Porn industry seeks federal bailout

Larry Flynt is asking for a bailout.
Larry Flynt is asking for a bailout.

WASHINGTON (CNN) - Another major American industry is asking for assistance as the global financial crisis continues: Hustler publisher Larry Flynt and Girls Gone Wild CEO Joe Francis said Wednesday they will request that Congress allocate $5 billion for a bailout of the adult entertainment industry.

“The take here is that everyone and their mother want to be bailed out from the banks to the big three,” said Owen Moogan, spokesman for Larry Flynt. “The porn industry has been hurt by the downturn like everyone else and they are going to ask for the $5 billion. Is it the most serious thing in the world? Is it going to make the lives of Americans better if it happens? It is not for them to determine.”

Francis said in a statement that “the US government should actively support the adult industry's survival and growth, just as it feels the need to support any other industry cherished by the American people."

“We should be delivering [the request] by the end of today to our congressmen and [Secretary of the Treasury Henry] Paulson asking for this $5 billion dollar bailout,” he told CNN Wednesday.

Flynt and Francis concede the industry itself is in no financial danger — DVD sales have slipped over the past year, but Web traffic has continued to grow.

But the industry leaders said the issue is a nation in need. "People are too depressed to be sexually active," Flynt said in the statement. "This is very unhealthy as a nation. Americans can do without cars and such but they cannot do without sex."

"With all this economic misery and people losing all that money, sex is the farthest thing from their mind. It's time for congress to rejuvenate the sexual appetite of America. The only way they can do this is by supporting the adult industry and doing it quickly."

So far, there has been no congressional reaction to the request.

In my opinion, the porn business industry should be banned now this days because they are just entertaining people to create sexually abusing ladies and convicted to illegal drugs or any kind. So I hope the government would "NOT" support them for $$$ billion bailout. By the way, I heard them on HBO Pornucopia saying that they are billion dollars industry but how come now they are asking for money from the government? THAT'S SO CALLED STUPIDITY

It's called satire people. Flynt and Co. are just making fun of the whole situation and getting a free and easy media grab for publicity. nothing more, so everyone can stop getting their panties in a bunch.

This is one bailout I support 100%. I KNOW the money would be used to put people to work. Not like handing the banks and others 1 trillion to pay themselves bonuses and buy more banks.

I am cracking up over this. The economic reality right now, regardless of the industry, seems to be change or die. I find it ridiculous that the government is putting more money into the hands of those who have already proven they cannot handle it. I doubt things will change until we see rioting in the streets for shelter and food.

Simmer down, this is a satire by Larry Flynt. Think what you will of what he does for a living, but he's just pointing out that this bailout has gotten out of hand. Someone in the midwest can't take a joke!

And we're not going to burn in hell for porn Maggie from SC, it's just a little entertainment.

Does this guy realize who pays the taxes that go to these bailouts. Talk about telling the American people how little they matter, the money is not the governments, it is the taxpayers money!

If the U.S. government refuses to bail out Flynt and his buddies, then the porn industry will be, shall we say, screwed.

This is hilarious. Funny they timed their request knowing nothing can be done by the Dem dominated Congress on their request until AFTER Obama is sworn in. But better to fund them than something like the little gay prostitution ring that was at one time run from Barney Frank's apartment roflmao

It is a sad, sad day when the porn industry asks for a bailout. I thought they would be doing just fine since thier "products" and porn can be bought and downloaded for your iPhone, iPod, PSP, yada yada, so on and so forth. Come on America, is this really an industry that we need? Or is this Country going back on its founding principles again? The founding fathers are rolling in thier graves...I would protest over such a waste of government funding. YOU DONT SEE BROADWAY GETTING A BAILOUT!!!!! They are closing great shows cause the American public cant even afford to shell out 120 bucks for some quality entertainment. Shut down a few mags and porn sites Larry. Suffer like the rest of America and adapt.

OMG! This is just yet ANOTHER way for them (the porn industry) to get more unsolicited free media attention from the mainstream media and it's working...CNN is reporting...That's all. Trying to choke us with their "Freedom of speech" blah, blah, blah. Larry Flint & Joe Francis are the definition of opportunists. They are businessmen and this is a business venture. this kind of media attention would cost millions. Very smart of them, but still sickening. (Let me go puke, now)

prostition is a crime i still do not know why the porn industry is not yet criminalised. no one needs to be taught how to make love its natural and this request for bail out is sick. very soon americans will be asking for a bailout from the government when they cannot satisfy their wives in bed.

Well, lets see... if the government is going to bail out the porn industry, why don't they just give money to everyone in the US and we can all be bailed out and have a fresh start...
That doesn't sound too bad to me...

I knew that other industries would be following along the bailout plan, but I can honestly say I never dreamed porn would be one of them.

Their names should be RICHARD CRANIUM... for the "industry" they belong to!

Let the fail and put some morals back in our society... This has to be a joke, I can not possible imagine that any sitting representative or congressman would even entertain this request. If it happens, then we as a country have failed because we are now morally bankrupt.
