WASHINGTON (CNN) – The disputes over the Illinois and Minnesota Senate seats are stealing the spotlight, but there was other notable moments on Capitol Hill during today's swearing in of the 111th Congress.
The most interesting picture of the day was Dick Cheney swearing in the man that will soon replace him as vice president, Joe Biden. As sitting vice president, Cheney presides over the Senate - and Biden is not only vice president-elect, but the newly re-elected senior senator from Delaware. He'll give that position up come January 20, when he takes the vice presidential oath of office.
Two other senators who get sworn in today will most likely soon be stepping down as well. Sen. Hillary Clinton of New York has been nominated by President-elect Barack Obama to serve as his secretary of state. And Sen. Ken Salazar of Colorado has been nominated by Obama to serve as secretary of the interior. Both will resign their seats if confirmed to their new positions, as expected, by the Senate.

I am puzzled. There is so much repetition in these blogs all written in varying degrees of illiteracy. Yet I am almost always in "MODERATION" If it's a problem with space why not get rid of some of th redundant postings? There are some people who can actually write without using LOL – some but not many.
I've long believed that when a sitting member of congress decides to run for another position the first thing he or she should do is resign and allow the governor to chose a replacement.
Hey, TCM - Bill Clinton kept us safe for the seven years prior to 9/11 AND our economy was good; maybe you better think of all your fellow countrymen who are out of work. You must think Republicans don't have any "dirty" politicians. Remember Spiro Agnew, Richard Nixon and all his keepers, etc. Why don't you try to help America heal instead of listening to Limbaugh, Hannity and that whole bunch?

The "new ones on the block" need all the support possibly by Staff, political veterans, the Public in general, and Good Providence! "Hail to the new Chief" and the "new-comers" as well..and hopefully things will be much better in 2009.
Cheney is soooo far above and beyond Biden it isn't even funny. Cheney's intelligence is waaaay over Biden's, not even close. Biden is a bafoon and a liar. Biden talks with forked tongue.
We'll just see how security for this nation holds up with these two stoops coming in on Jan. 20th. I cringe at the thought.

@Gerda, the Constitution says that the VP is President of the Senate. Up until the 20th century, it was common for the VP to actually preside over senate meetings. Now that usually only happens for ceremonial purposes, or when there is expected to be a tied vote, and the VP's tie breaking vote may be needed. Any VP as the Contitutional President could decide to once again 'preside' over the Senate if he or she so desired. Palin was needlessly ridiculed by the brain dead left, as is usually the case. Constitutionally, she was correct.
