Daschle's confirmation hearing is underway.
Daschle's confirmation hearing is underway.

WASHINGTON (CNN)– The opening gavel came down on President-elect Barack Obama's cabinet confirmation hearings Thursday morning as Health and Human Services secretary nominee Tom Daschle appeared before the Senate Health, Education, Labor and Pensions Committee.

Daschle, a national co-chair of Obama's presidential campaign, represented South Dakota in the Senate from 1987 to 2005. He served as the Senate Majority Leader from 2001 to 2003.

The Senate Health, Education, Labor and Pensions Committee is chaired by Sen. Ted Kennedy.

In a bipartisan gesture, Daschle was formally introduced to the committee by another South Dakota Democrat — Sen. Tim Johnson — and former Republican Senate leader and 1996 presidential nominee Bob Dole.

What a laugh – bush supporters talking about dem scandals!!! You folks are obviously deaf, dumb, blind or just absolute morons to have missed and dismissed the disasterous bush admin. Grow up and take a reality check.

Susan   January 8th, 2009 2:14 pm ET

Democrats "Emploding". First, learn to spell. How quickly thugs like you forget the past history, starting with Ted Stevens. People like you love to trash everyone else. It must be nice being an armchair quarteback!

yellow dog democrat   January 8th, 2009 1:58 pm ET

looks like educational system is failing – just look at bloggers – no helpful critisism – just lots of negative ramblings – left up to you nothing would or could change —

thank the great spirit that someone like obama was elected – shows that there is still hope – this country still has enough gumption to try something new – just like at its founding!

JDC   January 8th, 2009 1:50 pm ET

Daschle is to be the point man to try to ram through Hillary-Care II. That should finish off what is left of the economy.

No Hillary = No Obama   January 8th, 2009 1:49 pm ET

What does this guy know about Health and Human Services – nothing. He was appointed as a pay back by Obama. Politics as usual. He and his wife have enriched themselves through their political connections. Obama politics – business as usual.

Political Junkie   January 8th, 2009 1:46 pm ET

DE you are a mess. Wishful thinking on your part. As far as Daschal is concerned….always liked the guy but I am not sure how qualified he is for this particular position.

1/20/13   January 8th, 2009 1:33 pm ET

To Ana B

I didnt think I was qualified to be President but after this election, count me in……..I am working on a new catchy slogan that should win it for me. I figure all I have to do is promise hand outs and I am golden.

New Slogan for 2013 "Free" "Money". that will sucker all you in

Sye the Pychic   January 8th, 2009 1:32 pm ET

DaschIe will fix it.I see 21 Right to Work States, which really means Right to be Slave states, crying and knashing their teeth.I love my vision.

JFB   January 8th, 2009 1:29 pm ET

Dole's still alive? God bless 'em.

Karen-Phoenix   January 8th, 2009 1:17 pm ET

Obama is NOT connected to any scanndels! He was born and brought up in Hawaii and was never a part of the old Chicago politics and has distanced himself from it plus hated it. Thats what change is!!!
His speech was great and Daschelle's hearing was very interesting. Love that everything is out in the open. AND I was brought up in Chicago and a republican for 40 years but I voted for and donated to Obama!!!

masgap   January 8th, 2009 1:17 pm ET

Obama is going to be a good president. Period. Only a few more

days before we get rid of Bush and some of the Republicans thank

God! When a man is drowning 20 feet away he make sure he gets

20 feet or more of lifelines. so is the case of our economy. After that

Obama will address the deficit and make it better than what Bush has

left us.

Gordon Shumway   January 8th, 2009 1:12 pm ET

Tom's a shoo-in! He kissed Teddy's ring when he entered the hearing room.

Yawn   January 8th, 2009 1:03 pm ET

Yawn, another "change" in Washington DC?

what change??   January 8th, 2009 1:01 pm ET

Daschle, what a piece of work. He along with Bob Dole should
back to the heartland and disapper.Don't these two clowns remember that they were not re-elected and we survived quite nicly.

