Porn industry seeks federal bailout

Larry Flynt is asking for a bailout.
Larry Flynt is asking for a bailout.

WASHINGTON (CNN) - Another major American industry is asking for assistance as the global financial crisis continues: Hustler publisher Larry Flynt and Girls Gone Wild CEO Joe Francis said Wednesday they will request that Congress allocate $5 billion for a bailout of the adult entertainment industry.

“The take here is that everyone and their mother want to be bailed out from the banks to the big three,” said Owen Moogan, spokesman for Larry Flynt. “The porn industry has been hurt by the downturn like everyone else and they are going to ask for the $5 billion. Is it the most serious thing in the world? Is it going to make the lives of Americans better if it happens? It is not for them to determine.”

Francis said in a statement that “the US government should actively support the adult industry's survival and growth, just as it feels the need to support any other industry cherished by the American people."

“We should be delivering [the request] by the end of today to our congressmen and [Secretary of the Treasury Henry] Paulson asking for this $5 billion dollar bailout,” he told CNN Wednesday.

Flynt and Francis concede the industry itself is in no financial danger — DVD sales have slipped over the past year, but Web traffic has continued to grow.

But the industry leaders said the issue is a nation in need. "People are too depressed to be sexually active," Flynt said in the statement. "This is very unhealthy as a nation. Americans can do without cars and such but they cannot do without sex."

"With all this economic misery and people losing all that money, sex is the farthest thing from their mind. It's time for congress to rejuvenate the sexual appetite of America. The only way they can do this is by supporting the adult industry and doing it quickly."

So far, there has been no congressional reaction to the request.

Leave it to Harry Flynt to show the bailout for what it really is.

I love how our country is happily allowing corporate bailouts while there are real people in need, not just another CEO who needs an extra ivory back scratcher.

This looks like just a publicity stunt. As much as I like porn, I really don't think these two should be wasting the government's time.

This is by far the funniest I've heard in politics the last 3 months. Priceless. Hey why not, bailing out auto industries make just as much sense as bailing out the porm industry. Anybody else wants to get in line?

Are most of you commentators brain dead? This is a stunt clearly designed to highlight the absurdity of government bailout of ANY private enterprise. Porn is far better positioned than any other form of entertainment because Americans spend more on porn than they do on movies and video-games combined!

The audacity of Larry Flynt! What a joke! The trouble is that our stupid and totally corrupt politicians are all to prone to give them the 5 Billion.

hah, I figured Mr. Flynt would do something like this. I worked in his marketing department before and they are always looking to grab the spotlight and add some raunchiness to get attention...

C'mon folks! Have we entirely lost our sense of humor in this country? $5B???? THAT alone should give you a clue.

    - it's a tongue-in-cheek attempt to make a point -

And for those of you with a hair-trigger and no common sense, the point is:

All of these bailouts have got to stop. We either support a free market or socialism – you can't have it both ways...

    sheeeshhh.

Why not if the government would have just given every American over 21 500.000 dollars we could have fixed this thing at the start.

Judging from the antics of Mr. Flynt's past stunts this is a tounge in cheek request and i know he's getting a kick out of watching all you evangelists getting your panties in a twist.

Instead of a federal bailout, I suggest they take up a collection among televangelists. After all, they seem to be the porn industry's best customers.

Oh my gosh . . . if the government "bails out" the porn industry, truly this is the end of American civilization. It's over.

For those of you taking this seriously – and it's amazing that some of you are – Flynt has always been known to try to point out the absurdities of our govt. This "request" is simply his way of drawing attention to the fact that the "legitimate" bailout is a major scam on the tax-paying public. And I personally cannot think of a better way to exemplify this than from someone in the sex industry. After all, we taxpayers cannot even get the govt. or the banks to account for what they've done with the money. Use any sexual metaphor you'd like to describe what this does to the American taxpayer.

hey why not, makes as much sense as bailing out Finance, Housing and Auto Industry. USA is done, Obama solution of tax breaks and increased spending will be the final nail in the coffin for Amerca. I was hoping for change but obviously Obama is just like GW, another worthless stimulus bill. God help us.
