Laura Bush reaches deal to write memoir

The famously private First Lady will publish a candid memoir about her time spent living in the White House.

The famously private First Lady will publish a candid memoir about her time spent living in the White House.

(CNN) – First Lady Laura Bush has secured a book deal with Scribner to publish her memoir, which promises to include “intimate” details about her eight years living in the White House.

Mrs. Bush, the famously private First Lady, consistently remained popular among Americans even as her husband’s approval rating dropped lower and lower. Scribner did not announce how much it is paying Mrs. Bush for her book.

Scribner, a division of Simon and Schuster, won a bidding war among top publishers for the rights to publish her memoir. Scribner editor-in-chief Nan Graham, will edit the book, which is scheduled to be published in 2010.

“As a rare witness to the private moments of one of our country’s most consequential presidencies, and as a First Lady who has maintained a notable level of discretion, her memoir will provide a candid and personal perspective, and an enduring record, of the years that have already determined the course of the 21st century,” Susan Moldow, executive vice president and publisher of Scribner, said in a press release.

Maldow negotiated the contract with Washington lawyer Robert Barnett, a premier representative of famous authors like Bill and Hillary Clinton, Barack Obama and Lynne Cheney.

“I am very pleased to be associated with Scribner, the distinguished publishing house of so many of my favorite books,” Mrs. Bush said in a statement released by Scribner. “I look forward to working with Scribner and the Simon and Schuster team as I tell the stories of the extraordinary events and people I’ve met in my life, particularly during my years in the White House.”

President Bush has said that he wants to write a book as well, but White House Spokeswoman Dana Perino said he hasn’t started meeting with publishers or making headway. When asked at a press briefing on Monday if book publishers told the President to hold off because of his low approval ratings, Perino said she didn’t know.

“I think the President will write a book that I’ll certainly want to read,” Perino said. “If his approval ratings are factoring into somebody’s decision on whether they want to buy the book, I guess they just don’t want to learn about his point of view.”

This woman is a saint. Look at what she's had to endure these last years so please give her a break. The flaws in her mate and his leadership are her burdens first hand.

    Hey Portlander –

If you're going to bash a guy for misspelling something – maybe you ought to check for typos first you moron!

The last time I checked "grammarically" & "memoire" were not accurate spellings...

Nice example of the shining brilliance of the democratic donkeys!

According to Laura's law suit Bush Sr. told her George W. was just a little slow. Turns out according to her he's a complete Idiot. Bush Sr. should have disclosed all the facts.

First Lady Laura Bush is just that, a First Lady. She has shown such respect for everyone she meets, her demenor is Elegance Personified. SHe will leave a lasting influence and impresion in the Anals of the history of the White House. She is up there with Eleanor Roosevelt, Nancy Regan, Mamie Eisenhower who made her Ike her career. I respect all the first ladies because not either's job is or has been easy. Thank God for all the support thye have given us through gheir husbands, our presidents.

What a beautiful and elegant First Lady. Thank you for always being proud of being an American. Thank you for all the good things you have done without demanding people know it was you that did it. We will miss you and President Bush. Please keep us in your prayers as you well know we will need it.

George W. Bush's Presidency was definitely one of the most influential ones in recent memory. The terrorist attacks os September 11 and the subsequent War on Terror, the War in Iraq, and Hurricane Katrina all occurred during Bush's Presidency. I think it would be interesting to hear Laura Bush's account of these events and their toll on President Bush. It will be interesting to see (if anything like that is revealed) what types of psychological pressure were put on Bush as his Presidency continued. I look forward to reading this.

Oh, and I say this every time. I am stunned by the utter lack of respect from 80% of these comments. It is shocking to see the current President and First Lady bashed so much. It's disrespectful and annoying. He is the President of the United States of America. That title commands (and deserves) respect.

Andrew – Most people here are not trashing Laura Bush, just disgusted that she is going to try to lend some credence to her husband's failed presidency. The fact is that most people will not only not buy her book but will be offended at being reminded of the Bush years when they see it in their local bookshops.

Hopefully, this will include the total incompetence of your husband while in office. How can you stand beside him? Thousands of our own people have perished worldwide and we are struggling in our own economy. I am sure this will be your dinner table talk in your wealthy retirement! You should be ashamed, the worst president ever