Jazz   January 8th, 2009 12:58 pm ET

Democrats Emploding why do you think Obama is involved in any scandels. Remember he had to work hard to keep his own nose clean. People who don't like him always bashing him for no reason at all, but one thing goes to show. People can post any comment whether it is good or bad. Let you mind be at ease and see how this world function under Obama. It can't and want be worse than George Bush.

Mari   January 8th, 2009 12:50 pm ET

The CONservatives continue to plague our blogs with their vile lies, fear, hate and division. This IS exactly what cost them the elections, but they continue to offer no solutions……. no excuses for the BUSH DISASTER.

Its amusing to read the far-right-nuts posts, its all demean & attack. No substance.

BUSH IS A DISASTER BUT THE FAR-RIGHT IS SILENT ON THIS.

Rick   January 8th, 2009 12:33 pm ET

Daschle is such a weasel. I thought we were done with him.

w.l. jones   January 8th, 2009 12:33 pm ET

What a day! we American finally come around together like concret.

Paul from Phoenix   January 8th, 2009 12:30 pm ET

Daschle's wife is a major lobbiest in the Medical Services industry. How can anyone realistically think there won't be a conflict of interest here? Is Tom not going to speak to his wife for the next 4 years? By far the worst of Obama's appointments (with Panetta a close #2).

amt   January 8th, 2009 12:28 pm ET

I like this pick, but what about the talk of him having ties to/or being a lobbyists ? Nothing there ?

AnaB   January 8th, 2009 12:12 pm ET

I tell you what, any one of you doing nothing but complaining, if you know so much, why didn't YOU run for President? And don't give me the same line of bull about all of us bashing Bush for 8 years so it's your turn now. While I don't like Bush, he's been my President and I at least give him that much respect and not trash him all over the place. He at least stepped up to serve our country, how many of you can say that?

Obama Victim   January 8th, 2009 11:52 am ET

long time Washington hack……………………………Change????

N. S. Huntsville, Al   January 8th, 2009 11:51 am ET

To "Democrats Emploding" whatever the reason people voted for Obama, I'm glad they did, as you can see know one likes Republicans we had 8 years of one, and now the democrats have to fix the mess. So shut up and talk with reality. You were living in the USA for 8 years weren't you?

Newport News, VA   January 8th, 2009 11:51 am ET

I hope he can push Obama's healthcare plan thru. Good Luck Tom and congratulations.

WIlly Brown   January 8th, 2009 11:50 am ET

As sorry as dashole is he should get by the sleaze ball democrats and also no dead people voting him into and office. It's only 4 short years till be kick out team bambi

Toorey   January 8th, 2009 11:48 am ET

Oh, I remember him from when he was a Senator. He hates republicans.

Stephen   January 8th, 2009 11:47 am ET

John Galt in Colorado   January 8th, 2009 11:34 am ET

What a joke this guy is.

li   January 8th, 2009 11:34 am ET

Can't wait to have this guy decide if my dialysis is in the best interest of the or not. Wouldn't want a medical expert or anything to consider that or anything!

cobra   January 8th, 2009 11:25 am ET

Daschle is a loser from South Dakota, guess he will help round out the bunch of retreads in obams washington.

Democrats Emploding   January 8th, 2009 11:22 am ET

Do we finally have a Democrat that is not facing a scandal? Daschle should get seated because he has no ties to Chicago like the rest of the Obama administration.

The reason many people voted for Obama was to restore Americas name around the world. Unfortunately the only thing Obama has done since being elected is tarnish our reputation even more with political scandals and connections to dirty politics.

What a disgrace.

Hope   January 8th, 2009 10:57 am ET

This is a very important hearing, Im fed up with the insurance companies fleecing us, we need simple affordable healthcare, Im willing to pay the same premium I pay to Blue Cross to the government as long as I or my family can go to hospital and get treated and no bills are sent to me. Private healt care is like privatising police.
