Porn industry seeks federal bailout

Larry Flynt is asking for a bailout.

WASHINGTON (CNN) - Another major American industry is asking for assistance as the global financial crisis continues: Hustler publisher Larry Flynt and Girls Gone Wild CEO Joe Francis said Wednesday they will request that Congress allocate $5 billion for a bailout of the adult entertainment industry.

“The take here is that everyone and their mother want to be bailed out from the banks to the big three,” said Owen Moogan, spokesman for Larry Flynt. “The porn industry has been hurt by the downturn like everyone else and they are going to ask for the $5 billion. Is it the most serious thing in the world? Is it going to make the lives of Americans better if it happens? It is not for them to determine.”

Francis said in a statement that “the US government should actively support the adult industry's survival and growth, just as it feels the need to support any other industry cherished by the American people."

“We should be delivering [the request] by the end of today to our congressmen and [Secretary of the Treasury Henry] Paulson asking for this $5 billion dollar bailout,” he told CNN Wednesday.

Flynt and Francis concede the industry itself is in no financial danger — DVD sales have slipped over the past year, but Web traffic has continued to grow.

But the industry leaders said the issue is a nation in need. "People are too depressed to be sexually active," Flynt said in the statement. "This is very unhealthy as a nation. Americans can do without cars and such but they cannot do without sex."

"With all this economic misery and people losing all that money, sex is the farthest thing from their mind. It's time for congress to rejuvenate the sexual appetite of America. The only way they can do this is by supporting the adult industry and doing it quickly."

So far, there has been no congressional reaction to the request.

I don't know which is funnier.

The fact that Flynt and that "Girls Gone Wild" sleazebag asked for the bailout, knowing full well, they weren't going to get it but making their point about the "bailout" mania.

    Or

The folks on this site who are taking it so seriously as to get their "moral outrage" worked up into a full blown rant.

It's clear that Flynt got just the reaction he was looking for.

    And both are pretty hilarious.

I think this makes for great political satire. Bush, Paulson, and now Obama have treated bailouts and random ideas (marketed at simulus) as a free for all. So, why not Larry Flynt?
Obviously, no bailout for porn but perhaps this will open the eyes of Americans to the pitfalls of trillion dollar spending and deficit programs Obama is proposing.

Most of the puns I can think to but here would be waiting a long time for moderation. Lets just say that during an administration riddled with cover-ups Flint has always been able to give us the naked truth.

That being said the demise of his industry would be the silver lining that is the cloud of the Bush administration.

well, the Fed wants to save jobs right? I don't see anything wrong if thousands of jobs will be saved. I hope the government doesn't discriminate one job from another since both jobs are paying the bills for some American families. You gotta love the US!!!

Never thought I'd ever type these words - Thank you, Larry Flint! There's been precious little to laugh at over the last several months, and this whole concept just made my day. Not a prayer these guys will see a penny, but I love that they had the audacity to ask...

Youguys don't get it. Larry is pointing out the stoopidity of bailing out businesses. By asking for a bailout he is pointong out if the government is in the business of bailouts for companies, then all companies should and industries should be entitled to the same handout, not just the finance, insurance and auto industry that the governemtn is helping to rob us.

Go ask AIG they will give it to you just like the rest of the money they wasted on spas, hunting trips and 9 figure bonuses to the idiots who got the company in trouble in the first place.

This whole bail out is a joke with less oversite than what brought our countrysand the world economy down.
