Smoke rises in Gaza City after an Israeli airstrike Thursday.

WASHINGTON (CNN) — The U.S. House of Representatives will vote Friday on a resolution "recognizing Israel's right to defend itself against attacks from Gaza," Speaker Nancy Pelosi announced Thursday.

Introduced by Pelosi and House Minority Leader John Boehner, the nonbinding vote would come on the 14th day of an air and ground assault on the Palestinian territory. Israel says it is aimed at halting the firing of rockets into Israel by Hamas militants.

The resolution's language condemns Hamas, which Israel and the United States consider a terrorist organization, for the rocket attacks and "for deliberately embedding its fighters, leaders and weapons in private homes, schools, mosques, hospitals and otherwise using Palestinian civilians as human shields."

On 09-11-2001 when the Palestinians heard about the twin towers they celebrated. If all you Jew haters think these people care about innocent lives you are as naive as they come.Israel is doing what it has to do to defend itself and I hope it continues to do so because she not only hated by most Muslims but a good number of infidels.

The Jewish people came from the holy land, fought to defend there claim in the holy land, where destroyed by their enemies, including the Romans and the Muslims, and were scattered from their homeland to the ends of the known world. They were persecuted by the early Christians and later the Nazis in Germany, then decided to return to their place of origin, where they are now persecuted by the Islamic world, short-sighted Americans and others, including Hamas.
The jewish people have suffered more than any people in history, and now for others–with good intentions–who claim the Israelis are just murderering bullys is an outrage to all sensible people in the world who also want to see a peaceful solution for all the people in the middle-east.

Alan, Texas Teacher et al.

You make this conflict seem very straight-forward and simple with your comparisons. However, I beg to differ. There is nothing simple about this conflict which goes back thousands of years. Do you get that?

In danger of continuing the simplification consider that both peoples have ancient bonds to the land. That Israel as you know it today was created by the world community as an afterthought of the terrors of World War II. In the years it has gone back and forth. Most of the people in Gaza alive today have known nothing but war and killings and utter suppression – they have grown up with Israel moving in with illegal settlements. As the Israelis have suffered from hatred for so long. This is not a matter of self defense!

Zak   January 8th, 2009 10:08 pm ET

Guys, you got the wrong Anology. get it right!
this not about Mexico tossing rocket toward Texas.
this about a terrorist state supported by the the west snatching the land from the native people (Palitsinians) kicking them from the land importing jews from all over the world like Russia and Ethipia, because they are entitled to the land given to them By GOD.
then slaughtering them, humiliating them, putting them under siege, so there's no food no water, no electricity, people starving to death beacuse of of an embargo that lasted almost for two years.
that last episode in 2009 version of Israeli Holocaust with the help of american tax payers, killing the defenseless women and children using bomb from the air, ground, and sea.
Wake up America, call your representatives in the congress tell them to oppose thess blatant injustices. if there's God forbid a second 911 happens, we will be again asking : why they hate us, well the answer:
WHAT YOU SOW IS WHAT YOU WILL HARVEST.
becuase we're supporing a TERRORIST STATE KILLING THEM, giving Israel green light to kill, rape, invade, starve to death, humilite shield Israel from criticism in the UN, and giving ISRAEL money and arm to execute their EVIL plan. this as simple as this THAT WHY THEY HATE US.
tell the congress to focus on our problems home. Like Madoff and Issue and the like.

Chris in Va.   January 8th, 2009 10:01 pm ET

Why does our country go out of it's way to support Israel? What have they ever done for us except provide a tax shelter for Jewish Americans who claim duel citizenship? The only thing I see that they have done is put an Arab knife to our throats.

Time to cut the apron strings and tell them "you're on your own".
We have our own house to get in order.

Randolph   January 8th, 2009 9:53 pm ET

While I have a lot of "spiritual" respect for Israel, I also believe that such resolution is unnecessary and provocative. I don't really see its positive impact in American politic. However, I could imagine its negative impact in our war against terrorism, which Obama administration plans to conduct with diplomacy.
It is OK to support Israel in some circumstances, but supporting Israel so openly in this particular situation is careless and not diplomatically correct. Speaker Pelosi should know that Arabs people feel so humiliated and insulted right now. Such resolution could give extremist and terrorist groups good argument for recruiting terrorists in the name of Jihad in order attack us. We don't need it.
It could also show disrespect and disregard to arab lives. I am not sure that it helps Israel either if every one starts showing its support so openly.
The most problem in this resolution is that it doesn't help Obama administration in its foreign policy. Speaker Pelosi should know it. Unless, it is just one of the conspiracies against Obama administration

Ted:Canada   January 8th, 2009 9:53 pm ET

Nancy – you are making a big mistake and will hurt future efforts to reduce terrorist recruiting

The US should condem all killing!

