Laura Bush reaches deal to write memoir

The famously private First Lady will publish a candid memoir about her time spent living in the White House.
The famously private First Lady will publish a candid memoir about her time spent living in the White House.

(CNN) – First Lady Laura Bush has secured a book deal with Scribner to publish her memoir, which promises to include “intimate” details about her eight years living in the White House.

Mrs. Bush, the famously private First Lady, consistently remained popular among Americans even as her husband’s approval rating dropped lower and lower. Scribner did not announce how much it is paying Mrs. Bush for her book.

Scribner, a division of Simon and Schuster, won a bidding war among top publishers for the rights to publish her memoir. Scribner editor-in-chief Nan Graham, will edit the book, which is scheduled to be published in 2010.

“As a rare witness to the private moments of one of our country’s most consequential presidencies, and as a First Lady who has maintained a notable level of discretion, her memoir will provide a candid and personal perspective, and an enduring record, of the years that have already determined the course of the 21st century,” Susan Moldow, executive vice president and publisher of Scribner, said in a press release.

Maldow negotiated the contract with Washington lawyer Robert Barnett, a premier representative of famous authors like Bill and Hillary Clinton, Barack Obama and Lynne Cheney.

“I am very pleased to be associated with Scribner, the distinguished publishing house of so many of my favorite books,” Mrs. Bush said in a statement released by Scribner. “I look forward to working with Scribner and the Simon and Schuster team as I tell the stories of the extraordinary events and people I’ve met in my life, particularly during my years in the White House.”

President Bush has said that he wants to write a book as well, but White House Spokeswoman Dana Perino said he hasn’t started meeting with publishers or making headway. When asked at a press briefing on Monday if book publishers told the President to hold off because of his low approval ratings, Perino said she didn’t know.

“I think the President will write a book that I’ll certainly want to read,” Perino said. “If his approval ratings are factoring into somebody’s decision on whether they want to buy the book, I guess they just don’t want to learn about his point of view.”

Oh, and I'm sure these epic memoirs of a spoiled rich girl marrying into an idiot oil baron family with ties to Nazi Germany are just sure to be truthful in all matters.

Ah, another attempt by the Bush folk to rewrite history, and another example of the Bush Regime seemingly using '1984' as a manual...

    'Whoever controls the past, controls the future;
and whoever controls the present, controls the past.'

"...I guess they just don’t want to learn about his point of view.”

Would that be the POV that brushed off reports from numerous nations that Al Qaeda was determined to use hijacked aircraft as weapons? Or the POV that crippled The Constitution? Or the POV that said "we don't torture" while torturing people? Or the POV that said The Geneva Conventions are optional? Or the POV that said Iraq had WMD? or the POV that took money from the BinLaden corporation to fund their political campaign and oil company start-up? Or the POV that still hasn't caught Bin Laden? Or the POV that let 9/11 happen?

I would like to read the book if she explains what it is like to love a man the rest of the world absolutely hates!

That would be a good read!

The day to day History we have all lived, no news there, other then a chance to tell her side of what went down.

Since when Repugblicans have the authority to talk about stolen elections?

I can only hope that the hate expressed in many of these comments is not what Americans really are today but only reflects the opinions of a few who hide behind their computers and condemn everything and everyone with whom they disagree. The memoirs of Bill Clinton, Hillary Clinton or Laura Bush should be taken as what they are... their personal experiences during a time in office. No one is forced to agree with their opinions or read what they write.

EJ Best> Where have you been the last 8 years? This guy has the lowest populatarity rating ever for a president and there is a reason for that. Yet you still expect people to unquestioningly "respect" the position and pray for him? Good lord.

Get your facts right. Obama does NOT have nappy hair, so is therefore NOT nappyheaded! Leave Laura alone, whether you like it or not, she's writing a book, and SOMEBODY is going to read it! It's time American's came together to straighten out this mess we're in. Don't we have bigger issues to solve?

let me guess she will say how her husband "agonized" over his decisions to invade a country based on what he should ahve known were lies. The she will say how het "hurt" over the peoples loss during Katrina because of his incompentency She will then go on to say that he "prayed" everynight for guidence and that he was hurt when people questioned his integrity since he has always been a man of integrity and tried to do his best for the United States. That he was "pained" when he decided he ahd to violate the Constitution and disregard Congress when he ordered illegal wire taps on American citizens, held US citizens without charges or a trial (until forced by public outcry) tortured innocent Canadian citizens, tortured innocent Afgan citizens, sent POWs to places he knew they would be tortured when he could no longer torture them at American facilities... yes I can see her book now.. telling us how he is a hero for keeping America safe from non-existant attacks and for driving a wedge between christian (?) and muslims so that a FAMILY of American citizens (born and raised in the US) can get kicked off aplane because they are discussing airplane safety(google airtran and muslims for a real treat), or an american citizen can be imprisioned for wearing a T-Shirt (luckily the courts over ruled this and awarded him $240,000.. should have been more) yep i can see her book now praising her husband for destroying America and the rule of law...

    idiots

Seriously Mrs Bush, no disrespect, but please give us a break........

This talk of 'intimate' details is laughable, it's only a ploy to get people to purchase the book. Don't be fooled folks. If you really want to read it, wait till it ends up on line, or in your local library.
