s approval rating dropped lower and lower. Scribner did not announce how much it is paying Mrs. Bush for her book.

Scribner, a division of Simon and Schuster, won a bidding war among top publishers for the rights to publish her memoir. Scribner editor-in-chief Nan Graham, will edit the book, which is scheduled to be published in 2010.

“As a rare witness to the private moments of one of our country’s most consequential presidencies, and as a First Lady who has maintained a notable level of discretion, her memoir will provide a candid and personal perspective, and an enduring record, of the years that have already determined the course of the 21st century,” Susan Moldow, executive vice president and publisher of Scribner, said in a press release.

Maldow negotiated the contract with Washington lawyer Robert Barnett, a premier representative of famous authors like Bill and Hillary Clinton, Barack Obama and Lynne Cheney.

“I am very pleased to be associated with Scribner, the distinguished publishing house of so many of my favorite books,” Mrs. Bush said in a statement released by Scribner. “I look forward to working with Scribner and the Simon and Schuster team as I tell the stories of the extraordinary events and people I’ve met in my life, particularly during my years in the White House.”

President Bush has said that he wants to write a book as well, but White House Spokeswoman Dana Perino said he hasn’t started meeting with publishers or making headway. When asked at a press briefing on Monday if book publishers told the President to hold off because of his low approval ratings, Perino said she didn’t know.

“I think the President will write a book that I’ll certainly want to read,” Perino said. “If his approval ratings are factoring into somebody’s decision on whether they want to buy the book, I guess they just don’t want to learn about his point of view.”

TCM- You just couldn't resist tipping your hand with the "nappy" comment could you? Is Laura Bush more qualified than Obama because he was editor of the Harvard Law Review and she is Stepford wife to the "Solid C" Yale Legacy graduate – turned-worst president in history? Ohhhh yeah... its because you're a bigot. I hope she donates all of the money to the families of soldiers killed in her husband's oil war. But that's about as likely as Cheney donating all the proceeds from his Haliburton stock to the EPA.

Wait until people start picking on Mrs. Obama. The ones bad mouthing Mrs. Bush will start squealing like a stuck hog. They will be called every name under the sun. The bush bashers can give it out, but can't take it. Just wait.

To "TCM"-Unfortunately your comment stinks of profound racism so has lost all credibility.
As much as I deplored the inability of George W. to lead our country, I like Laura Bush-She has always exhibited such graciousness under the extreme circumstances!

I think we all should reserve our opinion of George W for the time being. History will judge him. Has anybody taken a poll of all the Wall Street crooks to see how many were Republican vs Democrat? We are a bunch of media manipulated fools. DR

I have believed/thought for several years that Laura has been the only thing holding Her husband , George Bush, together. How do you summerize circumstances that constitute such a costly and non-discript Failure? Such a personal and yet "public" tragedy" ? Somehow, We all have to "go on";but, how? Do you answer that question,Laura?

I believe this is to help fund the George W. Bush library, since no one will be purchasing his memoire. Well, except for the 27% of the people who thinks he did a "hell of a job" as President. Of course, those people have not only drunk the kool-aid, but spiked it with Texas whiskey so everything comes out roses.

Laura, I love your tireless attitude of support for your husband, but please spare us. Let him be the first President to not have a library, we can at least remember him for something note-worthy, since he can't even spell or speak grammarically correct; a library will not be fitting. Nor will you selling a memoire to defend him.

I am so sick and tired of the constant bashing of this President. America, you only have another 2 weeks and CNN...what will you do? You won't have George W. Bush to kick around anymore. The direction of the country will all now FINALLY be on the Democrats. If they can't get it right I wonder if America will hold Obama and the DO NOTHING Pelosi and Reid accountable!

It is obvious to me that Reed and Pelosi did not want to work with Bush over these past few years and that some of the accountability for the terrible state the country is in should be on their shoulders as well. This was all part of their plan. Too bad Bush and his advisors did not call them out on it.

Maybe she can explain why Bush read "The Pet Goat" while hundreds died in our cities or what he did for 4 days while Americans begged for help in a major U.S. city while Bush did nothing.

Some of these comments are pathetic. As if a book by Michelle Obama would serve any better purpose than firewood. 1.20.09 is not the end of an error, you kool-aid drinkers, it's the beginning.

With all due respect, save yourself the time and effort, Mrs. Bush. We've lived your husband's presidency - an unjustified and ineptly executed war, negligence over Katrina, economic collapse, disrespect for the law, the Constitution and civil liberties - and don't need to relive the painful memories in a book.

I am not going to pay to read about Beasley and India's trails. Bush's life is no mystery. He wakes up at 5 am, makes decisions based on his gut feelings and goes to sleep at 9 pm. Laura fits in somewhere, somehow.