Taking "one side" is only making you and the US a target

The best way to defeat the terrorist is to make it hard for them to recruit. You have to win the heads and the hearts of the people.

Just look at all the past resolutions of this sort – what did accomplish?

Nothing! but more hatred!

DO NOT REPEAT what the Republicans have done

Think about it!

Best wishes!

Time after time, Israel commits war crimes with overt and tacit approval from the US administration.

When are we going to see those responsible in the International Court in the Hague?

Daryl from Seattle   January 8th, 2009 9:48 pm ET

My God, is that what you call what Israel is doing?? Defending itself?? It's like watching a bully beat up on a helpless little kid and use the defense excuse. Give me a break. Israel is the closest thing to Nazi's the world has right about now. Nazis with America weaponry.

Billiam   January 8th, 2009 9:47 pm ET

I'm fighting for the freedom of my family, and you call me a terrorist.
I call Hamas freedom fighters.
If you don't want rockets fired at you, give me back my land and my right to self-determination.

Sue   January 8th, 2009 9:39 pm ET

Sounds like most of you didn't tune in until the part where Israel fought back — and completely missed the part where Hamas attacked Israel with rockets (and continued attacking even after Israel warned it would retaliate if Hamas didn't stop.)

justin   January 8th, 2009 9:35 pm ET

…This is exactly the kind of US Foreign policy, that increases the chances another 9/11 happening in US and poor american civilians pay the price. The helpless and tired people of Palestine with no one to support them and look to them, become suicide bombers, when all doors closed on them, that becomes the only option to retaliate. Ultimately, it is these policies that create the very terrorism thats on everyone's mind to be eradicated. Very Unfortunate.

sandee in Portland   January 8th, 2009 9:30 pm ET

Why is congress voting on this at all. They obviously do not represent the thinking of all americans. Those of us that disagree with this should contact our senators and congressmen and let them know our thoughts.

Israel is no better than the terrorists in Gaza and I, for one, am tired of our government continually supporting Israel.

Wow! What blatant anti-semitism (and ignorance) on this board!

If Tijuana, Mexico was dropping 75 rockets a day on towns in Southern California — who amongst you would protest if the US went in to disarm Tijuana?

Oh, and, by the way, when the United Nations created Israel in 1948, it created TWO states, side by side: one Jewish and one Arab. Even Jerusalem was divided into Arab and Jewish segments. The Arab world was unhappy with half, it wanted everything. So instead of embracing the newly-created Palestinian state, they attacked the newly-created Jewish one — and lost.

They do not want two states living side by side in peace. They want one. Theirs.

Worse, they don't care how many of their own people die in the process. They love the propaganda value they get when Israel accidentally kills Palestinian civilians in self-defense. And you guys are falling for it.

Daniel M   January 8th, 2009 9:09 pm ET

the middle east problem is causing untold suffering to the rest of the world. problems in africa, asia and latin america are muzzled because of this problem… let the whole world ignore all of them hamas, israel etc and if the do not learn to live in peace let them kill each other. its not our fault.

Israel is composed of a bunch of murdering thugs who couldn't do what they're doing without being aided and abetted by the United States. On this subject, I'm deeply ashamed of my country. The Jewish lobby is too strong in this country and our media is on the side of the oppressor. The Palestinians deserve to have a homeland and to be treated like human beings!

Ann   January 8th, 2009 8:57 pm ET

I am baffled by this. How can this be? The news from Gaza is so awful that I fail to see how a democratic House of Representatives can in any way support Israel at this time. The events of the last ten days or so have been so unjust.

Texas Teacher   January 8th, 2009 8:48 pm ET

Meh…. if someone, anyone… terrorist/s was just across the border in Canada or Mexico firing bombs into our country day after day after day, we would bomb them off the face of the earth! And we would do it so fast, they would not know what hit them! And if those countries harbored those terrorists, we would probably be in all out war!

