Laura Bush reaches deal to write memoir

The famously private First Lady will publish a candid memoir about her time spent living in the White House.
The famously private First Lady will publish a candid memoir about her time spent living in the White House.

(CNN) – First Lady Laura Bush has secured a book deal with Scribner to publish her memoir, which promises to include “intimate” details about her eight years living in the White House.

Mrs. Bush, the famously private First Lady, consistently remained popular among Americans even as her husband’s approval rating dropped lower and lower. Scribner did not announce how much it is paying Mrs. Bush for her book.

Scribner, a division of Simon and Schuster, won a bidding war among top publishers for the rights to publish her memoir. Scribner editor-in-chief Nan Graham, will edit the book, which is scheduled to be published in 2010.

“As a rare witness to the private moments of one of our country’s most consequential presidencies, and as a First Lady who has maintained a notable level of discretion, her memoir will provide a candid and personal perspective, and an enduring record, of the years that have already determined the course of the 21st century,” Susan Moldow, executive vice president and publisher of Scribner, said in a press release.

Maldow negotiated the contract with Washington lawyer Robert Barnett, a premier representative of famous authors like Bill and Hillary Clinton, Barack Obama and Lynne Cheney.

“I am very pleased to be associated with Scribner, the distinguished publishing house of so many of my favorite books,” Mrs. Bush said in a statement released by Scribner. “I look forward to working with Scribner and the Simon and Schuster team as I tell the stories of the extraordinary events and people I’ve met in my life, particularly during my years in the White House.”

President Bush has said that he wants to write a book as well, but White House Spokeswoman Dana Perino said he hasn’t started meeting with publishers or making headway. When asked at a press briefing on Monday if book publishers told the President to hold off because of his low approval ratings, Perino said she didn’t know.

“I think the President will write a book that I’ll certainly want to read,” Perino said. “If his approval ratings are factoring into somebody’s decision on whether they want to buy the book, I guess they just don’t want to learn about his point of view.”

Thank you President Bush for freeing the Iraqi people, helping alleviate the suffering of those with HIV and AIDS, keeping this country free of more terrorist attacks since 9/11, selecting excellent justices and personally writing to every family who lost a loved one in the war against terror. God bless you and Laura for your steadfast service and brave patriotism in this age of wimpy politicians and constituents.

How out of touch is this women? Her husbands decision to go to war with Iraq has left hundreds of thousands dead, and her husband allowed torture to happen on his watch and now there are kids dying in the middle east while he sits around as a lame duck. No one cares about your intimate details you sociopath!

Like the Bushes *need* the money. How vain! How about NO book deal because we don't need to feed our Republican ego.

Some of the people's remarks on this Laura Bush commentary show how mean, hateful, and ignorant they are.

And Georgie wants to write a book too? Will it be 24 pages long and end with "...and they all lived happily ever after..."? Maybe Dickie can draw the pictures.

Keep in mind, Laura haters, that she was not elected to this position. If she were to speak her mind and publicly oppose her husband's choices, the same lot of you would whine that she has no business being involved with government issues. I hate her husband as much as the next person, but come on, people– you sound like a group of children crying about how you hate Susie just because her brother John pushed you down on the playground. Laura Bush hasn't done anything at all wrong, besides marry an idiot, but that's not really our place to judge, now is it? Grow up.

    Laura Bush can write?

That should be a headline, especially after marrying George W. Bush.

Somehow I get the feeling that Laura Bush would not know an intimate detail if it bite her on her prodigious bum...

the hatred and vitriol that seems to pour out of so many with easy, particularly with the safety of anonymity is tragic. whether democrat, republican, or independent, it seems the majority of americans, or at the very least the majority of those commenting on here, can't have a constructive, mature dialogue or opinion, and God forbid disagree, without spewing acidic talking points aimed at "one-upping" the previous insult.

the hate from the left and the right tears at the fabric of our political and social culture; and most seem completely content to continue to scream at one another about how wrong "the other guy" or his wife is, whether it's bush or obama, or anyone else in political leadership. we can't stop to listen to each other, but for all screaming at one another like a load of fools, while the rest of the world shakes its head and laughs.

Please do not let this "first lady" profit on the malfeasance of her husband the so called President. Her popularity is not based on her attributes but rather on the worse of two evils, evil being the key word. When compared to her inept husband, she is the better of the two. That is not to say she is profound or legendary but tolerable.
If she is to profit from her eight years of supporting hypocrisy, ineptness and yes criminal intent, then we are all culpable in their activities. Please don't let 4000 lost in Iraq be in vein and ultimately profit for the “Bush team.” Of course there are those who say Laura Bush “stood” by her man. Is that what we say about the women who stood by Adolf Hitler, Benedict Arnold or John Wilkes Boot? Should they be compensated for their memoirs? I don’t think so and I hope if Laura Bush publishes a memoir, it will be the best seller in any 99 cent store throughout this country.

Maybe she'll really tell the truth. Then again, probably not. We'll never know how she managed to run a stop sign and kill a fellow student driving another car without even getting a ticket, while a black person doing the same in Midland-Odessa would have gotten manslaughter charges, at least, for doing the same thing. This woman has been in denial since long before she ever met W.
