Cheney swears in Biden

Cheney swore in Biden to the Senate Tuesday.
Cheney swore in Biden to the Senate Tuesday.

WASHINGTON (CNN) – The disputes over the Illinois and Minnesota Senate seats are stealing the spotlight, but there was other notable moments on Capitol Hill during today's swearing in of the 111th Congress.

The most interesting picture of the day was Dick Cheney swearing in the man that will soon replace him as vice president, Joe Biden. As sitting vice president, Cheney presides over the Senate - and Biden is not only vice president-elect, but the newly re-elected senior senator from Delaware. He'll give that position up come January 20, when he takes the vice presidential oath of office.

Two other senators who get sworn in today will most likely soon be stepping down as well. Sen. Hillary Clinton of New York has been nominated by President-elect Barack Obama to serve as his secretary of state. And Sen. Ken Salazar of Colorado has been nominated by Obama to serve as secretary of the interior. Both will resign their seats if confirmed to their new positions, as expected, by the Senate.

TCM: Liberals have an "entitlement" mentality? Are you kidding? Bush goes AWOL for over a year while "serving" in the Texas Air National Guard – and still gets elected President .... he further ignores the Constitution with his "signing statements" ... Cheney ignores the law by not appearing for supeonas ... Haliburton has no qualms over-charging/falsifying charges for their services ... George Tenet says the evidence against Saddam Hussein and WMDs was a "slam-dunk case", is proven wrong – and gets a Medal of Freedom ... The list goes on ad naseum.

To TCM and others, as long as you're making money while claiming to be a patriot, you're OK in their book.

    What a bunch of fools!

So glad to get rid of Cheney (Bush's "Brain") who called all the "shots" during the Bush administration because Dubya was too stupid to make any decisions. (Pardon the pun considering he shot a 74-year-old hunting companion and the victim actually apologized in front of the media for causing Cheney a problem!! Yikes, that's one scary dude when you have to apologize to Cheney for shooting you!!!) He chose himself as V.P. He outed the CIA agent, Valerie Plame, no doubt about it, because her husband wouldn't go along with his story about Niger selling the "yellow cake" uranium to Iraq, as he found no evidence of that! He let his Chief of Staff, "Scooter" take the fall. No doubt, you go against Cheney, you're done for. Cheney, Halliburton's former CEO. Cheney, a corrupt, warmonger. Made millions making war. Cheney is an evil man. He's hateful and full of vengeance. So glad he's gone. Hope we never hear his name again.

Love Joe Biden and he will turn out to be an excellent V.P. choice and a great help to our new President, Barack Obama.

Joe, buddy, I didn't vote for you. But I wish you the best of luck in these next four years.

Now, that said, if you and PEBO come around looking to tax me and others half to death, don't be surprised when we all mysteriously start relocating to the Rocky Mountains. And THEN, you'll be in a hell of a pickle when none of the producers are left to bankroll your soviet-style socialism.

Looks like TCM still thinks we are being kept safe by the Bush morons. Wow! Still haven't figured it out yet hey TMC. I'm sure if the Bush media machine said education and reading does not improve our children's future.... over and over and over again... kinda like they did with the "they will follow us home if we don't murder them over there"... or "we are bringing democracy to them"... TMC would be saying education and reading is not required.

People like TMC are either from the religious sector where they believe the crazy made up stories in the bible... or TMC is just plain STUPID.

I'm thinking a little of both.

You people are not Americans and should be ashamed of yourselves.

btw-Isn't it ironic that the dude's initials are B.O. Something smells fishy...

People would do well to keep their eye on the ball with Putin shutting down gas supplies to Europe and blaming it on the Ukraine government. While the world is distracted and watching the conflict in Gaza, Putin will move his tanks and planes into Ukraine, just like he did in Georgia...watch and see. We cannot afford to lose Ukraine and all the other satellite countries that got their freedom from Russia when it collapsed. The Russian bear is now looking hungrily at them and waiting for opportunities.

  9. Objective thinking

    Joyce Becker:

Article I, Section III of the United States Constitution has a line that says "The Vice President of the United States shall be President of the Senate, but shall have no Vote, unless they be equally divided."

I am pretty sure "be President of" and "preside over" are considered the same thing by just about everyone.

Everyone else: How many "swear AT" jokes do we need?

I don't understand why it's awkward. It's not like Biden beat Cheney in a race. He's "retiring" so to speak. Next news story please!

To clear things up a bit...

United States Constitution, Section 3, Clause 4. Vice President as President of Senate; Voting Power

The Vice President of the United States shall be President of the Senate, but shall have no Vote, unless they be equally divided.

For those brilliant minds who blog on this site and think they understand the constitutional duty of the Vice President in the Senate..., see Article 2 of the US Constitution-the vice president is the President of the Senate. So, when CNN says Vice President Cheney "presides" over the Senate, they are 100% correct.

Governor Palin was arguably correct in her observations of the role of a vice president to the Senate. People-read before you write! The whole deal about a veep only voting in a tie deals with the veep's right to vote!! However, the veep IS, by law, the President of the Senate. Why else would Cheney swear in the new Senators?

And for you brilliant world leaders in training, who are so clouded in hate for the current Adminstration that you use any opportunity to segway into a diatribe of hate against the president-I wonder when you will run for office or serve the public? If it is SOOOOOO easy to lead and make decisions, why don't you do it?

    Michael-

Answer your question-cause Biden ain't sure Obama was born in this country and does not want to give up his day job till he is actually sworn in!

Obama was born in Kenya folks and he is ineligable to be president-not to mention, too inexperienced.

We are for a ride...less than one term in the Senate....and we elect him president cause he is a good public speaker. Well done, Democrats....well done.

TexAnnie, you say he's been hiding out? Well, you should definitely open up your eyes. The man has been all over the country/world the past 8 years. I'm not a big fan of Cheney, in fact, he disgusts me, but your comment was extremely stupid and proves the demise of the American's sense of political awareness.

Why don't all you conservative communist give it a rest and we will show you again how your govern all the people and not just your people, how you uphold the consitutution and not disrespect it, how you restore America's reputation in the world and how you truly make American safe from terrorism rather than banking on luck and incompetant terrorist, which has kept us from harms way. Yes there have been no more attacks, but our security is like a piece of swiss cheese and if the terrorist had half a brain they would have already figured it out.

Thank God that we will have an administration of realists who will think with logic in two weeks!

    @Marilyn, Powell Ohio

"Why don't you try to help America heal instead of listening to Limbaugh, Hannity and that whole bunch?"

Couldn't the same be said about Democrats the last 8 years? The only difference is that Democrats have the main stream media with more choices for their liberal views. I don't think that Democrats tried to help America heal in the last 8 years. If anything, they tried to tear it apart so they could become the leaders. That is why it the pot calling the kettle black when I hear Democrats complaining about Republicans not being "bi-partisan."