Seriously, Man! Get your head out of these poor victims story! No one wants the common people killed! That is probably what has kept Israel from doing this sooner! But if those people harbor terrorists who are bombing their neighbors, then they have to take heat! It sickens me that these people cannot see that it is terrorists who are destroying them!…. Not the people and countries they are attacking… religious fanatics are criminal, nothing less!

Texas Teacher   January 8th, 2009 8:43 pm ET

If the people of all these middle eastern nations who are harboring these terrorist would realize that their very own terrorists are the reason for their pain and suffering…. NOT the solution! Wake to the fact that you are harboring thieves in your midsts… a hornets nest of deceit!

This is the last straw, i refuse to support anyone who votes for this either party including Obama

California Gold   January 8th, 2009 8:03 pm ET

The Gaza population is being held hostage by a terrible people who stop at nothing to achieve their agenda…

The terrible people in question……HAMAS.

Yeah, Hamas, the Iran supported terrorist organization. This is their fault, not Israel.

A dead Palestinian is great PR. That is why they hide among civilians in hospitals and schools (besides the fact that they are less than men). They don't care about the people of Gaza. They just care about their insane radical Islamic policies. Their STATED AGENDA IS TO DESTROY ISRAEL. Negotiate with that!

Ari   January 8th, 2009 7:50 pm ET

WAR is HELL for everyone involved. Could it be that this latest conflict is a centuries old fight between David's Israelites and Goliath's Philistines? Hmmm!
Could it be that if the Romans had not killed and enslaved the Israelites and, Mohammed not murdered thousands of Hebrews, the Crusades and Spanish Inquisition not murdered Jews because of their refusal to accept Christ. What of the Czarist pogroms and Hitler's final solution for 6 million Jews.
Haven't we Jews suffered enough? Live and let live. Yes, WAR is HELL but we Jews always have to fight for our survival. We are the chosen people…too often we are chosen for destruction.

If Congress had a real backbone they would stay the heck out of it and condemn BOTH sides for the stupidity of this conflict. "non-binding resolution!" What is the point? To inflame the Arab nations that may still be loosely allied with us?

Enough of Israel highjacking our leadership. The will of the people is not reflected in our leadership when 50% of Americans do NOT believe in 100% no questions asked support of Israel. American Congressmen.women are sheep.

J in NJ   January 8th, 2009 7:40 pm ET

I just wrote to my representative demanding the he support this resolution.

Let's get a few things straight. Palestinians=Syrians. "It is common knowledge that Palestine is nothing but southern Syria." — Ahmed Shukairy, United Nations Security Council, 1956. There is not and never has been a "Palestinian State", Palestine is a geographical reference.

Pre 1948 a few jews were sprinkled here and there in the area but they purchased land and began turning desert into fertile land. In 1948 when the UN created the "Jewish State" they also set aside land for the Palestinians. Funny how their arab brethern, Jordan & Egypt, annexed the west bank and gaza and told the palestinians they were not setting up shop in either area.

We can go on for days with who did what, ultimately you come to the same conclusion: both sides, since the creation of the "jewish state", always point to the other's bad behavior to justify thheir own bad behavior. The bottom line is this: until both the palestinians & jews agree that the price they pay to live peacefully side by side is exponentially lower than the price they are paying now neither will live in peace.

Reggie   January 8th, 2009 7:38 pm ET

Israel knows where Hamas has stashed their weapons, so why not send their special forces troops, (they have some of the best in the world), and covertly destroy the munitions and rocket launchers? This would be much better than shelling schools, hospitals, etc., out of principle.

Hamas needs to stop picking fights with the biggest kid on the block and then crying about it when they get their teeth kicked in.

America needs to help END he fight instead of cheering for the bigger kid.

FrankNStein   January 8th, 2009 7:36 pm ET

This citizen will fully support the Palestinians, who are all terrorists, if just ONE of my fellow American's immediately returns his or her illegally-occupied land to the Native Americans from whom it was stolen.

Since we all know that will not happen, Israel should go ALL-OUT. If it's their very existence they fight for, what have they got to lose?

If my father had not killed German civilians while they put us in ovens, I would be a bar of soap.

Any proper action Israel takes to defend itself will be criticized by the ignorant hypocrites.

