Cheney swears in Biden

Cheney swore in Biden to the Senate Tuesday.
Cheney swore in Biden to the Senate Tuesday.

WASHINGTON (CNN) – The disputes over the Illinois and Minnesota Senate seats are stealing the spotlight, but there was other notable moments on Capitol Hill during today's swearing in of the 111th Congress.

The most interesting picture of the day was Dick Cheney swearing in the man that will soon replace him as vice president, Joe Biden. As sitting vice president, Cheney presides over the Senate - and Biden is not only vice president-elect, but the newly re-elected senior senator from Delaware. He'll give that position up come January 20, when he takes the vice presidential oath of office.

Two other senators who get sworn in today will most likely soon be stepping down as well. Sen. Hillary Clinton of New York has been nominated by President-elect Barack Obama to serve as his secretary of state. And Sen. Ken Salazar of Colorado has been nominated by Obama to serve as secretary of the interior. Both will resign their seats if confirmed to their new positions, as expected, by the Senate.

Too bad Clinton was too busy on the golf course (or Monica) to actually listen to the intelligence reports of having Bin Laden and others cornered. You liberals amaze me in your complete focus on blaming the Republicans for everything, and not be smart enough to understand the whole picture. Ignorance seems to be bliss for some of you.

As soon as he's sworn in, Biden should arrange for Cheney to be kidnapped and sent to the Hague for a war crimes trial, the same way Cheney kidnapped people off the streets of Pakistan and had them flown to Guantanamo!

TCM you fool 911 happens in your president's watch. Frankly speaking Liberals are the one who will protect America because they respect every ones right. DURING THE CLINTON YEARS NOBODY WAS ATTACKING AMERICA BECAUSE NONE IS ANGRY WITH THE COUNTRY. NOW AMERICANS CAN'T EVEN ACKNOWLEDGE THEIR CITIZENSHIP IN OTHER COUNTRY FOR FEAR OF BEING ATTACK.

  8. Proud Republican

Joe Biden youre an idiot..proud american, you must be an idiot and from another country probably because the stuff that comes from you is downright ridiculous more of the time...have fun with barack hussein osama, im sure him and clinton will soon be best buds, and he will be cheating on his wife in no time. Though that is ok by the morals given off by todays democrats...thank god im a republican and dont have the same morals as you!

Let me also say, I will continue to mock obama in every way, at the same time though I have to hope he does well because this is america, this is where I live and I dont want things to be screwed up, but at the same time I have my doubts that an inexperienced leader and an idiot for a VP choice can really do much. I guess only time will tell though.

My question is Why? just Why? VP Cheney does'nt deserve the right to swear in the new VP of the United States of America.

Cheney issuing an oath of office to anyone is an affront to civilization itself. But I guess it's only fitting that the criminal swear in his accomplices in crime. I wouldn't give two cents for the lot of them.

TCM, you are hilarious!!! now that your phoney "leaders" are gone, you non-thinkers are just funny and sad to the 70+% of us.

if you TRULY understood the FACTS of what has gone on in this country, and not just blindly followed your lying "leaders" and entertainment "news" sources, you'd know how much damage they've done.

you non-thinkers are so gullible and uninformed it's truly scary that you have the right to vote--THE SHRUB was president when our great country was ATTACKED by terrorists on 9/11!

  13. GET REAL.

Look, conservatives, your only hope now is to do the same thing that some religious leaders have done: downplay the religions, emphasize the god. They realized that if they could get the morals and the basic ideas through, they could kill the corrupt views that others had ascribed.

Get back to the basics of the conservative POLITICAL stance. Let the other zealousness go and keep focused. You'll lose your party otherwise, because you're not going to gain any new followers with the drivel you spout now. Get updated or bye bye.

PS – I'm an agnostic and I'm liberal, so who cares what I think, right? Just know that if you get back to basics, liberals may even respect you when they disagree with you. I hope CNN respects me by posting this.

Perhaps you missed it. 9/11 happened on Bush and Cheney's watch. I don't know about safe, but I do feel violated – my civil and constitutional rights have been systematically taken away in the name of safety by those two clowns.

...and speaking of clowns, not sure what your reference to gansta rap and bling has to do with this.

Joyce Becker @ 11:19 "The Vice President does not preside over the Senate, his only job is to cast a deciding vote in case of a tie."

Brian @ 11:09 "Your article is incorrect ..."

    =================

Whoops. I wrote my hopeful 10:46 post too soon. Joyce and Brian apparently are still among the ill-informed hateful left. Art. I "The Vice President of the United States shall be President of the Senate"

Besides castly the deciding vote for a tie as the PRESIDENT of the Senate (note that "President" and "preside" have the same root) , the VP, among other things, ALSO swears in the members of each Senate (a la Biden, Clinton, and Salazar) and accepts resignations of Senators (a la Obama). All members are sworn into the same Senate, whether they are newly elected or not.

Actually the VP does preside of the senate. However, most of the time he isn't there, so the president pro-tempore of the senate does the presiding.

    TCM,

You are a complete tool. Do you remember when Bush ran a dispicable smear compaigne against McCain and slammed his wife? They looked like pretty boosem budies at times during the campaigne this year. That's called politics. You have to slam those in your own party until you are the nominee, then you slam the other party's nominee. Great system we've got.

Also, just because no attacks have happened after 9/11 doesn't mean that is a result of Bush and Cheney. If it does you have to use the exact same logic to say that it is Bush's and Cheney's fault that 9/11 wasn't prevented because they were the ones in charge.

But the fact of the matter is we have no idea what would have happened had Gore been in. Maybe we would have been attacked again, or maybe there never would have been an attack on 9/11 in the first place. For all we know we could be living in a Utopian society had Gore been elected. Just because something happens after another event has occured doesn't mean the first event caused the second.