God speed, Nation of Israel.

fred   January 8th, 2009 7:33 pm ET

All you libs who think peace treaties are easy with Hamas have no clue. Hamas hates Israel, and their goal is ultimately to wipe out Israel. Hamas's idea of a peace treaty is not a cease-fire. It is, "we'll stop shooting rockets at you if you give us the land where we're shooting them." The only way to create a cease-fire is if Hamas "gives up" whatever its goal in this is. And Israel might need to send Hamas some wake-up calls before Hamas realizes that it is weak compared to Israel. All you people who think peace treaties are soo easy, you all need to get your brains screwed on a little tigher.

Sceptic   January 8th, 2009 7:30 pm ET

WHAT? Have they lost it? Why is a resolution needed with the verbiage that they support Israel. Woaaaaaaav. 1) As if that's not blatantly obvious, come on. And 2) what is the purpose? to provoke the people of Gaza and the International community?

SIGH Maybe its not enough to get rid of Bush and Co……

Joyce   January 8th, 2009 7:28 pm ET

Congress should not make any resolution. Israel is just as much to blame for the sad events in Gaza as are the Palestinians. Shame on all of them.

fred   January 8th, 2009 7:26 pm ET

to all of you who are holding up peace signs and saying war is evil. You are right, war is bad. However, Hamas does not recognize Israel, and Israel, since it "does not exist" according to Hamas, should just destroy Hamas, and there would be absolutely nothing wrong with it, because "nothing" destroyed Hamas lol. In all seriousness, Israel has every right in the world to defend itself. And defending is not good enough. It must show how strong it is to make sure Hamas knows it's not just dealing with some tiny group of people. Israel is for real! Go Israel!!!! :)

mark l holland   January 8th, 2009 7:26 pm ET

No one has yet explained why Israel has a right to exist. If someone comes into my home at gun point and chases me out of my house and claims it as their house. Do they have the right to exist in my house for all of eternity.

I would say no.

Tariq   January 8th, 2009 7:26 pm ET

Israel has a right to defend itself…no one disputes that. But when you are killing over 500 innocent civilians, they cross the line into recklessness and waging an irresponsible war. If the 5 Israeli lives lost justify the war, surely the 500 innocent lives lost as collateral damage demand you re-consider that justification.

Victoria   January 8th, 2009 7:25 pm ET

This is rediculously sad. Why must we always take Israel's side? Why do we condemn Hamas when the people there VOTED for Hamas democratically? Aren't we the democracy pushers? We can't complain when we don't like the outcome of an election. Does anyone know about the blockade that went on weeks and spurred Hamas to launch rockets (that didn't kill anyone)? Then Israel defends itself by slaughtering Gazan civilians? This makes me sick!!

Pat Omaha, NE   January 8th, 2009 7:23 pm ET

3) I fail to understand why we are spending billions of $$$ of our Tax payers money to Israel – what are we getting back? and this billions of $$ we dont have and need to borrow.
4) I fail to understand why we Americans need to create Arab enemies (called "terrorists"), by supporting Israel's disproportional use of force

Did anyone ever think that if we, the United States, just left Israel alone and stopped supporting them, that maybe we wouldn't have so many problems with the Middle East? A resolution stating Israel has a right to defend itself is the dumbest thing I ever heard. They are the ones that started the attack!

Reg   January 8th, 2009 7:10 pm ET

Guess what folks let me tell you what the fighting all about! Not to mention how the Europeans poked an eye out when dividing Israel /
Palestine and Africa to the NONSENSE we have today!

For starters:
There's Natural Gas found just outside of Gaza in the Mediterranean
Sea. The folks in Gaza want more revenue from the find , but Israel
doesn't want Hamas to receive the cash. The Brit's & Abbas are
struggling to work with Hamas / Israel on this revenue issue.

Yes, where there's Natural Resources you'll find "Testosterone
and War" everyday! Oh yeah I almost forgot "Who's God is Better"!
Pathetic! Stop Israel & stop Hamas!

Obama needs to start building schools, hospitals, and other hearts
& minds realities. Get the hell out of Afghanistan with bombs, but
stay in a way to get the poppy from being their GDP! Duh!

Jon Stewart of the Daily Show, who is jewish, has also pointed out that while what HAMAS is doing needs to be stopped, Israel's policy of occupation land theft, and embargo should also be stopped.

If the House is to draw up a resolution, it needs to address both wrongs. Otherwise it is just pandering to the Israeli lobby.

linda in AR   January 8th, 2009 6:43 pm ET

Too bad that they are NOT voting on a resolution that demands an immediate cease fire with a mediated peaceful settlement including an end to blockades and Bremer Walls.

Also, it is time for Israel to submit to open IAEA inspections and international non-proliferation agreements.

This is not a demand for support of terrorists, it is a demand for fair play ending the environments that grow terrorists.

Irwin, Thousand Oaks, CA   January 8th, 2009 6:43 pm ET

Another unbalanced resolution that does not serve the cause of peace. Of course Israel has the right to defend itself, but does it (and the U.S.) have the right to blocakade a democratically-elected government and then wreak such devastation on the country. Shame on the U.S. government for being so out-of-touch with the rest of the world and further diminishing its image.

Fredi   January 8th, 2009 6:43 pm ET

I don't think such a one-sided resolution will help.
It is true – as far as I know – that it is usually the "Palestinians" starting the violence (rockets, suicide attacks, etc.) – unfortunately it is also true that Israel's retaliation usually kills an average of 100 Palestinians for every dead Israeli – BOTH MUST BE CONDEMNED by an administration that wants to be taken seriously as a mediator.

Ghandela   January 8th, 2009 6:41 pm ET

What a shame! Don't these lawmakers think the Palestinian people and oppressed people all over the world deserve better than that? I will call my Congressman and ask that he vote against the resolution, as Israel keeps violating international law under the watch of our government. This is one of several reasons that explain the growth of anti-americanism around the world.

Ben   January 8th, 2009 6:41 pm ET

Well said guys, I really apperciate your comments 100% true. Lots of people supported the jews for the hollocaust, we tought we had a lesson from the past, but unfortunetly no lesson was learned. it's about time to punsihed them severly.

Sandra Crosnoe   January 8th, 2009 6:40 pm ET

we seriously need to quit meddling – we are broke!

Nimi from NY   January 8th, 2009 6:40 pm ET

Are these people crazy? How can they speak for the rest of the American people? Where is the voice of reason for those who don't support what Israel is doing to the people in Gaza? We elected Obama to help change American perception in the world and this is how we start? No life is worth more than the other. Someone should stand for the people in Gaza too. For Christ's sake the House should not do this.

Rhino   January 8th, 2009 6:33 pm ET

What an awful situation…this area will always be a ticking time bomb as long as these terrorists have no value for human life. Won't these people ever learn (our government included) that war is like divorce – nobody ever wins.

Everett Beights   January 8th, 2009 6:31 pm ET

NO BIAS – NO BULL
Reminds me of Richard Nixon's comment
I'M NOT A CROOK

Naomi   January 8th, 2009 6:31 pm ET

Why do we need a resolution? We already support Israel…what's this about?

boered1   January 8th, 2009 6:22 pm ET

Hmmm shouldn't we take a poll to see if this is the way most Americans thiink? I know I DO NOT support this.

Sarcasm aside I think this is wrong and sends the wrong signal if we are to try to work out a fair and equitable agreement between the two sides. the facts are there is enough blame on both sides in this matter and until we acknowledge that we can never aid them in moving forward.

ed howe   January 8th, 2009 6:22 pm ET

support israel for killing 700 palestinians? total hypocrisy.

Matt   January 8th, 2009 6:21 pm ET

They better not. Israel's excessive reactions have resulted in ridiculous and unnecessary loss of life. In the space of 2 weeks, they've killed 500+ palestinians…1/10 of the number of Americans that have died in Iraq in 7 YEARS…yet we yell and scream only about the lost American lives? Time for some equanimity here. Israelis steal Palestinian land that lies outside their border and we turn a blind eye. They blow up a school and we pasa a resolution supporting them? Israel doesn't let Palestinians who live in Israel vote, yet we claim we're proud we moved past that kind of discrimination with respect to our own society. I can't wait until Jan 20. I support the guy 100% but Obama's first true test is whether he will be tough with Israel or just let them continuie to get away with their consistent policy of escalation and eradication.

Woody   January 8th, 2009 6:18 pm ET

why would congress support the palestinians? they dont have hundreds of billions of dollars.
